Families in England left homeless despite 33,000 empty council homes

- Tens of thousands of council houses are currently empty despite the country facing a national housing crisis.
There are 33,993 vacant council properties in England, the highest number since 2009. And Sky News can reveal more than 6,000 publicly-owned homes have been empty for over a year.
Sky's Becky Johnson speaks to Kwajo Tweneboa.

The 2 bed council house next door to me in London/Lambeth has been boarded up since the tenant died in June 2021.
Offer them to people on the waiting list and if they repair them and clean them up to a good standard they can keep them
That would open the door to massive scams - so no. Maybe reduced rent if they do them up. Any why are so many council houses given to foreigners ffs??? If they can’t support themselves they shouldn’t be here. They cost us more than they could ever contribute.
Repair responsibilities are always the landlords/councils. People on the waiting lists are usually poor and cannot afford to repair at their expense

@@jimbo220 in an ideal world yes. but most of them on the waiting list has various personal isses that prevent them from engaging like a normal community. That's my experience

This makes me feel so furious, we keep being told, no homes are available and then they show this... The system is broken, the people in power do not care!

Stop talking nonsense. People in the buildings that used to be used as hotels but are now used as housing for asylum seekers have nothing to do with this article. One is financed by big government and the over is financed by local councils.
The Housing situation in the UK is the most messed up it's been since WW2. Bring Back Proper Council Housing (Selling it off was a stupid idea that made many wealthy at the time, but has now affected the next generations).
The council are aware of tenants suing them for sub standard homes. And they have no funds for improvements.
Homelessness is created on purpose
Homelessness is a crisis . Homelessness doesn't discriminate. Everyone is affected by homelessness. There is alot of vulnerable people living on the streets this is damaging for people's mental health. The government will build more homes but they will be unaffordable. It is a national epidemic and the government are not doing enough. Shocking
Those who decided to finance these cartels organized by these Landlords should be held accountable, They have a sure goal to enrich themselves from the poverty of the Workers😢😢😢😢
That is very sad. It should be sold or given to 1st time buyers who could refurbish them. That would reduce competion between renters at least.

@@ianhill4585 They might look that way from the outside but all is not as it seems. Several of my friends who live in some of these 'structurally fit' council houses/flats are trapped in a kind of dystopian nightmare life. Because no govts have focussed on upgrading or repairing council houses, many have horrendous cases of damp, black mold and disrepair. The tenant is not allowed to touch or fix (and most don't have money to do so) but the housing association/govt/council landlord don't do their duty and neglect repair and just ignore the tenant's pleas for help. I've seen where my friends have developed respiratory illness and skin conditions due to the horrific living conditions of these places. Nobody wants to address the problem. Meanwhile the tenants (most vunerable) are suffering or even expire as a result of all this neglect. That is what I have seen and experienced through the eyes of friends.
Simple. Disrepair and no longer suitable for inhabitation.
But if they don't redevelop the building they can't raise the rents above threshold of housing allowance. Which means they can't move people out of London. Councils aim is most likely to move people out of London. Sad thing is it probably will happen to future generations outside of London
Solving the immigration crisis (incl those already here) will solve the housing crisis.
If the rich land owners and council wanted to use their funds more wisely and didn't just keep it all for themselves. Maybe open up these homes by doing them up then we would have much of a crisis.

The economic ravages of an incompetent corrupt government is the problem.

These house are more than likely not fit for purpose.
They might have structural issues.
And if they are not up to standard the same people moaning about them being empty, would then moan about the houses not being up to standard.
What needs to happen is these house should be knocked down and new house built on the land.
Should we ask the authorities if they truly think sleeping under a bridge is more up to standard then sleeping in these?

What London needs is a proper shanty town district . I recommend the entire Southbank area. Not too far for the tent people along the Strand to relocate themselves.

Now then, ----now throughout UK many literally homes of various descriptions empty! Instead of building new affordable homes on green belts and indeed grey ones use these properties for suchlike. Yes I know financial issues re councils up and down the UK but we know only too well who has benefitted from funds and became richer. We know who drained councils only too well last 14 years at least.
As for affordable homes how can homeless people no job and bereft of even able to get job as no paperwork required ID etc plus issues blocking them even contemplating a home. Just consider this people right now doing a full time job yet having to live in a tent literally. Homelessness increasing throughout UK and beggars. Towns and cities depredation and boarded up town centres are now rife. Many thousands using food banks from those on hardship benefits, universal credit and in work beside claiming, yet still food banks using out of need. Professionals too using food banks not claiming benefits. Even yes even middle class too using food banks.
