Walt is the racist with the heart of gold (in his old age). My favorite part of this scene is when he is racist to the white kid and calls him Ole Fay. Walt hates everybody.
He called the kid an "ofay paddy-ass", which was a combination of VERY old racial slurs. "Ofay" was a term used by slaves and freed blacks to describe white people, usually gays, that liked to engage in interracial relationships. It was mostly used in the Deep South and started showing up in language outside the South in the late 1800's, post Civil War. Historically a "paddy" was a derogatory term for an Irishman, usually used by the English but became popular across Europe and North America during the Napoleonic Wars.

There is a lot of truth to that movie scene, if you were a white boy/man walking through a black neighborhood just to take a short cut to get to where you were going, either home, school or work, a lot of the older people or non gang affiliated people in the neighborhood would be ok seeing you walk through the neighborhood, it’s the younger gang affiliated people that were always the problem, they would ask you why you are there, telling you that you are lost and then proceed to try to jump you, all because you were just walking through the neighborhood and wanted no problems with anyone. It happened to a lot of friends and some family members of mine, they would warn myself and others as kids to never walk through those certain neighborhoods because you might not walk out alive. You didn’t have to be fully white either, you just have to have light skin and be any other ethnicity other than black for them to fully mess with you. Then again they would also hate to see rival gang members who were also black walking around in their neighborhood or anyone black that they have not seen before. Most gangs in the inner cities kinda operate the same way too, if they don’t know who you are and haven’t seen you in their neighborhood before, they will step up to you and question/threaten you.

It started showing up outside the Deep South after the Civil War. "Paddy" is a general slur for an Irishman, first coined by the English, and spread across Europe during the Napoleonic Wars.
Why pull out a finger, then a gun? Because he was distracting them, making them focus on one thing while doing another. Smart move when facing 3, possibly armed "gangstas".
Someone called Mr. Eastwood an overrated actor. Based on that remark or comment, my guess is that they have had limited exposure to his work. Gran Torino is well written, directed, and performed. A great group of actors, who was so believable. Maybe he was or wasn't racist. Regardless, he didn't appear to put forth any effort to improve the harmony in the neighborhood and community, until the end of the film.
These kids are not real gangsters. If they were, Walt would have been in trouble the moment he got out of his vehicle; gun-or-no-gun. The kids portrayed here are just neighborhood, misguided knuckleheads, hanging out wasting their lives, potential, and opportunities. The average bully in any rough school district carry on in the same manner, but most likely is not a gangster, but is a JERK, and probably heading to jail, or more.

Thank you sir. I agree completely.
They weaponized the word..No worries..White boy still can be said
It's more like virtue signaling too.
@chalmapatterson544 ..The exact opposite, is happening here
He called the boy ,Ofay pattyass. 😅
Ofay paddy-ass. In case you didn't know, "ofay" was a very old slur used by slaves and freed blacks to describe a white person, usually gay, that liked to engage in proclivities with black people. It started showing up outside the Deep South after the Civil War. "Paddy" is a general slur for an Irishman, first coined by the English, and spread across Europe during the Napoleonic Wars.
"What, you trying to be super spade or something?" 🤣 This line and the "ofay pattyass" line cracks me up every time I see the movie
"That's a war Hero"
Mr. Clint Eastwood always got it right.
When you are trying to get back to your deceased wife.
Dont wake up pops when he worksd 3rd shift.
Why pull out a finger, then a gun? Because he was distracting them, making them focus on one thing while doing another. Smart move when facing 3, possibly armed "gangstas".
I want a T-shirt saying "im not a r@cist, i h@te everyone equally"😅😅😅
Walt is my dad. He loved everyone but dont fuk with.
Don’t argue with the 1911..
Its not a race thing - its a punk thing. Color aint got nothing to do with it.
100% ok to be a grouchy old racist. My grandma said so. She said things but she was almost 100 and she meant them as a compliment
This IS the worst neighborhood!
Only the first reactor had the balls to show the scene? The rest can fail for all I care. Lets make sure we take care of the real ones.
Is it racist to call'em like you see'um.
This was a good movie. Where's Yum Yum?
Don’t mess with a guy with a pipe wrench in his pants
These kids are not real gangsters. If they were, Walt would have been in trouble the moment he got out of his vehicle; gun-or-no-gun. The kids portrayed here are just neighborhood, misguided knuckleheads, hanging out wasting their lives, potential, and opportunities. The average bully in any rough school district carry on in the same manner, but most likely is not a gangster, but is a JERK, and probably heading to jail, or more.
2:10 oh no the Snowflake doesn't want escalation....
What are you spooks up to? 😂😂😂
Would y'all just watch the whole movie? Not gonna spoil it but the character arcs are amazing.
It will *always* be cool to be a grumpy old racist.
Except for today, it’s “cool” to be a hyper sensitive offended on behalf of others type. Not you, of course. Just in general.
Sometimes, it is not ok to not
