I already knew most of these tips already yet it is always great to refresh my memory! Tips I have is using luggage that is bright or using a luggage tag that is funky, taking photos of your documents and emailing them to yourself as well as keeping a hard copy with you and with a family member or friend at home, letting family or friends know your itinerary so if you can't contact them or something happens, they have a approx idea of where you are, I email these to my folks and in laws so they both know.

I always pack a couple of empty, ziploc-type bags. They're so handy for so many things aside from protecting important documentation from water damage. You can put your own meals and snacks to go in them to save money. You can double up the bags and fill the inner bag with ice to treat a sunburn or other type of burn (which I did for a travel companion in Spain).

I make a copy of my passport and carry it with me in a separate place from the actual passport that I have on me. I keep a copy also in our suitcase.
I carry my passport etc in a zip bag that hangs around my husbands neck. I double pin it to his undershirt so if they want to cut the cord from around his neck it isn't going any where. As for me I made a mesh bag that I pin to the front of my underwear. We put our money every where. Some even in our socks...my bra..never in my purse that I carry around my neck. I use it mostly for pamphlets for the day..small gifts bought that day. We never wear one stitch of jewelry...no watches..rings..
Be on the look out for two or more working together to distract you..thats when you walk fast and hold on to your purse....never engage with them.

  • @IanDocherty335

Don't let your suitcase leave your body, I've had mine stolen after security while distracted paying for a coffee. Yes, in seconds it had gone , probably by someone else catching a flight. Also, on the plane lock your bag/ suutcase. People have been known to take the opportunity while you go to the toilet.

First-time viewer on your channel, you provide good info. My tip would be regarding avoiding food- and waterborne illness. Never brush your teeth with tap water in developing countries (check online for specific places where you're traveling). I once forgot this rule and brushed my teeth with tap water in Ixtapa, a Mexican resort. I was violently ill for 2 days, missing almost half the vacation. Also, ALWAYS carry a medicine kit that includes loperamide (anti-diarrheal), other OTC meds (like cold pills and what you take for headaches), and your Rx medications. Make sure this stays with you in carryon or personal item.

Also, put your contact information and itinerary inside of your luggage. Email yourself copies of your passport, ID, and front and back of credit cards for cancellation. I had my wallet and passport stolen in a club in Berlin and thanks to my email copies I was able to quickly cancel my credit cards and it helped at the consulate too.

Travelling by boat, I would make sure I have medication for sea sickness (especially if it is your first time). Sea sickness does not go away that fast.

Prepare a travel list before you travel and add to it after each trip.
Hardware stores (e.g. Lowes & Home Depot) have inexpensive tool bags of various sizes and lots of pockets.
Measure your carry on bag(s) before you travel. My bags were okay for the UK and France, but I would have had to check them on Icelandic.

I keep a spreadsheet with my packing list on it. Each trip I copy it and add more sheets for itinerary, a checklist of things to be done prior to departure, outfit ideas and trip specific notes. Good tip about the carry on measurements. Airlines are checking weights and dimensions a lot more these days and the info is easy to obtain on the airline website.

In January 2001 was in Luxor when the revolution happened. England was the only country that did not send a plane to take out their nationals so had to stay till June. All the banks closed, mobile phones went down, internet went off, no planes, trains, buses, control on fuel for cars. Lucky for me I had lots of cash, and a UK mobile phone which continued to work. Everyone in a uniform disappeared off the streets. Everyone even total strangers took extra care to escort me to ensure nothing happened to me. I had all the temples to myself, went to Cairo and had the whole Giza plateau to myself as everyone was in Tahrir Square. I had time alone in the Great Pyramid in the box. Amazingly wonderful experience.

My family was coming back from a cruise in Alaska. We had a black bag with all our dirty laundry in it, and even had a ribbon. Once we got off the boat, we grabbed our bags (they gathered them the night before), and had to go through customs since the port was in Vancouver. My dad grabbed a black bag, thinking it was ours. We get through customs just fine and we are in line to get a taxi to the airport. My mother wants to put something in the black suitcase and goes to open it, only to discover...that wasn't our bag. He had to go through customs AGAIN to get our bag. Thankfully our bag was still there! And then he had to go back to the Canadian side. My mom was pissed and we did not let him live this down. That year for Christmas, we got him a luggage tag that said, "Not Your Black Bag"!

Thanks for this video! I'm lucky to travel twice this month so I'll make sure to follow your tips.
For me the worst thing that happened was when I forgot my bag in a restaurant in London the day before returning home. I noticed that I didn't have it in the morning. My ID was in it, the restaurant wasn't opened until 6pm and my flight was at 1pm... We were extremely lucky because I was with my uncle who's a flight attendant and the crew waited for us (obviously we were late) and I managed to go through security with only my student card. They let me through because I was returning home and because I'm a citizen of Europe.
When we arrived home I immediately called the restaurant. The staff did find my bag and thanks to a friend who lives there, I got my bag back in two weeks.
It was very stressful at the time but I was extremely lucky that it did work out in the end. Since then, I always double check if I have all my stuff with me ^^

Once we where traveling to Verona Italy in 2013, and we where 3 families traveling together, one group was in front and other in the middle and i was last, while we where walking one local guy was walking beside me and every time the group ahead of me slows down, he would do so and he kept following the group ahead until i have noticed him trying to get closer to my wife where she has almost everything we have, and then i have demanded the group to stop immediately, and the guy kept walking as if nothing happened and later stopped at a store looking at us from the reflecting of the store screen glass, and i have pointed to him and wanted to go for him since we where 3 big guys, but we stopped and kept staring at him, later he came back to the middle of the intersection meets his other buddies and left on their way, bags thieves in Italy are lots over there and i was always reminding the group of this, not until our last trip to Istanbul Turkey 2017 when my sister in law had her bag stolen 2nd day of our 14 days trip.
last but not least, always take precaution of the person ahead pumping in to you ... etc, us Canadian we take things for granted and peaceful, we think same lifestyle as in Canada everyone in honest, people will take advantage of you trust me, i have been living in the middle east for over 17 years and i know how they think.

my daughter and i were in paris when i developed an apparent ear infection the day before we were to get on the plane and travel back to the usa. i could not imagine flying with this- my ears are already sensitive on planes. so we took the subway system to a hospital emergency room. as a man checked us in, each communicating in the other's broken language, i explained that i was american and would like to know the cost of the service- i knew that france had national healthcare, but i wasn't a french citizen, so i was concerned that i would not have enough on hand to pay. we verbally danced for awhile as he tried to understand what i was saying. finally he lit up and said "oh!". turned out he understood my ~words~, just not the concept that i was trying to pay money for healthcare, regardless where i came from! quite the experience!

Some of the budget airlines here in the UK are now getting very strict about carry-on luggage. Ryan Air were recently panned for charging for carry-ons, and there was a news story just this week about another one, Easy Jet, I think, who are now enforcing a 'zero-tolerance' rule on carry-on size. People were arriving at the airport having used there bag before only to find they didn't fit the sizer. They were fined £53, which is, what, about 35, 40 USD? Also, if you fit a lock on your hold baggage be sure it's the kind that is easy-open for border security, or they'll cut it off. They do in the US, anyway. Happy travels, everyone! 😀

I needed medical treatment in Cuba for an infected Mosquito bite. Admittedly we'd finished touring by then and were spending the last 4 days in a hotel, so it was the hotel medical centre, but honestly, the treatment I got was awesome. I got tablets, an injection, ointment, and a follow-up consultation. Even with insurance we had to pay a little, but we didn't mind that, and the doctor ( holistic, I think?) and nurse couldn't have been nicer. Maybe because we're used to the NHS here in the UK ( which stands for No Hope of Seeing a doctor!!) but I was impressed. 🙂

Also don't negate the possibility of hitting up a natural therapist when you get sick in a foreign country - I got really sick in Canada - found a naturopath at a health food shop my hotel recommended and discovered OREGANO OIL (that was an unknown remedy back then and seemed like a miracle to me). Also in some European countries pharmacists are legally allowed to prescribe certain medications so if you have a migraine or a cold you might only have to go to a chemist and save yourself a trip to the doctor who will just send you to the chemist anyway

While waiting for the bus in Lisbon on my way to the museum, I noticed one guy trying to look down my shoulder bag. As I was crossing the street to get to the correct bus stop, his cohort walked toward me and started yelling something I didn't understand and pointing at my Nokia phone at the time. I just yelled back that I don't know what he was talking about and go call the police if he has any problems. I did this so other people waiting at the bus stop know that I'm not from there. When the bus arrived, I had two women trying to push me from behind and when I looked back thinking that maybe a lot of people were trying to get on, but there weren't. That made me more suspicious of them. Once I got on the bus, I stayed next to the driver and these two women just moved to the middle part of the bus. On the next stop, they alighted. Since I travel alone, I tend to observe people and what this group didn't realize was I saw some of them across the first bus stop I was waiting at from the start. Having traveled extensively around Italy exposed me to thieves who tend to work in groups. I learned earlier on to only carry enough cash for the day and never put them in one place.

When I was in Sicily Palermo they came in my room and took my passport without telling me and took it to the front desk. They be in the owners of the hotel.
I had a hell of a time reporting it lost with the Sicilian police who barely speak any English and once I found out that the hotel had my passport I had to go back to the police and try to get it through their heads I found my passport the hotel took it from my room.

Fantastic hints and tips, you two! A comment about insurance: check the exclusions on the policy. My son's friend fell off a scooter in one of the asian countries, and needed hospital care. There was an exclusion on his policy specifically regarding scooter accidents! I would love it if you did an article for those who are afraid of travelling. You are so experienced now, any hints on how to cope with fear of flying??

Another great video and great tips and suggestions. Only tip I would add is to be sure you have plenty of water and healthy snacks after you clear TSA. Once when traveling from east coast to New Mexico just prior to Christmas holidays a huge storm moved in very rapidly and caused sudden extreme flight delays and departures. We waited nearly 12 hours before finally getting out and supplies at the airport were severely depleted, even bottled water. So even if you don't think you will need food and water, be prepared. Also, I hear you on food borne illness or severe GI issues like Noro virus. Once had Noro virus on 14 day cruise and self treated as licensed health professional but should have sought ship clinic for at least a few hours of IV fluids. The muscle cramps due to severe dehydration were the worst I've ever experienced and continued for far too many days into my trip.

The only "disaster" I have ever had was getting bumped from my flight. That was a PITA. Otherwise, minor inconveniences. Looking back now, it was funny how on a train, some fool's bag fell from a rack and triggered the emergency stop. Delayed for an hour. Another tip for packing is if you're travelling with someone to "buddy pack", that is, put one of your outfits in their bag, and they put one of their outfits in your bag. The chances of two bags getting lost is slim. That way you will have *some* clothes to change into when you get to your destination. I also agree with the poster who said "Never get a black suitcase." 100% true. So much easier to pick out if it's an obscure or bright colour.

Thanks guys, interesting as always. Just something to consider - there are actually a LOT of countries in the world where I would avoid going to hospital at all costs (I'd literally have to think I was dying - I mean I avoid going to hospital in MY country but that's cos I'm a nurse and that's a nursing thing) but you would not BELIEVE the cases we receive back from other countries cos the person got sick, went to hospital and then the hospital screwed up - now I'm not saying that those ppl didn't need to go to hospital for their condition but if you're going to travel and bcos of your health condition/s you're at higher risk of becoming very unwell while o/s I'd recommend doing your research before committing to a country, don't just think that travel insurance will take care of you - those companies do their best but they're limited to the medical care avaliable in the country you're in (and it might not be countries you think - we're getting an increasing amount from some European countries etc); and don't think 'well if I'm that bad they'll airlift me somewhere better' but you have to be medically stable enough for them to risk that so you may be stuck there awhile and the longer you stay at an inept hospital the more likely it is something (ELSE) will go wrong

Second wallet - I have US money emergency just in case with one ATM card for travel. Located in my personal bag for easy access. 3rd wallet is my true wallet I kept all the different currency of money and Canadian dollars plus all of my ATM gold card and most of my ID's like health card. I was going on a mission trip to Mongolia with a group of friends and we had a layover in Beijing and so when we actually arrived in Mongolia (a very quaint, quiet and small capital airport), while most of the other passengers had left from one of the only few flights going in and out of the country, we were still standing around at the conveyor belt for my friend's luggage. It felt odd that all of us had gotten our luggage except his. So we waited a while longer while the mission leader went to consult an airport personnel and after half an hour later, it was found that his luggage did not make it...that it was still stuck in beijing. So sadly, we all left the aiport without his in tow. Fortunately, since they were able to find it in Bei jing airport, it made its way to its owner after a week (I'm not sure why it took so long). During that span of a week, being a guy he didnt mind changing or showering much. But he survived. So yeah, sad but true. Sucks that it was freezing cold at that point of time.

I have the expectation to get sick, so on top of taking preventative measures, I also travel with medications that are covered with my insurance here in Canada. I tell my doctor about my travels and fill the prescriptions before I leave for things like travellers diarrhea, and bacterial infections that way I have the medication in case I do get sick because sometimes a hospital is not that accessible in certain places.

Yep, missing a flight due to your own foolishness is a terrible and expensive mistake you only make once. As for travel in disaster zones, I highly recommend watching Guildbrook Farm's "Earthquake" video. (it is listed in their top 10 watched videos.) These folks are a bit into prepping and she had to put that mind and skillset to use when she was caught in the Nepal earthquake a few years ago. It is quite the story and gives some incredibly valuable lessons on what to do in a situation like that.

I will also add that the oh so critical anti-bacterial wipe is a god-send for travel. One goes right away as soon as you step on the plane. I wipe EVERYTHING down in my seat.. Make going through security easier than it has to be. In your personal bag put all of your jewelry, I wear a jacket so my phone (which is usually my boarding pass), wallet, and anything that might be in my pockets might be can all be put in different pockets of my jacket.
Also, remember to be patient with flight attendants, if your stuck on the ground, they're not getting paid.

Here's the thing, YOU don't lose YOUR luggage, what happens is that it gets stolen in transit, it gets misappropriated by customs and never sees the light of day again or ends up looted for cameras and cash then sold at lost luggage auction for $10 because someone wants your new case even though the lock is busted open, or it gets badly handled and smashed/crushed and destroyed and ends up in a dumpster after falling off of a luggage trailer..

Always notify debit card and credit card company to inform them the trip so the cards won’t be blocked from suspected theft. Also, make sure you have card number and international phone number handy in case your cards are lost or stolen. They can overnight a new card to your location and block the old card from being abused.
