  • Today I'm accepting a build challenge from a subscriber to make a bad-butt shield out of a satellite dish. I'm not too anal about the rules of these build challenges, I use materials I have around (not just what I get for the challenge) but I doubt anyone has too huge of a problem with that. Hope you guys like it!

+ZednoughtAlpha I would also like to see the defence of the shield. and also would layering them up a couple thick be viable for a better defence without to much weight?

I'm sure you get this a lot, but you should build your own version of an assassins blade. (Not necessarily the hidden blade from assassins creed)
    Challenge part:
The blade must be easily concealable, while being easily accessible.
Must be strong enough to hold up in a fight if need be.
Anything else is completely up to you.
I hope you accept and enjoy this official build challenge.

Watching this video reminds me of being 14, watching these videos, dicking around in my grandpa's shop with all his tools, and thinking about building the ultimate zombie apocalypse kit. I used to listen to all the songs you used for your videos, and I'd share so many of your videos with my friends that "gonna pop a few rivets" became an inside joke between us. I forgot just how obsessively I used to watch your videos, how much they used to inspire me to be creative.
I recently started rewatching your videos, old and new, and I'm starting to regain that creativity, picturing projects in my mind while I'm going along my day, getting excited and geeking out about going back to my garage.
I've always loved your videos since I first discovered you back in like 2011? Thanks for being one of my all time favorite creators!

Zombie Apocalypse Day 0 Part 1
In the Mayhem of the panic the crowds of people swarm the guns shop around town. Zombies emerge from the horizon running at high speeds. As they attack the crowds they are unable to defend themselves. ooking from a binocular lens one o Eli's friends, Churro(cuz why not?), panics his last means of hope to get a gun was finished as he had been through every gunshop and store in town.
"Fuck i cant survive this" says churro.
he starts thinking of where else to get guns and weapons
"Oh yeah Eli makes weapons for YT, dang why didnt i think of this before?"
Churro grabs his Butcher knife and makes way for Eli's domain
Along the way he meets more friends of Eli
"Did all of you have the same idea?"
"Yep" the group soon get close to the domain, but have come to a problem. Their running has caused a horde to give chase to them. Churro and the group now face themselves with a problem. Will they survive? Find out next time....

    Hello Eli,
May i ask something, You said that is better to cut off the big bolts and nuts, but you didn't explained why, so: why is it better not to use them as spikes? Is it only for a balance purpose or is it something about them getting entangled in the opponent's clothes?
Anyway, keep up the good work!

The only problem with a spiked shield is that instead of deflecting a blow it will catch it and push your shield away from you, leaving you defenseless.

Yeah the range on a polearm speak attack adds a lot of contant tension to an engagement if you dont have a ranged weapon. The shield bash may also be useful for pushing back and attacker into effective range of the spear if they charge the distance. Also consider though that spears can be grabbed so adding back barbing or something to your spear tip could be useful on an extended strike, the attack strength may be less important than the retraction strength in your use of the spear. imo.

You could apply Roman' legionary scutum type of handle, because it's round a bit and you can use it on more ways, so instead of vertican use horisontal grip its more usefull tehnique of fighting, so if you find bigger and round satelite dish make something like Greek's hoplon and film your shield wall with your friends, in zombie apocalypse i think that could be usefull because it offers big protection, choke point, good bracing etc. Well this is my opinion what i would like to see, and 1 more advice have short sword or knife while carryng this cuz if someone rush on you with shield, well your spear is useless :)

great build !!I have a suggestion for you though..you should have put something like a rope or strap/belt on the edge of your shield for your forearm to slide into. That way you'd make an ancient Greek type shield(hoplon) that would give you better controlling ability and sturdiness while you're using it.just research it if you like the idea!;p

Spikes on shields were actually used mostly for catching swords, of course they bashed too but that would make an opening for somone to counter attack.

Hey I noticed when you were filing down the excess material on the drill hole's (I think you refered to it as flanges?) it seemed to take you quite a while and there still seemed to be some left on the finished product. Now rather than filing these down what you want to be doing is grabbing a sharp drill bit slightly larger than the hole and twisting it around the edge by hand. This will completely remove all the burrs and leave the hole clean.

Hey Zednought. Just wanted to let you know my opinion on this build. You really need to put something more on the other side of the shield, something to hold your arm in and spike sides definitely needs more spikes. I kind of feel like you got lazy on this one, but that's okay! Make a shield with the bigger dish that could be just as equally a weapon as a shield!

Should get some modified acorn nuts, and send them to you. They are quite devilishly sharp, and can *really* deal some puncture wounds.
Really, just make a spike, and added threads.

I unfortunately dont have the money to buy and send materials but I think that building a weapon completely from school/ office supplies would be cool. I would think that a mini crossbow with rulers for limbs would be super bad ass.

tip : you could use a big drill bit to remove the flages on the other side of the sheet

i would have also filled the 1/2 gap on the front with fiber glass andd skinned it with canvas. and when you have the 4 3/8 inch bolts attached nylon straps to the inside to further stabelize the dish to my forearm for a shield bash that did not risk my wrist getting twisted or snapped as easy in a large blow.

You should invest in, or use a chamfer bit for stuff like at 6:40. Beats the fuck out of hand filing, and it also expands what sort of fasteners you can use, pan head, Alan head etc.

Just a quick idea for deburring, use a big drill bit or a dedicated deburring bit, so you don't have to fool around with a file.

The things you call flanges that occur after you drill a hole is refereed to as burr. Burr can be removed with a de-burring tool. No idea the price but might b worth looking into. For the jobs i do it works freaking wonders

    • @rorydonaldson2794
      @rorydonaldson2794 9 років тому

You could also consider using sandpaper to roughen the surface of the dish, then you can apply spray paint and it will stick to the metal much better

    • @halsoy

+rory Donaldson or something as simple as a slightly larger drill bit

    • @rorydonaldson2794
      @rorydonaldson2794 9 років тому

thats true, many times I've used a big drill bit, sometimes it doesn't take the burr off it bends the burr it back making it impossible to remove without a massive drill bit like a 15mm / half inch drill bit. That's where the deburring tool is handy
