- Defiant Loyalism: The Literature of ‘Anglican’ Survivalism - Gary Kuchar
In the wake of the English Civil War in the early 1640s, Parliament disestablished the Anglican Church as it had existed since 1558. Faced with its apparent extinction, those loyal to the pre-war Church began an extensive writing campaign, renewing their own tradition at the very moment of its apparent demise. In doing so, they turned their Church's darkest hour into one of its most spiritually vital and literarily engaging moments that it has yet enjoyed.
Gary Kuchar is Professor in the UVic Department of English and author of several academic monographs, including George Herbert and the Mystery of the Word: Poetry and Scripture in Seventeenth-Century England (2017) .
