  • Musician/UA-camr Stevie T recently put out a video called "How To Be Country", listing all the things you have to do to be a country music star. But is he right? This former Country Music Guitar Tech breaks down the video to see how accurate it is.
    [ERROR/FACT CORRECTION]
At 3:34 in the video when talking about Country artists using stage names or variations of their names, I listed Tim McGraw's real name as being "Samuel Timothy Smith". While that is the legal name that he was born with, he did legally change it to "McGraw" later in life after meeting his biological father, MLB pitcher "Tug" McGraw.

@@joshuawiedenbeck6944 it is because unlike rock and metal country fans still listen to radio. Radio and the country music corporation. I am sure there are lots of talented people out there. But from what I have heard in these last 35 year's all sounds the same except with a southern accent. Gone are the days of Crystal Gale, Alabama, Marshall Tucker, Glenn Campbell, Barbara Mandrell, Charlie Parker and Dolly Parton.

I lived in Nashville and became friends with lots of session musicians, and as a metal head you are 100% spot on their are shredders. The system reminds of the motown system, and other pop music machines in the past. As much as I want to critique the country music industry, its one of the few music industries left where a person can make enough to feed their family and keep a job for decades. Sad, but I understand why so many people move to Nashville and work in country because it pays the bills compared to a lot of other genres.

The "Hello I'm Stevie T. Some of you may know me..." right at beginning killed me. I'm not the biggest Stevie T fan, but the man's spot on. My ex LOVED country, and I had to hear it atll the time. That country song he wrote sounds like everything I ever heard. He hit EVERY key aspect of a country song, and not just lyrically. The style of the lead, the vocal harmony in that one line of the chorus, the rhythmical flow in the vocals. And lyrically, he did that thing where country HAS to reference itself, nonstop. I mean the list goes on.
As far as your point about country artists shredding, that same ex dragged me to a country fest to see Brad Paisley (and others), and boy can Brad friggin play the guitar. I was very impressed, he put some of my favorite metal guitarists to shame with that performance. And I don't even like country!

It's so true that country music songwriting is such a formula that doesn't get changed much these days but, I personally am such a sucker for it and I love Hardy. (mostly because he mixes metal and rock with his music). He cranks out hits of his own band and writes hits for huge country artists, very impressive.

This just shows everything I don't like about Country music and the scene, makes me so glad I am in the UK, we value artists for what they can do, this means writing, playing, recording and performing live. The metal scene is so diverse and while I do not like all of it there are bands in most sub-genres that I like which shows how different they sound, its not all the same or noise, Long live Rock and Roll, and Metal

Absolutely!!! Live is a different beast. I’m 2014, I went to Austin to see Jason Aldean open fro George Strait. In Jason’s set was My Kinda Party, that song, even on the album, has a kinda guitar solo trade off and they played that even better and longer live. Im a guitarist myself so even though I do t know any band members’ names, I go to see them just as much as the titular name. George Strait was phenomenal and his Ace in the Hole band is the reason why he’s able to be so amazing. I wish I could relive that night over and over again.

I haven't toured in country, I have worked for a home grown regional sound company and did some short stints with the same act in the upper Ohio Valley tristate area. I also was one of the audio engineers (monitors mostly ) for a live broadcast country music show similar to the opry in Wheeling WV Called Jamboree USA originally the Wheeling Jamboree and that is the name again now but Clear Channel bought the radio station and the theatre the show was being broadcast from in the late 80's and they pulled the plug on a traditional live radio broad cast every Saturday night since like the 30's and put the put the theatre up for sale after they ran it into the ground with no code updates after 35 years. this was all in harmony with the beginnings of Live Nation in 90's when Clear channel split the stock and sent Live Nation out as it's own entity with all the same shareholders. I mixed in the theatre for over 30 years and started there in 77 and was quickly the lighting director before I switched over to audio. I'm also a guitarist and musician and this guy is pretty spot on. But you are correct and he wrong. the new country does let the band members rock out and a lot of these players are discontented rock musicians who get on the big stage with a rock genre of their choice. I still work in that venue as a union stage hand and I'm surprised I have never seen you in there. I know a lot of the older country techs on the circuit. I do obviously see a lot of new faces today. He is a funny MF to say the least. You are correct, country invented the artist and not the band. Band members in country have nearly all been been hired guns. No even cuts going on there. You missed beer, God or Jesus , mud, red dirt, Mom and Grandpa. EDIT: I looked for the video and a lot of people have it posted. He should have had it copywritten. Not to late Stevie

Great video, thank you, sir! He came close on the name-drop requirement with "favorite sing-along" line, but probably too inside baseball for outright hit. There's a ton of Taylor Swift mentions - does that count? :) For a complete jester, Stevie is a damn good musician (or the other way around) and these parodies can be so spot on, they could be on the radio, especially the Ed Sheeran one he did... You should do a by-the-numbers country song, on a dare.... and then a country metal one, with some death growls :)

Amazing, isn't it? Stevie T knocked that one right out of the park. Now think back to previous times...how about Ian Tyson's album "Cowboyography"? A masterpiece. Any one of Willie Nelson's greatest albums. Hank Williams. Johnny Cash. So many others from the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, and some 90's. Those were country songs. What we have now is corporate "New Country" (a stetson and a twang and a bunch of cliched lyrics on top of some soft rock) which sounds like it all came out of the same boardroom.......and Stevie T nailed it. That song of his could earn a fortune on radio if some present "country" star played it. Stevie T is a brilliant composer. Next, you should see his video on how to write "a Billie Eilish song". Hilarious and spot on.
