We do not have rats that live in the ground, they move in and live in barns and animal stalls. @@mickeydrago9401 Yes. I never heard about possibly Great Dane before, that's interesting. I had three boxers at one point and your comment about squeaky toys reminded me of one. The way she was so focused on the squeaker inside. She would shake the toy the way the yellow lurcher in this video did then chew away till it stopped. Sometimes a minute or two and once worked on a toy for hours, ( which I thought would last), laying on her back after awhile and holding it between her two front paws and carefully, persistently fanging the mechanism until it stopped. Wish I had videos of some of the amazing things they did but it was a few decades ago. She would circle on her bedding before sleeping, spinning live a dog chasing its tail. One time she spun about a hundred revolutions, dipping her nose into her bed upon each turn, then flopped down to sleep... That would have gone viral for sure. She had been horribly abused before we got her with the court system being involved to take her away from the very rich owner. And took a long time for us to help her regain trust, but the other boxers and my teen age kids helped a lot.

Doodle Smurf it’s natural for all breeds, some are just better at it than others because they’re faster or more agile. My brother has a Maltipoo that worries his toys just like these dogs do with rats, if he ever catches a rodent it won’t be around long.
How do you train a ratting dog? Need one. I only have experience training GSD’s... I have an assumption on my head, but involves buying mice from the pet store.
@Sand Man some breeds of dogs are natural in ratting, no need for training. But you could train them how to obey commands and to kill professionally. Every bite should deliver a killing blow, to avoid being bitten and then moved on to the next target. You could also train them to be focus and vigilant. but as for killing rats, its natural for them, no need for you to teach them. They will kill rats whether you train them or not. What you need to train them is how to become an efficient killer. That's how it is.
LMFAO!!! This is exactly how my 3 Ratties play with their toys, squeaky or not . It is very instinctive to them!!! They each have a large woven Nutts for Knots ball that they will shake for hours. The neighborhood squirrels literally drive them crazy while they tease them running the overhead cable and phone lines.

My Maine Coon cat has killed at least 7 rats in two years outside our home. They don't stand a chance. Safer and cleaner than traps too.
Omg!!!
Why is it so satisfying?!
:)
Because these rats are filthy disease ridden animals that eats food crops. Pet rats are entirely different. Plus everyone loves to see a happy dog.
antony kolony These dogs are happy to be doing the exact job they were bred for, and a pest is being taken care of before it can become a problem.
Because our ancestors have been doing this for thousands of years. They domesticated cats and dogs to ward off rodents that destroy crops

Do the dogs usually spend so much time just trying to steal a rat from another dog?
They don't try to steal it, but that is a common misconception. They offer aid in the kill. It's part of the sport for them.
