When this channel first popped up on my feed, i almost felt bad for the little rats. Then i watched the video with over like 500 rats or something in a little shed and was cheering for the dogs.
100%. There will always be a surplus of rats. Even after what seems like an apocalyptic genocide, you're barely putting a dent in them.

@@JosephCartertheMinkMan Sorry, didn't mean that to sound like I was discrediting you. I 100% believe that you eradicate them at a local level, I was thinking big picture. The world would need thousands of teams like yours to put a meaningful dent in what I consider to be, the global rat problem.

Boss may very well be the best ratting dog on this planet. He has perfected the art of chasing, catching, and dispatching rats in a surgical and precise manner. His face shows the battle scars to prove his path to grandmaster. Truly a beautiful specimen he has become.
Yup, he knows amd can predict where they will run. He probably calculated and considered every possible escape route.
Yeah. He is very efficient. Kill, let go, then kill another one. Never waste to much time with already dead rats.

He’s the perfect overwatch dog. He’s like the sniper of the squad, picking off most of the few rats that escape the smaller dogs and minks.

Also, all poisoned animals have a chance of poisoning something else up the food chain , dogs, owls, and other animals can become seriously ill.
I am such a fan of natural pest control, because there will always be pests as long as there are humans. We have an ethical responsibility to do the least amount of harm, in the most sustainable way possible.
There were pests long before humans came along.
Fleas, mites and other little monsters have raised problems with mammals sinc before the ice age

Dogs can tell the difference between pet rabbits and wild hares while they’re fighting each other.
A rat and a mink would have very different smells.
That explains that ratty fur coat you wear all the time.
My dog distinguishes nothing - cat, rat, rabbit, marmot, she goes after them all. Lol

Every video has at least one moment where you can tell Joseph’s dogs are top tier in their training. 7:41 Boss was smart enough to give away his kill -he could’ve easily lunged for it to grab it himself- but he wouldn’t hurt the smaller dog.
Impressive by itself, but the fact that he was able to immediately change his focus to another rat, pursue, and get the kill in about 2 full bounds? That’s a one in a million ratting pooch!
It really isn't that hard to train a dog that is bred to hunt small game.. to hunt small game.
They have been selectively bred for this purpose... lol.
Training a Mink to do this is a little more impressive due to the fact that Mink have not been bred by humans for generations and Joseph is essentially doing ground breaking work.
I am not really all about hunting but I am very interested in the entire domestication process. That is why I follow this channel as it is interesting to see and learn about Mink and to see how these essentially wild animals build bonds with humans.

@@NopeSecret Agreed! Obviously, Joseph is doing groundbreaking work with (very successfully) training undomesticated animals. I agree that what he’s doing there is fascinating, but my comment was highlighting something deeper than just hunting small game.
The smaller dogs he brings with are more like that- they have fantastic drive, but are much more single-minded in their focus. Boss’s actions shows that he’s more able to analyze the situation on a higher level- where his personal body count is less important than making sure no rats escape. Keeping the mission above your own personal achievements- that’s an instinct that’s hard to overcome, even in humans. I just find it fascinating that the whole process works as well as it does!

I’ve never seen anything like this. The dogs are amazing! The mink blew my mind the most. The best part is you saved it from the fur farm, and now he/she is living the best life.
This mink is a rookie, I'm not sure if you seen the one he named honey badger in action yet but it's insane.
@josephcartertheminkman I remember you showing these wonderful creatures to Kenan Harkin. This is the most humane thing you can do without poisoning the environment. I respect your faith,search and skills utilizing what we need to balance ecosystems 💜. I'm looking for things,in research about using animals again and natives(in diverse cultures do this on a regular basis)

Even if it's rather violent it's still something to see 3 different species working all together to achieve the same goal.
Well those are trained, but there is a natural case where Badgers and Foxes team up in hunts to catch prey together.
It never fails to give me the giggles just how enthusiastic Gypsy and the other terrier breeds are. Just shoving their faces and heads down into the holes with their tails up in the air; it's too funny. They look like puddling ducks! 😂
When it comes to terriers, training is barely necessary. They crawl out the womb ready to catch rodents lol
You do understand its a little unnerving watching an animal take pleasure in killing.
This is like someone enjoying working at a slaughter house because they love to kill things....
Also says a lot about a person when they enjoy watching animals die.

The rats are pests; they steal food, spread disease, and will hunt and kill the young pheasants on the farm. Some of the really big rats might even go after an adult bird! God only knows how much that farmer loses in fowl and profit annually due to rat predations. They're aggressive opportunists; they'll eat human flesh, too, if we can't get away from them or fight them off, so don't go thinking they're harmless to us.
The dogs are doing what they were bred for hundreds of years to do, work alongside humans and hunt, and taking joy in that. Mostly I was giggling at how funny and cute their wagging tails looked sticking straight up in the air like that. It's really not that much different from being able to look at a chicken or a cow and think _Yeah, ok. You're cute. But your species is also delicious._
All life, in one way or another, feeds on other life; even plants thrive in soils enriched by decayed flora and fauna. Life feeds upon life.
That's just the cycle of lunch, man. And a quick death from a dog's or mink's fangs is far more merciful to the little pests than a slow, agonizing end from poison.
@@NopeSecret Except they don't take pleasure in killing. This is a game for them. If you taught them to catch tennis balls they would still wag their tails the same way. They are happy that they are doing a good job. Its like saying a police dog is taking pleasure in getting you busted with drugs.
@@NopeSecret It is hundreds of years of breeding, to cause an instinct in the animal. Same as retrievers retrieving or herding dogs that are herding. Try to not get a Lab to chase a tennis ball. It is almost impossible. You want a border collie to not herd sheep. Good luck with that too. Get a group of husky dogs attached to a sled in winter and stop them from running. I dare you to try that one! This is the circle of life. If you want to see animal take pleasure in killing, than you want to watch house cats kill, not dogs. Dogs are just doing the work ingrained into the core of their brain.
Boss is an absolute beast when he’s in work mode, he’s so focused and ready. Such a good boy.

I have got to admit the way you've trained you dogs is exceptional they do an amazing job and know to not even have an interest in the pheasant. The hour's and patients of training for that to work is unreal.

Every time I watch these videos all the animals you employ seem to have the time of their lives. They get to be true to what they were made for and that is hunting, and I’m sure they’re very happy animals. I’m sure that despite the looks of handling dirty wild pests, they are remarkably healthy!

This is one of the coolest, most unique farm care techniques I've ever seen. Watching a mink and some SERIOUS pups to tandem work like this was really interesting!!
7:30 Boss has the eyes of a hawk. Dude was in the middle of biting a rat and still noticed another one that was barely in his peripheral, managed to let Gypsy have it while jumping over her, and chase another rat all in the same burst of speed. That has to be Ultra Instinct powers or something lol

This is the only channel that I saw which actually had an ethical and natural pest control. Its just sad to think that rats are so intelligent and can be even taken as pets and yet when their population goes out of control they become pests and must be eradicated immediately. The world is such a beautiful and cruel place 😢
I was really impressed by how the dogs drop the rats so soon after catching them; especially early on when one of them dropped the rats together in a neat little pile!
Routine, practice and perseverance 🔐! Besides, I had a mentor who was cop for years(and they all agree what animals do in training,it's work self improvement and play) yes I said play,a hard working game for animals to strive to be better than their basic instincts. These guys here are a true testament to it 👀🙏🏼💜

@@JohnSmith-bt2pv In 20 years of living where I am, we never had any rats/mice, 2 years ago we had 2 mice move into the basement during the winter, after getting caught in the same trap over and over again (Joe has said multiple times that they learn from their mistakes - clearly didn't), covered in blood, one lost a tail when I grabbed it, managed to slip through the hole they kept chewing open in the pantry after it was sealed 3 times.
That's how the 1% rule the world

It always brings me joy to watch dogs get true fulfillment by being great working dogs, using all of their skills and senses, and contribute to their pack, which in this case includes minks and humans.

All of the dogs do a brilliant job but cos of his size and speed Boss is amazing and I like how he instantly drops them after a couple of crunches, the mink do an amazing job too.
Saw my first mink in the wild recently. They are truly beautiful and amazing animals, so graceful yet savage if given the opportunity. Didn't know they could be used for rat control to this scale, that's freaking awesome. Keep it up! 💪

A little more... graphic... that I would have anticipated, but nonetheless fascinating how dogs and mink work together. I used to catch squirrels with 5gal buckets with about 2-3 inches of water. I felt kind of bad for the squirrels, until I realized how humane drowning was compared to traps and poisons. But then I'm the guy who names his pigs, and shares watermelon and beer with them just before I butcher them. Anyone who's EVER lived on a farm/ranch (I had 2 acres in rural Los Angeles County, outside of Six Flags Magic Mountain) can appreciate how valuable service like yours can be.

I’ve never heard of such a thing but that was the coolest effort I’ve seen in a long time. Such a great team.
“Ratting” was a necessary profession in olden times and is the reason for a lot of small dog breeds’ existence. Joseph takes it to a new level by adding minks to the team because minks fit right down into the rats’ tunnels and their obstacle hideouts where dogs can’t go.
F5 did pretty well, and of course Boss is the boss! The way he was following a rat and then Gypsy caught it and he jumped clear over Gypsy and caught another rat - excellent!

First time seeing your videos. I love ferrets, but a mink! Nice. Funny, I am a vegetarian and 49 YO male and see the importance of animals. Love how all the dogs work together and those minks are very useful for the size to get under the units. Nice buddy.

I think it's better to use this way than using pesticides and other poisons. Sometimes poisons can cause more damage than the rats did. Great job!

I’m wondering how the mink deal with rat bites. Those rats are huge and fighting for their lives and the mink, not all that much larger, is right with them in a tight place.

I can't say for certain but my guess would be through evolution. Minks are very smart and fast. They aim for the necks of their prey and often hunt prey larger than themselves like chickens. My guess would be they have natural resistance to diseases often accompanied to rats and probably have tough skin as well.
Minks are considered predators with bigger teeth, tougher skin/hide and average weight is 3.5lbs, rats are 1.5lb scavengers with good bite force (mainly for chewing through things) but being a scavenger doesn’t get any battle experience not to mention they have very thin skin.
Mink and the rest of the weasel like animals are like mini wolverines. They are tough, fast. They have nasty teeth. There skin not so easy to get through by a rat and it is like loose, so the rats can't really bite anything important. They just get some tough skin, and pretty thick fur. Remember they are raised on fur farms for the coats. Meanwhile the mink are biting through the neck, like housecats and lions and tigers do. Almost instant kills.
Maybe how mongoose win snakes 🐍
They are to big and really can kill chicken and some in the farm

It's so satisfying how the doggoes chase the rats around. It's like adrenaline sports. And by the end of the video, where the mink is killing an already dead rat then there's just behind it, and when they had eye contact -- it's so hilarious how the mink suddenly went for the kill.
It's so cool. I agree, even if rats are pests, killing with poison is just a no-no. So this is great!

My brother has a very unfriendly mink as a pet he adopted from a fir farm. One of the properties near his was a massive hoarder property for many years. When that place was torn down all the rats fled to the surrounding properties. When my brother bought his there where rats in the walls and duct work. So his dog got the rats where it could and the mink when where the dog couldn't. His place hardly ever any rats on the property and if they get in the house the mink and dog make quick work of them.

10:15 That rat has no idea was a mustelid is. That's probably a huge advantage when it comes to hunting brown rats that live near people. I bet brown rats more wild environments would immediately catch a whiff of that mink and run, especially when considering that this species of rat likes to live near water.
Yes you are correct. Rats in more natural settings are much more tricky to catch.

Joe, do your cameras have a 60FPS+ setting? I would love to see the minks in action in super slow-mo, just to see how they get themselves into position behind the rats in such small spaces. They move so quick its a blur. It would be interesting to see.

Growing up on a turkey farm we had a rat terrier named killer. Every so often we would go out and lift up the turkey feeders And killer would have his way With them. This video brings up fond memories of my childhood.
