- What's that green tool you keep using to block your firewood? It's a Mingo Marker!
Good day! I get so many questions asking me what that little green tool is that you see me using in the forest when we are blocking logs for firewood. So, I thought it might be helpful to do a quick overview on the Mingo Marker, and provide a few, simple tips on how to use it. Let's take a closer look at this very simple, easy and accurate firewood marking tool that we have been using for years up here, in the outdoors, at the cottage. Cheers!

Greetings Gord, Lee here, one of the best investments I have ever made for blocking wood. I always used a pole marked at 16 inches, sometimes it would fall behind the log or slip side ways, then you had to reset it, but not with the mingo marker. Once you mark the log no more distractions, just make your cuts. Thanks for your help, keep well, later
Good evening Lee! Agreed! Simple and easy - keeps neighbour Guy very happy to stack consistent lengths of firewood. LOL. Hope you are keeping well. Take good care!
I can certainly see the benefit to the Mingo Marker. The old man would drive finish nails into his axe handle at 6'', 12'', and 24'' from the leading edge of his bit. He'd file them flush with the handle, then walk the log with one hand on what ever spacing he wanted then swipe the tip of the ax to scratch the bark. This was for measuring logs for the sawmill without a tape. I still have his favorite double bit axe with the nails visible as ever though with tiny rust trails in the wood after being there for so long. Nice descriptive video GP.
Now that is some creative thinking T. But I see there's lots of that creativity floating around Tractorman's work yard. Thanks for tuning in!
Hi G.P. from the simplest to the most safisticated you have the tools. They sure make life a lot easier. Thanks for sharing.
Cheers Ronald! All the best!
That is a neat tool for logging! Fast and easy to work! Have a good weekend GP!!
Morning LA! It is super handy. You too - have a good one!
Thank you GP. Gordy.....#292 already? Time sure flies! Keep,it up! Cheers
Morning Tom. Wow! It sure does. Thanks for hanging in there with me! All the best!

You're most welcome Patrick! You too - all the best to your family!
Thats a great gadget GP. Have a good weekend my friend.
You too Dean! All the best!
one of the best things ever made love got four five of them
Cheers John!
Good day GP 😊 You very first demo video were refreshing 😂🥶👍 Keep up the good safe works Cheers !!! 👍
Thanks so much Dave! Cheers!
@@GPOutdoors 👍👍👍😊
Hello Gord. That is a great tool. I looked into it until I saw the cost. Lol. I use a metal coat hanger zip tied to the bottom of the chain saw at the front handle. I bent a 1" hook at each end.
It has 2 great advantages, always with the saw and the paint doesn't run out. 😉
Have a good week.
Alain
Morning Alain! Very creative solution - good stuff! Have a good week out there!
Cheers GP
Hallo gp these mingo markers are the best secret firewood tool in north america.let the europeans use their tapemeasures for the next couple of years.l ve learned a lot from you over there thanks for that ,have a nice weekend and stay safe.
Hey good evening Michael! Thanks for the great comment. You're right - this simple little tool is a big help out in the forest. We have been using one for about 7 years now. I hope you and your family are doing well. All the best and thanks for saying hi today Michael!
The mingle is great for marking firewood. I have all the optional cams for it. I've used it for about 4 years now. I cut split and sell firewood in the Brighton Mi. area. firewoodfred
That's great to hear Fred. Us too. Bob found out about them and got one about 5 or 6 years ago and we have been using it ever since. Hope you are well. have a great week!
I have one too and i love it, makes things so easy to keep everything the same size. Especially when you have more than 1 guy bucking logs
So right Jacob! Great, simple tool to keep our firewood consistent lengths out there. Take care !
Yeah many buckers can make for an interesting stack of wood sometimes. My father made sure years ago that I understood the importance of properly measured wood. We use a stick cut to a desired length and a wood scribe. Comes out right every time.
Thanks! I was _always_ curious about that. I never saw one of those until I started watching your channel.
Cheers MCG! I get a lot of questions on it so I hope that helps a few folks. Be well and all the best!
Hello Ed take care !😊👍

Hi from Allen and Brenda nice looking good
Good morning Allen and Brenda! Hope you are both doing well and the weather is warming up for you out east! Cheers!
@@GPOutdoors yes we are having fun in the sun thank you
One more tool I have to drag out there and keep track of. I can eyeball 16" quite accurately so that's close enough. Cheers 😃
I have worked in firewood since I was a little boy and I have never seen anyone that needed one of these till I started watching UA-cam. Our stove never knew one piece of wood was half inch longer than the other. LOL. Still enjoy watching.
LOL! Thanks Jeff. Try cutting firewood for Guy. He likes all his stacks exactly the same length. :)) LOL! Thanks again - have a great week!
@@GPOutdoors I quess. But it seems little over kill. Unless you doit all day. Watch parts are expensive
Thanks Jerome. I price my parts at almost cost and they are pretty inexpensive my friend. but yes, at some point I will have enough experience to be able to eyeball the right length but until then, I just love this little tool for making them consistent. That's all. Thanks again for watching and for the good comments - always helpful . Be well and enjoy the rest of the weekend!
Nice video. Good review. Neat tool.
Thanks NH!
Neat little tool GP. Seems like a real time saver for those of us who want to cut our wood accurately. Thanks for sharing.
Good evening Dale! Great to hear from you. It's a great tool to have out there. Guy and Bob have been using one for years now. Hope you and yours are keeping well! Cheers!
Good afternoon Gord, great review of the Mingo Marker. Sure would have been handy when I was doing all my firewood cutting. That’s a great tool to keep even cuts of firewood for sure. Thanks for sharing with us, seeing is believing. Fred.
Good evening and thanks Fred! It's a great little tool to have handy out there. Bob found it about 5 or 6 years ago. And he and Guy have been using it ever since. Guy likes how wood lengths consistent for stacking. Super simple and easy. Hope you are having a good week. Take good care!
See you using that Mingo Marker all the time Gord . Thanks for the explanation . Take care .
Thanks Henry! You too!
Well that was short and sweet! Nice job.
Thanks DA! Have a great week!
GP, I use my Mingo Maker all the time. I had to 3D print a 20" wheel for mine. Like you, I tried a lot of different ways to mark for firewood, but the Mingo Marker is the fastest way I have found to do it. Be safe!
Good morning MD! That's pretty creative - good stuff! Have a great week out there! Cheers!
GP, that is the first time I ever heard of that tool. I know I want one though!!
Thanks for sharing. 😀
LOL. Cheers L!
Neat! Very simple
Cheers Dan!
G P thanks
God Bless
PsK
Thanks Peter!
Ya think the company would have made those in florescent pink, for high visibility, I'm always losing stuff in the woods! LOL
LOL! Good day John! Yup - we wouldn't be losing it for sure with that colour. Cheers!
Seen them many times here in the Northeast around Massachusetts by utility companies. Never put 2 and 2 together in that was what you are using. Thank you GP
You're most welcome sir! I thought it might be helpful to take some time to explain it for folks. All the best to you!
Does anyone else want to see the end results. If you all have it fine. This is incomplete at best. Kinda like saying 9 o'clock...... incomplete
HI Jerome. I am not sure what you mean. If you mean the end result of blocking and splitting afterwards, there are lots of videos on the channel for you to see the mingo mark the log, me sawing it, and then splitting it into firewood. Hope that helps answer it for you. Have a great weekend and thanks for watching!
@@GPOutdoors I'm not sure why it matters. You never show the MARK left for the cutter to see. Maybe its implied
I use it
Thanks I’ve never seen one up close.
You're welcome Walter! All the best!
City Slicker paint gun - if you handle a saw long enough, 16" comes natural but this is my opinion. A inch or 2 in length is called a conversation piece when piled lol and your outside pile is always show quality drive 40 miles a hour down the road. Keep making the video's Gord as they are informative.
wtfbuddy1 Would say for that person who is not on the saw on a regular basis, I purchased one from GP’s site, my challenge is I get “rusty” when felling and bucking trees for firewood, first day I need it then ok for the next few days until the next cycle.
@@sherpa972 I agree and we are all getting rusty. Cheers
Cheers Sherpa! Happy it is helping out a bit. Take care!
Thanks GP. I learned by the yard stick.. By eye.. The last person I cut for. I won't work for. Again.. My last wyfe. Her lenkth o wood for the fire. Demand. To much.. Xxoo.
Cheers Brian!
I use my marker all the time out cutting. I thought about putting a rubber band around the wheel to cut down on the slipperiness of the wheel on hard.wood
me too larry! I haven't had an issue on hardwood though. Seems to work just fine on all logs we drop. I'll keep an eye out. Cheers!
How's she goin'? The Mingo Marker is the cat's ass for sure. I love to have the blocks all the same length. Makes the wood pile so much easier to keep straight and true!!! Take care!!
Morning Grampie! LOL. You and Guy too. He likes them all exact for stacking. Hope you folks are keeping busy - Cheers!
I have one and love it but that wing nut sucks. It always falls off, one time it fell off and didn't know it and couldn't find it. So I put a R clip on there and now it never falls off.
Thanks IH! I have never lost one yet, but sounds like a good idea. Have a good evening!
I painted a red line on the blade of my chainsaw at thee point I wanted, before I got used to being able to judge by eye and memory the length I wanted, just saying!
Morning Pete! That's a great idea - good stuff. My 'eye' is not so accurate yet..LOL! Cheers and all the best!
Hi GP, the handle should be longer so you don’t have to bend foward !!!
Thanks J! Cheers!
A little WD 40 wouldn’t hurt the wheel bearing on that mingo marker........
LOL. Good evening Clay. I was thinking the same thing when I watched the final edit. Thanks ! Have a great week!
i have one, used it once and it collect dust for 10 years
Sorry to hear that dc! But hope you are getting out there and keeping busy. Take good care!
looks like a cold front came through
LOL! How did you know CP? Because there wasn't a ton of black flies attacking me or the camera? LOL. You are right. It got down to almost freezing overnight so was still very chilly in the morning. I am not quite sure where those little guys hide out when its cold, but I took full advantage for sure. :)) Cheers!
You should of told everyone it s tree tester and under Canadian law you have to check the tree to make sure it is dead and able to be used for firewood. 😁🤣😂
LOL! Now Brad....:)) Have a good one!
But who is this Mark you kept talking about? 😁😁😁
LOL. He's that little green guy - like the Great Gazoo...:)) Take care!
@@GPOutdoors assuming I watched the Flintstones?
Let's just say I had a feeling you did....:))
@@GPOutdoors let's just say that a lot to me is now in reruns many times over. 😜🤪🤣
I got a dollar (your choice, U.S. or Canadian) says you can consistently come within a half inch of your desired cut length without that fancy marker. It is a cool tool though, and a man can never have too many tools!
LOL. Good evening C! I think with a few more years of experience, I'll get pretty good at eyeing it, but Guy likes his lengths exact. So, for now I get a little help from this handy little tool. LOL. But I'll take the US one please - because the FX was about $0.43 cents the last time I checked. :)) Hope you are well - have a great week C!
Weird video. you say things like
You don't have to "mess with" a magnet on the side of your bar
Like it's difficult. A 16" long piece of 1'2" PVC with a magnet on the end is a cheap, DIY marker that works great and is no more difficult than running that plasticky tool down the log. The cheapest and easiest log marker though is a long, heavy-duty zip tie fastened to the handle of your chainsaw and cut to the desired length from the blade. Flip it back out of the way when you're cutting and out to the side when you're marking. I don't know why people think they need to spend $40 to do a job that a 5 cent zip tie will do just as well.
Sorry cut hundreds cord of wood never used one
Good morning Mac. No worries. You probably have a pretty well trained eye for lengths naturally by now. I'm still bad at judging the lengths but I have a lot to do to catch up to you. LOL. Have a great and safe week out there!
Forgive me for asking. But I just spent Oh 7 minutes to get an insight into this gadget. Why go to ALL THAT. Then dont even attempt to show the results on the surface of the wood. Geez. Beginning, middle, conclusion. Thanks tho
Good evening Jerome! Very sorry for that, sir. I just did the video to answer several questions I was getting on the channel. However, at the 2:36 minute mark in the video, you will see the green dot from the first mark, if that is helpful. The earlier shot of the run all the way up the log was unfortunately hard to see because of the angle of the sun. Thanks for watching though - and all the best to you.
@@GPOutdoors thank you. And its literally right there. Thanks. You tube can a tuff crowd. Sorry
Please, no worries Jerome! I appreciate the feedback - it is always helpful. Helps me to create better videos. :) Be well.
@@GPOutdoors My pleasure. Thank you. I'm in the Wood cutters algorithm I quess. Only dream about cutting that much wood. During Pandemic. I've binged watched Ax Men History channel. Thanks Bud
