  • Kubota B2601 compact tractor. Grapple. Oregon CS300 Chainsaw. Clearing the meadow.
    We're back at it over in Guy's meadow. Today, I head over with the Kubota B2601 compact tractor and my HLA Attachments Root Rake Grapple. We have some roots, small stumps and rocks to rake out of the ground with the Grapple, and more dead saplings to clear out with the Oregon CS300 battery-driven chainsaw. Come join me for a little while up here at the cottage, in the outdoors. Cheers!

    A special thanks to the folks at Oregon Power Equipment for providing the chainsaw for me to try out on the channel!

    What’s better than a tractor for help around the property? A second tractor and a good neighbor friend. Nice work guys, clearing up the property. Imagine the farmer who built that stone wall initially? Hope he had a good neighbor too.
    Spent all of last week clearing brush like yours. It was hot and humid all week in upstate NY. The grapple was worth its weight in gold. We picked up piles and piles of cut brush.
    Not in the market for a new chainsaw, but you’ve given me an idea. My wife is a big help around the property, but skiddish about using a chainsaw. That’s ok,I enjoy the work. She uses “loppers” to cut up the small limbs off of downed trees, as well as brush clearing, ...etc. I think she’d get some use out an electric chainsaw. I’ll float the idea after she watches this video. 😏
    Note at the end of the work day, a nice ( Canadien) Whiskey, and a good cigar on the front porch keeps the bugs away!

      Good morning Rob! You're talking my language. Canadian Rye...:)) I cannot imagine the endurance guys had to have way back then to clear land. Happy you were out and got some great work done on the property. Really satisfying to get through it. She may feel much better with the CS300. Guy won't give it back - it is in his workshop - he uses it alot now. LOL. If you do start thinking about an electric, try to hang on a few more weeks before you buy it, if you can, and keep watching the channel. ;) :)

    We get "Greenheads" this time of year but at least they are found only along beaches and marshes. They take a hunk of flesh out of you but the bite is usually a notch or two below a bee sting. And just before dusk the skeeters come out. My gramps used to say "Stop complaining and bite'm back"! Best regards, Jay

    Great video Gord . Yes those Deer Flies can take a big bite from you . A few times up North camping in my 5th wheel we get these little flies at night . If you have your window open and a light on close to the open screened window those little buggers can get through the screen being attracted by the light . Learned my lesson . No lights on near an open screened window at night . Take care .

    • @GPOutdoors
      @GPOutdoors  4 роки тому

      Good evening Henry! Yup, they are a little annoying at best. How do you enjoy the 5th wheel? Did you take it on trips across Canada, kind of thing, or primarily up north for camping out?

      @@GPOutdoors Hello Gord . I mainly bought it to go camping up North . Not really interested in taking it across Canada . It's my brother who goes with me . I'm not married or anything like that . Maybe if I had a wife I would travel with it . I like sleeping in my own bed and not interested I staying in any hotel . Where we camp it's a 2 hour drive into the bush so you make sure that you bring everything with you that you might need . No running into town if you need something . 4 hour drive to go back and forth from town . I tow a 16ft lund behind my trailer . You need a big truck to do that which I have . Dodge Ram with a 6.7 liter diesel engine . It flies down the highway . LOL . It's about a 12 hour trip or around 1000 k . one way . Nice clean fresh air , great fishing , Northern Lights at times and you get to see the Space Station at night . We love the fact that we are out in the middle of no where . No cell phones service but we bring a satellite dish to watch TV . LOL . We have a satellite phone to keep in contact back home and to use incase of emergencies . I use a 5th wheel because you can tow a boat trailer behind it . Can't do that with a normal ball and hitch trailer . I laugh at the stares we get when stopping to fuel up . Many people have never seen that . Not going this year because of the virus . Oh well . Next year . Take care Gord .

    Great video, Gord! Really enjoyable to see you and Guy working the tractors together. I had to laugh at your description of our Ontario bugs. I came up to my camp last night to get the grass cut and trimming done in the evening and early morning to avoid the heat (and I have orders from the management to be home this evening as tomorrow is Father’s Day). Got all the chores done by 11am, sitting here having a coffee and watching your video outside my trailer under the canopy... and of course, trying to keep the damn mosquitos and deer flies from eating me alive LOL! Not a deer fly to be seen last weekend, but they are in full force today! Fewer mosquitos this weekend (I think because it’s been so dry), but enough to make me apply the deet! Sigh.... I wish September and October lasted about 8 months
    By the way, great work with the grapple. I’ve been putting mine to good work here coding much the same as you. Cheers!

    Man, black flies, deer flies, dragonflies....everything except butter flies !! But one thing I can't get over is the number of rocks you gentlemen turn up. Does the old dog suffer a bit from hip dysplasia ? He kinda holds his haunches down and rear feet together like my 16 year old Malamute used to. The only thing better than a good loyal companion is a second one...and it doesn't matter if its two legged or four...LOL. Man, GP you guys are knocking it dead with the rock and root removal. And yes, I'm binge watching to catch up again....

      LOL, T! I honestly don't know . Koda was taken from an abusive family and Guy adopted him. He never leaves Guy's side, and I'll tell you, if Koda doesn't want you near Guy, there is no chance you are getting close to him. LOL. Yup, when Guy does a job he does it thoroughly - no cutting corners. The Meadow is really shaping up - a little box blade and some grass seeding and in a few months I think it will turn out really pretty. Oh, and blasting a few rocks, which you will see in the morning. :))

    💥 I don't know how you deal with those black flies. They are worse than deer flies or horse flies in my opinion. They might not bite as hard but there are so many of them!! We get summers where the black flies can get bad for awhile but it's not every year like you get. Good luck GP, you need a fly suit like Grampie had in a recent video.

    Gord, another well made and informative video. Thanks for filling in the seasonal biting timeline. Horse flies are bad too, I remember chunks of flesh being taken out of me in the Quebec countryside growing up. I seem to be a natural magnet for anything that wants to bite a human. Where did you get the netting you wear when the mosquitoes and flies are bad in the forest? Also, do you see many bees, wasps or hornets? I am thinking about putting some honey bee boxes in the meadow and growing some lavender there. I hope to have that working in a few years once we settle in late this summer.

      @@GPOutdoors i live just north of Nashville Tennessee. We have a lovely lil bug called a chiggar. They for some reason LOVE ME! It got so bad i was seeking medical assistance. I could walk right behind 3 to 4 other people, they would get a few bites, i would be covered in literally hundreds of not thousands. Yes, it was that severe. I started using Permethrin. In one use i had no bites. It's changed how i face going outdoors again.

    We have horse flies down South Gordo. They are very similar to deer flies. None are our friends! They love to attack when you get near the water. Pool is "at your own risk",

      Morning Mitch! Yup very similar but I think the horse flies are even worse - I guess when you swim, you have to stay under as long as possible. :)) Have a great week out there!

    Part B and Part L... Guessing you have seen the new LX series? And it does make work easier when you have two tractors working together.
    And the only thing worse than a Deerfly bite is a horsefly bite.... :-o

    Hey GP watch Messicks grapple episode on putting too much stress on your grapple and its hydraulics. Something i would never have thought of.. it was a recent video put out in past 3 months or less. Keep up the great videos 😊

    • @GPOutdoors

      Morning CM! Hope you are well. Thanks for the head's up. I did - nothing for me to worry about - I don't use the grapple in the manner he describes. In the early days, while I was learning, I certainly grabbed a few logs that were too long, but haven't done that since I learned about the sideways forces it creates on the tractor. The jaw is designed for gripping and control, not for ripping and pulling. Totally fine to curl the jaw and use it to back-drag the soil. Thanks though - greatly appreciated CM! Take good care and all the best!

      Hi Les! We primarily have the black-legged ticks up here but also have deer ticks. The OFF Deep Woods seems to work pretty well against them. Take care and all the best!

      Good evening and thanks very much Roy! Guy is a pretty great neighbour and has a great sense of humour- always makes working outdoors more fun. I think he wants to leave the old rock wall created by those hard working folks from the past. A little history, I guess. But the grounds are really shaping up, just as he planned. Thanks for tuning in and for the comment today. Enjoy the rest of the weekend!

    Hi G.P. Before when I thought of Canada I always thought cold and snow, but it sounds funny hearing you talk about flys and mosquitos I thought that was a southern thing. I have a question about fuel for your tractor. Do you use off road or on road fuel and do you get it from the gas station in town or have a fuel tank. You use your tractor a lot and I don't know how far town is. Using a lot of fuel can be a lot of trips to town. Thanks for sharing another great video. Have a wonderful weekend

    • @GPOutdoors
      @GPOutdoors  4 роки тому +1

      Good evening Ronald. A great question. I started out using a diesel filter and getting my diesel from the local gas stations, in gas cans. Guy has a big diesel tank on his property and gets it filled with conditioned diesel and he eventually asked me if I would like to fill from his tank. Guy is very kind, as you have probably learned now. So much easier. We share in the cost of the fuel and I fill up from his big tank, and just pay for what I use. Really helpful to have a few neighbours pitch in and have a supply of conditioned fuel (winter conditioned) and to just have the tanker come by as needed to fill the on-premise tank. Thanks for the good question and take care!

      Good day Kevin! It is an HLA Attachments make and it is their Light Duty Root Rake with Grapple - 60". Just a note - it is commercial steel, not high tensile steel ( like some other makes) so it weighs alot more than those types. I love it, personally and am very happy with it - works great but is much heavier than the average. And you will need the 3rd function valve installed on the tractor, if you don't have one yet. Good luck and all the best!
