You have good hands for playing the guitar. Unfortunately I have not played these particular chords before even after almost 50 years and my fingers cannot make all these stretches just yet, but its good to know whats possible. Thank you again, Antoine!
Very good explanation and I really appreciate the emphasis on creating chords from the notes, as opposed to just showing off a heap of chords, thanks from Australia :)
A break down of Matt Uelmen's work from both Diablo 1, 2 and their subsequent expansions = tense chord progression goldmine, as well. imo, Tristram and Rogue Encampment are the strongest examples, but diving deeper into his full body of work is well worth the time it takes to, you know, stay a while and listen. 😏
Amazing . I will be using this approach for building chords . As the open strings are the longest, they are more resonant, in addition to not requiring any fingers to hold
I love your videos dude. you have a great way of teaching what guitar players want to learn. please never stop making videos. you help me love guitar even more.
Antoine that beautiful Opeth song is called "In My Time Of Need" though I imagine you know that 4 years later lol! Thanks so much I love that chord and that amazing song!
@@AntoineMichaudGuitarLooping Oh indeed. Im second year in with the channel. Slow burn. I do it for sharing the ideas. Some better than others but I enjoy them. Passion fuels me.
It's kinda cool to find out my natural way of playing actually being explained to me. I always hear my music sounds really depressing and I never could explain it since I'm not musically trained beyond reading sheet music. Kudos.
I think a true goldmine for this type of chords is post metal/shoegaze bands Alcest and Les Discrets. Especially Les Discrets, they completely nail this type of writing!!
Mario Bertrand when I first heard Alcest I was literally listening with my mouth open. It’s literally the definition of how I want my music to sound like. Absolutely phenomenal band
Finally a dark ambient lesson! Nice! It's the weekend here in Iran and I have enough time to practice and try to make new chords, but one of my most favorite "dark" chords is Amadd9 which goes like this : -----X----- -----0----- -----7----- -----5----- -----0----- -----0----- It makes a very "cold" mood in every song. I wrote dark ambient, black gaze and even jazz songs and used this chord as a start!
It's my favorite "black metal" taste. I listened to most of that "trve kvlt" thing in my teenage years, but as I got older, I preferred to listen to more ambient-ish, positive and nice music from that evil genre.

Now I know why I like so much Hope leaves from Opeth
I stumbled onto this clip. I was partially watching, thinking that's cool and all. Then he mentioned Opeth and I snapped to attention. The presentation is informative and interesting, but Opeth is a great source for this subject. Try a band called Novembre (spelt that way) from Italy.
Hello what guitar is that? Im just getting started with guitars and sound of this one is amazing. Bdw do you guys recommend to start with guitar like this or get normal cheeper guitar for beggining ?
Glad i found your channel because imma get a guitar Next month. Could you pleaye do a tutorial how to play chords/melodys like in juicy j - cell ready? The guitar ist Just too sick in there
Hey Antonie, does this work the other way around? What if we want to build very happy chords. Can you apply the same thing like 3 or 4 notes in order from a major scale in a row to create a happy chord or does this only work with Dark minor Chords? Thanks,
Thank you for making this video. I have to say though, I have never heard dark ambient with guitar, only electronic with maybe some piano. Do you have examples of dark ambient musicians who use guitar? My interest is piqued.
You mention friction. Can you explain what you mean by that? Or perhaps make a video about it. I've heard this thrown around before, also on other channels, but without a proper understanding I cannot apply it.
You are right, I should have talked about what it means. For me, friction means two notes that when played together, sound harsh and unpleasant. They kind of make faster waves that are more unpleasant to the ear. But this is only when they are played alone. It is possible to add other notes around them to give them a context, and then, they become beautiful in their new context because they suddenly have new functions of chord extensions that add more depth to the chord.
@@AntoineMichaudGuitarLooping Thank you, this is a a method I can work with. I found a video explaining dissonance but that quickly became mathematical. Music, to me, is feeling and I can't feel numbers.
Idk why buy the second I clicked on this video, I was not expecting your voice to sound like that lmao. Not a bad thing in the slightest, just weird it shocked me lol
Antoine : Nice tutorial ! My fingers are way too short to play that chord on a classical guitar so I modified . First, I dropped both E strings to D to give me a double drone option and deepen the tonality and I played it in D minor. Then, after I recorded it, I dropped the wav file down a half step to put it in C#m. I gave you a shout out in the song description and a link to this video. Thanks for the inspiration ! ua-cam.com/video/llvKIjNx-0M/v-deo.html
Really nice chords and performance, but this doesn't sound dark to me. Ambient, yes, kind of "aerial". I'd be glad if someone could explain to me why they find this dark.

The opeth song is in my time of need. He is not joking when he said opeth songs are a gold mine for these kind of chord progressions.
It's from the Opeth song "In My Time of Need".
Bingo!
great song from a great album
Beautiful song.
Somebody listens to King Crimson
the best
5:08 - 5:25 simply captivating!
It's similar to Go Slowly by Radiohead, or also The Thief by Can
True!! Is there an existing full version of that? 😩
Wow, sounds perfect for atmospheric black metal, or dsbm! Thank you!
This stuff is so hard to find. Thank you very much!
Opeth - In My Time Of Need (it's one of the first songs I've learned to play from them). Amazing band, through and through!

This chord (Em add9/11) is also in the song Routine by Steven Wilson, from 7:25 of that song....
Steven Wilson and Mikael Akerfeldt are very close! They had projects together and Wilson produced some of Opeth's albums. So I'm not surprised!
