It seems that enemy deaths in the game are only registered if the enemy goes into the death animation (the explosion) and since none of the enemies in the stage actually go into the animation, they’re technically still alive. I mean, if you ignore the fact that they’re all falling several stories to the ground to a possibly worse death than taking a kick or a shuriken to the face, but still, technically alive as far as the game is concerned.
