Bit of a late reply but there are two versions, this is the arcade version. The home console version for megadrive has a different colour palette and no spoken audio.
Struck me as odd when I saw it, too. But... katakana is also used for emphasis, or some proper nouns. I'm leaning into emphasis (because I don't know enough Japanese to guess otherwise). Maybe they thought the kanji (忍者) would blend into the background more, so it makes the game stand out a little better in Japan. This game is about busting up some NINJAS. Get them NINJAS! You're such a boss for playing a NINJA game, you cool kid you!
This is an awesome run! One thing I wonder about: Is it possible to kill the goblin looking enemy at 8:17? The run was perfect all the way up to that point, but I figure it might've been one of those deals where the games doesn't allow enough time at the beginning of the level to kill that enemy before he jumps to his death on his own..
So nice to not see that up-close-and-personal ninja appear in the bonus stage :) Also, how do you bring down a chopper? Toss a handful of ninja stars at the windshield. Roger. So the last boss is Loki?
The only place I was ever able to play this game was a movie theater. The joystick was broken keeping you from facing left. What tool is used for the assist?
Speed run? When i was a kid in the 90s, There was no other way to play but as fast as you can, kill everything. With minimun use of shurikens and those second ranged weapon, relaying mostly on close combat (punck, kick or katana), no usage of special atacks at all (tornado, lightning and that third stuff).
These are killing blows, right? I understand that every person here is guilty for child kidnapping, but look at that guy at 4:48. His dying wound is to bleed out via his hamstring. Alone on a cliffside, a slow demise. That's a harsh way to die.
Man, I've finished this game a bunch of times over the years, and I never noticed that typo. (I guess I was too distracted by the awful comma placement)
It's correct. An explanation: Ninjutsu is spelled にんじゅつ in Japanese. The Japanese language uses a syllabary, not an alphabet. Hiragana and katakana symbols (generally) combine a consonant and a vowel. They're represented on a chart, ordered by the consonants. For example: ta た, ti ち, tu つ, te て, to と. That last symbol, つ, is our problem child. While つ falls on "tu" on the chart, it is pronounced "tsu". Same for ち, which is "ti" but pronounced "chi".
From the TAS submission description: "In the stage 3 boss fight, the spinning statues probably should've all been destroyed as well considering this is a 100% run. That was actually done for this run at one point but there didn't appear to be anything to it and it was kinda boring (just a lot of jumping and shooting). It seemed to take away from the flow/momentum of the run so that boss fight was re-run and the statues were skipped."
I like speed run that actually makes you do things instead of skip everything. So I really appreciate tas run like this.
agreed!
The bonus stage swag with the throwing stars had me dying of laughter.
6:11 Best boss strat ever.
Ancient ninja art of "abusing the hitboxes." Very secret, as no enemy who's seen it has lived.
Definitely in the Top 20 arcade games of all time.
I agree
Best Shinobi video I've ever seen. Awesome!!
Excellent TAS 👍
ending felt like a prologue.
This and the metroid series are probably the only games I can actually watch somebody else play from start to finish. 👌
I played the hell out of this as a kid, the jumping ninjas on the bonus stages always wrecked me.
I've never seen nor heard of this game up until today, but hearing "welcome to bonus stage" immediately made me think of Donkey Kong 64.
Very surprised you never heard of this game. Its an all time classic
너무 잘하시네요
좋은 영상 감사합니다
Why do I remember this game graphics totally different from when I was a kid?
Easy; CRT screens of the arcade vs LCD screens of today. Completely different looks for each.

"Impressive. Most impressive."

Why would "ninja" be written in katakana? Is it a borrowed term??
Struck me as odd when I saw it, too.

Yes, you can kill the first gobling using the magic power. But you will loose 5000 bonus points at the stage end
INCREÍBLE .

5:25 WTF is Spiderman doing in a Shinobi game

The only place I was ever able to play this game was a movie theater. The joystick was broken keeping you from facing left. What tool is used for the assist?
Several actually: Memory observing, Lua scripting, Code disassembling, Input file editing. Some are used more than others.

This is a nice run. Can you do a TAS run with no projectiles used in stages and bosses on max difficult and bullet speed?
These are killing blows, right? I understand that every person here is guilty for child kidnapping, but look at that guy at 4:48.

Man, I've finished this game a bunch of times over the years, and I never noticed that typo. (I guess I was too distracted by the awful comma placement)
Beau O It’s not a typo. It’s just how the _tsu_ syllable is romanized sometimes and it’s correct. It’s written as _ninjutu_ but read as _ninjutsu._
