As a Japanese guy, I reckon that many foriegners who love Japan love our past more than us lol
I’m hoping to venture out to Osaka someday…
nihongo wakarimasen , daisuki desu
Everything sucks now thats why
My love for your nation did stem from history class, yes.
それは本当です、外国人はとてもイライラします
I'm an old american guy in his 60's that moved to japan 2 years ago. Its kind of shocking for me to hear some places here still playing music from 50+ years ago. While shopping in a old mom n pop grocery store in osaka they were playing big band music and a lady dressed in a long dress all dolled up with high heels pushing a shopping basket goes by. It was a surreal moment for me. Just for a split second i was transported back to 1969, back to my childhood when my mother used to drag me to the grocery store.
Many forgein Gen Z & Millenial loves old Japanese Music these day.
Its history/nostalgia can be quite complicated (and being much older than the U.S.) Suffice it to say, it cannot be summed up properly in one short video.
In the 70's ans 80's Japan was SO RICH it had a higher GDP than ALL OF ASIA COMBINED and was literally DAYS away of beating the US economy, their economy ALMOST surpassed the US economy plenty of times during these two decades. So yeah, the nostalgia must hit hard
Well… let’s be honest here, china got in front of japan only because of their ability to produce the cheapest fake rubber dogsh1t from slave labor.
What's the source of this? Their technology?
@@redefinedliving5974 real estate and stock market
true, it was kind of a bubble though so the US probably would've come out on top in the long run... the plaza accords sped that way up lol

i was expecting it to be vlog but it turned out to be a high-effort video essay. i could see the effort that went into script writing and editing. I'm afraid the audience you have cultivated are simple vlog enjoyers who might not appreciate this - but this gold
Its alright man, it was a video I wanted to make about a topic I was truly interested in, if it was even a tad bit thought provoking, I’m really happy. I guess its about the balance, dont worry I’ll be back with the more “commercial” vlogs as that may help grow the channel but sometimes you just want to be creative and not look for numbers n shit
But i want to really thank you for appreciating the video 🙏
@@Setsuna21 honeslty it felt like a piece of art. from the script, to your voice, the editing, the storytelling... the way you incorporated the elements that makes the video your own... i really like it and I'm pretty sure there is an audience for it as well. i mean it would feel really unfair if a video like this would get lesser views as opposed to a vlog that takes few minutes to edit and upload. if this is once in a while thing and you will go back to doing vlogs again, it would be nice if you do it the way pewdiepie does ever since he moved to japan. there is a Japanese aesthetics to his vlogs that's hard to explain in words - I get the same feeling from yours as well
@@Setsuna21 i hope this blows up and you get new audience and that motivates you to do more videos like this
@@Setsuna21 I agree with him, this is a great video, thanks for making it. On a side note, I see you have used a cover of a City hunter 2 anime ending at the end😉
@@teran1237 Yes mate! "Still Love Her" is one of my fav songs ever, sadly can't use the real deal for obvious reasons
I don't think it's only Japan. The 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, even early 90's are held in high regard in most countries of the world for different reasons. Better food, higher standards of morality, higher standards for art, better situation with money, better social life.
Art and Social life have truly fallen
@@igweogba6774 big facts, on all of the above
Not sure how. Most of the places had on average less access to quality food, higher rates of crime and poverty, lower levels of art and quality in art. Right now there is just soooo much art! You might not like the popular art and that is cool. The size and scope of art today is so large that there is something for everyone and that at a high level. You need to search today.
But everyone nowadays is worse off in the sense that nobody believes that the future for the kids is going to be better than their life. Economical growth stagnates or even regresses.
Japan with its 3 lost decades of economic stagnation and a population that is old and looking back at their youth is the best example of what will happen to many countries that become gerontocracies
Any time someone points to the 50s and says something like "higher standards of morality" it's like there's only so many things you can be dog whistling. 👀
Heck I'm not even sure what you're talking about with food. Is it the casseroles made from canned goods you're talking about or just generally all the stuff we would eventually learn was destroying our health?
One of the reasons nostalgia is considered toxic is it creates people who think this way, that somehow there was a golden age where everything was better, but what you think the 50s-70s were like is not what they actually were.
@@uetzel L take... 90s were so secure in my country, we had higher morals and better ways to live. Process food was rare and people were not really into it. Corporations were not into our privacy as they do now. People will go out, make friends, gather in many places, less anxiety, less depression, etc And, for Art... Art was, without a doubt 10000000000x times better than now. The level and quality of art was so much higher than what we have today... if you can even call it "art".
I don't think japan is more or less obsessed with it's past than other countries nut they seem to be very good at preserving it. Like there's care and attenrion paid to the things of the past which is really inspiring.
Gosh .... can't explain how many tines i rewatched your old videos ..... holly molly please be regular , love you pal

I'm 40 years old & yes I can safely say Japan in the 80's & 90s were very different than today. Both have their own pros & cons but yeah looking back at my old photos & handycam video recordings back in the day in Tokyo makes me realize what a different world we're living in righ now so I understand the natsukashii feeling
Grandma's words are definitely true, and bro the editing in video u really transported me to old Japan love it
I did notice that when I lived in Japan and found a restaurant or izakaya that I liked, often many of the Japanese reviews on Google would mention the "showa feeling" of the place. I guess I'm a sucker for that era of Japan as well.
I'm Japanese but I feel non-Japanese people are way more obsessed with Japan's nostalgic past than actual Japanese people.
Its definitely true in my case mate 😂
Yeah I think the same, Japanese people are not that obsessed about it's past any more than foreigners. Also most foreigners mistook that Showa era is all about city-pop and neon culture while those are only subculture. My Japanese friend who grew up in Showa-era and love Showa music doesn't care that much about city-pop.
@@thescope4373 I like city pop but a lot of 90s kids hated the genre, especially Yamashita Tatsuro, because it was too cheesy and too capitalistic.
Honestly that's prolly true for every gen. I see loads of gen z kids hating our era's music too. @@mokuseinoosa
True, but it's definitely prominent in developed countries than developing ones. That era wasn't good for most.
Showa era (especially mid-late 70s through mid-80s before the bubble) was really peak Japan, according to me - Japan was so far ahead in just about EVERYTHING - automotive, shipping, construction, electronics, banking/finance, technology, service sector and hospitality - the west including the US and UK really had no chance. This is a funny video from a guy speaking British English and Hindi and Japanese with an introductory restaurant with a Tamil billboard.
Love the nostalgia vibe you put in the video. Well done and thanks.
I´m 100% sure that´s the whole reason why most of the world loves Japan. Their attachment to the past and how they represent it in the present. Most countries have dichted the past and only talk about it in a negative way. So to find a place that is the opposite, is quite refreshing for most.
This is wrong. Literally like 90 percent of Asia hates japan because of what they did in ww2. Japan romanticizes the “good” parts of their past but they completely ignoring the absolutely atrocious things they have done in the past. Documenting and admitting to the negative things is an extremely important thing to do so that we will actually learn from our past mistakes rather than repeating them.
Absolutely not the reason.
man isnt this peak level of video editing?
Dear Japanese... do not ever loose yourself fully, to modernization...
I deeply admire your culture, how you kept your identity with you... adapt somehow without loosing yourselves to the ugly change...
This is such a great video.
Editing is perfect, the way u talk about obsession with nostalgia and explained it was also perfect

Your editing is way too good man 🔥Glad you uploaded again! 💙
I was born in Showa 56. Nowadays I don't have much more left beyond the natsukashii feeling.
Funny that you'd use put a 3d model of an FC RX-7 in the video as well.. it brought on even more of the natsukashii feelings. I used to drive one of those, it was my first car and I still remember all those nights of driving down the expressway and listening to X-Japan or some other hair metal band from the west like White Lion, Skid Row or Twisted Sister.
Can't blame them for having nostalgia for the later half of the Showa era.. cause hell, if I could re-live my life at any time or place in history... I know that latter half of the Showa era would rank very high on that list. And I didn't even grow up there, I grew up in the west! lol
upload regularly bro you can make a good youtube channel with your editing skills
This level of editing takes a significant amount of time, so I don't think he'd be able to upload on daily basis even if he wanted to, without dropping the video quality

From reading about Japanese history to studying the culture, Japan has always existed outside of the rest of the globe as an anomaly. It's history has always saw it as peers with the Europeans who were technologically superior yet equals intellectually, the Japanese existed isolated for thousands of years at their own discretion with the occasional interaction with China or Korea until the Europeans showed up. Japan eventually rapidly modernized thanks to the fact Japanese people had always been well equipped intellectually to become a global power in a matter of years. Japan in a very small moment of it's history became well involved internationally before it all crumbled apart in 1945 after WW2 ended. The Japanese learned their lesson when getting involved globally and simply kept to themselves but in a new way with the rise of trade and globalization. Now Japan exists as isolated as possible in the modern world, a bubble of sorts. And inside of it lives a bygone era in most countries where people still rely on paper documents, use fax machines, and use physical media for movies, TV shows, music, and video games. But they are also a digital society too, with streaming services, some of the fastest internet speeds globally, and access to social media. Japan exists entirely in it's own world and I think many people love Japan for the fact it's entirely separated from everything else.
Very insightful! After roughly 10 min, you feel like you watched a 1 hour documentary! Very well prepared info and you really transported the vibe! とても見やすい!
This video was very well done. BTW, there is a very fun Showa museum in Yufuin called Yufuin Showakan.
Your hard work into editing scripting and alignment along with relevant info is really commendable! Respect !!
Man I love this vintage filter on the videos. Very natsukashii
you are totally correct with the fact that Japan seems to be a society which likes to cherish its past more than its present. I have also realized this thing through their different medias like anime and instagram reels. Somehow for some reason this feeling of nostalgia is always present in their culture which always fascinated me and thought if someone is out there who thinks the same as me
ngl your channel is one of those hidden gems you rarely stumble, love your videos bro
It's not just Japan... same in Argentina. I look for those 90s elements... I returned to my Nintendo 64, my Gameboy, seeing old tech and getting excited about, watching old shows and Anime once a day like I used to do. I started hating modern tech more and more. Life was slower, relationships were closer and lasted longer, places to gather were abundant.... we "moved forward" but, to what? at this fast speed... why? Embrace tradition, reject modernity.
Really something about current gen feels wrong. I am genz but have read alot of literature from those past times.
Bro you literally are making one of the best videos about japan, the colour grading that you've done in this is absolutely stunning with the subtle story telling voice which makes this the best seriously, was waiting for a vid since long. Keep up the good work .それと日本は常に懐かしい感じ。
I'm not sure the problem of Japan is nostalgia more than demography. I love how you made this video. So beautiful.
Interesting. I'm from Pakistan 🇵🇰 and see nostalgia in our elders from rotary telephone to old drama serials because changes in modern day like rise of internet is too alienating to them
Dude the vibes are so good!

An aging demographic leads to a surge in nostalgia.
bhai apki editing ka big fan bro... 🫡, ye to yese lgra tha ki koe netflix documentary dekh raha hu
This nostalgia is the last pitstop before we usher in the world to come, for better or the worst.
That "setsuna" insert (with the great font!) in the period-correct "この番組は、ご覧のスポンサーの提供でお送りします" ad cover at the beginning with the VHS tracking lines is pretty slick as is the overall composition and video editing and grain... but that "町田"= "मा चुदxx" 駄洒落 in dehati Malviya Nagar sadak-hindi at 2:15.... really?😖🤣... so much of what's shown here is actually nostalgic for me who lived four years as a grade school kid in Tokyo between 1979-83 (when Gundam RX-78, Original Yamato, Ginga Tetsudou 999 etc. all released)... I too had only one fellow Indian friend back then... who's now also in the US like me but in Robotics! How time flies.
I have been waiting for a long time, what an amazing editing you do of your videos 🤞🌸😊

You nailed it. As the long as the future seemed bright, it was all good. YOu see a similar thing in the US right now. Kids are into 90s/00s fashion, some are getting old gaming systems over modern stuff, and even CRT tvs are coming back.

But I also feel that Japan has always been obsessed with nostalgia. Reading old haikus, you will realize there’s an obsession with the passage of time, seasons, the transience of life. This has been a core aspect of Japanese aesthetics for a long time.
Great video. Beautiful shots and beautifully edited.
Many brands like Sony, Toyota or Honda were super popular pretty much everywhere and the superconductor industry in Japan was booming. Personally, I'm a massive motorsports fan. The pre-Rossi era of MotoGP isn't well know but when you look at the 125cc, 250cc and 500cc bike categories in the 1980s and 90s, it was literally around 80% Japanese bikes, which won close to 100% of all races. Being a Yamaha fan nowadays, it's a hard time for me, given how MotoGP is now dominated by Ducati, Aprilia and KTM whereas Yamaha and Honda are at the back of the grid, all while Suzuki has left the sport entirely in 2022. So, despite having never lived through that period, I feel that nostalgia as well. All my favourite things are Japanese, from cars to gaming consoles. Most of my favourites games are PS2 games after all.
Having said that, the nostalgia is certainly felt. I'm a NewJeans fan and their recent album was made to have a mix between Korean and Japanese, hence why they performed at the Tokyo Dome this year and performed multiple times on Japanese TV. They made 4 songs and 3 of them (Bubble Gum, How Sweet and Supernatural) all had a very clear 1980s Japan sort of vibe, even if they were filmed mostly in Jeju and Taiwan. The aesthetic they were going for was clear.
i was waiting for your video for soooooooo long
Best time anywhere was the mid 00's right before the smartphone and social media fried eveyones brain.
This video is stunning! Time to dive into your backcatalog I guess.
Love the retro vibe 😮. About the nostalgia part, I think we seek the same escapism when we read Enid Blyton or Harry Potter books , so I guess there is nothing wrong with it especially with all that is happening around the world. It can be someones safe space, a place to retreat to when the going gets tough. Just dnt get stuck there forever.
Exactly my friend
First time I've seen anything from your channel. Simultaneously nostalgic (my wife & I grew up during the latter part of Showa) and an inspiring message to create that buoyant, aspirational drive that will make Reiwa great!

yeah they have Showa museums all over Japan
Japan's incredible and I love the preservation of their history. It's a beautiful country resilient in dealing with hardship, earthquakes. The people are beautiful and graceful. Nostalgia isn't necessarily toxic. It is based on our memories and memories are what define people and why we're so interesting. It would be tragic to action the eradication of its historical buildings , shrines in the name of progress and hinder the desire to tap into the former generations past. I guess we've the technology to share a window into your parents past with the click of a mouse. Inevitably many are drawn into those worlds knowing that it really existed with the vast vault of digitised film footage available in an instant without needing our great grandparents try to explain it to their younger generations.Japan even has 21 st century modernity from fifty years ago. An industrial powerhouse that maintains a quaint and charming appeal with a vast history of modern development as well. I believe our current time is rife with irreversible problems regardless of which country we live in especially if you live in a country where free thought is permissible. We in New Zealand are forced to be obsessed with the past as our history is so brief. It's ephemeral compared to Japan or China. Great channel. Much appreciated 👍
