- Following a major in-house overhaul, the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway welcomed back Mountain Class No6 "Samson" with a bang as they held a one-day event to celebrate the locomotives' recommissioning, dubbed 'The Relaunch of Samson'.
Having last steamed in 2013, anticipation had been building over the last few months for the return of the second of the railways' Mountain Class 4-8-2 locos. Re-emerging in early 2018, the loco is resplendent in Prussian Blue, now devoid of Smoke Deflectors and red Driving Rods. The event featured numerous bonuses, including a parallel run on the stretch between New Romney and Hythe, frequent double-heading and a triple-headed run.
Locomotives:
RH&DR Pacific Class - No2 "Northern Chief"
RH&DR Mountain Class - No5 "Hercules"
RH&DR Mountain Class - No6 "Samson"
RH&DR Pacific Class - No7 "Typhoon"
RH&DR Pacific Class - No8 "Hurricane"
RH&DR Diesel Class - No12 "J.B. Snell"
All footage filmed on Saturday the 21st of April 2018. - Авто та транспорт
This just HAS to be THE best miniature railway in the Country. Absolutely fabulous. I’d give anything to drive this line!
the world even!
it's 71 years since I was on these trains. We were camping in Dymchurch. My Parents, Brother and self. We went on the train each day to either Romney or Hythe or just stayed in Dymchurch, Hopefully, next year will be reliving my memories.
I first went on this line in 1947 when Laurel & Hardy came to open the line for the Summer Season.
It’s just a great day out down there 👍👍
Nice job, like the camera work and light touch on the zoom outs. Great to see Samson in such fine form.
Well made footage. Thank you.
Thanks very much
Riding the R H & DR is now a bucket list item for me
Very much worth it
Great video of a great railway❤

welcome back, welcome back. welcome back.
Samson back on the track, when the COVID 19 rules are relaxed, I may revisit the RHDR, and see SAMSON in steam for the first time
The 2-8-0 Locos were built originally to power the trains which would take the line up to Sandling Junction to meet up with the Main line; unfortunately this line did not get built.
Slight correction. They were originally built to handle anticipated ballast and other freight traffic, which never materialised. When the Sandling junction was proposed, they were considered for the route, until the idea was dropped. Also, they're 4-8-2's.
Great video, thumbs up + sub. Greetings from Denmark :)
Hurricane still stands as the beast of the RHDR she is fierce has her own personality fast and beautiful oh... And that blue 😍
1000% agree, my favourite engine by far
Love the shot at 2:30
Cheers
NICE indeed!
How fast are they running?
Greetings from Buenos Aires
Cheers
Ricardo - the official limit is 25 mph (roughly 40 kmph). If you look at Hurricane coming under the bridge at 16.00 it has to be right on the limit, maybe a bit over. I went there three weeks ago for the first time since I was a tiny kid. It is really an amazing line, because the locomotives are working at the limits of their power and adhesion. So at 25 mph, with rolling of the trains and piston speeds of the locomotives, it feels more like 75 mph. Considering this was really a rich man's folly, it is a wonder of the world. IT is not on the Unesco World Heritage list (that is a PR game in any case), but it jolly well should be. Except that costs a lot of money which they don't have (and shouldn't spend it on that nonsense in any case).
The limit is 25 but they can do 32 mph

As far as I'm aware, none of the RH&DR locomotives or rolling stock are for sale.

What is the max speed? Very impressive
25mph, lower in some sections.
@@TheSouthernerYTChannel is that the allowed maximum for that class/Scale engine? I would assure 40 mph would be the standard speed limit.
Limit on the RH&DR. Not sure about other lines.
@@TheSouthernerYTChannel Copy. Thanks.
No worries
It a mazed me that no one has stuck them self to the track with all that coal smoke.and if they do they are f..king stupid .these will be the only thing running when the lights go out.bring back steam
