- Double-headers, triple-headers, parallel running, triple-headed parallel running, and a magnificent multi-header; this gala was sensational!
As the winter months approach, the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway rounded off their main operating season in style, hosting their 'Autumn Steam & Diesel Gala' over the weekend of October 23rd-24th. The event featured every single operational steam locomotive from the home-fleet, as well as a duo of diesels to bolster the line up.
Among the theatrics, the gala featured frequent non-stop trips. On the Saturday, one such trip featured the RH&DR's original trio of Pacifics; No1 "Green Goddess", No2 "Northern Chief" and No3 "Southern Maid", triple-heading a 28 mile non-stop service from Hythe to Hythe via Dungeness. On the Sunday, a similar run took place, but with the Mountain pair; No5 "Hercules" and No6 "Samson" at the helm. To conclude the timetable on Day 1, a triple-headed parallel run took place from Hythe to New Romney. However, to conclude the weekend, a spectacular multi-header was staged with all 7 currently serviceable 'Mainline' steam locomotives. Appearing in numerical order, the 7 locomotives lead a mega consist of 22 carriages down from New Romney to Dungeness and back.
Locomotives:
RH&DR 'North American' Pacific Class - No9 "Winston Churchill"
RH&DR Pacific Class - No1 "Green Goddess"
RH&DR Bug Class - No4 "The Bug"
RH&DR Mountain Class - No6 "Samson"
RH&DR Pacific Class - No2 "Northern Chief"
RH&DR Pacific Class - No3 "Southern Maid"
R&ER Diesel Class - "Shelagh of Eskdale"
RH&DR Diesel Class - No12 "J.B. Snell"
RH&DR Krupp Pacific Class - No11 "Black Prince"
RH&DR Mountain Class - No5 "Hercules"
All footage filmed on Saturday the 23rd, and Sunday the 24th, of October 2021. - Авто та транспорт
They always seem to know how to put on a show, definately a railway on my "to-visit" list in the future!
Cheers James! Can heartily recommend it - you'll likely find one day isn't enough.

I was at the Gala yesterday all day at New Romney. I loved seeing the multi-header, also they took Hurricane out of the sheds for everyone to look at. Best of all, I saw and met Will Finniss driving the Bug.
Glad you enjoyed your day. The multi-header was a fantastic spectacle!
Missed seeing No8 - heard about its appearence from someone else as well
do you know what happened to No.8? she's my fav loco and i missed seeing her this year ;-;
@@YoshiTrainSpotter35 ah ok so it's nothing bad ^^
@@xYoshiLP.
Beaten to the explanation.
No8's boiler ticket has expired, awaiting overhaul.
No7, similar situation. Though is returning to the railway within the next year, for overhaul.
No10 is now under overhaul.
Such a lovely little railway, they run trough some stunning scenery and hold several records I think.
The longest and fastest "model railway", you could see it as such because the locomotives are scaled down standard gauge examples loosely based in Gresley's A1, his never built 4-8-2 design, an American 4-6-2 and a Bavarian railways S3/6.
They also may have the record of the longest train in preservation (on the vehicle count) and smallest railway overpasses allowing the crossing of full size road traffic.
I rode on their trains and the speed is scale express speed, you can see this well on this video.
Its crazy how a steam locomotive, barely as tall as an adult, can be so damn fast. I love every minute of this video!
Thanks very much! The wonders of engineering
The shot of the parallel run running with lights was spectacular! Thx for posting 👌🙏
Thanks very much! That shot was very touch and go, with rapidly fading light - ultimately, more luck than judgement.
Beautiful sights. Evoke many nostalgic memories of dad as senior signalman in Bulawayo. After taking his lunch to him I’d watch the 20th class Garretts leaving at full steam for Salisbury and the Victoria falls. Speeds and sights are great but those long shots of the rails give me the willies. Absolutely beautiful models of those engines. Thank you.
The line is 95 years old in July of 2022 and is still going strong, delighting children and adults alike. Especially nice to see the little mustard engine, 'The Bug' running at full speed.
Travelled on those trains many times when I was a youngster, took my daughter on one of the Santa Specials, and the Day of Syn at Dymchurch has always been a regular family outing. Thank you for bringing back many happy memories.
More than welcome, and I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Been meaning to visit for the "Day of Syn".
This little railway is absolutely stunning! 🤩
Even better in person
Surprising the speeds they run with the way the track looks in some spots but nevertheless very cool
You could see my house in this video ☺️
its actually only 25mph, and most trains don’t go that fast
The condition of the track looks apalling!
@@BrokenIETthey used to go 30 mph
If the tracks were better looking then the trains would travel a bit faster like 50 or 60 to 70mph
its interesting to think some of these engine are nearly 100 years old, Lets just hope they can continue to go on for more years to come
Excellent to see the railway again. Fond memories from my younger days. Have to say though, as has been said elsewhere, the track looks scarily rough and bumpy.
First time to see Green Goddess without her small Crosby chime whistle... ! Miss it...
Amazing to see the speeds they carry and how off kilter the rails are!
Always love RH&DRy! Thank you for posting! Absolutely amazing!
Thanks very much, Chris! Always a fun one to visit.
Aww they’re just so cute!
Fantastic thanks for that, went there once when I was very small happy days.
Thanks very much!
I love how they also have Diesels running on the line
The wonders of some very clever people to have produced these incredible scale steam locos!
True toy train with amazing speed & look
I was there on the Saturday! In fact, i think i saw myself😅 Absolutely excellent gala, especially that seven loco train at the end! Marvelous work as always!
Six locomotive finale, Green goddess. Northern Chief. Southern Maid. Hercules. Samson. Winston Churchill. Black Prince hooting and whistling
Lovely to see this, thanks for posting :) The track's looking a bit rough in places, but probably no more than it was back in the 70s and 80s when I had summer jobs on the Romney :) Great memories.
"Track's a bit rough in places" the same way "Titanic had something of a leak."
Imagine having this run behind you back yard!
Thanks so much for your filming this special weekend.
Brilliant mix of steam , diesel and the lovely countryside there. Will hopefully make it to the next one.
It was so fun I loved it thanks rhdr
Was there for Saturday and saw the cavalcade at the end for Sunday. Did get on the parallel run as well and the Bug. In the last shot I was there but nearer to the points. Pretty spectacular!
They pulled off an excellent event - all the staff seemed to enjoy themselves too.
Look at them steamers they’re together on one train
Beautiful, and the Finale was Grand. Thank you for uploading this special steaming event. 👍👌
Thanks very much, glad you enjoyed the video!
Very cool video and awesome catches, the RH&DRy really looks like an awesome operation/railroad.
One word...superb!
Can only echo the sentiment
Well done event ! Greetings from Germany!
Nice opening shot, No 9 Winston churchill and No 1 Green Goddess come out of the shed together
Thank you - got very lucky
Nice waving from the passengers
Superb railway one of the best
I love this little railway, gotta visit some day
Well worth the trip
Sensational video. Looked like a lot of fun.
Thanks very much! Was quite relaxing behind the camera for a change.
Gotta love that long train at the end. British Rail can't hook that many coaches together.
Indeed, modern trains on most railways tend to be woefully adequate for the services they're running on.
Well, the RHDR sure know how to throw a party, a rock and roll one at that!!!! Twin line triple headers and a septuple (?) header, bonkers. Nicely put together Matthew, you love it down there don't you?!!👍🏻❤
It's always an inimitable experience. It was great to see them really turn up the theatrics for this year.
Thanks very much, Bob! Is it that obvious?
@@TheSouthernerYTChannel I can see the attraction now, I was never "into" Small Railway Engines until I visited. Good to see Black Prince again and doesn't The Bug make an excellent leaf blower in your opening shot?!!!!
Completely agree. While I had a level of appreciation for narrow gauge railways, it was the Romney that really made me get the appeal.
Certainly does! Was just hoping not to have a full repeat of the Eddystone shot.
Excellent video of these perfect miniature icons of steam 👍👍
Thanks very much
@@TheSouthernerYTChannel You're welcome
Wow brilliant footage 👍
Thanks very much!
No 4 "The Bug" with four coaches, the Bug's Breakfast Bash
A really great video.
Thank you very much for your quite successful efforts.
Most impressive to see the Bug at speed.
The R.H.&D.R. is my favourite 15" gauge line in the south-east ;-) and I hope to be able to visit it as soon as travelling makes sense again.
Best wishes
Dirk
Nice catch. Thanks for sharing.
Cheers
Fantastic Video mate, was great to meet you and having a good chat during that weekend.
Cheers, Edward
Cheers! Was good to meet you too - will likely see you again before long.
2x speed = wobbly bois
First. I like seeing how steam engines participate a multi-header parade.
Great shots and railway, but that track is starting to look a bit, how can I put this, exciting? (I know money’s tight - and will be giving them my custom next year- brilliant railway)
What May be the highest speed of this train. Really nice.
such eerie sounds at 35:52 onwards
The trains are gorgeous but that track could use some fettling in places before you have an off .
Oh no... i didn't realise the event was so soon, shame I couldn't make the drive down to Kent 😪
Maybe next year
Brilliant video and you've got to love the bug its so cute with its tiny wheels spinning so fast. Hope to replicate it in g gauge one day, just as something to do.
The railway is well worth the trip, even for their regular operating days.
Thank you! "The Bug" is a curious piece of kit, particularly the outside stephensons valve gear - never seen another loco with that arrangement.
I’m wondering if it gets cold enough there for the ground to freeze?
I wish I could have seen that on my trip through Europe in 1978 but we were with a tour group so x that.
Hi, a nice video, but looking at some of the track , would make good back drop for A film in India .
Does anyone know who builds these in 2021, are there still companies that do this size, l have only seen 10 and a quarter online.
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Have they ever tried to play a tune with all the different notes of the whistles?
What are these types of locomotives called considering that they aren’t full sized trains really?
Wow... amazing
Can I use one clip from this video in my train compilation video credit to you in video will be given
Jak to zapierdziela :D
Lol the thumbnail made me think they were standard ones lol
When your model train layout isn't enough.
The politest sounding steam locos, but they're not afraid to drive 'em like they stole 'em! What speeds do they get up to?
It's a wonderful railway, and much worth visiting! Up to 25mph, though restricted in some sections.
@@TheSouthernerYTChannel Ok, looks faster.
얘들은 진짜 천재적이다. 이걸 한국도 도입해야 한다. 제주도 같이 철도가 없는 곳에 안성맞춤이다.
Those rails look like they could use some work.
Sayang sekali rel keretanya banyak bergelombang jadinya kereta api bergoyang. Apakah tidak ada perbaikan pada jalur relnya.
Natural seleksinya memang kayak gini
That uneven track really does look more than scary--actually dangerous. Regardless of any assurances, it simply looks bad, it doesn’t do anything for the reputation of RHDR, detracting from the quality of everything else.
I would tell anyone, don't travel on that railway, the track is dangerous.
I wouldn't!
Why so paranoid anyway? Its always have been like that in the first place
Very surprised about all the undulations in the track, Felt some of those on a recent visit, but had not appreciated that they were as bad as they were as shown on this film.
Track looks plenty rough in places
That track is beginning to look a bit shaky. The speeds they do over it could cause an 'incident'
You'd be surprised what trains can go over, there are cane railways with a much wider loading gauge that operate trains up to 35kph over track conditions worse than what was displayed in this video, some areas are held up by dirt!
RHDR is effectively standard gauge scaled down. The biggest fear would be debris on the line
@@kylegleeson8638 Cane railways don't carry paying passengers . R H D R is not standard gauge scaled down for your information, as the rolling stock size and the gauge of 15" puts it as narrow gauge for it's size. This causes it to be a bit top-heavy for a start. There have been incidents of R H D R stock overturning, but my comment about the track still stands.
I thought these are Toy Trains 🤣
Why are those trains so small were they built for any specific purpose
The short version, is two very rich racing drivers shared an enthusiasm to operate their own commercial 15" gauge railway.

TheSoutherner thanks and greetings from Hong Kong expat I grew up near to the bluebell railway west hoathly and miss the whistle thanks a gain oh had a girlfriend in a place called five marks I think so one go bye she could nt believe I was interested
Welcome!
Four Marks? Near the Watercress Line
TheSoutherner yes long time ago : hey thank you
No worries
How long is that Tracks?
The line runs for 13 & 1/2 miles
Hi southerner
Hi there
How are you
Extrem wobbeling Tracks 😨😨 a derailing iss possibel 🤔🤔
Seen better tracks on those crazy Chinese Coal pit trains, elsewhere on YT! 😆
what is this, kiddie trains
Certainly not - although the kids probably love it as well. It's 13½ miles long, has six stations and much of it is double track. When the trains are doing 20 mph it's the equivalent of a main line train doing 60! I've put the first instalment of my video footage on UA-cam if you'd like to take a look.
Quite the opposite. The RH&DR arguably has more history to its name than a lot of standard gauge heritage lines. I'd recommend reading this as a starting point: www.rhdr.org.uk/history-and-heritage/
Any asylum seekers landing at Dungeness that weekend must have thought "my god it's a small world"
