For me the rule is that there's no one smart enough to _never_ get scammed. No reason for embarrassment. I have only just started shooting film again and tbh mostly shooting out existing stock. To me it now feels like the entire industry around it is aiming at people who literally don't care what they spend - a very tiny proportion of people. Low volumes, high profits. I hope that someone is able to rectify this in the future by producing their own film at prices that allow essentially anyone to shoot a roll of film a week without it hurting their budget.

I completely agree with you on the marketing/sale by countless companies of re-packaged Kodak cine film with the remjet removed.. it makes me think of the frequent Portlandia sketch “put a bird on it”. I hope you get your money back on the bogus Bronica situation man.

Congrats to 5k and thanks for your videos! I only started shooting film a month ago, but i can already feel the resentment in the industry. We want to make film viable again and ask for new stuff all the time. But then products fail to match expectations or are sold to rip-off prices. Maybe it's just part of the inflational period we're going through but i hope we can collectively not give up on it because it's quite amazing :)

Your fine. The seller doesn’t actually get the money until ebay sees the shipment arrive (unless your a power seller) so whoever you bought it from never got the money if they didn’t send you a tracking number and eBay didn’t see the movement on the package. They will refund you quickly. That happened to me once and I called and they instantly returned my money. At either rate your transaction is protected 😀

Bad hot take: I see a lot of film photos on social media that is basically "look at my Kodak movie film I shot on my Canon AE-1." And they share average to below average photos and people go wild over it. I love film but I am also alive and notice things. There's certain trends that we can't escape.

I'm a little confused as to the critique here, I didn't feel like it was too much of a hot take but if you have some more feedback please let me know!

@@RompingBronco maybe hot take was a bad...take on it. My comment was a rushed and poorly formatted commentary of what I see a lot of in film communities online. Your comments about companies selling a lifestyle are correct and repacked movie film and Canon AE-1 is a big part of that lifestyle. They're both great, I just noticed they're in common use and maybe a bit "played out" for lack of a better phrase.

Ebay almost always gives your money back if there isn't any proof the item is shipped or has delivered. You should be good 👍

I buy quite a few cameras from e-bay to re-sell.i live in France and use e-bay france.
i got scammed early in the year on a purchase of a point and shoot nikon camera.
the seller kept on delaying the delivery date of the item till in the end it was too late for
any action on e-bays part.fortunatley it was only 20 euros and not worth making a big
deal about.i would certainly keep chasing e- bay about your purchase. good luck

Great video, hate to hear that you got scammed by that seller on ebay. But as someone from Illinois, I hate it when people pronounce the 's' at the end. It just grates against my ears lmfao.
Also, I do agree with the whole repackaged film deal. I'm just starting out with film myself, but its really sad to see a lack of actual variety. The main boons to repacked film is increased availability in different countries (for example, kodak prices are crazy in Japan, so more film produced or repacked in east Asia is great for that area), and competitive pricing. If it doesn’t check off either of those boxes, than it doesn’t have a good reason to exist. Maybe all this repacked film will prevent the film shortages and backordering issues I've heard about from the past?
Anyway, that's why I'm excited about companies like Harmon/Ilford, Lomography, and Film Photography Project keeping the spirit of film photography alive in my eyes. I definitely wanna shoot their more experimental stocks after I get my first few rolls processed. Ran some Fujifilm 400 through my cameras to test them out, hoping they turn out ok

i just had to go thru ebay to get a refund from a seller that sent me a junk camera. it was sold as untested but i could see it had been tampered with - a loose screw fell out of the film compartment. the seller wanted to give me a partial refund and let me keep his junk. ebay came through for me and gave me a full refund. i dont have to return the camera - its going in the trash can where it belongs. ebay almost always favors the buyer. good luck alex,

Speak truth to power Alex 🤣 pisses me off the amount of crap, rehashed, rerolled, relabeled film that gets advertised as 'new'. Especially when Harman/Ilford have done something as amazing as develop a brand new stock and are actively trying to improve upon it.

Hallo Bronco, I have a suggestion if you are losing interest in film for now, maybe pick up some digi cams and shoot just for fun or any cheapo cameras you love and just run around taking photos until you have the itch for film again then pick up a few rolls and repeat that back and forth for a while and maybe that would help you fall in love with the process of film again so it doesn't feel like a chore for you at this point! Love your content, take care friend!

I hear you with the huge change in film experience factor in processing and scanning and Portra gets ridiculously expensive to shoot. Got a question Shooting Ricoh 500G at the moment and the light meter died, turns out it is the battery contact that broke free in the battery chamber, I still have film in it or it would be apart already, curious if you have ever had one of these appart, it's actually my first Ricoh range finder, I have seen them before but never really gave much notice, My experience with the Canon QL17 GIII has given me some perspective on these cameras with simple designs and fantastic glass, when I came across this 500G it was so mint I had to grab it, I replaced the light seals and shot a roll of Portra 400 I had in the fridge and I love it. The glass is really nice, Shooting a roll of Ektar Right now to really see how sharp this 40mm f2,8 is.

It's "buyer beware" in the film business. However, that's not new and not limited to film. It's the oldest story in the world (well, maybe the second oldest) and part and parcel of capitalism. When there's high demand, there will be companies who will try to meet that demand. When there's low supply and high demand, prices will go up. Over time, quality products and quality vendors will prevail, and shaky providers and products will disappear. Economics 101. Currently, prices border on the painful and that does diminish the fun, I agree.
