  • ***Lyrics***
    Hear that lonesome whippoorwill,
He sounds too blue to fly.
The midnight train is whining low,
I'm so lonesome I could cry.
I've never seen a night so long
    When time goes crawling by.
The moon just went behind the clouds
To hide its face and cry.
Did you ever see a robin weep,
    When leaves begin to die
That means he's lost the will to live,
I'm so lonesome I could cry.
The silence of a falling star
    Lights up a purple sky.
And as I wonder where you are
I'm so lonesome I could cry.

This song was written on the inside of an empty cigarette pack with a stubble of a pencil while Hank was sitting on a stump outside the ramshackle cabin he was living in. He wrote it in less than 10 minutes just from observations he saw and heard while sitting there alone in the middle of the night and dead broke. He went inside the cabin and by candlelight picked up his guitar and strummed it the tune just coming out of the guitar as he sang the words. That is greatness..

The 10 minutes to write a song was actually for Cheating Heart. The man said that if Hank could him a song that day before they closed thinking it would not happen, He would see about getting a recording session set up. 10 minutes it was done and and shortly after it got recorded and taken to the station and played. Became a hit very quickly.

What a talent. Remember when people actually had to sing/write/ their own songs. No like today. True King of Real Country Music. #RIP I think this song is genius. Who hasn't been so lonesome they wanted to cry? If you have never felt that way. You're very blessed.

The lyrics just astound me. "The Moon just went behind the clouds to hide his face and cry" & "Did you ever hear a robin weep when leaves begin to die, that means he's lost the will to live I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" Only pure genius could write something so universal that could affect anyone on this planet. Amazing song.

2021 and listening to this beautiful song. I hear a voice in my mind that's tells me I am going to die. I started thinking about my papaw who has already passed and thought of the music that he loved. Came straight to this. He always liked "tear in my beer" as well.
I am scared to death, because I drink and my Maker says that not right.
