  • While testing the LAOWA 7.5mm during my summer trips this year I experienced some issues with native 46mm filters while taking photos and shooting video. In this video I show you some tests with various filter sizes and explain the pros and cons of using them.
    Fixed ND filters are from Haida, the variable ND filter is from B&W.

    I'm using my 7.5mm f/2.0 with a single step up ring from 46 -> 72 with a CPL and ND400 with no vignetting at all! My filters are Hoya ND400 HMC and Hoya CPL Pro1 Digital. Not very thin. I hope that helps.

    Thanks for the info. Thought about putting smaller Grad ND filter on it . Currently have the Leica 8-18 which is great..but a little bulky. Maybe I have to stick to this one, once you add step up rings the 67mm diameter the Leica Pana isnt that bad either. Maybe gives more flexibility for travel landscape too.

    Thanks for the video. Have you also tried out Step-Up 46-58 + 58-62 (for photos)? I'm thinking of using only a 62mm ND-filter which I can use on the 12-40, too.

    • @TeaJayPhotography
      @TeaJayPhotography  6 років тому

      I do not have 62mm filters, but one filter should be ok. Two filters combined (or a variable ND filter) would cause some more vignetting. One single stup from 46 to 62 should be fine.

    This video is extremely helpful!! I am using the Laowa 9mm and I've just got my 52mm ND variable with a step up ring (since I have another lens with the 52mm diametter) and I got heavy vignetting. I am return it and change to another larger one. Which diametter would you recomend? I see there is a post in which they use the 72mm with the step up ring and it works like a charm.

      I'm glad the video was useful for you! I just got a variable ND Filter from K&F with 67mm diameter and this does not vignette. Although like every variable ND on ultra wide lenses you get some dark areas the darker the filter gets.

    Great video thank you, I take it you like the lens? I’m thinking of getting one. I’ll have to get the step up ring for an nd filter as it’d be for 4K filming. Subbed

    danke für diese tolle Untersuchung, das spart mir eine Menge Zeit. Habe das Laowa jetzt zusammen mit meiner G9 und 12-60 Leica gekauft. Ich plane daher, mit einem 46-62er Stepup-Ring zu arbeiten. Hast du eine Empfehlung eines variable ND-Filters oder würdest du fixe ND vorschlagen? Danke im voraus.!

    • @TeaJayPhotography

      Bei Ultraweitwinkel lieber feste NDs, da es da weniger ungewollte Verläufe gibt (X-Muster). Bei allen anderen Objektiven verwende ich variable NDs. Hatte mal einen teuren B&W, war sehr gut, ist mir aber mal runtergefallen. Jetzt nach Recherche K&F concept (multicoated als 1-5 stops und 3-7 stops) gekauft und auch sehr zufrieden. Am besten in der größten Filtergröße die du brauchst und alles andere mit stepup oder dem neuen Revoring adapter.

    Hey awesome video man, I'm looking to buy 46mm fixed nd filters for video, I shoot one the blackmagic 4k so it's a mft sensor, I should get no vignetting right?

    • @TeaJayPhotography
      @TeaJayPhotography  Рік тому +1

      The BMPCC4k has a bit wider image in video but should probably be ok.

    All my filters are 82mm and I plan to use a 82mm ND filter and a black ProMist 1/4 also 82mm.
    Without the 46-82mm step up ring option because I can't find it, what's the best option?
    A. 46-52mm > 52-82mm
    B. 46-67mm > 67-82mm
    C. 46-72mm > 72-82mm
    D. 46-77mm > 77-82mm
    Thanks!

    • @TeaJayPhotography
      @TeaJayPhotography  3 роки тому +1

      Hello! I would go for the biggest option for the first step up ring to minimize the risk of vignetting.

    • @ricardoxv
      @ricardoxv 3 роки тому

      @@TeaJayPhotography when you say "for the first" are you trying to say that the hypotheses D is the better choice or A?
      I bought the 46-72mm and 72-82mm because 46-72 cost 3€ and 46-77mm cost 20€.
      I hope I made the right choice!

    Have you used a polarising filter combined with a neutral density filter?

    • @TeaJayPhotography
      @TeaJayPhotography  5 років тому +1

      Not yet. But when adding additional filters you would need even larger diameter filter to not get vignetting.

    Guten Abend, kurze Frage an Dich: mit welchem ND Filter für das LAOWA hast du die besten Erfahrungen gemacht? Kann leider kein englisch. Hast du mir evt. ein link zum Produkt? Stehe kurz vor Kaufentscheid, doch wenn noch kein ND Filter brauchbar ist, lass ich lieber die Finger vom Objektiv. Vielen Dank zum voraus!

      Also ich habe feste ND Filter von HAIDA, die sind günstig und optisch sehr gut.
      Mein variabler ND Filter ist von B+W und somit deutlich teurer, aber bei den variablen schneiden günstige oft nicht gut ab.

      What was the best option you found? I'm also looking for the best option to be able to use my 82mm filters.
      46-82mm I can't find anywhere,
      46-77mm costs more than €20
      I found 46-72mm for 3€ and then I will also buy 72-82mm, do you think it won't make a vignette?
      Thanks!
