Another beauty! The more simple you work, the stronger the image❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥🥇🥰👍🏻☠️
3:36 one of the most exquisitely expensive shots I've seen in the watercolor painting section of UA-cam. I envy you sir!
hello :) i discovered your channel a couple of days ago, and i wanted to let you know that you've inspired me to paint more and try different styles... one of the videos I saw was about inspiration and motivation, and i must say your work has inspired me like no other artist had done before. Since I started watercolour last year, I have painted mostly sceneries and trees... and after watching your videos I have stepped out of my "comfort zone" into abstract and spontaneous painting like never before... From other youtube videos I have learned plenty of techniques, from your videos _I'm learning art_ . Thank you thank you thank you for sharing your expertise and being so inspiring! cheers : )
Hi Steve I saw a fantasy face on the left or a large root ball .I like watching your paintings.
Fantastico!! Como todos los que pinta. Felicidades
This painting is just dreamy! I'm amazed you can create something like this from imagination! I just bought some Hahnemule and will be trying soon, too. :)
Hey thanks so much Emily! I appreciate you taking a look. Let me know what you think of the Hahnemule.
Thanks Steve! (And Reese)
You are really the best! Thank you from my heart :)
Another very helpful video and review! Thanks for great content and inspiring work!
Oh yes, you so inspire me, thank you!
Thanks for the sharing your thoughts this is fiest time I am learning from you. I hope wach you another time. Happy new year
How did I miss this episode? SO dang cool! Thx for testing!
Again, love the imagination. I was expecting two red beaded eyes to lokk out from under a root.
Beautiful work👌❤️I am German and I love Hahnemühle paper „Echt Bütten“ it is really nice to paint with!
Hi, I would like to thank you for the excellent testing of the new Hahnemuhles.🍀
Lovely piece. Nice video.
What a cool painting! I love that paper, I only have one sheet left, which I consider an emergency. 🤣
I'm bowled over as we say in UK, you are the best..thankyou so much can't wait for your next tutorial ....
Thanks! We sometimes use that term in the States too. 😄
Thank you so much for the review and the beautiful painting..
Gorgeous. You cleared up Hahnemulle for me; I bought this paper ( in video ) a few months ago, but the reviews I have seen only had the older pads. Thanks!
I have many examples of overworking in my paintings! Very interesting painting. Looks like fun.
Again I want to be like you Steve when I grow up, trouble is I am 75 now and still practicing but hey how one day . Happy New Year Marilyn Handley
😂
Awesome Work.! Nice Paper review Steve.! Thanks for what you do.
As long as you are "tickled pink," all is well with the Universe! 😀 I've heard nothing but good things about "The Collection" made by Hahnemuhle. Beautiful beautiful tree scene - I love the color combo. The neighbor's large tree fell over. Another tree grew straight up out of that exposed root system. Wild but I love the way "Two-Tree" looks and the fact that critters climb into the massive root mass and it shelters them from rainy weather.
I like their watercolor sketchbooks.
Hey Steve. I hope you had a nice holiday. Good to see you up and running. Hugs from NC
Thanks much
Congrats on getting natural immunity! Happy New Year!
Oooh, I love that.
Hi, Steve, and here's wishing you and your family a very healthy and Happy New Year! Great to watch you paint again and thanks for the review of the new Hahnemüle paper.
Lovely painting as usual. I love your style. I think I've been looking at too many abstract fluid art paintings because I cannot unsee the little faces on the left and right areas you masked. Thank you for another great video.
I did, too. To me, the one on the left is a Yorkshire terrier, and the one on the right is a cow. Did you also notice the 1930's girl's face in the wash beneath the right side masked area?
Thank you SO much for this review. Always nice to find an alternative to Arches, despite being my favourite paper to paint the way I do. I have some Hanemüle sketchbooks, but need to check out these blocks and pads now that you gave them thumbs up. Fabulous scary fantasy place. Love your spontaneous paintings.
Thanks for sharing this lovely fruitful work. Greetings and peace from Egypt
Thank you for the review Steve. Beautiful painting!
What a great painting!
Happy New Year Steve! Wish you and your family health, joy and happiness!
Thanks for your channel that allows us to learn from your generosity!
Thank you, Steve, and Happy New Year. I bought a pad of this paper a few months ago and I really like it, too. It seems to stay wet a little longer than Arches which is a quality that is is very helpful. I like the bright clear white and the texture, too, more than Arches.
In a word: marvelous!
Hi Steve , have a watercolor sketch book of Hahnemuhle and I really like the weight and smooth feel . My floral paintings turned out beautifully on the bright white background .
Good review, great painting, the 'root ball' even has a face on it. 🙂
Holy sheep, I didn't know 640gsm paper existed! You could probably do wet-in-wet-in-wet-in wet, and the paper would be all, "Yeah, screw you, I'm just here lying perfectly flat, sucker." :)
I haven't stopped by your channel in a while. Geez Steve, I never fail to just adore watching you paint. You are so humble and so inspiring. Thanks so much for sharing your immense skills and passion for this incredible medium. Blessings and Happy New Year to you and your family. xxx
To you also! 😊
I just have to get that paper, just enjoyed your painting, makes me think of many different things I like to paint, thank you sir and have good year.
Lovely painting!!!
I love your painting here, it looks so super great. Happy 2022 to you and thank you for the videos!!
What a magnificent painting this is! Good to hear that you love the paper - it sure looked as thou it also loved you and your style! Love your work, and find you such an wonderful inspiration. Thank you for your superb demonstrations!
such a joy to watch you paint! I have a small watercolor Hahnemule book I like to paint in, yes it is a joy also!
I really miss your real time painting videos. Nice painting as always
Happy New Year! 🎉
That's a beautiful painting. 😊
I might have to give this line a go. I tried the Harmony block without realizing it's not 100% cotton and didn't care for the texture. I'm done with any and all non-cotton papers! Thanks for the helpful review, Steve!
Happy New Year Steve! What a way to kick off 2022. This is one of my faves and that’s saying a lot.
Love your tips….your painting is lovely…will have to try.this
Gorgeous painting!
Happy 2022 New Year Steve! Wow that’s a great painting. I am glad you have shared how you think this paper works. I have been seeing it for the past few months & wondering how it was different from the other papers they made. Thanks for sharing this with us and keeping us inspired. Your loose tree paintings are always my favorites.
Happy 2022. The painting turned out beautiful. Your color palette is so moody. Looks like great paper.
Happy New Year! Love all your projects!
That might be my fave tree of yours so far - you mentioned seeing a fantasy tree and being inspired, well this reminded me very much of Alan Lee's drawings so I totally understand that inspiration!
Thanks! I Love Alan's work. Yes, similar type trees. Not where this specific inspiration came from but I am frequently inspired by his work.
Superb job. Thanks for your incredible positive energy starting off the new year.
Wonderful video, thanks for sharing your knowledge and talent!
Awesome artwork! I purchased same paper on Amazon before holidays. Looking forward to trying out. Happy New year!!
Hey steve. Cheers for the great content.
You have helped rekindle my love of watercolour.
I bought a pad of the 140# collecion cp and really liked it. I was pleasantly surprised at the quality and durability of the paper. It's time to reorder!!!!
Love your landscapes, they actually motivate me to paint. The final painting here is simple, but you show that with the right contrast, you can really make a painting pop. Your channel is a huge reason, I chose to focus on watercolor paintings. Just ordered your M. Graham set, waiting for it to arrive and some Hahnemühle hot-pressed paper (using your links of course). I look forward to more videos.
Thank you so much 😀
Happy New Year Steve! Thank you for another wonderful tutorial.
Que inveja desses materiais top de linha!!! Suas obras são muito inspiradoras! É satisfatório!
I actually have a block of that paper that I haven’t used yet. Our favorite art supply store here in SF carries Hahnemuele!, yay. Great painting, Steve!
Oh my, please use it! It is lovely, in my opinion. I am a fellow Bay Area artist, but across the bay in Castro Valley.
To me, this is Hahnemuhle`s most similar to Arches paper. This was so enjoyable, thank you!
I found this paper about a month ago and it is by far my favorite! I enjoy the velvety surface of the cold press. I also got the rough surface to test but I prefer the CP.
I want to own a print of that painting. It matches my art studio perfectly.
I know, I know. There's nothing stopping me from doing a painting in those times myself.
I wish Blicks would carry them. I tried the agave block and I didn’t like it but I did like the Cezanne. Your painting is very beautiful! They do carry the Collection pad and block.
I discovered this paper last year. I absolutely adore it. It's my favourite paper. I got a 9x12 pad and a 12x16 block at the time.
As an FYI, the paper is already available in sheet form. I got a few sheets of it last week.
I had a very bad experience with Arches a few years ago, and I swore off it then. I started using Waterford instead. It's my second favourite paper.
Thanks for the heads up. I knew sheets were coming soon.
They've been available here in Canada since last year. In the US, Cheap Joe's has them.
@@montagnu You are right, but weirdly, the blocks and pads are less expensive per square inch (if my math is right). The 300 gsm is $25 a sheet at Cheap Joe's - not so cheap!!
My medium has always been oil however with this new paper I may give it a try again I took water color in college and really liked it but couldn't get away from my oil. I didn't like the paper back then but this is amazing thank you for sharing this!
Amanda me too Also loved the oils I did do some watercoloring but after watching Steve I knew I had to try. The best thing I liked about the oils is to wait and paint over a mistake (this was before they were watersoluble) so then I turned to pastels and always pencils. Then I as I said I watched Steve and was so so inspired. I so love to put the wet wet paint on the paper and see what it is going to do, how the wildness works. It is so wonderful Have fun with the watercolors. Just know you will have to try many watercolor brands before you find the one that is right for you. what is really cool about the M. Graham is they are honey based and in making my Christmas cards I put several thick layers of yellow on them and after they dried they almost looked like a glaze pen. Believe me I was thrilled. Not all honey based watercolors will do this as i tried it with others. Good Luck and have fun.
Thank you so much for the great information!!! And for taking the time to tell so much you definitely know a lot that I didnt know !
I really enjoy watching Steve paint!!! and am just amazed by him!
@@amandamoss9160 Just keep keepin on it won't take a long time to learn if you want. But we only stop learning when our old bodies are cold or do we? Probably yes if we end up in Heaven. Not so much the other way
@@GcOGc01981 So True
I 💓 Hawaii!!!!
I prefer paper that is not glued because every times I tried carefully get apart with palette knife and lot's torn. And I like that I can use to trace from drafting drawing on light table easily.
it's a awesome paper without animal ingredients so fully vegan 😊 specific the hahnemühle collection paper
Thanks for the review - need to try this paper now! But also wanted to ask if you might possibly do a review of Fabriano's soft press paper? Very few reviews of it out there, but I have heard it is good for botanical art (my current main interest).
It's a cold, grey, dreary day here in the northeast. We got some snow a few days ago but not enough appeal to keep the kids outside in this cold. No painting today, maybe tomorrow.
Hi Steve! Thank you for this review and painting. Did you notice that in your left hand masked area you have done a lovely Yorkshire terrier, and on the right, a cow? And just below the right hand masked area, a girl's face circa 1930's?
Here in Europe, The Collection is also available in rough and in full imperial sheets. What needs to be noted is that the sheets *do* *not* have a watermark!!! I took this up with the company, but didn't get a satisfactory answer from the rep here in France. :(
My students and I are experimenting with a variety of different papers during their course, and of the eleven we're trying (four are cellulose, the rest, 100% cotton), I would restock with Lanaquarelle and yes - Hahnemühle Collection! My normal go-to papers are Saunders Waterford NOT, and Fabriano Artistico Rough, but along with others here on UA-cam, we are having issues with the 'new' sizing on the Fabriano, so I'll probably be looking for an alternative for that after 25 years of using it! < *very* sad>
I haven't included Arches, as although I don't remember this from trialling it years ago, the word is that it is smelly and that animals like to lick it, because of the animal sizing. Do you find this is so?
Thanks for doing the review. I was wondering, how does this paper compare to Arches? Every time I try a paper other than Arches I usually end up regretting it so I was wondering what your thoughts were on this one compared to Arches. Sincerely appreciated, and love your channel too!
Would love to know the same! Maybe someone reading this could help. 😊 I already have Arches, Saunders Waterford, Baohong and other cotton papers but since I live in Germany I would love to give Hahnemühle a try. I tried some cellulose papers and Expression in the past and liked their surface structure, but unfortunately they do not work well with masking fluid.
Thanks for the demo! I have been looking for something new! Also, have you done a video on stretching or not stretching your paper, and why? I would like to know your thoughts on the subject. Thanks, and Happy New Year!
Yes I have a video. Keep in mind that it's a preference. Stretching is never required. I rarely stretch my paper but here is my video from several years back if you want to do it. ua-cam.com/video/62YafzknWNQ/v-deo.html
I actually order Hahnemule blocks from Jackson's in the UK, because I wanted large-sized blocks. I purchased an Andalucia block of 230 lb., rough on the front side and cold-pressed on the reverse, sized 16.5" x 22". I bought a Cornwall block, cold-pressed, 210 lb, sized 11.8" x 15.7." I also bought two full sheets of cold-pressed. I think that I really prefer it to Arches for the type of painting I prefer to do.
Cornwall is not „Echt Bütten“ and not 100% cotton! You can not compare it with Arches or Echt Bütten!! You have to buy Echt Bütten paper from Hahnemühle with 100% cotton 😊
@@katinka007 Well, again, I said for the type of painting that I do. I have Arches; I have Hahnemule 100% cotton, so I CAN compare. Please don't make assumptions. Thank you.
It is nice to hear Arches pronounced correctly for once, though.
Thank you Steve for another awesome video. I went to your store and bought that last one. Sorry Folks. Steve what is your opinion of the Winsor Newton 100% Cotton paper? What is your feelings on the Princeton Aqua Elite brushes?
I love both the Winsor Newton Pro paper and the Aqua Elites.
@@mindofwatercolor Thank you Steve for the quick response. I saw you using the elites on one of you videos and ordered some. So so glad I did I really like these brushes. As for the paper you don't mention it often and if you did I proably forgot. Have an awesome day/evening.
I had commented on the painting in Instagram before I saw the video just now. Steve, I love this tree so much, I wish I could own it! Is it for sale, by chance? Please let me know if it is. I would dearly love to have one of your watercolor sketches. Your teaching has meant so much to me. Please let me know. Thanks!
Love this paper. Maybe more than Arches. In germany you could buy 3 textures matt, rau + satieniert (didn't how to say in english, sorry)in 2 weights 300gsm and 640gsm in Blocks, roll/coil 125cmx10m or sheets (56x76cm + 78x106cm ; in packs 5 or 10 sheets )
I'm going to guess that matt=cold press, rau=rough, and satieniert=hot press, unless it's something TOTALLY different!
Happy 2022 !
I hope you and yr family are well I have a couple of question what are your water jar’s called and where did you get them ?
I love your artwork and I’m looking forward to the coming year and yr videos thank you
Thanks. Here is my review on the bowls.
Check Cheap Joe's. I saw all three surfaces and both weights from the Collection just a few moments ago. I'm looking for rough in pads or blocks, if anyone finds it.
Super demo, as always! Great to have ya back 😁
Hey Steve, happy new year, welcome to 2022. Thank you for your video I really wanted to how you use this paper. Have you ever tried handmade watercolour paper?
Thanks! Yes, a few times. The types I've tried were too absorbent for my preferences. Looked cool though.
Happy New Year, Steve! 😀🎉🍀
I love 'The Collection'-papers but I also like the 'Expessions'-line that came out a few years ago. It is not suitable for masking fluid, though, and geared more for expressive painting - as the name suggests. Hahnemühle have had three 100% cotton papers in their line: 'William Turner', 'Cézanne' and 'Leonardo'. And the blocks I have had in the past have all had glue on all sides with a small opening at one of the long sides... The only new feature is the sheet of vellum and the black glue. I guess this is to signal that this paper is very similar to the Arches paper, which it is, wouldn't you say?
They claim they upgraded the cotton and the sizing consistency also. Yes, its pretty close to Arches quality.
@@mindofwatercolor Oh, yes! To me it is a comletely new paper from Hahnemühle. I might have sounded like I didn't think so, when I only meant to point out the two most obvious new features - aside from the paper! 😅😉
I really like this color combination. Did you list the colors somewhere?
I didn't but mentioned them in the video. I'll go back and list them.
Good Grief! This is really outstanding!!!!! I'm really aiming to do something like this! Impossible I tell myself , but I must try!! and try again!
I need to ask, What is the name of this needle point brush and size! I must get one!
Another thing I need to know, Can I fill my fountain pen with water colour paint!! Will it clog or damage my pen in any way!!???
Thank you CC
Thanks. The brushes are listed in the video description. You probably can put watercolor in a fountain pen though I've never tried. I would use a liquid bottled watercolor like Dr. Martin's Hydrus.
Hi Steve, Nice painting good techniques too. I was not over impressed with this paper and I thought it was a bit overpriced. You did not really talk about that, but I found it more costly than Arches. Maybe it is a regional problem? I am in CA and we usually get many items cheaper than other areas being on a coast. I like the Hahnemule Expressions paper pads, but some do not care for the spiral binding. I buy most of my papers in 22x30 sheets Once I decide I like a brand or surface, don't you? Have you ever tried the bigger rolls of watercolor papers? from Arches or Canson 48" or larger? I enjoyed the video and hope your doing well in this new year.
I gravitate towards blocks personally. I use sheets when I need to cut a particular size.
I saw this paper and thought it might be a student grade version of the Hahn papers, thanks for the clarification!
By the way, do you have any videos or experience with Rublev watercolor paints? They’re made from natural pigments and look amazing, but I can’t find a single review of them anywhere on YT. I’m a big proponent of old methods and materials but don’t have the resources to try them myself. If you have any information, I would be grateful to hear about it.
Thanks for all you do for the community!
I do not, sorry! Thanks for watching.
where did you get that little skull? it's so detailed.
Proko. www.proko.com/tool/anatomical-skull/overview
@@mindofwatercolor thanks.
A Hahnemuhle rep told me "The Collection" is actually just a re-brand of the papers that used to be called Cezanne and Leonardo. He was awesome and actually sent me a bunch of samples for free! In my tests, Hahnemuhle and Lanaquarelle have been virtually perfect papers; they have very different feels and I love them both. The Hahnemuhle Bamboo Mixed Media paper is the best mixed media paper I've tried - I certainly love the watercolor paper more, but it's not bad. I'm not a fan of the Agave paper though.
As I said in the video, yes, it is replacing Cezanne and Leonardo, but it’s more than a rebranding. They made a few improvements and changes too. I have a whole fact sheet on it directly from my Hahnemuhle rep.
@@mindofwatercolor Oh, awesome. I didn't see the fact sheet. I sure wish they would put more information on their website!
@@jennw6809 yes, me too.
Left side has a face. Grabs my attention.
Two and a half years later, when I look at Hahnemuhle watercolor blocks, I see “Harmony” and “Expressions.” Do you know what those are compared to what you review here, Steve? If you’ve reviewed them, can you steer me towards the video. Just the date is enough. Thanks.
No review, sorry. Lower grade. Only Expressions is cotton.
Sized only externally (not internally), if I understand correctly?
Nope, it's both internally and externally sized.
You could have left it at the first wash without the tree; like the current abstracts you see so much recently
