    Nice summary. You forgot about the conditional (If I you) and the subjunctive (He asks that she ). Also, the choice of tenses is more about the time, not the action.
    2:07 We use the past simple to talk about the past. We don't need to talk about any action (I was not happy yesterday, I did nothing yesterday), if we do, the action does not need to be finished (I did not finish my homework yesterday).
    2:57 We use the present perfect to talk about a period of time that ends now. We do not need to talk about any action (He has been very happy lately, he has done nothing since yesterday).
    6:20 We use the future simple to talk about the future, whether we talk about an action or not (Tomorrow will be another sunny day)
    7:10 We use the present continuous to talk about what is going on now, but again, not necessarily about any action (You are being rude. Nothing is going on).
    The lines are from "Leaving on a Jet Plane" by John Denver.
    8:21 We use the past continuous to talk about what was going on at a specific moment in the past, but not necessarily about any action (he was being unreasonable this morning)
    11:16 Again we do not have to use the past perfect to talk about any action: before she showed up

    Merry Christmas. I have another question to ask. I often get confused about what to use between " should do" and "should be doing". Like you used in the sentence before (media should be doing). Some teachers say that one should use "should be doing" when talking about the current situation but I think there is something I have not been told. I recently came across a video titled " that's how you should be brushing" by a native dentist. Why did he not use " that's how you should brush"? Hope you help me with my doubt.

    • @InteractiveEng
      @InteractiveEng  2 роки тому

      You're right that "should be doing" would refer to a continuous action in the present. As for the video title, either would work. The continuous emphasizes "right now" while the present simple refers to a "routine." 👍

    Hello teacher, can I propose a few words, which are confusing to me, because they can have seemingly opposite meanings depending on the context:
    1. "contend" - could mean both "compete" and "come to terms with" as well as "assert".
    2. "all but" - can mean both "almost" and "anything except". For example if I hear, "it was all but impossible", I always stumble to figure out the meaning. Was it very hard to do, almost impossible? Was it quite easy, bearable?

    Why 12 tenses, isn't it there are only 2 past and non-past. Maybe you are referring to verb tense ASPECT not just tense.
