  • Dino’s Tinker Shed, S2 Ep50, what is considered high mileage for motorcycles?
In this episode, My DR650 turns 50, 50,000km that is, and to many, that is a lot of miles for a motorcycle. I want to tell you about my thoughts on high milage motorcycles and perhaps give you a new perspective on the value and reliability of a bike with miles cresting the half century mark.
Now this video is not going to be a how to buy a used motorcycle video, if you are looking for that check out this video, • How to inspect a motor... , but it will give you my thoughts on why the simple DR650 is a bike that lasts and lasts and a few of the items to be aware of when purchasing one.

2014 DR650 bought with 7000 miles in 2019 before the pandemic. Bike had FMF Exhaust, Bar Risers and 1/1/4 bars, IMS 4.9 tank, jetted, air box modification, seat concepts seat, and the DR250 tail light modification. It cost $3000 and before the pandemic the owner was getting low ball offers for $2500 on Facebook Market Place. I also got all the original parts and he was crazy with oil changes every 1000 miles but he was only doing 1000 miles a year. Now has almost 27,000 miles. I change the oil every 3000 miles (Rotella T6) and clean and oil both filters. Only thing the bike has needed was a new battery, chain and sprockets and fork seals. I don't baby it and it sees quite a bit of trail use.

Dino, great DR content and you're much like me. I picked up a 95 about 9 yrs ago for $1300 from the original owner that kept it in a heated, carpeted garage and have been tinkering on it ever since. It's at 63k now and runs better than a new one I took out for a test ride at our local dealer. I have done the following, full Bose cycle sound system for those long rides, GSXR muffler, TM40 pumper carb installed from scratch, not a kit, soft side bags and a great rear trunk added that came from an 80s Yamaha SR250 with some custom graphics added here and there. I wish I could upgrade the seat but 95s have limited after market parts available. I did add a Sit and Fly cover thats like a mesh that makes the seat tolerable. My project for this year is a new Barnett clutch. The TM40 and GSXR mods increased the power to the point that the clutch slips a bit above 4500 under load. My goal is to keep this bike for as long as I can continue to ride. If you're ever in the Cambridge area you might run into me. Keep up the great work.

      Thank you again

Nice video Dino! I bought my DR650 new in December 2014 (almost 8 years ago). I used it as my commuter bike and have since clocked up 97,500km! Apart from the rooster start issue, it’s been pretty much trouble free. Regular servicing (every 6,000km) seems to be the key. As the old girl was coming up to the 100k, I bought an Africa Twin to replace her. Once I had the AT, couldn’t bring myself to part from her and have turned her into an adventure bike with 20L fuel tank, TKC80’s, bashplate, Mosko Moto Reckless luggage and other mods. We’ve been on camping trips and I look forward to keeping her well past the 100,000km mark!

In February this year I picked up a 2012 DR with only about 2970 miles on the clock; it ticked over 3k miles while I was riding it home lol. With the miles being so low you'd think I would be in the clear regarding issues, but getting such an old bike with so few miles presents a whole different host of potential concerns. My initial concern was checking anything rubber for cracking from lack of movement. The original tires that were still on it were getting a bit dry, but everything else seemed okay. Throughout the decade of almost constant sitting, however, I believe the pulse coil had built up some corrosion or something and I had it fail on me about 1500 miles into a week-long trip. I'm just glad it didn't happen even a day sooner when I was in the Colorado mountains doing some relatively hardcore trail riding by my standards. Instead it happened "only" 500 or so miles away from home on my way back to Houston. After replacing that coil though, everything else has been fine so far. But yeah, just interesting that my position is such a polar opposite from what most DR riders are concerned with.

They are not available here in Australia anymore and the last ones were sold for $11, 890 AUD. The positive about buying pre-owned is they usually have additional accesories already on the them which is some benefit. I have heard comments about DR's doing 100, 000 klms with regular oil changes and a good maintenace schedule.

Your thought processes are sound regarding the DR. Some years ago I wanted a low milage DR but the low km bikes were near new price. A friend and I approached a dealer and said we will have one each and got a good deal. I kitted mine out for a long outback and desert runs in Aus -safari tank, power outlets, tool tube, higher bars etc. The DR is not my main motorcycle but I enjoy the simplicity and importantly it is light so I can pick it up if I drop it in the sand. I have shipped the DR to New Zealand and travelled around the South Island for a month or so. Perfect bike for there. Mine has half the milage of yours. I service /modify mine myself and as I do not want to be held up in some remote location I have modified a few things - neutral switch bolts wired (JIS bolts and one was working loose), oil seal retainer for gear shifter, case protector near front sprocket, power outlets, screen, bark busters to save levers in a drop, additional fuel filters. I use a handlebar mounted GPS and have fitted a cycle computer for accurate speed/distance tracking. Apologies for being long winded.

      @DinosTinkerShed  Рік тому

No apologized needed Mal, I think you and I have the same type of thought process. I still need to add some protection to mine and adjust the gearing a bit but overall, it is a great, simple, bike that most people can repair and modify themselves.
I like the cycle computer idea; I may have to borrow that idea.

@@wendygerrish4964 I have not put a tachometer on the bike but I agree it is an important instruments. I try not to rev my DR too much and tend to go by sound. I did not want to cut into anything other than the lighting circuit. Reason - the DR is simple and when starting the lights stay on. For cold mornings I wanted all the battery power going to the starter motor so I have a switch that I can turn the headlight off and turn it back on when the bike starts.(You could carry a jump starter)

I bought a 2018 DR650 in June with 2,400 miles on it and most the mods I was planning on doing for $5400. I had a deposit for a new one from the dealer that would have cost over $8k out the door. I figured with the savings I could fix just about anything that could go wrong. I now have almost 8k miles on it and have grown to trust and love it. It took me a little while to trust it since I purchased used with 2 previous owners and didn't totally know the history.
I do agree about a higher mileage ridden and taken care of motorcycle over a low mileage one that's just been sitting. Usually they are ridden by someone that takes care of it for no other reason then they need to rely on it. The low mileage garage queens are probably just a toy and after thought to the owner.
I prefer to buy slightly used take care of motorcycles instead of new because of all the extra fees tacked onto the price tag. There is something to be said for owning a bike from mile 1 though.

Nothing wrong with buying a new DR but know you will pour money into it, they are built to modify…
I bought a new DR in ‘14 for $7k cad out the door and in the next year spent easily $4-5k cad on it.
In ‘18 it sold for $5500, all those accessories added zero to the sale price.
By ‘22 he got bored with it (bought a boat) after he put a few grand in it which he never got back.
I picked it up with the inflated costs today at $6k cad and didn’t pay a dime for the extras.
A new one today runs right around $10k cad out the door, then add all the items you know you are going to buy…
That’s serious savings for the used bike option, it’s less than half for something that will look and work just as good as the new.
Plus it will free up cash to continue the build, lol…
Great video Dino, keep them coming.👍

We dont have too many of them here because of all the emission etc regulations that came along in about 2000 in the EU, so getting a newer one locally wouldn´t even be possible, so I consider my self lucky for this find as it was the bike I really wanted.

When I got the head and cylinder off and looked down in the crank case, there sat a broken off piece of piston wristpin boss! Substantial price of metal! I have a 2014 with 22,000kms that I bought new. l only buy new bikes mostly for peace of mind knowing what's been done to the bike and the price difference usually seems fairly minor to me over buying used. I also like to keep my stuff for a long time and do my own maintenance so seems to make sense to me financially over the long term if I keep it around. Still really enjoying the bike and runs perfectly.

      @DinosTinkerShed  Рік тому +1

That's a totally logical path especially if you keep your bikes for the long haul. Both routes have there merits and each rider has to make the choice of new vs used based on their own needs.

This was posted on a forum, and I can't guarantee its truthfullness. I know taxi use can extend a normal vehicle's lifespan way beyond normal use due to the engine very seldom starting cold.
"The bonus of the DR being a simple bare bones bike is it makes it a blank canvas to build the bike you want, like the old Brit bikes from back in the day, multi purpose. I bought my first DR back in 1998 to use as a courier bike after owning a KLR 650 and KLX 650, I sadly sold the DR after 2 years and 115,000 Klm’s of trouble free riding, unlike the Kawasaki’s, nothing but issues. Then in 2005 returned to courier work and bought another DR, 474,000 Klm’s and 9 years of a few problems, but not super expensive issues, then 2014 DR number 3, 7 years and 296,000 Klm’s with no issues, am I happy ? Hell yes. I wanted a bike that would start every morning, last a day in stop start traffic, sit on highway speeds, have low overheads, then on the weekend take me to the backroads, mission complete. And by the way 2021 is the last year of the DR here in Australia due to no ABS, the fun police spoil another fun pastime. I look at it this way, a DR 650 will go everywhere a 3 times more expensive BMW GSA 1250 will go, apart from a dealership to be serviced, but the GSA 1250 will not go where the DR can go, with similar skilled riders, makes the DR 650 the best bike on the market . "

I think I read this as well, really shows the durability of the DR if it's true. I like to think it is, thanks for sharing.

A motorcycle engine (Japanese) can last as long as any car. The reason you don’t see that often is because most people barely log any miles on bikes. I put 10k on my bike per year and less that 2 k on car. Long haul Paul put 180 k miles on a Yamaha tenere700. No valve adjusting just changed oil plugs and filters.

Thank you for the feedback, I totally agree. My hopes for this video was to encourage others n9t to shy away from higher mileage motorcycles and your comments help to reinforce that thought. Thank you again.

50400 miles on my DR650 (81110km} , bike still runs strong, also has good leak down compression test 80/70, my bike was bought new in 2017 , I wanted to buy used, but, my new/old decision is it has to be 1/2 new purchase price. Ask the owner "when was the last time you greased the suspension linkage" and if you get the deer in the headlights look...move on, or offer a much lower price, ESPECIALLY if they did the jetting/airbox mod.

Hey dino, thank you so much for all of your content, i bought a 2019 dr650se with 3000 kilometers about a month ago, the previous owner said he rode the bike every now and then to keep the systems going but 3000 kilometers in 4 years is not alot. (He was scared of riding this why he sold it with such low milage) should i still be worried about inner parts after the bike has been sitting? Or would i have less to worry about on a bike that new?
I know he did all the break in services on time, but i think almost all the milage he did was during his first year of ownership, then the bikr sadly mostly sat. Sorry for the long question and thank you for everything, be safe and have fun!

10680 km. Bought the bike august 13th 2021. Love the thing. Leaking a little oil from where the clutch pulls on the engine casing. Probably from a fall. Otherwise no issue.

Hi Dino, I bought my Dr new, and it has 5k miles. The only issue is gear whine a little in every gear but seems mostly in 3rd, the dr has straight cut gears, so some whine is to be expected . I just hope it doesn't blow up on me!🤞

I do not buy buy bikes between 30k to 50k miles, as the main parts fail between those miles (starter motor, electrics, suspensions etc etc), a bike with over 50k means good maintenance got them to survive that long so is been well looked after, same thing for cars, between 50k and 90k miles is where is very dangerous to buy a used car, obv befor buy a used vehicle i plan how much im going to spend on it, in my experience I Always save money when i buy a plus 60k miles bike/100k miles car not only on the bike purchase itself but on the repairs too.
