@@TheCharlieSmithChannel dude you fit in so well. It is hard for me still to believe that it was only 4 months ago when you reacted to your first DCI show and now you are able to tell me that 2014 seems a lot like 2024 in that all of the finalists shows are great 😁👍
BD has never been my favorite but this show is undeniably legendary. That first minute and a half of brass is just god-tier stuff. They absolutely deserved the ever but I think it's fair to point out that corps aren't just scored against a set scale, but are also ranked against each other every time they compete. A score that high speaks not only to the quality of the Blue Devils performance but also speaks to how highly scored their competition was as well. Having just watched your reaction to the Bluecoats Tilt from that year I think you can see what I mean.
Tilt was a terrific show, and to think the Blue Devils scored 2.475 higher than the second place Bluecoats says a lot about just how dominate the Blue Devils were in 2014. There had not been a margin of victory that large since the 1970's. 2014 was a great year for drum corps. Congratulations to the Bluecoats also for totally dominating the entire year by going undefeated in 2024 and getting their 2nd DCI Title. I believe they will be racking up many titles over the next few years!
Surprised no one's mentioned Brandon Olander -- one of the snares. He was only 16 here...VERY young for a drum battery in a top corps. He could hang with the snare line on show music as 12 years of age....un-freaking-believable. He ended up with three championships, and was center snare (section leader) for his last 2 seasons. Had he not taken 2017 off for school, he'd be part of the very exclusive 4-ring club.
@@cerburus4215 Anyone who marched BD 76-82, Cadets 83-90, or Cavies 2000-06. After that, few people would stay with a corps long enough to get 4 rings, Brandon being one exception I'm aware of. The drum part at 11:25, that sound that they got was achieved by them facing the other way and then facing back. Since the mics are in front because that's what the audience hears when they face the other way the sound is travelling in the other direction.

Two great Fellini films to watch that are similar to this show are "La Strada" and "I Vitelloni." Devils used a good amount of the music from La Strada in this show, particularly the world famous trumpet solo. The main character in La Strada plays this theme on a trumpet. It's an iconic score and film because of this trumpet solo. Kudos to the designers who thought to make a show based on this trumpet solo.

I am personally going to remember September 27 as the Charlie Smith channel day 😂😂😂. I have already watched both of your reactions so I’m going to try to keep my comments separate. I think you described this Blue Devils show perfectly. The blue Devils have had many great years but this was special as their horn line was ridiculously good their percussion scored a perfect score and was just amazing and they also had a perfect score in general effect which is not hard to believe considering that it affected me so much this Cavalier who lives in Indianapolis in the Midwest where I say this with love, we all love to hate the blue devils but there was no way to hate anything about this 2014 production. There were so many different moods to this production yet they all fit together in the most perfect way. The show was incredible in person and it definitely deserves the 99.65 that it received and I’ve learned over the years to love the show even more because I wanted to Segway into the next video by telling you that I was so pissed on finals night at Lucas Oil Stadium, wearing my bright orange shirt that said “Orange is the new Bloo”. of course the brilliant Merch tactic and that’s why you see so much orange in the crowd as you know everyone screams Bloo when they love the blue coats and they crossed that with the very popular able show orange is the new black came up with that great bright orange T-shirt since there was so much orange on the field during the show. Yes I wanted the blue coats to win and I couldn’t understand at first how they did not as you can tell they were a huge crowd favorite. I just looked at it as yet another year the blue Devils won the championship over the corp that the majority of drum corp fans wanted to win. I will end this comment by saying I get it now and I believe the correct placements we’re given and your comment was perfect when you said this blue coat show tilt would have won in any other year and I think with the exception of the Cavaliers championship years I would agree. Thank you again and I can’t wait to see my other PayPal request which is another first place show the 1991 Star of Indiana (I am going to rock your world with a huge coincidence in my reaction to the blue coats)
I love this show as-well. Blue Devils correctly analyzed their trumpet section and said, “F*CK YES” and let them pop tf off. While I’d love to have seen bluecoats or crown win this year, we just gotta respect this beast of a show and a just-as-big beast of a high brass section (the lower brass were great too, not undermining them)
You know the mellophones put their horns down and played trumpet during the opening fanfare!! Amazing how clean it was!! If anyone reading this was a BD mellophone player congratulations on a job well done .... Yes, the brass sound in beginning and throughout the show was absolutely amazing .... After the fanfare the low brass comes in and that send chills down my spine!! Also, that trill by all the brass players while running all I can say is CLEAN!!! Color Guard did a phenomenal job from through rifles, playing tambourine and I can tell you I don't remember seeing any issues. The only unclean part in the show was the announcer starting the introduction about 5 seconds late ... Drumline were basically carbon copies of each other ...
Those cadences in the opening were 🤯!!! 3 minutes in and I understand why this was the highest scored show. The look on your face is priceless! The solo at 6:40 and the old movie nostalgia. 🤩 They weren't playing! They went there to win! Their sound is out of this world! New favorite show! BRB...going to watch La Dolce Vita now! CHARLIE YES!!! Go back to when you pointed out the high flying rifles, and notice that the last one thrown is caught ON THE DOWNBEAT. BD was on something else this year.
Nobody has that same scintillating, zippy high brass sound. BD 2014 and 2024 are by far some of my favorite brass lines & brass books. Just stunning! Also on the point you made around 21:20 about listening to a show multiple times - I think having a first reaction video and maybe at a later date doing a re-watch video after doing some research would be great content!
at 12:15 you mentioned the sound becoming “much more staccato”; they are all playing around the same amount of clean the whole time, but rotating towards the field mics will make the sound cut more. there are scoops on the bottoms of the snare drums to project more sound directly forward
Man, it would've been cool to see your reaction to their score being announced at the Awards Ceremony. The full 2014 Retreat is on UA-cam, and the crowds reaction, and the corps reaction to their record breaking score always sends chills down my spine. 99.65 out of 100. Absolutely mental achievement. It's so awesome to see you pick up on the sheer level of this performance. I can't wait to see your Star Of Indiana reaction(s)!
One of the very greatest musical programs in drumcorps history. And my favorite show to date, in about three decades. The music performance is beyond epic. No words. Imo.
I'll add on to the astonishment of the battery that year. Prior to the Blue Devils taking the field finals night, they aired a CBS news story on a member of their snare line, Brandon, who was the youngest member to march BD snares at 16 (on average, BD usually doesn't take anybody younger than 19). You can find the news story on it by looking up "CBS Blue Devils" if you want the extra context to Blue Devils snare line from 2014-2019.
Charlie, Thank you so much for your content!! I genuinely get so excited whenever you post a new video! I marched Colorguard at The Academy Drum Corps 2016-2018 and I Aged out with The Santa Clara Vanguard in 2019. You’re incredible, much love to you friend ❤️
Perhaps. But there are some equals. Not many though. What is extraordinary is the music program and the performance of it. Ingenious musical arrangements and choices.
This show captures this sense of inner conflict through its complex musical arrangements and emotionally charged performances, where performers seem to wrestle with abstract feelings of confusion, joy, sorrow, and discovery and showcases the dreamlike, nostalgic, existential, and fantasy style of Fellini.
I forgot just how good this show was. Hard not to have tears at the end. Love this show. Glad to see it again! Having marched drum corps myself I love seeing reactions from people who haven’t seen drum corps before. One thing I do know almost 100 percent they become hooked. Great for the activity.
I remember printing that film at the end of the show. My former job was a 3rd party fabric sublimation company for FJM. They design all of the uniforms for DCI.
I went to a drum and bugle show with Blue Devils and Phantom Regiment in Texas when I was in High School in the late 80’s. I’ve been hooked ever since! The trumpets in this video are outstanding!!!!
Charlie, I'd love to see you start focusing on the hornline music more. The 4 elements are: 1. trumpet/soprano 2. mellophone/french horn 3. baritone/euphonium 4. tuba/contrabass. Each section usually has 2 or three different musical lines. It is the mellophone that people usually find the most unique sound unlike any other musical group. For horn impacts only, please watch Carolina Crown Brass Impacts (2009-1019). Being "in the arc" or "in the circle" is a goosebump experience.
To answer your question at 12:30. They literally just did a 360 so the sound traveled a bit. They did however play at lower heights with a lighter touch to the sticks so it helped them achieve it!
I marched Madison Scouts that year and I will never forget watching this performance from the side 2 backfield tunnel while waiting to go on retreat. Absolutely unreal.
You should watch the documentary that BD did about this show. It follows their journey from the beginning of the season to the end of the season. It explains so much about what the show is and what it meant to corps at that time.
I can't even imagine. Right at the 50 about halfway up. I'm so sorry I missed it in Indy. I would have not been able to speak for at least 30 minutes after.
It’s rare that a horn line outshines the drum line in this activity. I mean…they call it Drum Corps for a reason! What was it? 40 trumpets?…yes 40! Double and triple tonguing so squeaky clean in the intro. That has never been attempted before OR SINCE, and probably never will be. There is so much going on in this thing, you could watch it 100 times and see something new every…single…time! This show will be discussed, debated and loved for decades to come. To those who actually performed it? Damn. I mean, what else can you say. Words don’t often describe art very well, and this is a great example of speechlessness.
The percussion judge in this was my high school band director freshman and sophomore years way back in the 80s. He's probably most famous in DCI for having saved a dropped snare drum from a Carolina Crown drummer in finals 2014. ua-cam.com/video/TDT1wYmHFo8/v-deo.html and close up PoV ua-cam.com/video/TDT1wYmHFo8/v-deo.html
Alright, looks like we're gonna have to get you to react to drum line lot videos haha It's a whole different experience to say the least. BD deserved the win. I started loving T/LT and have been loving bluecoats ever since. But blue devils never fail to amaze😭 Beautiful reactions we got today 🗣️🗣️
Absolutely loved this! Thanks again Charlie! And anyone know if someone's requested Cavaliers 2001? The show that this one overtook as far as highest score ever, and still such a beautiful, perfectly executed show!
I was in high school when this show was performed. It was not my favorite show in rotation that year, however, even I would be a fool not to bring up the 99.65 score that this show achieved. Which is still, 10 years later, the HIGHEST scoring show in history.
I don't know if you know this already or not but, a cool thing about the Blue Devils is that one of their music coordinators used to be a jazz conductor I think and, every year they have a least one song that is a jazz piece. Just a really cool fact I learned recently. Also I really think you would like the Bluecoats 22 show it definitely should have won but it was an amazing show to say the least
Saw this live finals night. picked up late tickets and had to sit in the 300 level. The clarity up high was nuts. Every other corp that day was "muddy" at those seats (lots of echo). Not the devils though. Everyone member was locked in that night.
Now you can see why Tilt by Bluecoats got the silver. So much meat in this show ... I am not downplaying Bluecoats Tilt that show was a gamechanger but this is one is my favorite shows of all time. BD2014, SCV2018 and yes, the Bluecoats 2014 shows are my favorite of all time ... The thing about DCI shows is they are all so goooooood !!! Very difficult to pick favorites ... These kids are amazing ... Thank You Charlie for reviewing my favorite show of all time ...
I just don't get how anyone could say Bloo deserved to win that year. And weren't the Cadets expected to win 2nd until a finals jump by Bloo anyway. I think people should better accept when a true great show wins first.
I didn’t know much at all about Fellini (and still don’t, really), and I’d wager the average drum corps attendee didn’t either. But that show was widely beloved all season long. It appealed to wide swaths of people on a visceral level. It speaks to the excellence of the show’s design.
I greatly appreciate the spotlight you shine on the Tabernacle Choir and the Drum Corps performances. As a retired band and choir director of a 37 year career, these are dear to my heart. Thank you for introducing others to these wonderful performances. Just one comment: I find that the music playing below your talking segments takes away from the music you have just shared. They just don't work in such a juxtaposition. Just a thought. Keep doing your great work.
I do not know if you have a reaction to the Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps DCI winning 1988 with Malagueña - outstanding performance. Also, from 2013 in the Scout's DCI Program of Corps of Brothers - they came in 9th place but the show was outstanding and they sing their theme song during the presentation.
First, let me say you are my favorite DCI reactor coming from a former corps member. Blue Devils absolutely deserved to be the highest score of all time; but, the scoring works is point spreads. How much better was corps A to Corps B. So when you get scores this high, 2nd thru 12th put up great scores too. 12th kind of sets the base score for the night
Hello there, love seeing these videos and can't wait to see more. I have a request for a show one of which I was a part in. The show is 2019 Pacific Crest called Everglow. If you'd like to watch it I have a clip for you to share if you want to DM me. Again love the videos and look forward to see more.
ua-cam.com/video/y3x38EQSq-I/v-deo.htmlsi=k0siUTK4U7wwgBV1 I don't care for the movie advertisement aspect of the video but these vocalists are father and son in real life which is inspiring. The story of the song is also moving. A young man's prayer and God's answer to his prayer.
This is a great show. Low key im a BD hater bc of all of the great shows that have lost 1st to them… However, can’t deny their performances are always 🤌
This is truly a great show, but the score is inflated. The judges were boxed in by previous shows of the evening. Yes, they deserved 1st, but not that score. There are plenty of items that would definitely provide a lower score. They have done some show that deserved it, but not with this outing. ❤

I went to a drum and bugle show with Blue Devils and Phantom Regiment in Texas when I was in High School in the late 80’s. I’ve been hooked ever since! The trumpets in this video are outstanding!!!!
Another great reaction, i am glad i am not the only one to get emotional after watching a show or great music. Cheers
I'm telling you, that show in person was jaw dropping.
It was. And jaw dropping is still an understatement
I can't even imagine. Right at the 50 about halfway up. I'm so sorry I missed it in Indy. I would have not been able to speak for at least 30 minutes after.
I wish I was there it's an amazing show
“I think they’re made out of wood, right?”
Yes. Like witches.
So they weigh the same as a duck then.
@@suncoastleif King Arthur speaks the truth.
so far the blue devils have made your top 2 favorite shows
Love this reaction! Smiled the whole time. Have a excellent day.☮️❤️ from Colorado.
GOAT dci reactor
YOU KNOW THE DRILL 💀
YASSSSSS
It’s rare that a horn line outshines the drum line in this activity. I mean…they call it Drum Corps for a reason! What was it? 40 trumpets?…yes 40! Double and triple tonguing so squeaky clean in the intro. That has never been attempted before OR SINCE, and probably never will be. There is so much going on in this thing, you could watch it 100 times and see something new every…single…time! This show will be discussed, debated and loved for decades to come. To those who actually performed it? Damn. I mean, what else can you say. Words don’t often describe art very well, and this is a great example of speechlessness.
You should watch bluecoats 2016!!
I've already got a paypal request for him to watch it, so it should happen, eventually.
I am so happy you finally saw this!!
I was just watching this show and thought of you uploading your reaction😭😭😭I kid you not.
Sheeeesh. This show is ridiculously good. One of my favorites of all time
More on your last thought, going back to some of your first reactions and doing them again would be cool to see.
We gotta get him to watch Harmonic Journey! Phantom Regiment 2003!!!!
Or 2021, they’re both solid but the video quality is better in the latter one.
@@suncoastleif2021 may have better video quality but it’s not the OG 🖤
@@suncoastleifin a perfect world, he’ll watch both haha
100% recommend watching Phantom Regiment 2010
Alright, looks like we're gonna have to get you to react to drum line lot videos haha
It's a whole different experience to say the least. BD deserved the win. I started loving T/LT and have been loving bluecoats ever since. But blue devils never fail to amaze😭
Beautiful reactions we got today 🗣️🗣️
I love to see him do some Cadets show from the 90's because "YOU KNOW THE DRILL".
yeah I'm surprised nobody has recommended Cadets yet
I was just about to say that. He should do 2011, 2000, or 1983
@@Emily-sn5xr yeah and after he watches some Cadets shows get into 2005
Now we need to get him on even more phantom regiment shows, 2003, 2010, and 2011!
“Blue Devils, you should be so utterly proud of yourselves”
Don’t worry. They are!
THIS IS THE ONE!!!!
Imagine how good you have to be to get a featured solo.. wow!
Lmao. We’ve turned Charlie into a hardcore DCI fan. 🤘
at around 6:25 u can see that instead of a normal mic there using like a filming microphone from the props
If that brass doesn't make your eyes water... nothing will! MAN!! 😆
this show had the purest tone ever
I don't know if you know this already or not but, a cool thing about the Blue Devils is that one of their music coordinators used to be a jazz conductor I think and, every year they have a least one song that is a jazz piece. Just a really cool fact I learned recently. Also I really think you would like the Bluecoats 22 show it definitely should have won but it was an amazing show to say the least
Yes!!! Finally!!!
Now we need Bluecoats 2016 - Downside Up, and Blue Devils 2017 - Metamorph
Some of The music reminds me of the silent film era.
i’ve never thought of that your so right
MADISON SCOUTS, 1995. 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
THE CAVALIERS, 1995. 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Blue devils 2017 !!!
Frrrr tilt and Felliniesque best day everrrr
I do not know if you have a reaction to the Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps DCI winning 1988 with Malagueña - outstanding performance. Also, from 2013 in the Scout's DCI Program of Corps of Brothers - they came in 9th place but the show was outstanding and they sing their theme song during the presentation.
Why does it make us all cry 😭😭😭
Thanks for the reaction, Charlie
Thanks to the request donors 🩵🩵
Now for blue devils 2017
First, let me say you are my favorite DCI reactor coming from a former corps member. Blue Devils absolutely deserved to be the highest score of all time; but, the scoring works is point spreads. How much better was corps A to Corps B. So when you get scores this high, 2nd thru 12th put up great scores too. 12th kind of sets the base score for the night
Hey Charlie! Just joined the Patreon, how do we submit show requests? I’m itching to see you react to my home corps, the Blue Knights 🙏
BACK 2 BACK
You should watch Rockstar by Carolina Crown
You should watch WGI percussion shows
can we get a bluestars 2024 blue stars show react?
Yes please!!
what’s the song in the introduction?
Matt Goodman 'wait'
Hello there, love seeing these videos and can't wait to see more. I have a request for a show one of which I was a part in. The show is 2019 Pacific Crest called Everglow. If you'd like to watch it I have a clip for you to share if you want to DM me. Again love the videos and look forward to see more.

I don't care for the movie advertisement aspect of the video but these vocalists are father and son in real life which is inspiring. The story of the song is also moving. A young man's prayer and God's answer to his prayer.
This is a great show. Low key im a BD hater bc of all of the great shows that have lost 1st to them…
However, can’t deny their performances are always 🤌
This is truly a great show, but the score is inflated. The judges were boxed in by previous shows of the evening. Yes, they deserved 1st, but not that score. There are plenty of items that would definitely provide a lower score. They have done some show that deserved it, but not with this outing. ❤
2004 not 2014!!!
This show wasn't 2004
this show is just sooooooooo boring to me... Like its an absolutely incredible performance and design, but it just bores me for some reason

If you use "ctrl + f" and search "Jesu" in the find text box, you will find A LIST of references to this show. I wouldn't hesitate to say that the famed "jesuspectre9883" is probably the most clever commenter online regarding dci shows. If you see his comments, usually it's full of replies telling them to go outside, but his analysis is always top notch.
Here are his pasted time stamp comments from the original video: *these timestamps do not work with Charlie's video, as there are different times!*
0:10 Mystical music transports us to a movie set, or a faraway countryside in Italy with a traveling circus in town. Is it real? Or a dream?
0:21 Holds his hands like a DP framing the picture
0:22 Backstage costume area
0:39 Hat has camera aperture like a movie camera
0:39 Theme from La Strada about the circus
1:00 Cast in their underwear, chaotic film set
1:05 Ridiculous introduction goes on, and on and on, what kind of a production is this?!
1:43 Still the introduction, like a circus intro building suspense, an impossibly grand setup that can never pay off, and can only crumble into disappointment.
1:48 The doom strikes. The grim reality of life, the deadly peril of the circus, the harsh realities of performers on the road, scraping for food, risking injury and even death.
1:53 flags with celluloid film printed on them.
2:09 Reels of film on the bass drums
2:32 Front man slates the action, just like a film
3:05 Reel to reel film drill set, a piece is being edited in. The film is being assembled as we watch.
3:57 A suicidal circus clown. No one will help him. Not the church, not the polizia, not the circus owner. Mysterious angel with a black umbrella (possibly Cabiria from Nights of Cabiria, a whore) saves him.
4:07 He limps toward the edge of the abyss, but the ground keeps extending in front of him, saving him from jumping off the edge, to his death.
4:35 Dancers support their romantic partners, who are almost limp, like puppets.
5:19 He gets to the edge ready to jump, and she saves him.
5:21 Wait, a sudden change of expression. Was this all a circus act? Or a real suicide?
5:43 Circus jugglers, dancing girls
6:01 Horns on tightropes, a circus act, a reference to BD’s show Constantly Risking Absurdity where they walked a tightrope
7:33 Audience applauds as if at a circus
7:55 Slate again
8:27 Women seduce, taking you away from your directing job
9:17 Three ring circus
9:40 Script reading around a table.
9:50 Now the men perform for the women, seated, equal opportunity sexual harassment
10:20 The circus leaves town, a company front going in the wrong direction-- a grand, beautiful mistake leading nowhere
10:40 Claudia Cardinale, the actress, Fellini’s leading lady, mysterious, beautiful , an illusion
10:49 Reel to reel film again
11:44 the cast of characters assembles to honor Fellini, who never shows up, he forgot his pants
11:46 Claudia Cardinale is welcomed, as if at a premiere
11:50 Strips of film are flags
11:56 Claudia’s famous white scarf, miles long, an illusion
12:15 In Humanism, to which Fellini subscribed, there's a belief is that God is an unknown entity, and may not exist at all. Instead, value the clowns and experiences in your life. It’s all we have.
12:15 Fellini’s chair is empty. There is no god to save us. We only have pantless actors, clowns, dancing women and frauds in our lives to add meaning.
12:29 In the background, a stagehand on a ladder holds a white scarf, same as Claudia Cardinale's, same as the white strips of film, but making a DP's camera frame out of the white scarf- a bent and broken frame, a warped window view of Fellini's skewed, flawed, beautiful world.
