A great point on the demographic this is really intended for, Phil! No doubt the Prime is a technological marvel and great value for those looking explicitly for a 4-channel standalone controller. But since it will take quite a few years before Denon can take over the club and stage scene like the CDJs have, getting this for half the price of a NXS2-series DJM and CDJ combo seems like a great deal for those who want the second best option in a "bargain pro club setup". And if you talk to professional DJs about virtual decks, which in all essence all 4-channel 2-jog controllers are, they would never imagine using it, they would use 4 physical decks, as would any club or stage. Looking at this as the "XDJ RX3" with support for add-on decks is more sensible, and would correctly outline the target market. I don't see this as a direct challenger to the Prime 4, rather an extremely cost-effective alternative to a full NXS2 setup fused with all the good things the XDJ series has to offer. A good product at a good price - for the right demographic (which again, is not the Prime 4 users..)

X1800 and SC5000 have been out for more than two years, with their prices halved - how long do you think it will take for them to "take over" ?
I think most people in these comments just want a nexus 2 setup in controller form for 4 grand less than a nexus 2 setup.
This controller is a godsend, the limitations are why it's so cheap, if it had everything it would make nexus setups obsolete. As a scratcher, I've wanted full sized mechanical jogs on a standalone for years...this is an insta-buy for me and probably a lot of other people who want the exact feel of a nexus setup that doesn't cost 7 grand.

Just bought one yesterday.... Ecstatic so far.... Used it yesterday in the Club; out of the box without trying it first and had no squabbles at all. The learning curve is quite gentle... so far anyway. OH.... and it utilises Serato's new fad "Stems" quite well. The sound is also awesome..... will be back with more as we explore it further; but so far..... 💟👍👍👍 THUMBS UP👍✌

as a club dj i find this a perfect set up that dosnt involve spending thousands on a nexus setup. the not having the extra two channels isn't real an issue its something that i would never use for one main reason there's just to much going on to keep track of on one little screen. if i was playing a four deck setup it would be on a full nexus setup for sure. me personly i would have my 12s hooked up on Chanel 3 and 4 purely for flexibility with new and old tunes.

I see it like this:
Pioneer tried to hard. Plain and simple. With that trying hard, they made unnecessary compromises. My solution for Pioneer based on the comments, the reviews, and looking at what I prefer in a Pioneer controller is basically stick to the roots and don't look at competition.
I love the concept of this controller, however, it would of been nice to see these things:
-It being strictly a Rekordbox controller. One thing people don't realize that if you want a controller compatible with more than one software, internal specs has to be modified for it (taking away features that would of loved to see on this that the DDJ 1000 has like the Pad fx).
-Not copy the Denon model so much. I knew ahead of time that Pioneer was gonna release another controller, however, I thought it would be modeled after the DDJ 1000 after it getting solid reviews or CDJs+DJM. The XDJ XZ wasn't what I expected because they modeled it too much after the Denon controller. If Pioneer would of took this concept but stuck to more their own original model everyone loves about Pioneer, it would been better.
There are other things too but those are the two main points.

The omission of the pad effects is a big mistake in my opinion. And definitely like you say to do with the unit supporting multiple software. The DDJ1000 was great having the DJM style effects on the mixer section but also covered the pad effects too. Pioneer time and time again release hardware and leave off important features.
@@halcyondaystunes Yeah man, I truly do like the concept of this controller but like I said, if they would of just stuck to their roots and not look at their competition as "competition," it would of been so much better. But I also understand pressures from consumers wanting something "like" Denon or "like" whatever. However, they have to understand that they're not Denon and can't copy what they're doing. This isn't a matter of catch-up. Pioneer made great products because they were innovators, not copiers. Sticking to that and taking their time to build something is way more important than putting something out consumers are demanding based on what they see other companies are doing (especially if the people commenting about what they want planning on not buying it anyways. They're just rambling).

@@digitaldjtips I love the large platters. Blending on CDJ's is amazing. I'd rather have everything in one, rather than having to carry multiple cases. Also, with CDJ's you have to buy two of them, or more and a mixer. This unit is very cost efficient over the CDJ Series. Saves you around 800-900 bucks if my estimates are correct. I just wonder if the control is the same, so I'm stoked to see how they perform.
Saves you way more than that if you compare it to a Nexus setup!

Hi, regarding audio comparisons with the XDJ-XZ and the CDJ-2000 NXS2 and DJM 900 is there any difference in sound quality? ;)
I would like to add that the vinyl/analog pre-amps in this unit are decent compared to the usual poor quality one installed on many pioneer mixers including 900NX2 and S9

It's a little late PIONEER..... 2 channels? Its over priced. It's $600 more than the DENON DJ Prime 4, with the $600 I could buy some lighting or other accessories.
Hi, can you help me explain how it works if I want to connect one or two turntables next to it. I wanna play regular vinyl and I want to play control vinyl with phase dj? I will love to play a set with like 30-40min on vinyl then turn over to mp3 while not stopping the mix? Thanks you!
You connect the turntable and Phase to it and also connect the laptop to it, Rekordbox can recognise the turntables for DVS.

With today's technology it is possible for Pioneer DJ to have XDJ-XZ with 4 decks stand alone. Pioneer DJ didn 't do so for marketing purposes because they have more market share than Denon.
We don't think that's the case and I'm guessing you're speculating rather than having any insider knowledge, we just think this is where Pioneer are right now from a tech point of view - the Prime stuff has gotten so much good publicity for a reason, it isn't easy to do!
@@digitaldjtips Well honestly why would they do that, it would make an nx2 setup obsolete. There are obvious limitations on the xz but for $4000-$5000 cheaper I think it's a bargain. I've been wanting a standalone with full sized jog wheels for years, I would honestly have paid more for it.

Yeah I personally would never buy CDJs for personal use, let the clubs pay for that!
What a great video, lots of comparisons with other size equipment, from a former club Dj with access to a full Pioneer nexus studio set up, I have to say this would not personally suit me, don't get me wrong, I love it, but having carted nexus Cdj's.2000's 2 and a djm 900 mixer, the only benefit would be the reduced cabling, I have only just purchased a Xdj RX2 as the size for me is perfect, better for some of the clubs/bars with limited space in the dj booth, I think Denon make some great equipment, but will never take the industry standard crown from Pioneer, the founders of the first cd DJ player in 1994.

is the sound quality exactly the same on the djm900 nxs setup please?
If you look at this from the perspective that in standalone mode you get 2 extra mixer channels free, rather than 2 CDJs removed and compare that offering to the price of buying 1x DJM900NXS2 & 2x CDJ2000NXS2, then this is actually pretty good value. Personally I hate layered decks anyway, but it would be useful to have samples/loops on channels 3 & 4.

@@digitaldjtips Yes I think so because instead of trying to innovate & truly moving things along to compete with (well denon) they just slapped on a few "so called new features" from the XDJ-RX Jog Wheels, Master EQ, A controller to work with both Serato & RB.. ETC... Be honest Denon is miles ahead of this...
Really it's not always a case of who's ahead, as Pioneer has its fans, and this feels VERY Pioneer - you're getting a full look and feel for $2k - including Serato copatibility. For many that will be compelling (not all, agreed).

Not on this unit, no. You can on CDJ3000s, and maybe on the Opus Quad (can't remember - if not, it'll arrive soon I'm sure).

Can you use Rekordbox Hot Cues on Denon Prime 4? I mean will they even show up upon loading since the HotCues are made in a Pioneer software? If not I cannot use Denon and must stick with Pioneer cause I am not going to Re-organize Hot Cues in thousands of songs in my library.

Hey Phil great review as always but to be honest I am not impressed no sample function no magvel crossfader no crossfader adjustment on the hardware itself not everyone is scratch djs probably serato will sort these issues out great review bro🔥🔥🔥

Learn your tracks set hot cues, and auto loops, make your own samples and use hot cues. You can get way more creative and original then just using a built in sampler. It might take some actual dj work and talent and phrasing skills. But worth it and fun.
Actually wn u compare Pioneer vs. Denon:
Denon wins cuz they’ve gone to the next generation of DJ gears cuz they have provided everything in one controller, but Pioneer keeps releasing stuff one by one not fully featured cuz they want us to keep buying!
But Pioneer keeps taking over all places!

The dominance of Pioneer in recent years definitely makes it hard for any one else to get a look in (especially in the club scene)
@@digitaldjtips it's funny, coz even me myself as a fan boy was willing for denon to 'take over'. I'm not even sure what I was on about. Don't need denon to take over. Just need them to stay in business and keep innovating. Each brand has its place in the entire community really.

Why arent your decks central display showing track info?
Incredibly annoying to make this without 4 deck standalone, mixing. Would have been an instant buy for so many people had they implemented this, with out it infringing on the professional club setups (not to say it wouldn’t still end up in many bars)
I think that the only downside is the price, because everything else is great. The soundcard is better than de DDJ 1000 and you have the four decks if you use serato or rekordbox. It's an ideal choice to aboyid buying the full nexus gear that is way more expensive.

I’m just hoping for a small update to that. I’ve been waiting for a while! I honestly feel this point Serato might have no choice but to start making their own hardware. Nothing seems to quite have all the right bits except for that SZ2. I just wonder if they’re dropping something new. That’s what’s holding me back from getting it since it’s such a old product at this point.
Shall pioneer make a controller with Wi-Fi …. Like denon…. Or this isn’t on their map? It’s a pivotal feature that makes the prime 4 always a winner … with pioneer quality this would be a dream piece of equipment

Only reason i want to buy this is to use a 3rd deck option on it. Such as a xdj-700. I was going for 3x xdj-700 then a djm-750mixer but thought this would be cheaper.? Really stuxk on this option

some ppl complain how big it is. Come on man. SL1200 is almost 12kg/per turntable. Weight is not issue for me tho.
Very true, it's easy to forget! In comparison to more modern gear I can understand that particular complaint though
I would love to know what soundcard is in the mixer and if the sound quality is even closer to the nexus setup. For me the sound is the most important thing. Anyway, i think that the master EQ is a game changer, because maybe you can have a worse soundcard but you can calibrate the controller to your room and in that change you can do the magic. 13:08 on USB ports. Why, because I had a lot of problems until I could open my mind. Because the USB are more vulnerable than a solid external disk.

The 4 channels are mostly for extra 2 decks in case something goes wrong with the other 2 so those big name Dj’s can still play on festival. Average Dj doesn’t need 4 channel mixer but it just looks cool.
It's certainly true that most DJs can cope fine with just 2 decks
why is everyone avoiding the sound card topic? Has the sound quality given way to glowing buttons and knobs? does it even matter?

In my opinion there is no DJ controller that is to big....lol....All dj controllers do the same exact thing pretty much, so it all comes down to what you can afford. DJ controllers are just getting more beautiful and feature rich. I really love whats going on with them right now. An unfortunate side effect is that they may induce envy. That feeling sucks.

I love big units LOL. Wish it was full stamf alone but whatever. Bedroom djs can route the booth outputs into one of or both of the extra channels and have dedicated sampler channels and the 2 USB channels. I used to do this when using turntables. Doing that gave me a master effects channel and looping channel that can be layered. Once you get used to it it's really fricken nice.

I have the DDJ 1000 and I have been looking at this unit as I want the stand-alone option. I am considering waiting a while as I am thinking if this had the same screen size as the cdj 3000 it will be perfect, do you think this will be updated to a larger screen? cheers

Sounds good to us, nothing to complain about (or particularly praise either) - if you're the kind of person who asks about sound quality though do your best to try it out in person before splashing the cash on it!
Can’t decide on the 1000 or the XZ. I love pioneer but not sure weather to just get the 1000 and upgrade my laptop.
Yeah it's a tough one, we've got a feeling they'll release a new standalone this year so might be worth holding off and seeing what happens

We've asked our community in the past and a big portion said they only regularly use two channels for mixing, the XZ is great for that and you can still make use of the other two channels in standalone just not with internal decks

You need a laptop for all 4 internal channels, you can use two without a laptop and another two for things like CDJs/Turntables

An educated guess would just be Rekordbox has developed to a point that Pioneer would like to keep you in their ecosystem and don't need to work with other software manufacturers as much anymore

I’m wondering if it’s recommended to be upgraded from the DDJ SZ2? I’ve been DJing with my SZ2 for a few years and I’m kinda stuck to it. I see both have it’s pros and cons so I’m wondering if it’s worth to be upgraded.
What's wrong with your SZ2? If you can't very specifically point out the issues with the SZ2 and how they will be solved by a new piece of equipment then keep your money in your pocket

If you've used CDJs and a Mixer before you'll be able to work it out very quickly
Having no competition, Pioneer can do everything they like - it's simple. If Denon had better products, which they don't, things would be different, and prices... Pioneer is what you'll find in clubs, all these controllers will prepare you for what's waiting for you on NXS2 and probably new NXS setup, so you can't go wrong
That's not true. Pioneer and Denon are very equivalent in terms of gear, and many people would say Denon is ahead. However, much like Apple, people buy into the brand name of Pioneer without bothering to find out or care if it's actually better. Again, it might be, but this isn't $600 better than the Prime 4 and the NXS stuff isn't $3000 better than a Prime setup.
@@CG-vn8iy had Denon "flagships" for over a month - the worst stuff that I ever had (and I had a LOT of sketchy equipment). Slow, glitchy, unreliable, look and feel of a toy - total opposite of Pioneer. I'm not a fanboy, their products are overpriced and they became lazy and greedy. If I was - I wouldn't sell my complete NXS(1) setup and invest in Denons...It has been more than 2 years they are out and NOONE adopted them. Do you see them at any clubs or festivals ? Believe me, club owners would be first to get them if they were better built and more reliable than Pioneer. Denon had great chance and they - blew it.

I am thinking to get this but the stacked waveform functionality puts me off as I would get used to mixing by eyes rather than ears. Do you know if there is a way to change the display to two separate beatgrids?

Hey phil, your videos are always great. So i upgraded to the XDJ xz from the ddj sx3...(wouldve gotten the srt1000 or something similar if i knew what i was doing at the time)
i dj at parties and for fun, but soon i will like to play in piblic. i own two JBL LSR 308 powered monitors but i currently just use RCA cables for it. Do you think im better off with XLR cables instead of the RCA's? stupid question i know but thanks for the help anyway
RCA cables are OK for short distances (for example running your controller to a mixer that's sat right next to it) - if not use XLR's :)

One is a controller designed to be used with a laptop, and one is a "standalone" system, so they're not really comparable.

It looks a great standalone device for bars, smaller clubs and places that want a standalone system that gets very close to the flagship nexus set up.
But for me personally I’m gonna go for the ddj 800 as it does all that the xdj xz does and frees up funds for me to get a new iMac with a 4K retina screen.
