    I had the feeling that since the original commonwealth knew the existence of the abyss and the coming war, this ship was just one plan into preparing for the coming conflict but the rebellion destroyed the original plans.
    Imagine if the top big wigs told the nietzens was the truth about the treaty and the building up process that it was only to buy time.

    • @Taospark
      @Taospark 6 місяців тому

      I think even if the Nietzcheans knew the Vedrans' long-term plan, they would have been egotistical enough to go it alone or betray the others like Tyr wound up doing.

  • @MjikThize
    @MjikThize 5 років тому +26

    Nautical terms error. The draft of a ship is not equal to it's vertical height. It's only the measurement of what is below the waterline. As a spacefaring ship, it does not have a draft, it's simply it's height. As your previous video also had an error of terminology, the length of a ship is it's Lenght, the width of a ship is it's beam. The draft is what is below the waterline and it's height is what is above it's waterline or it's total keel to top of mast height when out of the water.

    • @DrewLSsix
      @DrewLSsix 5 років тому +3

      MjikThize If space is the analog for water then the ship is entirely immersed in it and the term draft could arguably apply to the height of the ship. But that’s assuming naval terminology has any place in space to begin with 🤷‍♂️
      The rest could be chalked up to language drift, if naval terms become the preferred way to describe space ships then the terminology will of course be adapted to suit, it’s not like the terminology you use here was formed of whole cloth some day in the past. It’s the result of generations of evolution.

    In the show, they made Siege Perilous seem like a dreadnought able to fight entire fleets. What they don’t mention is its awful defenses. It’s a hit-and-run ship. If a Glorious Heritage class can get close, the Siege Perilous is done for. Commonwealth didn’t really have a battleship type ship, just heavy cruisers.
    Only 3 Siege Perilous ships were built before the rebellion. One was destroyed in port, one was captured, one went insane and started translating Egyptian cartouches... I mean started an eco-terrorist movement

    • @Taospark
      @Taospark 6 місяців тому +1

      They're supposed to be glass cannons since all Commonwealth ships operated in battle groups just like battleships had screens since they were easy kills for submarines in WWII alone. It was the Glorious Heritage cruisers that were meant to operate alone on longer haul missions but the Commonwealth hadn't fought a full scale war for a thousand years except for the Magog who were only a threat up close.

    I love the commonwealth ship names, they're just ridiculous and boastful and show how old, large and powerful they are, it's like if the federation had an ego and were also the sole dominant power in the entire galaxy for thousands of years.
    Also the fact that the commonwealth originally came from an empire could explain the naming conventions.

  • @JobeStroud

    I never heard of this show before you started these videos on it. I was in Europe and other places the entire run of this series. After watching the first 2 seasons it was pretty clear on why they lost. Betrayal on EVERY ship in the fleet and well everywhere plus them being attacked by the betrayers with their own fleet. Also it seems that the Commonwealth was so pacifistic that it would never launch a Nova bomb. I would suspect they were just deterrents.

  • @digitalis2977
    @digitalis2977 5 років тому +6

    Funny how Commonwealth naming conventions are taken from Earth History, Literature, and popular culture because before the Fall of the Commonwealth, much of the principal design and most all of the construction of the major classes was done at Earth.
    "Righteous Fist of Heaven" is the proper name of the rebel faction of the Chinese Boxer Rebellion.
    "Siege Perilous" was a seat at the Round Table in Arthurian Legend.
    "Major Tom" is...well, you get the idea.
    The notable exception to the rule is that of the Hero Ship..."Glorious Heritage" as it is listed by the Wiki as being a commemorative name for the new Commonwealth Ship-of-the-Line to reflect the...you guessed it...glorious heritage and longevity of the Systems Commonwealth.
    Way to trigger the Flag on that one, guys...

    You seem to forget that Andromeda was not the only major vessel tricked into hopeless ambush. There had been many already brought in and destroyed in the black hole system alone and the neitzchians were doing that across 3 galaxies.
    The Systems commonwealth just didn't expect that initial attack and got beat badly before knowing they were under assault.

    I look at the Nietzschien victory as the softening up of the Systems Commonwealth by the Maggog World Engine. With a united Commonwealth and Nietzschien forces the great evil guy couldn't win, so sent agents to help cause and aid the Nietzschien rebellion, to a just better than Pyrrhic victory.

    • @weldonwin
      @weldonwin 5 років тому +5

      Then there was some time travel stuff, where the Andromeda crew basically nuke a huge Nietzschian fleet, right before a battle with the Highguard, so what would have been a decisive victory becomes an utter slaughter for both sides, ensuring the Nietzschians could never form a unified empire that would provide stability for the galaxy and be able to fight the Magog

    You say these ships are ridiculously overpowered, but when compared to the ships they were designed to fight (the Magog), they were still woefully inadequate. Andromeda couldn't really stand up to a tin can with a point-singularity-projector, much less a Magog swarm host, MUCH MUCH less the Worldship.
    In fact, you could argue that that's the reason why the Vedrans armed their capital ships with Nova Bombs: to have a fighting chance against what was coming.

    I think people are forgetting that the Commonwealth lost a lost of good experienced soldiers and commanders as well as a lot of ships because of the treachery of the ubers.
    Also the ubers were rallied had surprise and planning all done.
    What should really be surprising is why the commonwealth could not gather and rally fast enough with enough strenght to put up a good fight.
    Also the ubers had a lot more ships than it was presumed. Like almost 10 time more ships then believed. This would make them a very large and serious threat to the Commonwealth.

    The Commonwealth lost the civil war because 1) caught completely by surprise, 2) fleet was scattered due to the massive amount of territory they typically needed to patrol (basically three galaxies), and 3) having only fought in a single war over the course of the last couple centuries (the brief war with the Magog which would be more accurate to call a border skirmish) meant the high guard was seriously undertrained and suffered from the same problems the US military suffered at their entry into WW2, making noob mistakes, being careless and otherwise arrogant. So while 'a fleet of its own,' the numbers were practically non-existent to allow that to be brought to bear in a meanfull way (And I would not be surprised if some of the alliance leaders factored in some of this when choosing the time-it was slow, but we do see in the series that the High Guard updating parts of the fleet/equipment in response to the Maggog that could have made the fight harder for them) Also Lore, think we'll get your thoughts on the Battle of Witchhead/Angel Dark, Demon Bright episode?

    Like your title said... HOW do you command a whole ARSENAL of very big and powerful and DIVERSE warships BUT still lose a huge intergalactic war?? This is what we see when the bad guys got the plot armor. You can think the Vederans for these fancy ass names. An not to mention when Hunt restarted the Commonwealth these all STILL struggled and quite a few Andromeda sister ships and ships like this rejoined the new fleet kinda like they was all glorified show off type ships.. like that rare, expensive, collector car that is talked about being so great but really isn't or is limited in how good it is once you try to drive it.
    Somehow I get the impression with the few exceptions like Andromeda don't think most these would fare so fell fighting Voyager, Defiant, or Enterprise and even ships like the Millennium Falcon might LITERALLY out fight quite a few of these in one on one

  • @stevew8513

    Robert Hewitt Wolfe was in charge of Andromeda (before Sorbo got him kicked off since Wolfe wanted to focus on good storytelling instead of making every episode about the character of Hunt like Sorbo wanted) and a few years ago floated the idea of rebooting Andromeda. Since the show has been made three times already (Genesis II, Planet Earth, and Andromeda) it seems like a fourth version isn't out of the question. So, here's an idea... can we place Andromeda within the Star Trek universe? Andromeda was set something like 4000 years ahead of modern day, maybe Andromeda can be set that far into the Federation's future too. A lot of Andromeda has a Star Trek/Federation feel to it, anyhow.
    And while we're throwing money around for new Star Trek series based on past Trek people's outside projects, how about we reboot Babylon 5 - but in the Star Trek universe. JMS originally pitched it as a Trek show, Paramount turned it down but stole loads of his ideas since they thought no program based on his storyline would ever get made. So, let's set it in a hundred years past TNG, we can have species like the Tholians fulfill the Vorlon's position in the lore, that kind of thing.

    • @pufthemajicdragon
      @pufthemajicdragon Рік тому

      Actually I've been working on some ways to reboot the series - and I definitely do NOT want to put it (officially) in the ST universe, especially with what CBS has been doing with it lately.
      The best thing they could do, IMO, is write a good, solid, new series within the same universe.
      One option being a prequel series set before the Long Night showcasing the Commonwealth at the height of its power and glory, with drama and action coming from the burgeoning internal politics and breakdown of the organization that was happening leading up to the Magog invasion - I see this being kind of a "West Wing" political drama.
      A second option being a series set 20 years after the original series, which could feature cameos from the original crew of the Andromeda - this being a "Next Generation" style of sequel, as the new Commonwealth rises and expands and deals with its growing pains.
      And a third option could be to set a new series right smack in the middle of the Long Night, maybe following Beka's dad and his mis-adventures with Sid before he got hooked on flash, or just following a an entirely new cast of characters - this being something more of a dark and gritty "Firefly" space western style of show.
      Honestly I'd love to see all three of these get made at some point, and if whichever was done first was done well enough, there's the chance it could spawn a whole new franchise with multiple spinoffs to compare to ST or SG. Maybe one or a few of us should get together, combine our skills and our passion for the show, and write up some pilot episodes to pitch to a studio.
      On that note - it looks like the IP is owned by Global Television, so it's not as long of a shot as some IPs with mixed ownership.

    You're talking about the "Rightous Fist of Heaven" Class Deep Stand-off Attack, but the one you're showing and talking about later is the "Seige Perillous" class Deep Stand-off Attack II class...to which only 3 were completed at the time of the Commonwealth's fall; and only 2 (Balance of Judgement & Wrath of Archilles) survived the war.
    ...also, the design of the DSA2 or "DSX" as its more commonly called, was created as a response to the Magog attacks...ironically the Magog attacks that the Commonwealth then made a treaty with that cause the Bone-Arms to get all p!55y over and start their rebellion about; but the ships were easy pickings since they were still in dock when the Bone-Arms attacked their port.
    OH!
    And like with your other video about the Glorious Heritage class, you made an error... High Guard ships have 2 power sources (like a Starfleet ship); they have their reserve Anti-Proton Reactors, and the Primary Exotic Matter Reactor, that, like the Inverse Aperature Sensor Suite, is used for Quantum Slipstream.

    While I don't mind the ponderousness of "Siege Perilous" in general, it is strange that an alien culture would make a reference to Arthurian legend (or if they did, just as the U.S. might name something after, let's say, a native American legend) I am not sure I get the reference (or how an empty seat reserved for the knight who would one day find the Holy Grail relates to a warship). Maybe the writers were playing on the modern word "siege" rather than the legendary meaning of "seat."

      Before the time machine episode In the final battle the commonwealth only had hundreds ships left compared to 1500 rebel ships.

  • @lorzon
    @lorzon 5 років тому

    The Nietzscheans won because they outnumbered the Commonwealth and we better trained for combat. The Commonwealth had relatively few ships and bases to govern the amount of space they occupied because they hadn't had a serious war until the Magog. Meanwhile, the Nietzscheans apparently spent the entirety of the time from the signing of the nonaggression pact with the Magog until the war began building lots of heavily armed, but fast, cheap and maneuverable warships. Compared to the Commonwealth fleet that had a few, but larger and more powerful ships of the line. Sure the Glorious Heritage could engage dozens of ships and have a reasonable expectation of victory, when the odds are 100 or more to one, even if you are taking minimum damage from any individual ship, it becomes a game of inches and an eventual death by a thousand cuts.
