      Also, not all Nietzscheans turned against the Commonwealth. Some remained loyal, believing that their survival was dependent on the Commonwealth. They ended up going to Tarazed and settling down there with the other survivors. It’s how Telemachus Rhade was born

    Its important to note that Roddenberry had initially written Andromeda as Star Trek in the FAR future. The common wealth was supposed to be the future of the Federation, the Nietzscheans were Klingons, M'Gog was Borg... Think of the prides of the Nietzscheans as the clans of Klingons...etc.etc. I'm not saying that its all direct translation but once you start thinking of what the origin ideas were of Andromeda and their races a lot of stuff makes much more sense. This was the fall and re-rise of the Federation.

    • @artembentsionov
      @artembentsionov 4 роки тому +6

      This was written back in the 70s. Borg weren’t even on the table yet. Much of it were half-baked ideas centered around a guy named Dylan Hunt in a post-apocalyptic world. They tried to adapt it to shows twice before. Didn’t take off until Andromeda

      Close but not quite. The initial idea for this was as followup show to Trek. It was on The enterprise (NCC-1701) and Kirk was to be frozen in time. The Nietzscheans were originally the Vulcans, and instead of Gaheris Rahde betraying Hunt, it would have been Spock betraying Kirk because peace with the Maggog was illogical. However, Roddenberry realized that this wasn't a good idea because Star Trek was supposed to be positive and so he started writing it as a different universe.

      Andromeda was 90% Robert Hewitt Wolfe’s creation and 10% Gene Roddenberry. The truth is Robert used Gene’s name as a marketing gimmick to get the show made, he burrowed and adapted just enough material from two of Gene Roddenberry’s failed tv pilots called Planet Earth & Genesis II to justify using the Roddenberry name. It’s not a coincidence that the show’s writing took a nose dive in quality when Wolfe was forced out in season 2. Robert Wolfe now admits that his vision and plan for the series was beyond the means and budget of the studio, the show did not perform well enough in ratings to change that.

    I've read some very interesting bits of info. The Commonwealth's Peace treaty with the Magog was only meant to buy the Commonwealth time to build a new fleet of warships more powerful than Andromeda Ascendant designed to fight them. Two such ships became completed, one of them was the Balance of Judgement.
    If the Nietzscheans had been patient enough to a wait a few more years the war with the Magog would most likely have restarted with this new fleet supported by the Nietzscheans who would be eager to continue the fight. But the Nietzschean rebellion stopped all such plans. If the Nietzscheans had known what Commonwealth was truly doing they most likely would have postponed or all together stopped any plans with their Rebellion.

    • @Rhron
      @Rhron 6 років тому +2

      I think they were more major skirmishes that lasted 15 years rather than a real big war, a few worlds, colonies, space stations and starships where its populace and crews were devoured by the Magog essentialy during that time period.

      That puts a lot of faith into the foresight of the Vedrans. We don't have a solid timeline of events leading up to the Rebellions, so we don't know if Andromeda's meeting the Worldship and return to the three galaxies occurred before Brandenburg Tor or not.
      Judging from the fact that the Vedrans seemed to do jack all during the 300 years they were isolated leads me to believe that while they might've seen it coming, they seemed to be mostly powerless to stop it. Even by preventing the Capital of the Commonwealth from dying.

    • @mattwho81
      @mattwho81 6 років тому +5

      The Magog fought in swarms, they would raid and overwhelm worlds but they were opportunistic, they didnt think in terms of territory or supply lines. The neitzchens were methodical ruthless and organised, they knew exactly where to hit the Commonwealth to cripple it. In terms of sheer numbers they conquered only a small percentage of the Commonwealth but it was exactly the right worlds to kill the central government and military.

    I've been wanting to see a detailed breakdown of the Nietzchian culture and overall philosophy for ages now, and frankly I'm rather surprised that it hasn't been done yet. I always figured that you would be the one to do this, if anyone really. Believe me though, YES we want it! The Nietzchian cultural philosophy is truly quite fascinating, and the fact that the Andromeda series is so often maligned and/or overlooked is a damn shame honestly. That show had absolutely no right being as good as it was, and I love how it's being rediscovered by the younger/newer generations of sci-fi fans.

    I really enjoyed this show, just got done binge watching it last month. It had a good mix of action and humor. One of my favorite screens is from the first episode after Seamus discovers that Dylan is onboard and tells the rest that the ship isn’t abandoned. When he tells him that there is some big guy onboard and says “seriously, he could be some Greek god”. Too bad the last seasons went down hill and it got canceled. Seems there are a lot of really good Sci Fi future/space themed shows that ended way too early.

      Lore Reloaded Also another franchise to consider, Blakes 7.
      There was the intergalactic war against the Andromedans (see the connection) which lead to the partial collapse of the Terran federation and it's attempts to expand again afterwards. Oh and the 61 Cygnus aliens and their biowarefare attempt.
      Also way out of left field, Power rangers, never watched the show, just the 10 minute fan reboot a few years ago with Katie Sackoff and James Vanderveek. But read some lore in the comments that explained a bit about Rita, although still confused.
      Agree about Earth final conflict, kind of lost track in later episodes with the other aliens, earths original culture in parallel worlds and some sort of alien amalgamation.

    Just found this video and I would like to point out that you glossed over a pretty important reason why the Systems Commonwealth agreed to a truce with the Magog. During a clandestine deep scouting mission, the High-Guard discovered the Magog World Ship. They decided, foolishly, to keep this fact a secret and decided they needed breathing room to rearm and rebuild their forces, hence the treaty with the Magog. Why no one thought to inform the Nietzscheans about the world ship is just dumb/foolish.

    According to the original showrunner, the show would have eventually had Dylan, Tyr, Harper, and Rev Bem in charge of their own nations: New Commonweath, Nietzchean Empire, Consensus of Parts, and a Wayist theocracy. They’d fight each other before joining together against the Abyss and the Pyrians (who are actually backed by the stars like Trance). Beka would end up becoming the Abyss in order to continue the endless cycle of universal collapse and expansion caused by the conflict between the Abyss and the stars (who are actually demons or something).

I think that the Commonwealth resembles the Fed's so much is more reflective of the era it was made. As for your next Andromeda vid, maybe on the Netichean Alliance? "Andromeda" was actually an amalgamation of two subsequent "pilots" after the original Star Trek was canceled, and the character of Dylan Hunt was used by Roddenberry three times in three different concepts: "Andromeda" which was a "man-out-of-time" story with Hunt as a scientist cast about through the timeline (Quantum Leap before there was a Quantum Leap) and "Gene Roddenberry's Starship" which was analogous to Star Trek...yet the other side of the coin...with Hunt (Kirk) and the Starship (Enterprise) traveling the galaxy after the fall of the Commonwealth (Federation) trying to do Good, and a third that never really went anywhere. The "Starship" and "Andromeda" concepts were combined to give us Andromeda we know today, with the ship and captain out of time, trying to restore order and goodness to the universe.
      So it wasn't so much spite as the Dark Angel on the Other Shoulder while he was writing Star Trek: the 180 degree dystopia to the Federation's utopia, with humanity being no one special in particular instead of the Glue binding everything together.
      Also, at the point of of inception of "Starship" the Star Trek franchise had failed (though it had garnered some minor success and popularity. It was off the air, and Roddenberry never expected to revisit it again. However, if he did, the idea of "Starship" was that if "Star Trek" had failed to stand on its own two legs, perhaps the aftermath of Star Trek would fare better...that is, something the loyal fans might tune in to watch because of the shared universe, but also something new to entice new viewers.

    Something I think you missed/didn't spend much time on is the effect of the Battle of Witchhead on the Nietzschean Empire/Alliance. The loss of so many ships and the resulting changes to the balance of power between the prides, (Off the top of my head I think up until the battle the Drago-Kazov pride had been the most powerful pride and also a unifying force, but due to their casualties at Witchhead they were weakened enough that the next most powerful pride, the Jaguar Pride, decided to attack them resulting in the breakup of the Empire) led to the breakup of the Nietzschean Empire as the various prides vied for control. This in turn led to the Long Night as with no powerful central government the universe descended into chaos and the Magog invasion went largely unopposed.

      Thankfully, the UCRF was even stronger than the Commonwealth and the Nietzscheans and was able to slow the magog down and in most cases, stop them completely, that is until Andromeda stumbled upon the magog world ship. The Nietzschean of the Drago Kazov were aware of the UCRF and didn't dare try to mess with them, and would often try to flee when they showed up, friendly or not. They also took on the job of stamping out piracy. thanks to some timely intervention by UCRF forces, Tarazed and its inhabitants survived the Nietzschean attack. After the battle at Tarazed and the Commonwealth's subsequent return to Tarn Vedra, the Sabra-Jaguar and a few other Nietzschean prides left the Nietzschean Alliance and joined the UCRF, leaving the Drago Kazov to fend for itself.

    Slight misunderstanding on the Nietzschean philosophy there. It was based not on perfection itself but instead on the pursuit thereof. Subtle but profound difference there. The race was built upon the philosophies of Nietzsche, one of which was the drive for constant self-improvement. The show made a big deal about the physical differences between baseline humans and Nietzcheans, especially after the fall of the commonwealth, especially since the Nietzcheans took so many routes to perfection. They were proponents of both natural selection and eugenics as well as genetic designing. On top of this they employed cybernetic as well as nanotech enhancements. I thought they were fascinating, but one thing I always wondered, and I don't think it was addressed in the show, was if a baseline human could make himself into a Nietzschean and be adopted into the tribes.

    • @bsmnt23
      @bsmnt23 6 років тому

      honestly I'd thought it was a lot longer separation between the humans and Nietzschean split, like 1000 years. You're right. It would make better sense and the timeline of the show is...pretty huge. It was interesting to speculate on, but thinking it through some more, I don't think the social dynamics of the prides would allow a baseline human to join, no matter the physical improvements. I mean, remember how much trouble Tyre had in joining a pride, and...damn. And holy cow what a great idea that is, giving Andromeda to the BSG people.

    I always figured that the Nietzscheans only ever served with the Commonwealth because they believed in their Pride social structure; to the average Nietzschean, the Commonwealth would have been this immensely powerful, unbeatable Alpha, to which one must bow and obey. But then you had those who, because of that same Pride social structure and the need to constantly prove themselves, and become the Alpha themselves, looked at the decadent Commonwealth -- which had known utter peace for 1000 years because who the hell wants to fight even ONE Commonwealth warship, when it's capable of popping stars like zits and glassing planets in a few minutes -- as a weakened ruler, one to be deposed and replaced by themselves. And because something like 25% to 50% of CW shipboard crews might have been Nietzschean or Nietzschean descent, with loyalties to their Prides, they could, and did, destroy or take ships entirely from within, long before the warfleet was ready. So when the Nietzschean warfleet moved, there were only isolated stragglers of CW forces, where before there had been unstoppable armadas. And then, when the CW finally caved, and the Vedran home system vanished, along with the central race responsible for the establishment of the CW, the Nietzscheans all tried to take credit for its destruction.... which, given every Pride wanted to be the Alpha Pride, meant infighting, insurrection, sabotage, and internecine fighting that debilitated their own forces to the point they had nothing left to enforce their new 'rule' of the galaxy.

    This show had such great potential, then went way "off the rails" and "off the deep end" all at the same time.
    Season 3 should have been a war on two fronts with two quite original antagonist in science fiction. Magog demanded life to sustain themselves, and the parallel universe aliens could have the same need for energy. Imagine those aliens needing to strip-mine planets, and snuff out stars to restore connection with and maintain their civilization. Both would wipe out civilizations but for entirely separate reasons. Think a Voyager and Borg type story could have worked, it kind of redeemed Voyager. That "enemy of my enemy" conflict lends well to stories.

      Not sure what happened to Tyr or why they got rid of his character, but the guy who played Rev gained some kind of allergy to the Mggog makeup. The reason for Doyle in S5 was because Lexa was pregnant. Obviously they could still show her in the screen from the chest up, but having Rommie still there was impossible until later in the season after she gave birth.

    This show had some of the best sifi battles to date & epicwriting. If I were to complain it be mostly minor because the for most shows on tv at that time the episodes were good but sometimes too drawn out in one way or another. The guest stars and supporting actors could be hit or miss but i liked the long timers of the show & even more as guest stars. I did like the better eps thats why i kept watching. if they only made a movie or remaking would be cool the season enders at each season were often amazingly done they had the best cliffhangers some seemed show ending but just lead to a wild show the next season. over all had it really good twists and mysterious lore etc... that make it fun to watch.

    Toi be fair, despite the recent war with the magog, Commonwealth was just totally unprepared and taken by surprise when it came to the Nietzschean rebellion. Whom having prepared and built up an impressive military fleet, crew by professional and battle hardened warriors and with sleeper cells and surprise on their side. wipe out 505 of high guard military assets at wars start in shipyards and drydocks. Which meant that from the outset the commonwealth was on a hiding to nothing and suffered defeatafter defeat until theyhad been ground down to remnants that would be destroyed in final battle at witchead. Although at the same time, inflicting enormous damage on their enemies that would leave them not much off at the wars end.
    Basically a war of mutual destruction that left andromeda universe wide open for the renewed magog invasion that followed closely on the heels of the wars end and then chaos of the long night to come.

They should have fought the Magog until that species would have admitted defeat or become extinct. I'm not blaming the Nietzschean's because they primarily viewed most of the members of the Commonwealth as weak and unworthy of survival. I'd seen parts of the series im the past, but only a month or two ago I decided to watch it from start to finish on DVD. It was GREAT for the first season and a half or so, and IDK what happened afterwords, but there was a clear downwards spiral. The rest of S2 and S3 were okay, but there's an obvious drop in quality. Season 4 was terrible and while season 5 was better, it was still barely watchable IMO. Kind of a shame because it seemed to have so much potential.

      Never a clear reason in canon, but from the information, I always saw it as a mixture of the belief that the Commonwealth no longer had the will to fight a serious conflict and would never reform to (proven false by both the slow introduction of new ships/research and that the remaining HG fought to the last ship), feeling of 'betrayal' by the Commonwealth singing the treaty that disohnered the victims (even though Neitz philosophy encourages living a life that challenges to prove your worth-which would be the outer rims of Commonwealth space planetwise and most at risk to unknown attacker-and that it was implied it would make those lost planets uninhadable to eliminate the maggog), and their philosophy that of course that it should be 'them' become the power over the known worlds (while not realizing that a number of races would fight this for many reasons-such as not a repeat of the Vedran conquest *Kalderians* or go their own way if given between the Alliance and Neitz rule). Also, it must be noted that the state of the Known Worlds when Dylan emerges is a statement on the flaws of the Neitz philosophy that would have surfaced once a major imbalance formed even without Witchhead.

      I think when Rommie says 'real war' she means that the Commonwealth has not been needed on a total war footing in twelve centuries-limited to dealing with pirates and border patrol. The Magog-Commonwealth conflict was maybe seen as simply a very bloody border skirmish (and with the size and therefore population, even a few dozen worlds lost with a billion per planet would be minor). This seems to be supported by dialogue that until the civil war the High Guard prevented the Magog from spreading 'deep' into CW space and within the first bit of systems taken.

      Sorry, late reply... The problem the Nietzcheans had was that the Commonwealth called for peace right after gaining the upper hand in the war. Also as the Nietzcheans made up the bulk of that region of space's population and military force they suffered the bulk of the losses. So when the Commonwealth was finally in a position to wipe out the Magog they decided to sue for peace instead. Leaving the Nietzcheans with billions dead, worlds lost that the commonwealth handed over to the magog as payment for peace and nothing to show for it but a central government unwilling to see the war through. This in result is also why the Nietzcheans did so well in the revolt, because their forces were heavily hardened by the war. The irony being as well, that the few major victories the Commonwealth had during the revolt came from loyal Nietzcheans forces who were likewise as experienced and able and their counterparts.
