- Original photos and video for the final concert of Chicago singer and guitarist Terry Kath. We took these photos at the Dec. 1, 1977 Chicago concert at the Oakland Alameda County Coliseum Arena in Oakland, California. This was the final stop on their 1977 world tour and it would end up being Terry Kath's final performance. He would fatally shoot himself a little more than 7 weeks later.

I was at that concert. I gotta say that up to that point I had been to tons of concerts and had seen all the great bands of the 60's-70's but none compare to this particular one, Terry's last one. When they came out for their third encore, I couldn't believe that it could get any louder from the audience . . . but it did! To me that was testimony of how great the band was but more, how great Terry Kath made them. He truly was the heart and soul and will always be remembered as one of rock's finest musician/guitarist/soloist/songwriter/bandleader. RIP my man. We love you - always

Very well said. I graduated that summer from h.s. in 78. I remember driving to school that fateful morning. I was living in Ohio then. I had the radio on WMMS home of the buzzard that morning. Then the news broke. It was a feeling of shock and disbelief. I couldn't get to school fast enough to talk to my friends about it. I needed to be around people to fully soak in what I had just heard. I needed to find solace from other's. It just couldn't be true ..
I was there as well. Originally was going to the Baby's Concert but when they canceled (Later found out broke up) We were offered the Chicago Tickets. I had been to a Day on the Green with Chicago and that was good, this was on another level.
I've been enjoying Chicago as a band for thirty years - but I just fell back in love with Kath - his guitar and his vocals are amazing. RIP Terry.

I grew up with Chicago from the beginning and I’m only recently learning about his issues and what a terrible loss his passing was to himself, the music world and the band. Many times you never know the scope of what people are really dealing with until they’re gone. Loosing Terry Kath was a tragedy on so many different levels.

What a loss for music and people who loved him or where loved by him.
When I see the pictures of Terry from the last 12 months of his life and also concert footage: he was gettin fatter and fatter, his eyes often look so sad and lookin gout to nowhere - he lost his condition and concentration - it made me feel so sad - that´s what pressure and drugs made out of this unbeliefable person and musican. It´s sooooo sad!

I think Terry meant the sappy, syrupy stuff that Peter Cetera was doing around the time and continued with throughout the 80's, both in and out of Chicago. This song is not sappy and syrupy in the least...this is pure soul and passion. R.I.P. Terry Kath...
@@chuckpotockimusic2288 Well, we cannot assume what Terry would have thought about Peter's music in the 1980s, right? Peter Cetera 1981 solo was far from sappy. What is documented is that Terry did not like "If you leave me now." He had left the studio when PC and Guercio decided to record it. One cannot blame Terry. I would be pissed if the 1st #1 hit happened without me.
Saw Chicago in the mid 70s in Ft. Worth. Awesome concert. Terry was a mad man on guitar. Between him and seeing Jimi Hendrix twice in San Diego, I got to see two of the best from that time. It pained me greatly when we lost both of them.

I feel so sorry for myself because I never got to see Terry. I was only 8 in 1978. However, when I became a Chicago fan in the mid 80's I discovered the earlier recordings and Terry Kath. My favorite Chicago "era" is the Kath years. Kath's voice and his amazing guitar playing will never be forgotten.

I. Saw Chicago in Ohio in the 70’s and they opened in a darkened arena to “little one”. I was 19 and cried at the beauty of it. Great show.
Can't believe it's been 37 years already since we lost the heart and soul of Chicago. So very, very sad.
43 now and he's still missed. David Fosetr really F'd up the band after Kath's death.

I was only 18 when I saw Chicago play in Seattle,
November 1977. I was just coming to appreciate Chicago. I was blown away by Terry Kath. Just blown away. I still remember people complaining that they took a 15 minute break. I will never forget that show. We all miss you Terry.

Of all the great guitarists...and to have Hendrix say Kath blows him away is the ultimate compliment. And well deserved. Right now, the two of them are playing in a band we'll never hear. RIP Terry, Jimmy, Stevie, Jim Croce, et al.

I saw Chicago on that final tour in Vancouver, BC. It was my very first concert, and I've seen dozens of incredible concerts since, including Elton John, McCartney, Rush, etc... But to this day, that was still the best concert I've ever seen. Kind of sad to see Chicago on the casino circuit now, but I agree with Robert Lamm in the video, Chicago really ended when Terry died. He was the heart and soul of that group. I didn't blame them for wanting to continue. But for me the final straw was when they fired Danny Seraphine. They were just a tribute act after that.

Hard to put in words..such a soulful vocal styling...can you even imagine a male trying to cover one of his sung songs? Yet unbelievable guitar wizardry. Certainly under appreciated. LOVE his ballads. RIP.
I was 'lucky' enough to be at that show. Still a fan after all these years. Terry was the greatest. The band certainly went on and did some great stuff...but it was never the same after he died. I really think he was the soul of the band. Great vid!!!
I was there. The Baby's had just canceled so went to this concert instead. It was more than I expected, didn't realize it was Terry's last show.
I had the privilege of seeing Terry play live several times, including at Carnegie Hall. Without a doubt he was the most intense guitar player I ever say. Never played a song the same way twice. And the fact that he had to work his magic in a disciplined / complex musical group setting, while singing no one else ever did that.
The first record CTA, side 4 "Liberation" is simply unreal how hot his playing and the band were.
How they went from being the most versatile rock band in the world to a blase power ballad pop band is one of life's mysteries.
My guess is the realization really depressed him and led to the drugs and the inevitable trajedy.

The cat blew me away too. So very sad. I was 12 yrs old when his tragic accident occurred. I can remember hearing about it while laying in bed trying to sleep. He is truly missed by many around the world. RIP Terry. You were an inspiration to all. Peace.

There is a great Showtime video of Terry Kath’s daughter searching for his favorite guitar. It’s the guitar in these pictures. During one of the interviews, I think it was Robert Lamm who said Terry paired with some old amp (he called them Radio Shack brand) that sometimes picked up local radio stations. I loved that they included the quote from Jimmy Hendricks. Chicago was playing a club in NY and Jimmy was playing in a different club and had stopped by to watch Chicago’s set.

All I can say is WOW! I was bout 6 whene he died & I first knew their 80's stuff. After that I startd goin back to hear the older stuff. Terry w/out a doubt had a special gift. This is a beautiful tribute.

People say Terry Kath was under-rated, I don't believe that to be true. Chicago had literally millions of fans around the world....and every one of them knew who Terry Kath was. And they all knew the power he brought to the band and, to the music that touched their lives. He was the favorite of many, and an inspiration to so many people, that he touched thru his music.

As a 10 year old I asked why? I cried on the playground and at 55 I still ask why? 😔 My father and his brothers were musicians and I was taught about talent. That man had more talent in his little finger than most people will ever have. I still miss him 😢.

I saw Terry for the last time in November 1977 at the Boston Garden. Only time I ever heard Little One live.
The sheer beauty of this tune & the genius that was Terry Kath, makes our loss, so much harder to bear. At least he left a treasure that lifts the spirit, stimulates the mind & brings back just how much good music he left us. Now THAT'S a treasure of note ! RIP Terry.
Jimi was a humble guy and again I think he was paying Terry a compliment, no matter what words he used, simply saying Terry was amazing. I think you are taking Jimi's compliment too literally and I've already mentioned the context aspect. Did you ever see Jimi interviewed such as on the Dick Cavett show? He was very "aw shucks" about his playing and being called the greatest guitar player, etc. Check it out, it might give some insight.
For the record I am a huge Terry fan and if I was forced to listen to his body of work or Jimi's, I would pick Terry's (partly because of his voice) but I hope I never have to make that choice. So I am not "defending" Jimi nor am I saying anyone was "better"...as my original point, I just think the whole Jimi-Terry thing gets blown out of proportion and context. If you disagree, I get it, and let's move on and have a nice day.
I agree 100%.. Jimi was once asked "How does it feel to be the greatest guitar player in the world?". His response was, "I don't know, you need to ask Rory Gallagher"

@@mountainchief2409 That's just not true; Jimi never said that. I've read and listened to every interview Jimi ever gave. While he was very humble the idea he said such nonsense is purely an internet invented rumor with zero substantiation. The closest such quote was when he was on Dick Cavett and Dick said "you've been called the greatest guitarist of this generation" to which Jimi said "how about I'm the greatest guitarist in this chair" while embarrassed he pointed to the chair he was sitting in. Some Roy devotee started that rumor and it even started spreading to other guitarist, such as Terry Kath's name in place of Roy's in the story. The truth is they were all great, unique and gifted players and none of the three needs urban myths to boost their legendary playing credits. Jimi liked both Roy and Terry and CTA was even asked by Jimi to tour with him as an opening act in 1969. They were good friends and they certainly didn't blab about who's the greatest. I say give Terry, and Roy, the true respect they deserve and not repeat debunked myths. Cheers P[>
The difference between Kath's physical condition at this final show and what it was just two or three years earlier is appalling. Somebody should have locked that guy in a room with limited food, water, and his Fender Telecaster until he got his act together. He never lost that smooth baritone voice though. What a tragic waste of talent and a great loss to the music world.
Robert G. I agree, and I feel that it was a portent of what was to come. There was an obvious spiral down going on, but it never affected his glorious music. Breaks my heart.
Terry was all too aware of what the drugs and alcohol were doing to him, and said "I'm going to get this under control, if I don't, this stuff is going to kill me". He knew it, but he couldn't get it under control. Drugs and alcohol didn't directly cause his death, but they played a big role in the accident, as he was under the influence when it happened.
@@chuckpotockimusic2288 the autopsy report showed zero alcohol in his system and a tiny amount of cocaine in his system. He was not wasted when he died. The was gun residue on his right temple but non on his hands. Chew on that for a while. Terry had just fired their manager because he was robbing the band blind. Terry was recording a solo album as well. It was not suicide, it was not accidental. Do some reading about Terry and the band Chicago.

I saw them one month earlier on November 1, 1977. As much as I love Chicago with the horns, and 3 lead singers, I think Terry Kath's incredible talents got lost a bit in that so many Chicago songs feature all the instruments playing at the same time. When you strip it down to the drummer and Terry's voice and guitar it is just amazing. He was humble and let everyone contribute fully, yet I think more stripped down songs would have let this incredible talent shine more fully as it should. Still, I'm grateful for what we have and recognize that Chicago was a band just loaded with talent.

Back in the day, Chicago was one of my fav. bands. I never thought about when his last show was. In Nov. of '77 Chicago made a stop in Nashville. I'm very glad they did. Listen to his voice here. So soulful. RIP Terry

Especially want to thank you for this tribute on this day, January 23rd 2008, the 30th anniversary of Terry's death. Still sad about it after all these years. Wish I could zip back there in a time machine and go running into the house, just in the nick of time. Sigh...
I can't get over it, everytime that I watch this, the energy never diminishes, its still beautiful, yet painful. What a gift from God!
The second concert I ever attended. 16 years old. But I can't remember now if it was this night or the night before. I just learned today the Oakland shows were his last. Thanks for this. Great photos.
Here's the thing: The truth is his soul never left. If his music still moves you then his soul is still here. There is nowhere else to go. He gave up the form, not life; you will too one day and you'll see you're still alive. Where can the formless reside? Here now, for there is no where else in all the universe.
What hurts are various ideas you are choosing to focus on. Cease focussing on them and choose celebratory thoughts instead. Observe how you will feel differently.

Great Video and really chilling in a way to watch knowing it's the last time Terry is on stage with them. Everybody has the guy they want to be if they could rock out. Terry was mine. Always played with passion.

A nice tribute, thank you. Chicago was never the same after him, although James William Guercio's departure had a lot to do with it as well.
They fired Guercio because he was running them into the ground with nearly continuous touring and found he was embezzling from them.
@Chuck Potocki Music Guercio wasn't embezzling any money. He just had it in his contract that he was getting 49%, and the band had to split their share 7 ways. That large sum is what bought Caribou Ranch. Danny Seraphine was the one who spotted how much he was truly making off of their hard work and brought it to the others' attention, and they fired him. It really is too bad he ran them ragged. They had their best sound with him producing

I VIVIDLY remember hearing the Double Album CTA in 1969!!@@ Was in Army at age 17.. Some of my Army Buddies came up & said "Chuck These Guys Are From YOUR Town"!! Man they NAILED it back then & yes Kath WAS to Chicago what a Spinal Column is to the Human Body....

Sorry about Terry's death but I feel a little victimized here because I got online and Googled 'UA-cam Chicago wishing you were here' and got this sad, sad video. When you're contemplating suicide this is the last thing you want to see, a story about someone who had it all and killed themself where I am a nobody with nothing and no one and still alive. Geeez - I don't feel sentimental anymore, I just feel sick at my stomach.
He killed himself accidentally. He was up for 48 hours or so high on coke and booze. So he didn't have it all and then end it all intentionally. He was going to pick up a drummer friend from Chicago the next morning at LAX. They were going to start working on his solo album.

Not sure if many know this but Terry and others Chicago members got to act in a major movie. Check out Terry Kath's small acting role in Robert Blake's Electra Glide In Blue. He plays the part of "Killer" and brandishes a shotgun as the surprise ending to the movie. Also one of his songs with him singing is played at the end.
Peter Cetera and Parazaider, the saxophonist of Chicago also play bit part hippy characters in the movie as well.
Trumpeter Lee Loughnane is in it too.

I was blessed to have been there that was in the Air Force Station to Travis Air Force Base and drove to the concert that night with my girlfriend and my best friend not every thinking it would be the last time to see him God bless him
