Thanks. This was a nice, succinct explanation.

You brought up a great point. Routing! If you want to route between two subnets at gigabit speeds you will need a powerful SMB router that support VLANs and dynamic\static routing. Perhaps you can do a future video on inter-vlan routing with a L2+ switch. I might create one myself as I am sure there are people out there wondering how.

A Ubiquiti Edgerouter 4 is perfectly adequate and very reasonably priced.

Great video, though it's probably not a route I'm going to go down (not yet anyway!). Would love a video, or links to video that compare different configurations for LANs and internet around the house. Like many, I can't always run ethernet where I want it, and wish there were real world comparisons between using a wifi router, mesh systems, powerline wifi adaptors and wifi repeaters, to see what really are the most reliable and fastest solutions. I've got a new wifi 6 router coming soon, that is also mesh compatible, so it's sort of hybrid, but I'd love to know which really is the best system to get reliable net access in every corner of the house!

Thanks Daz. I have a video where I setup and review some TP-Link powerline adapters. In that video I briefly compare the ping, download and upload speeds between the adapters, ethernet and Wi-Fi so you might want to check that out.

Would Vlan's be a good idea for Google Wifi pucks? I.e. group them together in their own Vlan? My Google wifis dont seem to be working correctly, slowing my incoming speed down tremendously. They work but seem to limp along and im wondering if it is because i have a lot of devices connected to the wifi and the network in general and so i wonder if they are all competing against each other?

I would check the Google support page instead of setting up a VLAN - it doesn't sound like they are working as they should.

As we hold on discussion about VLANS, LANS and VPN is bad with wireless network because we run away from cybercriminals hacking into WiFi connection and intercepting the data

Might want to separate IOT stuff to a vlan. Not sure.

So I just bought an ASUS RT-AX86U, but the thing isn't even hear yet when I found out the RT-AX86U Pro has VLAN support. I'm thinking about returning it and getting the Pro. Long story short, I have an asshole pseudo-brother-in-law moving in and all he does is play video games. If he was sat up in his own VLAN, if he gets DDOSed, would only hit network be affected?

@@vitaliypro8441 There are many videos that discuss this in detail, but they prevent cheap low security devices like many IOT devices from being hacked and then serving as a means to access your LAN.

One of the reasons i could thought of is when you have many IOT devices connected to your main router and occupy all addresses. I myself have several smart bulbs and have been looking for VLAN lately to group them. Not really sure it would work seamlessly though.

Wrong! VLANs are 100% worth it on any properly setup network.

I answered your question before you even began speaking in your video. The Answer is : NO! VLANs are not needed in a home network. VLANs are for Small, Medium, or Large Businesses. If VLANs were to matter in Security, all of the Routers today would have that feature.

Might have watched your video (and maybe liked it) but UA-cam wanted to force long adverts on me, so thumbs down it is.
