  • No offense to Tony the Tiger, but breakfast cereals aren’t always “GRRREAT”! In fact, many cereals and other common breakfast foods are loaded with carbs and sugar. So how can we break our fast without also spiking our blood sugar? Drs. E+P offer several diabetes-friendly breakfast ideas and easy substitutions for old favorites to get the day started off on the right foot.

I eat 80 carbs every meal daily for over 40 years as a type1. I have zero health problems and zero complications and eat every thing on your table along with what you said not to eat.

There's always an unicorn somewhere! That's not how it goes for the overwhelming majority!

As the cook of the house, and my significant other has been a type 1 diabetic for a very long time, breakfast has been a struggle for us.
A few things we have found that work very well:
Carbonaut Raisen Bread - 2 slices with a orange and her BGs after are solid.
Kodiak Powercakes - I make this into waffles and instead of using water, I substitute it with high protein milk (Joyya) and egg to mix it with the mix in the box. One waffle with some sugar free maple syrup and rock solid BGs and filling for the day.

Excellent video for everyone, not just folks with diabetes. I completely agree that breakfast traditionally tends to be heavily carb loaded.

Yep, and everyone needs to find what foods (and timing) work best for them.

Breads... my daughter and I usually get a breakfast croissant once every two weeks, with avo, tomato and cheese. She went to get our order today. I checked the carbs. Large croissant is about 20, according to my sources. She messaged me from the store. No croissants. They were giving us Turkish rolls. I Googled. 47-ish carbs per roll. I only ate half of my over-priced breakfast today. T1 and I could have bolused for it, but first thing in the morninng I just want my coffee and don't GAF about insulin.

Love your channel but got a little beef with what you just said Dr. Pettus. It’s not just society that tells us fatty foods (eggs, bacon, sausages) are bad- it’s TCOYDs videos. Any of the nutrition videos you post feature a dietician who says to limit saturated fat. Dr. Edelman interviewed a cardiologist on the podcast a few months ago who recommended a low fat mostly vegan diet for heart disease. I think it was a Ornish style diet? Plus you two have said that we need to get our LDL below 70. I’m just a layman but I have no idea how I could achieve that LDL goal and still eat bacon and eggs for breakfast even with my statin.

Thank you so much for your comment and we appreciate it very much. There's a lot of confusion in the cholesterol guidelines, and I agree with you that you do get your LDL below 70 with a statin. There are other medication's for LDL to help get there, but I have had a difficult time getting there myself taking two different cholesterol lowering medication's. Thanks so much for your comment and look forward to seeing you online! - Dr. E

People need to stop tis nonsense that breakfast has to be one of these commercially hyped up, sky high glycemic junk foods or mildly healthier choices that still are far from optimal. And by all means, let's normalize that leftovers from dinner are perfectly fine as breakfast. I've had salmon and salad for breakfast, for example, and had a FANTASTIC start of my day! And as they have wisely said, there's nothing wrong with skipping breakfast for most of us! But just eat the whole damned eggs, not that egg white crap, LOL!

Haha! Yes, it's a mindset shift to allow yourself to do what works best for you when if it's outside the "norm"!
