    The Packers' drafts take three years to evaluate. Pretty much every year, their first round selection is panned and trashed as a bad pick. And then three years later, that player is a quality starter at the least, and often a star

Only two players (Rashan Gary and Elgton Jenkins) are left from the eight players drafted in 2019. Only two players (Jordan Love and A.J. Dillon) are left from the seven players drafted in 2020. Five players (Eric Stokes, Josh Myers, Royce Newman, T.J. Slaton, and Isaiah McDuffie) are left from the 11 players drafted in 2021. I always find it interesting how people feel they can grade defensive players when a team has a new defensive coordinator and you have no idea how he plans on utilizing the talent they took. • @Python_Bacon
    @Python_Bacon 11 днів тому +1

    I’m pretty much with your assessment here. If you’re grading the process there’s a lot to criticize with the massive reaches against consensus. He basically had 4 massive reaches and on two those he sacrificed picks to trade up and then massively reach. The word I in mind for that was STUPID. That said I liked the Morgan, Cooper, Bullard, Lloyd, Oladapo, Pratt, and King picks. I hated the Hopper, Williams, Monk, and Glover picks. And when you throw the two picks used to trade up to massively reach you could say he wasted 6 picks in this draft.

  • @ninjalbatross

    A lot of people had the Packers taking Graham Barton in the first round, which I beleive you would have liked better (higher consensus ranking). Barton and Morgan have comparable measurements (RAS), both are smart and highly versatile. Obviously the Packer saw Morgan having greater potential as a true LT than Barton. Time will tell, but my belief is that the Packers got it right. They are extremely good at evaluating OL men.

  • @Bastillon
    @Bastillon 17 днів тому

    You should do more research on the Packers draft expectations and this draft will make more sense. Packers came into the draft with huge needs at OL, safety and LB and these are the positions they wanted to address with multiple picks for each.
    Why these needs and not CB? Most people thought that the Packers will address the CB room in the first place and thus mocked various corners to the Packers. However, once the players came back to the facility it turned out that everyone is healthy, including Eric Stokes, and with Stokes-Jaire, CV and Ballentine Gutekunst believes there was no need to address this position in the early rounds.
    Contrary to many of the pseudo experts, Packers have a huge need at LT. Rasheed Walker is a former 7th rounder who can be a good backup but you can't reasonable expect to compete for a championship with this guy against the likes of Nick Bosa, Hutch or Micah. Matt LaFleur said recently that Walker has a lot to work on, basically foreshadowing this pick. Thus, LT was the first and foremost hole that needed to be filled. Jordan Morgan was the best available left tackle. Graham Barton may be a better IOL but the Packers recently said that they consider Zach Tom a possible HOF center and one can assume they will move him there likely at some point. Both Packers area scout Sam Seale as well as Bill Bellichick on Pat McAfee said that there is no doubt Morgan can be a left tackle at an NFL level despite shorter arms. Graham can't play LT in the NFL (as he struggled against NFL level players in college).
    2 rounders are self explanatory. You have needs at LB and safety and you're looking for speed and versatility. Cooper and Bullard provide just that. It's likely that Bullard will play a lot of slot CB for the Packers.
    Personally, not a fan of the Lloyd pick but some people (Jeremiah, Simms and others) have him ranked as RB1. Certainly huge upside but the fumbling issues are very concerning as he's gonna play in the very cold weather. Personally I liked Jaylen Wright because of his pass pro and versatility but Lloyd is gonna be great and has higher upside if he just stops fumbling the ball.
    Hopper is the most confusing pick for the GB fans and Gutekunst said that he was the best player available on the Packers board (I assume that he meant BPA for the position the Packers were looking for). I think that this pick would make a lot more sense if we as fans had more information on Hopper's athletic testing. He skipped NFL combine testing due to injury and at his pro day wasn't 100%. Then the Packers invited him for top-30 visit and apparently Hopper did very well, including low 4.5 40y dash (as per Gutekunst press conference). We all know that Packers prioritize athletic testing over college boxscore production and Hopper looks like an athletic freak on film. There also other intruguing traits that fit very well for the Packers: Hopper is a former defensive back with top-3 QB pressures in the SEC - that is a lot of versatility which is what the Packers are looking for. They wanna be able to disguise coverages and blitzes. Also Hopper was ranked LB2 by these guys: thegridironreview.com/complete-scouting-report-of-tyron-hopper-what-you-need-to-know/ Certainly the Packers are in the minority but they clearly believe in this guy's potential and know his full athletic testing unlike us fans.
    Evan Williams is a Packer all the way. Athletic (tested as 8+ RAS, then improved some of his testing at the Oregon pro day), team captain, good locker room guy, brings versatility. He was the star of this year's senior bowl. Not only was he voted as the national team's top defensive specialist by WRs and RBs during pre-bowl practices (on a team that included Cole Bishop, Khyree Jackson, Oladapo to name a few) but also he had an interception during the senior bowl. For some reason draft experts missed this (likely negligence) and his stock did not rise further during the pre-draft process. But the NFL teams were highly impressed and it was confirmed on twitter by the director of the senior bowl that several NFL teams wanted to draft this guy in the 4th round. This is why the Packers used both their 4th and 6th rounder from the Saints to move up and select this guy before he was taken off the board. This was not a reach, Williams would not be available at 126. NFL was a lot higher on him than media and fans.
    The issue with both Hopper and Williams is they can't tackle consistently. I'm guessing the Packers bet on their improvement when they are coached better.
    Overall looking at these defensive picks it seems the Packers liked guys who can blitz and cover. Hafley will play press man, disguise coverages and blitzes and use these speedy guys to rush inexperienced but mobile QBs like Caleb and JJ. Cooper, Quay, Hopper, Bullard, Evan Williams can all cover and blitz and these young QBs won't know what the fuck is happening.

    Morgans blocking technique isn’t a flaw, it’s a feature.
    James Campen teaches a blocking technique that is different from standard. That is why arm length isn’t much of an issue and Bryan Bulaga became the best RT in the league with the same length arms.
    Morgan already uses the techniques that some people are critical off, because it lets defender into the blockers chest intentionally. Then they latch on to the defender and trap them in front. They only call holding if the defender gets outside of the frame of the blocker, but the blocker traps them square in front. They lift up on the defender to remove leverage and help anchor. It gives up some ground on a bull rush initially, but does anchor.
    Since Morgan is already using some of those techniques, he is a ready made starter for the Packers.
    He aslo wasn’t a reach according to other teams who also had him in the first round on their boards. The Packers could have traded back a couple picks at most, but then they would have risked losing Morgan.
    Draft website rankings do not mean anything. The only rankings that mean anything are the teams’.

    With Jacob’s I had assumed he was going to be the bell cow but MLF seems adamant on keeping a more split type backfield. I think Jacob’s and Lloyd get the bulk and Dillon is gonna get a good amount of snaps too. Kitan (Key-ton)

      Yeah Lafleur really likes his running back splitting carries and Dillion might not even make it past camp and get cut before the regular season starts.

      @@michaelacker1617 Given the size of Dillon's contract and overall experience on the team I don't really see any possibility of him getting cut. I know a lot of people point at the contract as a reason he might get cut, but when you're paying pennies for a competent backup RB I don't see the value in releasing him. Unless Wilson just turns a massive corner I would expect Dillon to be the 2A 2B with Lloyd.

    I doubt with Hopper's athletic traits he was drafted in the 3rd round to be a 1st or 2nd down run stopper. I think they will use him the same way the Cowboys use Parsons in their 4-3 base. He will be moved all over, to create mismatches and overloads.

    I thought they reached too much and took a lot of project players. King was a steal but Jordan Morgan pick was like why just why

    • @paulkaehn6203
      @paulkaehn6203 17 днів тому

      Why? Because left tackle is probably the most important position on a team besides QB and it is harder to get a solid left tackle than just about any position. And the Packers view him as a left tackle.
      I am not really sure who would have been a better pick at that spot. Clearly Cooper Dejean would have been a reach as he fell all the way to pick 40, and Graham Barton can't play tackle. It was a great pick.

    Consensus means nothing, all reports say that Morgan and Williams would’ve gone very soon after the packers picks and if cowboys stuck and picked he would’ve been picked there

    • @paulkaehn6203
      @paulkaehn6203 17 днів тому

      I agree to an extend, but meta analysis has shown that IN GENERAL, the further teams stray from consensus, the higher the bust rate. Doesn't mean you don't get steals like Puka Nacua here and there, but as a general rule "reaching" with regards to consensus hasn't worked out. I am not even claiming that any of Gutekunst's picks were bad in this draft, just making a small defense for the consensus board.

    See I don’t like this guy when it comes down to knowing a player , bro Jacob Monk is an absolute unit … over 3600+ snaps at RT , RG and Center . Kid lives in the weight room , bench reps shows you that having 31 reps . He has an above average RAS . This guy doesn’t know football .. he’s only use to the names that are always mentioned

    You cannot evaluate a draft based on somebody projecting where these players should go. The logic to this entire video is flawed. Let them line up in pads when games count and then evaluate.

    I think you're trying to do too much and all of your content kind of suffers as a result. A number of things you mentioned in this video were simply wrong and show you aren't very up to date on the Packers. Maybe instead of trying to do everything you could focus more on certain aspects, by releasing so much content, a bunch of it really mediocre and AI-esque, you worsen your product.

    • @josephlaeger6473
      @josephlaeger6473 18 днів тому +5

      It’s not crazy. There’s a ton of talent in that room. I don’t think there was a point in the draft where you’re adding an upgrade to the room compared to what you already have. They started out rough in 23 but they were also the youngest group in the league by far so it was kind of expected l. If you look at the play at the end of the year and how well it was across the board, there was no real reason to like anyone compared to what you have already in this draft unless you were taking in the top 10.

      The packer's recieving core, including tight ends, is so deep that even when three of our recievers were injured no teams dbs could cover them. We have had zero difficulty finding a person to throw to in the face of many injuries. Drafting a wide reciever would be completely superfluous. Not to mention Lloyd probably has the best recieving ability of any running back in the draft, and Josh Jacob's is great in the recieving game too.
