Is this moth gutted? I’m trying to pin a moth right now that’s on the large side and I’m trying to avoid doing that.

I have a question: How did you keep that hawk moth specimen in near perfect condition while it was in the dying stage of collecting?
Was it in a very large killing jar with a lot of space?

Hello mate. I catch or breed them and put them in a box in the freezer

Am i allowed to pin moths in a shape like they are in nature (Rhe triangle shape) or do I have to pin them with wings open that much?

I pinned my first moth yesterday (tiger moth)
It was far harder than any butterfly i have done. The wings were really difficult as the kept pinging back whenever i tried to move them 😂
The hind wings were thinner than tissue paper, which was even worse. It took me around 40mins

I have recently bought a moth trap and would now like to try setting a few moths but I have some questions. 1) how is the best way to kill them. 2) how long do you leave them before setting them. 3) how long do you leave them in the set position before moving them to a tray or cabinet.

i like to squeez the body on butterflies/moth until you hear a little pop and then they are ready to spread OR put the in the freezer for a few minutes they need heat to stay alive so it shouldnt take too long and lastly i usually leave them out to dry for 2 to 4 days depending on how moist they are

My best suggestion is to let them die naturally!

    • @prismoth

let them live a full life and then pin them once they naturally die

@@handsoaphighlands for many reasons I understand why you wouldn't want to be the one to kill the insects but for a lot of cases you would be the one to kill them in order to pin and case them.

    Will it rot?

As long as you preserve your specimen correctly and store it in a dry, safe environment that is free from insects that may eat it.

Was it alive?? Because looks like it is

it was most definitely dead and it most likely passed naturally

@pidgeone1929 It's like, in perfect condition though. An old moths always looks tattered.

I can tell you guys now it was definitely dead, I filmed it👍😊. There’s is no way on this planet any entomologist would pin a live insect. They have been frozen, or killed with chemicals instantly.
