Is The Most Popular Sharpening Stone On the Internet Any Good?

- Today I test out the sharp pebble sharpening stone. It doesn't seem to matter where you look for knife sharpening supplies, you won't be able to miss the ads for this thing! They are forcing it upon you! So I decided to buy one (with my own money) and test it out. Is this a good beginner sharpening stone? Is it a good stone for any purpose? Will I truly SHARP them all?

in what way is the ceramic stone be better/worse than the diamond stone? would the ceramic stone last longer due to pieces of diamond falling off the diamond stone over time?
They both have slightly different feels and grits. Both will work well for a one stone system. The diamond will be slightly more aggressive but will not last near as long as the ceramic. The ceramic is less aggressive and is slightly finer grit. If I had to start over with one id get the diamond stone.
Thank you for giving an honest review and suggesting alternatives! (Actually had the SP stone in my cart, but am now replacing it!)
@@OUTDOORS55 ok, thanks!
Thanks for the videos and I'm a beginner and been trying to learn the angels
You basically taught me how to sharpen. When I first started sharpening I learned from your older videos. Now I actually have a sharpening "business" if you could even call it that....but I sharpen knives for people around my home town.
Thank you for what you do.
I started to collect knives and im trying to learn how to sharpen knife properly. Can you include links to videos that will help me? Thank you

I bought a 400/1000 and 3000/8000 set like this and honestly it helped me learn better than when I tried my buddies DMT stone. Really helped me know when i applied too much pressure and had the wrong angle since it'll dig in a bit but nothing a stone fixer couldn't fix.
@@IsaaIbnEls anything up from around 6000 and some stropping with compound (very important step I see a lot of people miss) will give you a smooth shave. Source: I use a straight razor
All I seen recommended to me was the King Stone.
King stone is excellent for the price
@@setloh4345 The normal king stone isnt bad. But the king KDS is better, the king hyper is even better than that.
That same stone (king 1000/6000) is what I learned on. It’s a good one. I don’t use it anymore because I have others. Always brings back nostalgia.
Are the king stones better then the diamond dia-sharp bench stone he mentioned?
Late to the party, but a small suggestion:
For someone that is new to freehand sharpening, I would suggest the extra fine 1200 instead of the fine 600 as their first whetstone.
The extra fine 1200 will slow things down. "Aim small, miss small." Things may take a little longer, but your "oopes" will take longer to make, too, and be smaller 😉
The 1200 grit is a very good "working edge", refined with a touch of tooth", that you can go straight to honing afterwards 👍
I may just need to pick up one of those DMT stones to tune up my edge after the water cooled wheel sharpener I'm using.. It comes off hair shaving sharp from the water wheel but I think it's around a 300 grit finish.
I got one just like this for £15. It works great, I've sharpened 1095, d2, 30crv2 and some stainless blades. Although I use a diamond stone for reprofiling as it removes steel much faster. For general sharpening it is ideal, I tend to pull the blade rather than push so never accidentally bite into the stone.
It's actually a really good Stone I've used it once a week for two years and hardly any noticeable wear .there's a lot higher grits out there but don't understand what you would need them for that 6,000 makes it scary Sharp
It's good to have you back Alex . I'm glad you seem to be in a better place now . Hope you get over this man-flu pretty soon too . You make an excellent video , with just the right amount of humour injected into what could potentially be a stone faced serious and boring video . I look forward to the future co-labs and the rest of 2020 . Good luck sir.

I would like to see that stone tested head to head with the King KDS 1000/6000.
im tired of seeing that sharp/pebble stone every time i look on amazon for anything sharpening related, ill never be buying it. when i first saw it the price was alot lower, the more popular it got the price went up to what it is now. not really into the maintenance of water stones anyway, even though there are a ton of them that work very well. ill stick with my oil stones and diamond plates and ceramics. question: have you seen or tried the norton ascent ceramic stone? im just dying to see any review on them. cheers
Bring the dramatic intro!
As always, you know me🤷♂️😂
OUTDOORS55 I’m glad you’re here. Your sense of humor is up my alley.
Strange the DMT has bad reviews on Amazon
Hey look! Slim shady is sharpening the stones
I kinda enjoy the set up for sharpening, it's almost ceremonious soaking the stones and setting things up. That being said I won't carry water stones in the wilderness a fallkniven dc4 is plenty especially when weight is a factor. Love the video!
I used too as well. However once it basically became a job thats when it started getting old😂 Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Always appreciated!👍
@@OUTDOORS55 I can imagine that everyday would take the "magic" out of it.
Yeah, better leave that to the Japanese master sharpeners. SMH.
I can vouch for the look alike stone on Amazon (one of them at least). Works just fine. Comes with the same rubber base and useless angle guide. It will sharpen knives just fine. It is soft, but for as often as I sharpen my kitchen knives (every 2-3 months), that's just not an issue. This stone is a buy at the $20 I paid for it, but maybe not at $39. As always, sharpening your knives on a stone like this is still vastly superior to not sharpening them at all (which I shamefully did for far too long).
I agree 39 it too much. Definitely better at the under 20 price point🙂
I've been doing some research and a few people swear to me all those white/blue 1000/6000 stones are the same with different branding on the side. Basically sharper pebble or whatever is making a killing selling $20 stones for a bit less than $40 thanks to some good marketing and the internet's.
badtz maru they are the same. And they are MUCH cheaper than $20. 🙂you didnt hear it from me though😉
@@OUTDOORS55 yeah if they are selling them that low it's probably $4 bulk or something.
I got something called "Cwindy" that I assumed was the same as Sharper Pebble but much cheaper. The Chinese do the same thing with cheap camera gear and a million other things. I suppose it'll hold me while I figure out better mid-range options.
So you recommend just 1 stone? No low, medium, high grit? And strop? Beginner here
you dont really need various grits if youre just using knifes, axes, etc, and normal sharppening, also a leather belt can be use just like any other "specialty" strap.
Definitely a good idea to just diy a strop.
As a beginner who bought that stone first (identical clone), I totally agree that it's very hard to learn on. Very easy to put a big gouge in the stone if you're not careful.
Dang I wish I saw this a week ago lol
Lol likewise.
Ok, that answers the question I posed in a comment on another of your videos. That's the same brand (but different grit) as what I have. I got a 400/1000 "Sharp Pebble" carborundum wet stone for $24 on Amazon in 2022. Came with rubber holder (no wood) and flattening stone. Works, but time-consuming and messy. I'm thinking of getting a Kuromaku K0207 (1000 grit). That's all I need for kitchen knives. I don't need to shave, much less split hairs, just cut meat & veggies.
Regardless of steel names and complex stuff, this channel is entertaining so I subbed. Also knife making and sharpening is so satisfying... Or is it just me??
Great video Alex i would have passed on this stone after hearing your opinion on it. I’m still a beginner at sharpening and trying to get good at maintaining my angles. Will get the diamond stone you recommend in the future. Might pick up some strops from your store too. Great video , loved the intro too haha 👌👍
Great video, thank you!
P.S. We understand about you being sick and your voice issues...just don't let it happen again.
Lol! J/K!
So being that I don't know Jack all about sharpening, I bought a pocket knife from Amazon. Its nice and hefty, not expensive but it feels like a really quality knife. It came sharp, not hair shaving sharp but definitely not dull. My question is, if I buy that diamond stone you showed could I mess the edge up and make it dull??
Those DMT plates are a great value. They work very fast and on all steels. Great recommendation.
*You don't recommend the stone, but here is an amazon affiliate link to buy it? WTF?*
Lmao he makes money from it, why not? Sure, he literally said it sucks and probably lost out from it, but he's honest and makes videos about what he's interested in. Just like any other UA-camr who has the ability for affiliate links, he loses nothing by putting the link there.
That’s a lot of damage!
Great video! I’ve tried the syderco sharp maker and the worksharp and haven’t really had success with either. I was considering the sharp pebble stones but now I will definitely be going the DMT diamond stone route.
.....I use this exact stone for all of my knives. I’ve had it for about a year. It just works. I’m not a professional, but it allows me to stone knives. And it does it well. For the price....fuck, you can’t beat it for someone like me.
king 1000/6000 costs exactly the same or less as the sharp pebble
except its made in japan.
is a much harder stone (wont wear or dish out as much)
only takes 2 minuets to soak the 1000 side
6000 side is so dense that it doesn't need to be soaked. (just splash and sharpen)
Thanks so much for your extremely informative videos.
of the two alternatives which one would you recommend for a complete newbie for kitchen knives?
The KING 1000/6000 is probably better and it's cheaper.
👍
There is just something about whetstone sharpening I enjoy more thank dmt or ceramic
Pedantic alert: they're all whetstones. Whet just means to sharpen.
Do the diamond stone come in different grits?
The intro music made me buy 10....then I watch the video and sent them all back. :) Hope you get well soon Bro 💪😷🙏!
Can you please please please please do it a review on the $20 Norton oil Stone "Norton Course Crystalline combination Stone".

One Stone To Sharp Them All,
One Stone To Find Them,
One Stone To Bring Them All,
And In The Sharpness Bind Them.
I got a set of these stones branded differently as a gift, I think it was about 40 bucks for 2 stones. One is a 400/1000 and the other is a 3000/8000. They look exactly the same as that one and even came with those exact rubber and wood stands. I'm thinking companies are all buying from the same manufacturer and just rebranding the product.
This was in my recommendations and I got really excited because I thought it was a new video
Great video. I own three of the cheap stones, 400/1000, 2000/6000 and 5000/10000. I can say they work flawlessly. They cut very fast which means you can use less pressure and they don't wear too quick even though they are softer. The grit rating is wrong on them though, and they contain little to no polishing agents. I'd estimate roughly half the rated grit. I ordered mine direct from china and paid only £7 (US$9) per stone. For that price these stones are very good value, but I also wouldn't recommend paying what you did for one.
Hello, I understand the concepts of sharpening🤔 but can't get my hands to cooperate! 🤬 Thanks for the help, keep up the good work and keep these vids coming! Take care, be safe, "God Bless", sincerely Randy. 👍👍🙏😇👊
Thank you for both reviewing the stone and providing better options.
Hey just needed help with a quick question, do buncher blades (the saw bar part used in forestry work) any good for making knives? It’s hard as hell and I can’t find any information anywhere. Thank you for taking time to read this please get back to me :)
The bamboo base is good if you're just a kitchen user sharpening on a countertop. It raises the level of the stone and gives knuckle clearance. I use a stone holder, so to me it's just a storage place. I have used the stones, and for me, I like them a lot. They're easy to use. Background: I got into knife sharpening as a hobby, and I've blown probably $1,000 of knives and stones. I do have some expensive stones like the Chosera 3000 and the Suehiro 8000. The problem I ran into is that I'm not an expert sharpener, and right or wrong, I find the expensive stones somewhat hard to use. The Sharp Pebble stones are easy - it seems that way to me. Maybe it's because they're soaking stones, and the others are splash and go, so the "feedback" is better, somehow. My hobby collection is complete ($1,000 bucks!), and I'm using Sharp Pebble 3000 more than the Chosera 3000. A 3000 will get your kitchen knives p-l-e-n-t-y sharp enough. Be careful with sharp knives! They will cut without provocation, including your fingers! And be further warned, that with sharp knives you may want to upgrade your food supply and even do fancy stuff. My latest new stone is a Pride Abrasives combo stone, also a soaking stone. I'm finding that these well-selected less expensive stones are more fun. And I'm not sharpening 1000 knives, so a combo stone is thick enough. The Green Brick of Joy (2000 grit) gives a beautiful polish, but I keep saying to myself, "Man! This thing is hard to use! Your bevel angle has to be precise!" Maybe i"ll get good enough to understand it in months to come, but for now, I'm thinking I could have saved a lot of money with Sharp Pebble and/or Pride Abrasives. Btw, I soak in a small plastic tub with distilled water. A good quality knife is important, too, since a cheap one (supermarket from China) will lose the edge you put on it. Flatten one stone with another, and save the $140 bucks flattening plate for when you're a pro.
That cleaver music choice 🔥 🔥
Bought a Dmt diasharp 8" F. But it cost me 110$ 🙄 Norway 🇳🇴
Are you flipping the spyderco/dmt which do you prefer the dmt or the spyderco?
Is this an anti-waterstone video?
i learned to sharpen on this stone! you are so right, it really does suck. i learned the hard way that for learning fast feedback like on a diamond is key. (and the 6000 side is super dished on mine lmao)
(buys Sharppebble to sharpen, promptly dishes out)
(buys diamond plate to flatten Sharppebble)
SHHHIIIIII.....
Can you please explain feedback?
Take care and we will be here when ...
Hmm, I basically got something exactly the same, for something like... $5 USD... I think it's worth it for now. Just starting out.
Hi, great honest review but could i ask a question. Could i get away with just one DMT diamond stone or do i need different grades like the whetstones? If i can use one only which would be the best grade? Thanks
If you maintain your knife literally every time you use it, it would work.
I sharp like five knives a year. I am aware of not needing to flat out like the next five years.
Just got me the DMT diamond sharpening stone! I think I'm not using it correctly though. Instead of being left with a razor sharp knife, I end up with a fractured psyche somewhere in the 5th dimension with a bunch of kaleidoscope people trying to get me to talk with them about my vehicles extended warranty. Do you think trying a different sharpening angle would help to correct this?
1000/6000 grit stone? I wouldn't buy that if that was supposed to be my only stone. I would buy one with something in the few 100s range, like a 400/800 for example.
They actually advise you to keep the stone in the Bamboo tray with water keep it wet at all times of use and each time you flip the stone to wipe it down with lukewarm water
You do get a flattening stone with the Sharp Pebble but the time saved with the DMT fine is much more valuable IMO.
I have one with a Japanese name, things shit. It actually makes my knives worse. Diamond all the way at this point. Honestly, guided systems are 1000x better than freehand anyway.
finally, someone recommends me a product that i can trust will be great. thanks, will now look into buying the DMT fine stone! p.s the final line in your bio has a typo XD
assume for a moment that I was a youtuber, and that I asked in just the right way...what would it take for you to make a knife for me? what would it cost? who would I have to sleep with, bribe or kill? hypothetically of course =D ....or not....
thr cheap water stones on amazon are terrible. im not even sure how they have 4 to 5 star rating. they can barely be used for sharpening, and fall appart as you go. while a good quality stone makes for a razor sharp knife in a few minutes.
Would you recommend the smiths tri-hone for a beginner or any recommendations for a beginner ?
As a beginner myself I learned a lot from one of those Smith's 6 by 2 Arkansas stones on a gray plastic base. The feel and sound with mineral oil taught me a lot about what people mean by feedback. It's a medium stone and if you back off the pressure at the end you can take a knife into a good degree of sharpness. Pretty firm, doesn't dish out too fast, being that it's a real stone. And they're very economical. Another thing I've learned is you don't need a million grit levels if you learn to control and vary the pressure and use different kinds of strokes. You can get a lot out of a medium stone just with skills. That's my experience anyway.
First ive heard of this stone hahaha... how is this more popular than all of naniwa whetstones series or norton or shapton or suehiro? Hahahah still a good video
1000 grit is too fine if you have a rough edge . You would not want to go much less than 250 . If you have a badly nicked edge you would need even lower grit . .1000/6000 is okay for FINAL sharpening before the strop.NOT ALL WHETSTONES HAVE TO BE SOAKED . HE IS WRONG THERE.
In a world where your knifes edge is jacked up and only one man can fix them battling ridiculously hard carbide forming properties like one swats a fly.... his name has been whisper across the lands over time we have come to know him as............... BAM THIS IS WHERE THE SCREEN GOES DARK AND THE MOBIE BEGINS..... Lol just so everybody knows I do e that whole intro in that deep voice like every action movie beginning like it made a difference 😂 God I think I'm starting to lose my mind haha

I bought that stone as a beginner and became really proficient in about a week, then I got into higher end sharpening systems and upgraded
Excellent review...thank you.
Hey, OUTDOORS55 I own an old ass knife sharpener made by Buck, it’s called a Steel Master 137 retractable Knife Sharpener. I’ve tried to find info on it but I can’t seem to figure out what the hell it is. It’s really cool. I’ve tried sharpening stuff with it but I kinda suck at sharpening if it’s not a soap stone. Just wondering if you knew anything about it, or if I could send it to you so you could review it or something. All I know is that they are really rare nowadays.
Nice sharp video! Always cool to watch a craftsman like yourself sharp things to a hair whittling edge! This reminds me how badly I need to sharp my kitchen knives. Thanks for the inspiration!!
Yep, understood that you get what you pay for. But seems like 'ya might've tried a bit too hard to 'find fault' with sumthin' that after all, still sharpens effectively (and these days runs for less than 15 bucks on Amazon, including the strop)... all of which works just fine for the sorta 'once-a-month' sharpening folks like myself. Also after noticing that all the 'pros' seem to have a large 'platter' underneath when they sharpen, I actually like the little raised bamboo base, that helps 'confine' some of the mess.
Otherwise have still learned a lot from your vids, and hope you're feeling 'back in business' again soon... Cheers!
Bought a 1000/6000 water stone for $22. I am used to using diamond stones, so right away I noticed how "soft" the water stone was. Won't buy another. Probably get an 8000 or so diamond stone. That will make 600, 1200, 8000, and 30000 diamond stones. I should be set then.
alex, i just found your channel and have been watching as many as i can!! now i find out your from pa too?!!! wow!! awesome! im from clearfield county pa! thank you for all the great info you put out.
use the bamboo stand as a soap dish
I don't get all the strokes on water stones. You see blokes sitting there stroking for 20 minutes! Unless your knife edge is totally ruined, all you need is 4-5 strokes per side on a 5000-6000 stone, and 4-5 strokes on a 1um diamond-impregnated hard rawhide strop. But I agree with the diamond stone. Problem is, they're a bit coarse but work well enough.
Bad grammar in the manual - shitty product. Bad grammar on the BOX...
Which stones you like the best? DMT fine (for it perform as the "fine" stone/knife? how many grit do the stone has?) Or Spyderco ceramic Whet Medium Stone (for its perform a "medium" stone/knife?)
If you had to chose one Which one you like the best and if I have a choice for one only?
Boy I wish I had watched this before I got one off Amazon. Same-day delivery did not make up for the lousiness. It turned to mush and made a gritty mess all over the kitchen counter, especially as the stone doesn't fit (a few mm short on the width and length) in the bamboo holder so it flicks water and slag, moving back and forth on the base. I could only draw the knife in one direction, otherwise I'd be mashing the knife into a claggy surface (reminds me of toothpaste). The only value for $38 was the lapping stone.
I'm offended you didn't mention the king 1000/6000, such a better stone.
king 1000/6000 costs exactly the same or less as the sharp pebble
except its made in japan.

Oh well, this is the one I bought on Amazon Prime day. It was
Oh, and about 2 years ago I bought the $40 Carson Chase kit of Amazon. Primarily to sharpen wood chisels and being such an amateur at the time (still am! lol) at first it liked to drive me nuts rounding out stones. I practically used the flattening stone up within hours and had to switch to flattening on cinder blocks. So I can totally vouch for not being user friendly to sharpen several chisels. Anyways I think they’re the same stones as in this video, look remarkably similar.
I still have the kit and pulled it out to mess with it, but have been eyeballing the diamond stones but trying to get over the hump to spend the cash on them.
Still... if you're a 'beginner', you probably don't have that many knives to sharpen.
So being a 'soft' stone is not that big a deal AND it's a cheaper entry point to something you may never pursue;
And if you do pursue the 'art of sharpening', you'll have a better idea, of what you want, then.
Gack. Why didn't I see this BEFORE getting the water stone? Interesting. Great video. Thanks so much. 🙏
Nice! I got the DMT
@outdoors55 g'day, what stone would you recommend for straight razor. I have already brought one of those crap ones you reviewed lol, and I have a pocket glass stone I use to give it a little polish before stroping. Thinking the diamond fine stone would be the one, long lasting no flattening just not sure and getting tired wasting $$ lol.
If you want a water stone buy a king in my opinion. Although like you I much prefer diamond. I still use my king on occasion just because its a different sharpening experience.
I always push sharpened as well I remember you did a video saying always pull sharpen never push because it's too hard to keep the angle. Why did you say that if you never do it? Just wondering lol. We sharpen the same way but the beginners advice you gave was for a different method.was it just so noobs don't chunk out their stones?
Wish this video was out a week ago when i first found your channel and ordered a stone very similar to this. It was ~$20 not ~$40 though and 400/1000 grit without the bamboo stand. Oh well.
While you did overpay a little, the stones aren't too bad. The ratings are wrong though, the 400 is more like a gritty 200, hard to make a perfect edge with but fine for bevel correction. The 1000 side is more like 600 but is pretty decent. If you get another I would skip the middle grits they are all very similar, go right to the 5000/10000 which is more like 3000/6000, and buy direct from China for about $10. They work well for the right price.
You should have cheaked dollar tree that's where I got my first stone and they arnt bad about normal softness and decent grit for price and I've had my first one for about 5 months then i lost it rip the brand of stone was workbench I do believe
if you get a diamanrt sharpener as cheap as that, it is guaranteed to be polycrystalline diamond. If you want good and durable quality, you must choose monocrystalline diamond. And it is far more expensive to buy. There is a big difference between the two.
How is this the most popular sharpener when the Syderco Triangle Sharpmaker is the most popular ever?
Great video and information... however I do have that 1000/6000 ($12) stone and love it.. I may sharpen my knives once a year and basically cut (between 6 knives).. monthly- half a onion, two chicken breast, 5 bananas, 3 packages of strawberries, 2 pears, a zucchini and probably half a steak... I cannot see spending $50 (which I might get anyway) on another stone when I’m satisfied with the ones I have and hardly use. Truth be told... I really don’t have nothing to cut till I cook something
I have been using smith stones for years I think they are good for the money.
In my area, DMT stones are $ 120 so I got this exact white and blue whetstone for $ 50… its hard to do stuff on, everything is messy and it’s wet and it loses material… I thought I was smart
Outdoors55 I got one Just like IT even The Plastic Guide, Except it's brand is a Cali Valley.
My setup was $76.99 ,I can't use the guide on certain Knives or really any Knives like a Cali Legal Switchblade Knife. I think I will probably 5try the Stones you Recommended . I was Good at sharpening GOOD Knives since I was 13, BUT I am 50 Now and the new steels and angles set at the Factory Don't help . I have Missed up 2 Cold Steel Recon 1 trying to keep them Factory Sharp and one had a 5 1/2 Blade which is now Discontinued.. I have Watched The Carter Cutlery Vids ,not all of them but Me eyes are not that good anymore. Thanks For the Info.
