I cut my driect tv 3 weeks ago and absolutely love the roku3. I watch all my baseball games on mlb.tv with no commercials! Most of the tv shows are commercial free as well. I was paying $213/month for direct tv with internet and now i just pay $7.99ea a month for hulu and netflix. Still get all the shows my wife watches with nearly commercial free!
TWC just partnered with Roku about a week ago. If you own a Roku and also have a TWC subscription, you can have the whole kitten kaboodle streaming from your Roku box. Good bye coaxial cable and digital convertor boxes. All you need is your ID user name and your password and you are good to go. It's pretty phenomenal. I am loving it!
Hopefully consumers start going more and more towards Roku, Smart TV's, Blu-Ray players, consoles, HTPC's etc. and these greedy bastards stop getting away with charging us out our asses for a hundred channels only 5 of which we watch on regular basis. Unfortunately I see higher and higher cable internet bills in the future which are also already at a ridiculous rate atm.
I got two of these several months ago and they're awesome. There are a lot of channels on Roku that live-steam TV stations. If you only watch cable TV for the news, you could ditch that part of your cable bill altogether and just keep the Internet. With the money you save on cable TV, you could afford 4-5 subscription channels and still pay less money than you used to.
You did a great job at reviewing and describing how the product works. The video is a bit lengthy but it is very helpful for non-technology savvies like myself.
"Nostalgic Classic" that is pretty funny. I am in my 50's and when I hear someone say "Nostagic classic" I think of songs like Spencer Davis Group's Gimme Some Lovin" or James Brown's I feel good from the 60s.. I must be getting old. Great video by the way. Hooked up my Roku 3 yesterday, with the Playon app and I am having a great time with this combo! Thanks for the info.
For anyone new to the Roku world, I would recommend the Roku 3 over any other previous models mainly on it being so much faster to operate. If 'cost' is an issue and 720p only is not a bother then the LT should be a great pick for half the price. i get it on: #amzn.to/18QlVLY
Your video is great! It told me exactly what I needed to know: That the Roku 3 will work perfect for me. I need a device to watch Netflix and Amazon Instant Videos over an HDTV that has no Wii or PlayStation hooked up to it (like the TV in my bedroom). I realize that I still need to pay subscription fees for Netflix or Amazon Movies. The Roku 3 simply connects the TV to my home network via WiFi and provides a remote to navigate on screen. You also did a great job showing what's in the box. I realize I'll need a short HDMI cable. Thanks for posting!
Couldn't help but notice Ace of Base on your phone's playlist @ 11:06. Upload a video of you singing along to "I Saw The Sign". Your channel will go through the roof.
OK, I am a certified Roku fan, prefer it to Apple, and mind you, between 2010 and now, I've bought 8 (eight) Rokus from amazon. That is very good. They sale it on: #amzn.to/1fOXpAi
*Roku 3 sale off at: **amzn.to/1l8lLnY** .* What I like: - The included instructions. Setup was fast and flawless. - The user interface looks nice and it's a breeze to navigate. - Being able to move my channels around is a big plus. I can order them the way I want them. - The search feature is nothing short of amazing: you can search for content (by title or actor's name) across all your channels at once.
I have an extra laptop. It's dedicated to the TV, so it just stays put. In your case, I can see where it would be a hassle with only one laptop. We only have one TV too, so I guess that simplifies it even more. Thanks for replying.
Great helpful video. My WD Live TV was not doing much for my MKV external 'videos' so I was on the ropes about another media player. You sir, have made up my mind. Thanks! and just subbed.
Major downside for me was 1 who doesn't put a power button 2 credit card info really 3 and it doesn't have a dedicated UA-cam app Took it back the same day and bought me the netgear NeoTv for less than half price it was like $40 and I love it...
It does have a dedicated You Tube app now and no power button because it sucks such low electric use when in sleep mode. Plus it is able to always get new updates, instead of waiting to turn on. And if you call Roku support, they will set you up an account with no credit card. Near 900 channels now.
I'm planning on getting this so I won't have to buy cable...all I need is the Internet now. Great review. I gave that show I were watching a shot on Netflix (Caprica). .. I like it so far. Cool show. Hopefully iI'll get this Roku 3 soon.
dude... you are the man!!!!... you explain everything in a simple way... i was looking for the perfect solution to be in my room w/my brand new samsung tv and capable to watch everything w/o bother my brother next room... so i was looking for something like the roku 3 and i believe that is the solution for me. thank you!
Oh my goodness, since the headphones can be plugged into the remote control and then the TV is muted, I don't need to worry about disturbing my sisters's studying when watching TV..... It is so cool!!!!
WOW,thats all I can say.Great vid,you REALLY explained everything perfect. Your vids are the best.I will be getting my ROKU very soon, becouse of your vid. Thanks again and keep up the good work. Gio.
you actually can stream your iTunes library on any Roku box with a simple PLEX media setup. I use it all the time and I can stream my iTunes library on any of my Droids using my PLEX app.
Better is a relative thing, a lot of people would rather leave a device the size of the palm of their hand plugged into the TV than plugging/unplugging a laptop all the time. Especially if you're not the only one using the TV.
Wow headphones for the remote... That is what I call innovation, I'm not sure whatelse does this, but I think everything should be able to do this, like connecting headphones to your PS3/XBOX controller, or this same function for the Apple TV, etc.
thank you so much for the review, you took out all of the guesswork i had on this product, i will be purchasing this next month and was looking for a review on it,appreciate the time you took to upload :)
Do you have to log into your netflix, etc. accounts each time you start up Roku or just one time? Does it save your credentials? I want to get this for my dad who is a total noob on computer stuff. I dont want to become tech support for every day he watches TV.
This looks like something I could use to eliminate the use of my laptop as a internet head end for my VIZIO. As long as it permits all the standard social channels and movies I'd be good.
Use PLEX Media server on your PC, and the PLEX app on Roku, Android, IOS, or another PC. The Server transcodes whatever file type you have to a supported one for whatever device your using.
yea for the headphone feature alone im going to buy this.. i have my wireless sennheiser's but i wouldnt mind switching to my Bose QC 15's, or my beats by dre for possible action movies... very nice ! thanks again
Easier to control in a bedroom/entertainment room type environment, and much much cheaper than having a laptop on every TV in your house. I have been using a laptop on my livingroom tv for a while, and just got one of these for the bedroom, using PLEX i can stream any downloaded video from the laptop to the Roku easily and quickly :) Cut Cable and this pays for itself in just ONE MONTH!!!
I'm surprised that it doesn't have an optical port for surround sound, Apple TV has that along with dedicated UA-cam. Roku seems to be a good choice and I'm an all around tech guy but the optical shortage would stop me from buying one.
The trouble with Roku is that there is an INCREDIBLE amount of channels that are either local church broadcasts or really ancient B movies loaded with commercials. I don't fault the latter--cheap licensing or no copyright, after all--but the religious ones REALLY need sub-categories so viewers don't have to scroll through all the stations to find something they find appropriate. And sub-sub categories for the Christian stations.
these things are all right.... still cant get half the amount of streaming stuff available on desktop.... netflix is the best streaming source it has. by FAR..so if your buying it and netflix alone satisfies you then you will enjoy it. if your expecting it to get more stream sources then a computer your dreaming.anything that half decent on roku cost money.... ppl say there getting these box's to save on cable bill. thats only if you already have the internet! internet is damn near the same price as cable... so 120$ for roku 50-80$ a month for internet.... then 9$ for neflix and another 10$ on another stream site... its all gona add up to just as much as cable!
Who's going to put a desktop in their living room realistically? Netflix, Hulu, Pandora are all nice streaming services that get heavy use for content, but your missing the main one. Plex. Plex will stream all your media from your computer and its free. I pay $9 for Netflix, $49.99 for 60 Mbps cable internet and use an antenna for local stations. I would consider getting Hulu only b/c it always has new episodes, but my family could care less. Anything they want I just download from the internet and stream it through Plex. You can even stream blu ray movies which is HUGE. So I'm pretty content with our setup costing roughly $60 a month. The real cons are having to buy sports packages which do stream on the Roku and having to have a box in each room. Even with that in mind I still find it cheaper than paying for shit cable channels with commercials.
kiker0909 i run a desktop in my living room! only reason you would know is because of my wireless key board and mouse might be out..desktops only require an hdmi so theres no more cords then normal. most people have entertainment unit housing there stereo , tv box, dvd player ect. take away dvd player tv box ect and replace with a desktop! you can get bad ass fancy looking desktops for decent prices . i paid around 700$ to have mine made and iv had it for 2 years and i get basically ANY tv show and movie for free .this device is only cheaper if you dont have a computer but you already have internet! who the hell has the internet but no computer??? lol . if you dont have a computer or internet. this would save money buying this . but its still peanuts compared to running a desktop
Im just saying in general. In many family homes you wont find a desktop computer in the living room. TRUST ME I understand the reason and need for basically a home media center, but it's not the norm as of yet. People will make the transition in time but for now the Roku box serves its purpose.
kiker0909 in general they dont have them no. but now a days more and more ppl are. why not start. you going to have this roku box and a your modem and everything else in your living room. at least they make stylish desktops. modems and d links are hideous. trust you??? lol why would you be any different other then not knowing how to use a computer? i havnt had cable service in 9 years and im 29 years old. ive converted many ppl into internet box but that only because they lack basic computer skills. running a desktop and laptop to your tv is what the real tv streaming ppl are doing... they dont screw around with little machines like roku that cant do half the amount of streaming a computer can. it doesnt even have web browser! if it had web browser it would be a different story. roku does serve it purpose which is serving a dumb down version of a computer for users thats cant stream on computer
Can you stream files from your PC to the Roku over wifi and access them on your screen similarly to the PS3 Media Server? (without plugging in the external hard drive)
The Sony remote looks great, and web browsing is certainly attractive. Does the Sony have the same or better depth of channel support as Roku 3? I can't seem to find a list on their web site.
I cut my driect tv 3 weeks ago and absolutely love the roku3. I watch all my baseball games on mlb.tv with no commercials! Most of the tv shows are commercial free as well. This is the most comprehensive review that I have seen for the Roku 3. Thank you SO MUCH for uploading!
Man I *LOVE* Roku products - so slick and simple to use, such GORGEOUS shapes, colours and material finishes. God bless Roku :)
I agree with you!!!

Great review. You answered all of my questions/concerns. Great voice and presentation.

Cannot believe how small the roku is. Thanks for the review.
Best break down of what it offers I have seen so far
It warms my heart that an underdog in the industry is leading the noble innovation efforts in streaming. Google & Apple can learn a thing or two.
no hdmi included must enter cc informaion before u use netflix or natythign

Nothing wrong with a little Ace of Base. It's always a good idea to keep a few nostalgic classics in your music library.

I'm canceling cable TV and going get a roku soon. I am excited to see UA-cam and Netflix on my screen TV and not on my phone anymore .

I think the headphone jack on the remote is the coolest feature.

you should make different vida for review, unboxing, setup, etc. or mark the times on the vid in the description

Awesome! I'm surprised about the speed of this device because my Apple TV (720p) takes a while to achieve optimal quality.

no

Good review. I plan on picking up one of these later this year, when I get the cash.
