Hey Steve, I get your concerns and I think what designjoy is offering is not actually unlimited designs. In their website they're making it clear that every design request takes 2 days, so at best you can ask for 15 designs per month. So instead of saying:" up to 15 designs per month" they're telling customers unlimited which is more attractive and converts more. I'd love to hear what you think about it.

These services by nature is for SME business owners who doesn't have huge budget but need the job done. Usually no businesses need 300 designs in a month other than multinational brands. So they are using the unlimited design similar way the buffet says unlimited food in 3 hour window.

Hi Mohsen! Yeah, I understand your point. But WOW is their service expensive for 15 designs a month! So in my mind, even that is false advertising that leads to mismatched client expectations.
Idk, I'm sure this model can work for people. No doubting that. But it seems like a relationship with clearer boundaries and expectations makes more sense, at least in the world of website design.

On top of these he clearly states on his website that he will only work on one request at a time. You can give him however much requests in one month, but the restriction is, one request at a time and if the revisions are unlimited, that’s in your favor because that bleeding into the next month. 30 designs for 10,000 in 2 months. Sounds like a deal.

Such an interesting topic. Loved this video.
I agree with you entirely. I feel you could never manage customer expectations with this business model. It would only set your client and yourself up for a massive fall. However, and this is a huge however. What if you started learning design 3 years ago. Became pretty much an expert in web and graphic design, but never invested the right time in marketing yourself. Suddenly, this option becomes a lot more endearing to a struggling new designer. The temptation to use this business model to possibly kickstart your journey. By doing this you really are making premium design available to the 'little guys'. But, as you mentioned, at what cost? Do they honestly get what they expected? Do they get what you know can move their business forward? Do you deliver a service worthy of success for both you and client? Again I'm not sure this can be accomplished. But I think I might still try. As at this point, I love design, have ZERO clients, and simply, have nothing to lose!

Hey there! Appreciate your thoughtfulness and consideration on this topic. Yes, I agree there may be times when a radical model like this could come in handy. I don't think that you've grasped the logistics that make the model work.
Designs are requested in a queue and completed one at a time, with a turnaround time of around 2-3 days depending on the size.

The fact that Brett created a one man 1M business just blows all the doubters out the water. When/if he decides to create a team I assume turnaround times, work quality etc will be improved, if that is currently a problem. I agree. Saying unlimited and we only have 24 hrs in a day where one works only 20 days a month, not counting the weekends. If you were to ask for revisions every 2 days that puts you conservatively only at 8-10 a month, not unlimited. I would definitely stay away from this. DesignJoy is capitalising on very specific things. Its a freelance retainer model. It won’t work for everyone. His ability to turn fast good designs around, getting clients, communicating and picking clients very very carefully so none of them are too needy or niche. Most will be fairly generic and have basic needs. It’s a novel take on being a freelancer for a few who have those management skills and the willingness to work like a service robot.

I don’t see how this is supposed to be convincing. “Gets dicey”, “unlimited everything”, you aren’t substantiating your claims against or for what you’re suggesting. Even worse, several of your claims misrepresent design joy. It’s not everything and his first listed feature is actually a pace making limitation:
    “One request at a time
    Unlimited brands
    Unlimited users
    Unlimited stock photos via Shutterstock
    Easy credit-card payments
    Pause or cancel anytime”

Hey Otis, first of all thank you for your comment. I appreciate and welcome all perspectives. I went back and listened to the entire episode I recorded after reading your comment, and am willing to change my mind or be shown wrong. I even caveated at the very beginning that I was not going to go too deep into the situation because I don’t like to throw people under the bus, and I didn’t have all the information anyway.
It’s my job to make sure my students know where I stand on issues like this, and I believe I was able to clearly articulate a few issues with offering unlimited plans like this. Further, regardless of how the details shake out, there are many on the Internet who have anecdotally expressed problems based on their experience with the company, and the credit missed expectations around the unlimited model (among other things) for their trouble. But again, for me, this was never about “why DesignJoy is bad” but rather “why I would not choose their model, and choose another option instead.”
Hope that clarification helps a bit, and I thank you again for your comment.

IMO Its a flawed business model. Either he's outsourcing all his work to cheap designers or hes using basic templates, so either way quality of work would be lower, Also if clients have the freedom to run around like toddlers with crayons with regards to their businesses and brand building its doomed from the outset. A desigjers job more than pretty pictures is as custodian to their clients brands. If you are dealing with 20 clients simulatanoiusly you won't have time to do actual work, let alone in any quick turn around. And 5k is a chunk of change for most clients I know. Design services should be seen as a business partnership with clients not a simple service delivery. I have an idea how DJ runs his business and as a customer I'd be a little nervous using their services.

Meaning the client can't submit another request until the current request is complete. So this would be a max or ~15 requests per month, but he says most client's request less often, and some request far less. This is how he is able to work 8 hour days and still service 20-ish clients.
