A couple of quick and inexpensive tips:
1.) Forget the seat. Just use a long waterproof stuff sack. You can straddle it when it is long ways, and you can sit on it when it is across the boat.. Plus you can move it forward and backwards to sit in different locations of the boat. Just be sure to tie the bag to the boat in case it flips.
2.) Get some sort of flotation in the bow or stern. (A cheap inflatable beach ball will even do.) If you do tip over, the boat won't fill completely with water.
3.) Bring a bucket or a pump! If your boat does flip, take on water or even a heavy rain, you will have a way to empty it without going to shore to dump it out. Don't forget to tie it to the boat though. I use an empty 2 liter plastic bleach bottle with the lid on and the bottom cut out. It makes a really simple bailing system.
I made a 6 meter sailing trimaran out of marine plywood not long ago. It took quite a bit longer than your project, but I really enjoyed building and using the boat.

I can confirm the bottle lol, i used that to remove sooooo much water from boats lol. Memories lol

      @wisenber 2 роки тому +6

@@CyberBeep_kenshi An old plastic bottle with a handle will work as well or better than most things you can buy. When there's a lot of water, it works better than most kayak bilge pumps. A sponge or rag is needed beyond that.
I hit a 2 meter wave with my trimaran that dumped about 30 liters of seawater in my lap. The bottle really helped.

@@FelixImmler Sometimes cheap and simple actually works better.
Do have a way to keep your boat from filling up. It's all fun and games until you see the top of your boat barely above water.

And now a name- every boat has a name. A double-end paddle adds to speed and maneuverability. And safety strings tied to everything so you don't lose anything when it tips over. It seemed to handle very well- good job!

Good video. For your first time building a canoe, it's not bad at all. It can be seen that stability is not one of its strengths but everything can be improved. That is given by experience. As for buoyancy, it could also be improved with a lighter wood. But the most important thing is the fun of having built it and having a good time sailing with it accompanied by a good friend. Thanks, Felix. We look forward to the next video. 👍😉

You don't need outriggers, you don't need a bigger seat, you don't need a double bladed paddle. What you do need is somone with excellent skills and experience to show you paddling techniques and the principles of rigging your canoe. I wish I was with you and Taro on your maiden voyage just to share your enthusiasm. I started canoeing in the 50's with my dad. In my middle years I decided it would be fun to take an old canoe and run some whitewater rivers and soon learned that I needed professional instruction. It was so revealing and uplifting that I have devoted the last 40 years of my life to canoeing. Many other folks have too. Here are a couple of tips that worked for me.
    1. If you kneel in the canoe it becomes very stable. By taking something like a 2x4 or a 1x6 board and affix it like a thwart across the gunwhales about a foot or so behind the mid-point of the canoe and a few inches below the gunwhales you can sit on it (more comfortably if you tilt it toward the front of the boat slightly) so that when you sit & kneel at the same time your knees are at or just behind the mid-point and your butt is on the seat-thwart. This is the best stability position you'll have. On the flats when your knees get tired you can still sit on the seat-thwart so don't tilt it too much.
    2. Learn the basic strokes and execute them well. Foward strokes, back strokes, draw stroke, pry stroke, braces, and the turning strokes are a great start and all you need for lakes and easy rivers. Remember forward and back stroke should run parallel to the keel line of the boat not an arc but straight. To do that your paddle needs to be upright during the stroke which is difficult to learn to do because the hand over the handle of the canoe will be above your head at the beginning of strokes. If you need, it is best to add a little correction at either the beginning or the end of the stroke but not in the middle of the stroke. Draw strokes and pry strokes can help the boat turn or adjust your direction of paddle. The high brace and the low brace help keep the boat upright and dry when tipping over but they take a lot more practice to perfect and PLEASE don't be afraid to flip and or get wet, it's part of learning to canoe.
    3. Figuring out where to put your seat-thwart and knee pads for proper balance of the boat and the ideal placement for maximum control (turning power and speed going straight) should be done on flatwater for best results. You might have to move your already installed rear center thwart some. You can also glue in some rope/strap D-ring retainers on the floor to keep gear on the bottom of the canoe even when flipped, again for better stability.
Felix, there is so much more you can do with your canoe but these are the basics to get you started comfortably and in total control. Practice makes perfect. I wish I was there. Happy paddling!

Keep the thick bottom, add a small keel, make the side hslf the current thickness, add 4 smaller outriggers, use those oblong plastic/rubber things that bigger boats has as protection between the hull and the dock. Just mount them an inch above the water when the canoe is fully laden, then they will not be always dragging in the water, just to stabilise . Fun project.

Absolutely awesome, well done. So glade it was water tight and you didn’t get wet. I hope to see more videos of this with more improvements/upgrades. It cut through the water very nicely. Well done Felix.

Wunderbar! Leave the little canoe as is and build a second one with the changes. Definitely try a kayak double paddle. A splendid trial for a unique and fun water craft. 👍 😃

Hi Felix and Taro,☺ well done Felix, although I think you will make improvements to tell canoe, I would call it a success. The river looked very peaceful, and the camp fire and sausages would have been a perfect ending to your adventure, thanks for taking us along, stay safe guys, best wishe's to all, Stuart uk.

I'm very impressed in many ways! The cost and simplicity, because we all want to do builds like this, but cost and simplicity are usually the biggest problems. The absence of any leaks whatsoever! Simple DIY boat projects usually have big problems with leaks. I agree with you trying the seat. Everyone is different, but I agree with some of the comments that sitting on some sort of bag works great. The weight is kind of heavy, but you also fixed it with your ingenious wheel system.
I really like the videos you make, the things you build, and most of all, the way you think, solve your problems, and explain everything. Keep it up Felix!

So glad it worked thats awesome, the narrowness of the canoe was my first thought. It's going to be a bit tippy, also real fast thats the trade off. Narrow for speed, wide for comfort. Well done, I'm building a canoe this winter.

    Hallo Felix,
