  • Super awesome retro bowling alley located in Hartford, WI. Lanes were hooking quite a bit, but were still playable. Great lanes, friendly people, good service! Check it out!

This is a very nice looking house! I've always hoped of visiting an old-school house like this sometime, theres just something about it that is super cozy seeming. Its a shame they had the advertisements over the sweeps, but the oldschool deck shields are super cool as well. I also love that they were playing Avenged Sevenfold music lol. Nice bowling and great video!

They also sped up the cycle time. A machines were really slow.
Brunswick knew how to build them. Look at those bench seats. They are original.

The house I grew up in (well one of them), Mel's Bowl in Redwood City CA, had these same deck shields, and I'm pretty sure they were Model A's as well, not A2's. They had some kind of conversion done because they didn't do the late rake drop and were generally as fast as A2's. Good times.

Original Model As, they were meant to react quick on 2nd ball, but modified to wait for a few seconds

The time delay in the original Model A's was a cylinder built into the main gearbox casting. Inside was a brass/bronze insert with grooves in which a stainless shaft would raise up or down. The shaft was connected to the clutch engagement arm which was also under spring tension when disengaged. There were a series of o rings sealing any gearbox oil from leaking out between the brass/bronze insert and the stainless shaft. The whole thing acted like a dashpot controlled by oil flow. When the machine was triggered the tension on the spring would want to move the shaft down further into the insert until the machine triggered. There was a special bolt machined to resemble a needle point which controlled the oil flow through the dashpot and could be adjusted in or out to give you the 3 second time delay which back then was what the ABC specs called for. It was then locked in place with a jam nut. The issue with this setup was if the gearbox leaked oil (which was very common) then your time delay eventually got less and less and you lost the ability to adjust it once the oil got below a certain level. If I remember right the spec was 3 seconds from the time the ball contacted any pin before the machine was to make contact with any pins left standing or sweep them away. This was done in order to achieve a consistent time for pin action to occur before any interference with the pinsetter.

It's a Jet Back!!!! With delay gears on the pinsetter. That house is in great shape.

Maybe, the ball return might have those accelerator wheels

I learnt from Garage Bowling Alley's "How does a Brunswick pinsetter start a cycle?" video at 5:47 that on original As these's a needle valve in the 4:1 which adjusts the time delay.
Might be at a strange adjustment in this house.

It is a partially converted A. I say partially because it has the A2 rake shotgun system but it still runs with over travel as an A.

Thats my thoughts aswell or they have the Zot shotgun for the a's

    • @brunswicka2

Zot conversion. Overtravel only worked when the reset button was pushed. The zot triggering controlled the other cycles where the ball was involved.

Could be using the original Jet Back cable triggering setup instead of electronic time delay module like an A2 would have. You could upgrade the Jet Back package to those also but they were pricey.

It's an A. If it was converted, there would be some sort of accelerator for the ball coming back, but it looks like normal gravity flow. Glad you got the left lane because I'd be kicking the ball return on the right. Also, your request is the next two uploads.

Converted Jetback sets! It contains additional timing gears for the rake and pinsetter unit.

That's a new one on me. At first I was going to say Model A converted to A-2 but running at 'A' speed and without the A-2's ball accelerator belt. But when you pushed the reset button on Second Ball, and it reacted like an 'original' Model A (no delay after descending), that threw me for a loop. I have never seen this ability before - acting differently on Second Ball with a thrown ball vs. reset button.

I would guess that these machines have zot triggering which has a time delay on built into and a quick drop rake, however the reset is wored still right into the machine hence the overtravel.

    • @robertmiller9207
      @robertmiller9207 7 місяців тому

See my note above on Model A time delay. On 2nd ball the machine did what was called a 90 degree overtravel. This was done to speed up the time to set a new rack. Instead of starting its cycle at 0 degrees the gearbox would rotate another 90 degrees without dropping either the deck or the rake. This was done via a series of levers, latches and cams on the gearbox. If the machine was triggered via a ball then the time delay system would not allow it to trigger before 3 seconds from the ball hitting any pin which is why the rake was slower to come down. If it was triggered by reset button it would engage the clutch sooner so the rake would drop sooner. This was kind of a bit of a quirk built into the machine but didn't effect anything regarding rules or specs since no ball was delivered.

ive allways wanted to bowl on wooden lanes but the last place that had them in my area was torn down

From the way they run these machines they have the A2/ jetback cushion setup with the 90 degree overtravel. Im assuming this was added to prevent deadwood or some other reason. They seem to have the A kickbacks. Would be interesting to see how they have this set up.
