I remember watching this when it first aired and being transfixed by Goodfellas. I saw it not long after, and it became one of my favorite movies of all time. Rest in Peace Gene & Roger
Agreed. It took horrible people who were career criminals and made them cool enough you wanted to watch a movie about them. Henry Hill sold drugs and stole from tractor trailers and corrupted college students with the famous point shaving case and yet actor Ray Liotta made him charming and funny. He was a crook and drug addict. Goodfellas was a masterful work of art as a movie.
NO doubt about that- a good family friend & I (who worked at the Copa at that time) were supposed to be in it, but alas, we ended up on the cutting-room floor :(
God, this episode brings back so many memories. I was just starting my job with two years under my belt. I used to travel in my job and watch Siskel and Ebert on the road and at home. I appreciated their passion for films. I miss their love of film and their yearning for the warmth of the arts.
Being English I never saw this when it was first shown and didn't even know who Siskel and Ebert were until well into the 2000s but somehow this is very nostalgic to me. Especially the opening credits, it's so terrible I know I'd have loved it being 11 year old watching it then
Well we would then need movies like that today …. The critical drinker - a UA-cam channel with a handsome Irish Lad, you might find entertaining …. Yet not comparing the two
@@ianmillerdevilsfan1223 whatever it was a suggestion to some one else. I don’t follow him as deeply as you do …. obviously. Sometimes I tune in to see what he says about a film I might have some interest in
@@nadagabri5783 Yeah, also Collative Learning (Rob Ager) does some top tier film analysis over on his channel. - And the young chap, Cinema Tyler does some GREAT film essays over on his channel too, really impressive for his age - there IS good movie-related stuff on YT 👍
"It might be time for the Academy to finally recognize that Scorsese is in the film industry and made the best film of the 70s, 80s, and 1990...it'll probably go to some tiny do-good picture" "Well it may be Dances with Wolves" Man, did they NAIL that analysis...
I still say _Star Wars_ was the movie of a generation, beating _The Godfather Pt 1_ and _Pt 2,_ and definitely _Taxi Driver._ Also I haven't seen _Raging Bull,_ so did I miss the best movie of the 1980s? I don't think so; _The Empire Strikes Back_ was the best sequel of all time (before Avengers: Endgame).
@@sandal_thong8631 Scorsese didn't do the Godfather 1 and 2. Star wars would probably be one of those movies Scorsese is absolutely agiants alongside Superhero movies. You just have a different taste.
@@KRhetor Naw, Empire and Endgame are really great at doing what their particular genres do (But I'd take Taxi Driver / Goodfellas / Dances with Wolves any day myself - especially the full 4hour cut of Wolves, that finally got released years later, it really is legit masterful movie-making) - I actually think Coppola's The Conversation (1974) is his second best 70s flick (after Apocalypse Now fron '79) - I appreciate The Godfather duo, of course who doesn't, but I don't LOVE 'em. - Don't get too grouchy in your old age, fella! (goodness knows I recognize the temptation to, but there's still GREAT movies being made....Like The Holdovers (2023) for instance - is as good / funny & moving as anything from back in the day imo. Dances With Wolves is still pretty memorable. But agree with the others. Definitely think they were on to something complaining about the lack of quality movies that year.
Goodfellas was good, but it was a certain kind of movie. Some guys don't like more tender films such as Awakenings, Dances With Wolves... which is fine, but if you don't like or remember any of these other movies, I dunno what to tell ya.
Reversal of Fortune.... WOW!! I don't think Jeremy Irons has ever given a better performance. No, that's not actually true- he has NEVER given a bad performance in any film he has been in; and I LOVE his voice- I could listen to him for hours. I mean, he could just recite the alphabet & I'd still be mesmorized! Am I the only one who feels that way? There is just something SO sexy about him.... YUM!!!
'The Grifters' is truly what they call underrated. I guess it never found an audience. Even here, Ebert barely says anything about the actual film, much less do we get a clip. It's in my personal top 10, and I haven't found it any less enthralling in the 30+ years I've been rewatching it. Atmosphere for days and a hard-boiled story with great performances from everybody, including all the character actors.
The Grifters had that throwback, "noir" feel without being a put-on or mimicking a bygone era. I'll never forget Cusack flashing a $20 bill, then paying with a $5, then taking change from the $20, what a scene.
@@steveprice2718 opinions can't be "right" or "wrong". If you don't understand that simple concept, you are not a better critic than either one of them.

Because they knew how the conservative Oscar voters thought and how they would likely vote. The Oscars belatedly woke up and gave Martin Scorsese the Oscar for Best Director for The Departed.. but that wasnt an original movie and it wasn't his best. He really should have got it for Goodfellas when he was at his peak.
@@hv3115 I agree, Marty got screwed two times, he should've won for Goodfellas which was a far better movie compared to Dances with Wolves and Raging Bull losing to Ordinary People was even a bigger crime.
To say I'm shocked die hard 2 was pretty high on siskels list is an understatement. That's almost as pleasing as under siege being on his top ten 2 years later.
Gene: "it was not a great year for films" (1990) 20:35 IF he only knew how horrible Hollywood has been the last 10 years he should be lucky to be in a year with at least 10 classics..
It's funny, I consider 1990 the best year for movies ever. I count no less than 39 "watchable" movies. I was always an Ebert guy anyway. Siskel was often wrong. Taking Care of Business and Men At Work are two of my all time favorite cult comedies. To Gene's credit though, 1990 was the first year of mass sequels. That's not that bad of a thing though because we got Terminator 2 in 1991.
@@aarondavis8943 Did I say there were NO good movies the last ten years? Going from years with MULTIPLE classic movies to being rare to find one great movie a year is bad. Tell me what great CLASSICS you think from the last 10 years.
Well, they and others have been complaining about such things for at least as long as I have lived. So, I am not sure about that. There will always be ups and downs. Before you ask, no, off the top of my head I can't name a number of great movies from the last 10 years but I probably do not watch enough new movies for that. I might bw wrong, but I sometimes think that the big commercial movies make too much noise and might therefore give the impression that only that kind of movie gets mostly released these days. I had that impression for some time and lost interest in new movies for some time. Edit: That being said, I'd still like to hear their opinion on today's movies 😉
Goodfellas and Monsieur Hire are easily my two favourites of 1990. Once again Ebert nails the list. I don't always agree with his full top 10, but I always seem to agree with his top 2 or 3.

@@ianmillerdevilsfan1223 sorry I meant Hollywood films. You are correct I know nothing of non-US film and I should probably start watching more of that. Hollywood produced several masterpieces each year throughout the 70s/80s/90s/2000s. Not anymore
Both Dunes, Oppenheimer, Nope, Everything Everywhere, Top Gun Maverick for something more fun, Killers of the Flower Moon (Marty is still working), Honor Among Thieves and Barbie. All American films with big budgets. It's never been a better time for movies, even if you refuse to watch new movies like a Luddite, we've never had more access to old movies
I went to the movies to see Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles over a dozen times that summer. Two-dollar matinee, moms would just drop the four of us off at the theater and bounce.
I remember having it on VHS. If I recall correctly, there was this long "commercial" before the movie started. It was that Peter, Paul, and Mary song Out Where the Dandelions Grow. I wanna say the commercial was for Pizza Hut? Good stuff.
Gene believed that 1990 was one of the weakest years for movies. His only other favorites that year (outside of his Top 10) were "The Grifters", "The Cook, The Thief, His Wife & Her Lover", "Monsieur HIre" and "Miller's Crossing". I believe that the passing of Siskel and Ebert has made way, in the last 15 years, to a no-holds-bar inundation of some of the LAZIEST, ADOLESCENT, MEDIOCRE MOVIES pandering to audiences. The flood gates are wide open because there are no gatekeepers. Siskel and Ebert called people on their BS. Many Film critics are absolutely unqualified now. They are at best, online blogger geeks who obsess over comic books / graphic novels, pop culture and television shtick. In terms of making actual art, the accessibility to movies as an influence is like never before. But the horror of that is that filmmakers are making mere simulacrum not movies, especially "INDEPENDENT FILMMAKERS." There are very few original, unique voices with something actual to say. And let's not even mention how the rise of streaming television series has added to these issues where it's not even stories anymore, it's called "content."
Agree with you on cinema being called "content". Don't agree with you on movies being worse now considering many fascinating pictures have came by in the last five years.
@@avanishdutta2658 DAMIEN CHAZELLE, has been fooling people with his bland, milquetoast, POS movies. Marvel movies, and first time, female, American "indie directors," that are only making films because they're checking boxes.
That, and if your lead actor is black or gay… You are a racist or homophobic if you don’t like the movie. People can’t accept a movie can be bad, regardless of the lead. May they be black, white, gay, straight, a bad movie is simply a bad movie, but Critics can’t be honest anymore because if they are, they’ll risk losing their jobs.

I revisited it recently, it doesn't hold up as well as other films from this year. Good Fellas for one makes it look like a Hallmark movie of the week. Is it good, yes very much so, masterpiece, not by a long shot.
He was never afraid to reevaluate how he felt about certain films. Not many critics would willingly contradict themselves like that. You gotta respect that.
@@rae0993Same thing with Goodfellas. He said it was Marty's best film when it was released but when he did his final top 10, the only Scorsese film he had on his list was Raging Bull.

When these guys say “ it was not a great year for films” for the year that the grifters, dances with wolves, and goodfellas came out, i can only wonder what they would make of the last 20 years of movies.
Exactly my thought. My God, i would do anything to get this quality of movies today. Now it's mostly superhero CGI garbage and continuous sequels, remakes and reboots with very few original films made for adults.
Dances of Wolves is my favorite movie ever however, the top movies for me that year has to be a tie with Goodfellas and Dances with wolves , they both are some of the best in their genre.
13:55 - Yet by November of 1989, Gene had already overridden this opinion by placing Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988) on his list of the Best Films of the 1980s but not including The Last Temptation Of Christ (1988).

It is funny to read comments especially when people weigh in complaining about Goodfellas featuring toxic masculinity as if everyone is ready for a diverse musical about gangsters featuring a group of social influencers. That said if Millers Crossing is not on your list and Dances with Wolves is ...... well I guess you also think The White Ltous season 2 was edgy and were surprised by the ending ( and I usually like Mike White) . Sarcasm aside it is nice to look back and see that they were right about films like Mountains Over the Moon, The Grifters and Monsieur Hire and I do recall that I was stunned by the power and brutality of Last Exit to Brooklyn . I could not help but go back to check to see what Asian films were released in 1990 which left me surprised that they did not mention JuoDou. For those who have not seen the 2002 film "Narc" it is worthwhile if only because it was the film in which both Ray Liotta and Jason Partic ( After Dark, My Sweet) effectively resurrected their reputations as serious actors.
How did they miss Misery the best Stephen King adaption smh that's why I was so happy to learn Kathy won Oscar she couldn't be denied smh......love these 2 but horror films still have that doubt on people they deserve respect

reversal of fortune is one of those interesting movies that may be a pre- lion king Jeremy irons performance same as like How the Freshman with Matthew broderick works cause it is acts Like city slickers but from the mob perspective ,
There were more great movies in 1990 than the last 10 years of films. Goodfellas Dances with Wolves Jacobs's Ladder Misery Edward Scisssorhands Freshman Ghost I could go on of still very watchable films.

They're perfectly right about Pesci's "Oh no!" moment. That man was born to be a star.
I remember watching this when it first aired and being transfixed by Goodfellas. I saw it not long after, and it became one of my favorite movies of all time. Rest in Peace Gene & Roger
Good fellas was clearly the best movie of 1990 & it still holds up
NO doubt about that- a good family friend & I (who worked at the Copa at that time) were supposed to be in it, but alas, we ended up on the cutting-room floor :(
Dances with wolves is way better
Misery was a very close 2nd, can’t believe it didnt make either of their lists.
I don't think I saw it. But every year people watch _Home Alone_ around Christmas, so that's got to be number 2 if not number 1.
I really miss Siskel and Ebert. Had the great pleasure of discovering them early as a young lad.
They certainly hold a special place, a little like Bob Ross with painting!
Siskel and Ebert were as interesting and engrossing as the films they reviewed, often more so. I wish they were still around
Goodfellas swept away the another movies of 1990, and there were big gems that year
I Miss these guys a lot these was the good old days film critics
wtf...
Now it’s entitled boys complaining about the actresses looks or the costumes of the characters......for 45 minutes!
This was a great year for movies.
Especially the opening credits, it's so terrible I know I'd have loved it being 11 year old watching it then
We need movie critics like that today. I really miss them.

Ebert nailed it in the last five mins. Boom
"It might be time for the Academy to finally recognize that Scorsese is in the film industry and made the best film of the 70s, 80s, and 1990...it'll probably go to some tiny do-good picture"
"Well it may be Dances with Wolves"
Man, did they NAIL that analysis...
@@sandal_thong8631 Spoken like a true cultural illiterate.

@@KRhetor Naw, Empire and Endgame are really great at doing what their particular genres do (But I'd take Taxi Driver / Goodfellas / Dances with Wolves any day myself - especially the full 4hour cut of Wolves, that finally got released years later, it really is legit masterful movie-making)
- I actually think Coppola's The Conversation (1974) is his second best 70s flick (after Apocalypse Now fron '79) - I appreciate The Godfather duo, of course who doesn't, but I don't LOVE 'em.
- Don't get too grouchy in your old age, fella!
(goodness knows I recognize the temptation to, but there's still GREAT movies being made....Like The Holdovers (2023) for instance - is as good / funny & moving as anything from back in the day imo. Also The Nice Guys from 2018ish is AWESOME classic buddy cop hilarity!)

Not really. Just rerun more on basic cable by mindless programmers.
@@steveconn oooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!
"You Have No Idea" -Jeremy Irons's famous line also heard in The Lion King 😆
Yeah, and don't forget Stewie, basically Irons from that movie and Dangerous Liasons.
Good catch!
Two smart people talking. It's all you need for good TV.
I agree 👍🏾.
Huge fan of this show,
Reversal of Fortune.... YUM!!!
After Dark My Sweet is a masterpiece. Good call, Gene!
"You had to be members of the Chicago's Press Union. It was real greasy popcorn sh*t. We couldn't do anything, it was amongst the critics"
Agreed. Brilliant, twisted noir.
The Grifters had that throwback, "noir" feel without being a put-on or mimicking a bygone era. I'll never forget Cusack flashing a $20 bill, then paying with a $5, then taking change from the $20, what a scene.
Millers Crossing should be in there. 1990 was an amazing year for Gangster Movies, Millers, Goodfellas, Godfather 3...even The Freshman 😊

How prescient were these guys? Dances With Wolves indeed did win Best Picture.
@BishopWalters12 I would argue Taxi Driver should have won over Rocky as well.
_After Dark My Sweet_ is a wildly underrated film.
To say I'm shocked die hard 2 was pretty high on siskels list is an understatement. That's almost as pleasing as under siege being on his top ten 2 years later.
He appreciates good action movies. He really liked Speed and raved about it.
Western civilization peaked with the pique - and perceptions - of this one of a kind pair of movie critics. I give them two thumbs up.
I miss Roger and Gene😂
Gene: "it was not a great year for films" (1990) 20:35 IF he only knew how horrible Hollywood has been the last 10 years he should be lucky to be in a year with at least 10 classics..
Yup. If only we had this level of quality now.. and that was considered not a great year for films.
If you're not finding any good movies from the last 10 years, you're not looking hard enough.
There's a pandemic of nostalgia.
Godfather Part 3 has no business being on a top 10 list.
I agree, it shouldn't even exist.
Siskel putting Godfather 3 on his top 10 list….😮😮😮

@@ianmillerdevilsfan1223 sorry I meant Hollywood films. You are correct I know nothing of non-US film and I should probably start watching more of that. Hollywood produced several masterpieces each year throughout the 70s/80s/90s/2000s. Not anymore

I remember having it on VHS. If I recall correctly, there was this long "commercial" before the movie started. It was that Peter, Paul, and Mary song Out Where the Dandelions Grow. I wanna say the commercial was for Pizza Hut? Good stuff.
What a year for DeNiro. “Reversal of Fortune” was great. It’s Jeremy Irons & Glenn Close so…

Even though Ebert selected 'The Grifters' over 'After Dark, My Sweet' here, he would later include 'After Dark' on his list of Great Movies.

6. The Field
7. Edward Scissorhands
8. Jacob's Ladder
9. The Grifters
10.Slacker
Good list. The 90’s were a tremendous decade for films, the last one, unfortunately.
7:30 eye and crow.. gotta love their pics.. like listening to Norm MacDonald
that movie sat on shelf for some other reasons too, I bet
1. Goodfellas
2. Ghost
3. Akira Kurosawa's Dreams
4. Edward Scissorhands
5. House Party
6. King of New York
7. Dances With Wolves
8. Misery
9. State of Grace
10. Child's Play 2.
I guess they must have both missed Millers Crossing…
The Shaq and Kobe of movie critics
Gene had Godfather 3 in his top 10 😬
Out of all these titles the ones I liked are "The Freshman," and "Grifters."
Narc is seriously underrated
man. i've never heard a rave like i have for _Goodfellas._
not from Roger, not from Gene, not from anybody.
Reversal of Fortune is very good
Damn Ebert had a dark taste in films
How did they miss Misery the best Stephen King adaption smh that's why I was so happy to learn Kathy won Oscar she couldn't be denied smh......love these 2 but horror films still have that doubt on people they deserve respect
You're right - Misery should easily have been in both of their top 5
I can't tell whether siskel has a combover
How the hell is Godfather part 3 on this list?!
My favorite films of 1990:
1. Where the Heart is
2. Wild at Heart
3. Pretty Woman
4. Men Don't Leave
5. Without You I'm Nothing
6. Henry and June
7. Goodfellas
8. Quick Change
9. The Cook, the Thief, his Wife and her Lover
10. Alice
So there.
My choices
1. Goodfellas
2. Home Alone
3. Back to the Future Part 3
4. Awakenings
5. The Hunt for Red October
6. Misery
7. Dick Tracy
8. Dances With Wolves
9. Godfather Part 3
10 Kindergarten Cop
Goodfellas should have won
Sorry, but it is just stunning that Avalon did not appear on Ebert's Top 10.
The Freshman was basically one-joke based on Brando looking like himself. Awakenings is my mom when her thyroid is low.
reversal of fortune is one of those interesting movies that may be a pre- lion king Jeremy irons performance
same as like How the Freshman with Matthew broderick works cause it is acts Like city slickers but from the mob perspective ,
There were more great movies in 1990 than the last 10 years of films.
Goodfellas
Dances with Wolves
Jacobs's Ladder
Misery
Edward Scisssorhands
Freshman
Ghost
I could go on of still very watchable films.
How Goodfellas didn't win the Oscar for Best Picture is criminal.
