- DeepSeek, a new AI platform developed in China, has quickly become a hot topic. However, cybersecurity teams, beware - there are deep risks associated with DeepSeek. This video covers what you need to know.
Launched on January 20, DeepSeek has seen rapid adoption, similar to what we saw with ChatGPT. But while its growth is impressive, it comes with privacy and compliance concerns that you should be aware of, so you can take the appropriate security measures.
The most concerning issue with DeepSeek is the serious risks it poses to data security and compliance. According to its privacy policy, the platform collects extensive user data - from text and audio inputs to device details, IP addresses, keystroke patterns, and any personal data and files users provide. This data is stored on servers located in China, grants DeepSeek rights to the information, and can be shared to comply with local laws, including the Chinese government. And unlike OpenAI, DeepSeek does not allow users to opt out of data sharing. Be aware that DeepSeek’s usage policies are governed by the laws of the People's Republic of China, which means you now have lost control over sensitive information and any disputes must be litigated in Chinese courts.
There are also questions about the security of the application. DeepSeek was developed with a mere $6 million in total funding, a fraction of what mainstream AI tools spend on security alone, making DeepSeek significantly more vulnerable to cybersecurity threats. Red teams have already uncovered security flaws, and registration has been suspended due to large-scale malicious attacks.
So, what can you do to protect your organization?
