    Technically, the answer to the question posed in the title of the video is *NO*. DeleteMe does NOT really erase your online data. It only makes your data temporarily invisible to the public. The data brokers do NOT actually delete your data from their servers as a result of actions by an individual or the DeleteMe service. The data on data broker servers remains there, but is tagged as 'not viewable' on their website. This means they can sell their database to another company, or the broker can create a new company with a new name and your data will once again be publicly visible. This is why data brokers never use the terms 'Delete Request'. They always use the terms 'Opt Out Request' or 'Removal Request'. I wouldn't be surprised if some attorney starts a class action lawsuit against DeleteMe for that very reason. Their service does not actually delete your data. They should have named their company HideMe or something like that to avoid misleading people.

      Ok? But that isn’t even a problem with Deleteme. That’s a problem with the data brokers. And hiding your data from the general public is still very valuable even if the servers still have it. Most people aren’t going to go into the deep corners of the internet to search for you. Hiding the data from the top sites is enough, especially for the average person.

      Privacy law applies depending on where you are a permanent resident of, by country and down to state legislatures.
      GDPR only is for EU residents.
      California has similar strong privacy rules to the GDPR,
      and soon Canada will have likely even a stronger privacy law, as it is going through the Parliment now.
      Now ask yourself why Google doesn't allow Bart in search in Canada and the EU when it was announced. Ding Ding Ding
      Canada has a commission set up to inquire with OpenAI already for privacy issues of sucking up all Canadian data entered into the sytstem.

Services like this are still something I want to consider because every once in a while my info is bound to just pop up somewhere, and perhaps there's some places I missed. @@AllThingsSecured Ngl that seems like pretty bad reasoning. I watch a lot of your videos and I think they're super entertaining/educational, but a major aspect of privacy is removing the need to blindly trust organizations.
      You don't seem to have any good justification for believing DeleteMe is not indexing your data and waiting to sell it to the highest bidder. To be clear, I am NOT saying that this is what DeleteMe is doing (or that it is a bad company in general), but I do think when you recommend a service, you must hold companies to a higher standard and be exceptionally careful when it comes to providing endorsements.
      Given the fact that you create privacy-related content, and presumably have a considerable impact on your viewers' privacy-related decisions, it seems you have a unique responsibility to ensure that the products and services you are advocating are safe and reliable.

    Will this service contact local media to remove a person's name from a media story? If not, what services can accomplish this?
    I was granted an expungement, so any references to my prior case have been sealed. However, when I run my name through a Google search, my name pops up in a WKYC story with reference to my indictment. I have attempted to contact them myself (with a copy of the expungement order), however, they have not replied to me after several attempts to contact them via email.
    Any suggestions?

      You can try to contact google to remove it from appearing when someone searches you. In the UK there is a "right to be forgotten" and Google is obligated to remove the publication from search results. In your case, since it was expunged you have a good case. Unfortunately you may have to get a lawyer. The problem is that it was published already so all they can do is just remove it from appearing in a search result.

    • @mungox1
      @mungox1 2 місяці тому

      an expungement only refers to records in the criminal justice system.
      your arrest/indictment was a matter of public record at the time & the newspaper was allowed to print it. There is no US law forcing them to remove it from their archives.

    • @williamcattr267
      @williamcattr267 2 місяці тому

      @@mungox1 Yes, no doubt about it. However, that doesn't mean there shouldn't be a law requiring this information to be taken down from the internet.
      After all, what value is an expungement if potential employers can just Google a applicant's name and find information that is adverse? There needs to be a law mandating the deletion of that information.
      If the court carefully considered the matter conducted through a formal hearing and then deemed a person worthy of a second chance and ordered the record expunged (non-violent offender, and not a sex crime charge), then why keep this info circulating on the web in perpetuity?

Incogni specifically states Google as the company that they are partnered with for the analytics and that you need to read Google's privacy policy to know how they share your info. BTW, Google will without a doubt share and sell your data again. Kanary was one of the only ones I could find that had a very short and clear privacy policy stating that they don't share or sell your data to anyone else. Everything is handled by themselves for marketing and analytics.

      Excellent question, HT2. I believe there are 2 aspects of your personal data within the context of a data broker. One aspect is your data residing on the broker's server. The other aspect is the public display of your data on the broker's website. When you, or a removal service, requests that your data be "removed", you are ONLY addressing aspect 2. In other words, after the removal request your data still resides on their server, but it is tagged as not publicly viewable. The data broker is then able to create a new company, or sell the database to another company, which uses the original database with all of the tags removed. This is why the data brokers refer to such a request as an 'opt out' or 'removal' request. You will never see a data broker refer to it as a 'delete' request. Bottom line: NOTHING is actually being deleted as a result of your request. This is a big game of wack-a-mole until Congress creates consumer protection legislation to put an end to the game.

    Would be pretty ironic if companies like DeleteMe & Incogni turned out to be massive data collection agencies that're trying to 'legally' obtain the data of millions of people through the back door. In essence, condense those hundreds of data collection agencies down to just a small handful... & charge Joe Blogs for the privilege.

    I believe your response about "reduces Junk Mail?" seems to be more about physical mail. Here in Canada I seem to get little to no junk mail ... maybe it has to do with how our mail carriers handle things here.
    My question is how well does it reduce spam and phishing e-mails, if it does at all. I have this weekly barrage of some of the very same email subject lines, but i know they use constantly different email source names … I constantly tried Microsoft blocking and reporting features, even making Rules to delete certain subject line words (trust me Microsoft, I don't ever want an email from ChristianMingle or SilverSingles, delete them without question!), but for some reason the rules don't appear to be working.
    I'm wondering if DeleteMe will even make a dent into this issue.
