  • One of the worst feelings in bowhunting is working super hard to get a chance at a big buck, only to screw up when it matters most. For most of us, you are lucky to get a small number of opportunities to harvest a certain caliber of buck and things don't always work out perfectly. In this video, I share 3 of the biggest mistakes I made during the 2022 deer season. Hopefully, you can make better decisions and execute your shot when it counts. If you bowhunt deer long enough, eventually you will miss but deer hunting 2022 was one of the roughest seasons I've had. At the end, I discuss one of my strategies to help navigate these mess ups. Hope it helps someone!

    Good video. I’m guilty of all 3..I try learn and move forward but still find ways to screw up. Up here up until last years law change we was only allow one deer period. And the herds just aren’t like anywhere else and shot opportunities may only come once in a season. This year I’m more determined than ever to make it happen.

      Good luck this year! It's tough when you don't have many opportunities each season. It sounds silly but I think visualization and running different scenarios through your head at least is beneficial. Something I haven't done enough of. A lot of things just come from experience and learning from mistakes (yours and others).

    Awesome video brother! Super valuable info. In an age when most hunters only post their successes, I love this kind of content

      Thanks man! Hoping to have less of this type of content next season but I really want to help other people also avoid these issues...

    LOL love the human elements of all your videos!! I am in St Joesph MI and just got 80 acres to hunt and hopefully will be connecting with some MI Swamp Buck and will probably make these mistakes. Thanks for the videos.

      That means a lot for you to say! I try to be relatable. I'm just a normal guy who loves hunting. The last few years, I've hunted not far from St. Joe. There's some good bucks in that area. Hope you knock down a good one!

    I had the same thing happen with number one this year. Ducked my arrow at 40 and clean missed him. Good advice for sure and definitely learned from that experience!

      As a side note, with that decoy hunt at the end, wouldn’t the buck potentially think that the crunching was the buck decoy as you were setting it?

    • @NextStepOutdoors
      @NextStepOutdoors  Рік тому +1

      The buck could have definitely thought the noise was from the decoy but I didn't know exactly where he was at and wanted to avoid drawing any attention to myself while I was out in the open with no cover.

      @@NextStepOutdoors makes sense yeah, just figured I’d ask about it. I’ve had a couple times where I walked in on crunchy ground and played it up a bit, grunting every now and then it letting out a huff, just something to make it seem more natural for the deer around. It seems to have worked for me as I had one where deer were on me within minutes of getting set.

    Great video, real hunting. Missed a nice buck last seaon. Had a nice buck coming in, got impatient, got busted on movement. If i would have just waited , he probably would have come right in. I turned for a weak side shot, got busted. He was coming in should have just waited.

      Man, seems like every year there are a few situations just like that. One of these seasons everything will go right...at least that's what I keep telling myself lol

    Great video and honesty! I’d like to ask some questions about your first hunt; did you just decide to do an observation sit in that field area, then move in the next day? Or did you find sign in this area in post season?

      I had one chance to scout this piece at the end of July. The first night I took an educated guess at where they might come out, as well as where I could see a long ways. There was definitely an element of luck involved and I was able to just slide down the field edge about 30 yards. The full video is posted and titled "14 bucks in one hunt" or something to that effect.
