Norton Superior - a Norton and Brough Superior hybrid

  • By popular request, here’s a review of my NorSup. Built to re-imagine a wartime prototype made to power an outfit capable of carrying a small cannon and gun crew, this is the only example in existence (AFAIK). Utilising a 1000cc OHV Matchless X2 engine, which only ever saw service in three wheel Morgan cars and the final versions of the Brough Superior SS100, fitting it required a great deal of thought! Built by the late Bill Higginson, it remains a tribute to his genius. Under my stewardship, I’ve converted the bike to more of a ‘sporting’ silhouette, whereas Bill made it in a more leisurely style. For sure, I’ve done lots of work on it, but the vision and execution was initially, all his. This motor is almost infinitely tuneable, think modern Harley, but in its current setup of around 45bhp and 80ftlbs of torque it is just about manageable in a girder rigid frame; any more would be…challenging😬
A little challenging to own, requiring a mighty swing on the kickstart to move a pair of big pistons and thick, cold engine oil, it’s a bit of a leap of faith - literally. It also has open valve gear, so the rider will never be oil-free after a spirited ride. The video doesn’t really reflect the roar it makes, either, you’ll just have to imagine it. I hope you enjoy my review of the Norton Superior.

Agreed. Absolutely wonderful. I'd happily endure the oily legs....but then, I'm used to that. Thanks for the great look. Love the wings 🙂.

Tbh it’s kind of irrelevant. This isn’t going anywhere in the foreseeable future. I think the engine alone is worth around £30k though.

Lovely bike, but your video would have been far better if you new the actual names and terms of what you are trying to describe, and why would you be using SAE50 oil on a winters day?

You’d be surprised how much I know about this machine, and bikes in general, but I deliberately try to pitch these videos to viewers who may have a passing interest in old bikes, but little practical understanding or awareness. I was surprised the other week when out on a flat tank Norton and chatting to a modern bike rider who didn’t actually know what a primary drive chain or magneto was!
Oil? I have to run this on 50w , the huge rollers in the engine batter thinner oils to death in very few miles.
