    A REAL Fire Truck Siren

    • @bigman10239
      @bigman10239 5 років тому +4

      yes...better than the eq that has become so popular. you can actually hear this siren. i think LA county still uses these on engines. or perhaps a newer version that doesnt sound synthetic.

  • @Henry455
    @Henry455  15 років тому +5

    The A refers to not having a brake installed, the brake was an option, if it was supplied with a brake, it was a Q2B. The major changes over the years were in the clutch assembly and the motor. Newer Q's have front grills that have perforated metal covering the center where the F logo is. The older grills are open as mine is.

    Kids, this is what we had back in the day... back before they started putting brakes on them. You see, this was back when men were men. Marlboro Reds were the only filtered air that we needed at a fire. The siren would still be coasting as we were loading hose back on the truck after a Great All-Nighter! The music of an old Q mixed with a couple of Grovers and a straight-piped Detroit sounded like a symphony coming down the road. Actually, it was a masterpiece!

    Awesome! I love the wind down!! The Q is such a beautiful sound!

  • @Henry455
    @Henry455  15 років тому +12

    This siren is 12 volts, the Q was introduced in the early 1950's and it was available in 6 volts because a lot of vehicles still had 6 volt electrical systems. I have a 1963 Federal catalog and you could still get a 6 volt or 12 volt model at that time.

    Thank you very much for that information. It is interesting how much the sound had changed over the years, unless the current models just have to be "broken in" first? They've lost the characteristic growl to some degree and coast down much faster. Thanks again!

    • @peacefulrevolutionist
      @peacefulrevolutionist 2 роки тому

      No you're mixing it with the Q2B which has a build up before going down, it's like a Q wail siren, this one is a Q2A and is a manual Q siren. I prefer the Q2A over anything else because it allows you to control how load the siren is depending on the traffic and the speed you're going, unlike the Q2B which plays automatically.

    • @allen480
      @allen480 2 роки тому

      @@peacefulrevolutionist No, you are thinking about the EQ2B which is the electronic version. It sounds somewhat close to the classic Q. The EQ2 does have the ability to auto wail but not the Q which uses momentary contact switches (through a high current solenoid).

  • @Henry455
    @Henry455  15 років тому +1

    The new Q's use a one way bearing for the clutch and I have noticed on UA-cam fire apparatus videos that many of them have a short coast time. My Q's have the simple ball & ramp clutch and I know both of them are over 40 years old and had the heck run out of them and the clutches still work great. I guess it was a cost saving to replace the ball & ramp clutch with a screw clutch and then the current one way bearing. It also helps to have a well broken in rotor bearing for long coast times.

    @robertgift I personally love the high pitch of the Q (you probablly could've guessed by my username...lol). It gives me chills when it screams at full power. I find lower pitch sirens to be less satisfying. The high pitch of the Q is not just due to the number of ports, but also the high speed of the motor. Of course, the faster it spins, the more air it pushes through the ports and the louder the siren is.

    Most mechanical sirens sound output is measured in db (decibles,measure of sound pressure level). Federal claims 123 db at 10 feet from front of siren. Most electronic sirens are very directional, most of the sound is directed foward by dssign of the speaker, with a mechanical, most of the sound is from the side.

    Nice.
    Thanks
    But lets hear whole wind-down.
    Especially good when close near end of wind-down.
    I would paint the rotor's front edge half white and half black to visually show rotation.
    I painted one rotor vane of my Federal Signal 2t22 air raid siren (tornado siren) to show rotation better. (Also, after each monthly test, when I line that vane up in a particular stator port, the vanes of both rotors are blocking their ports, keeping out birds, bugs, snow, etc.)

    Don't I know it! At a 02:30 heart attack scene!!!, I stupidly accidentally hit our ambulance's Q2A foot switch.
    Quickly I tightly sealed the front (intake) with my coato diminish the volume as much as possible.
    I have a working 2t22A which averages 2-1/2 minutes from 3,450 rpm to rotor stop. Last 30 seconds or so is fairy quiet. Wanted to seal the bottom intake to see how much longer windown becomes.
    At 5,300 ft ASL, our less dense air does not impart as much drag.

    @robertgift The Q has 14 ports and I agree the pitch is too high. My Sireno 40010 has the same dia. rotor and has 12 ports but sounds almost identical to the Q. That could be due to motor rpm's. The reason for no wind down to silence is strictly because of video file size. The slower the rotor turns, the longer it will coast if that makes sense. As the rotor slows, it is not working to move as much air so the drag becomes less and less. Watch the first part of my video "Old Q2 Rebuilt".

    Federal Signal made a mistake having it attain such a high pitch.
    Better to have HALF the number of ports so that the sound would be an octave lower and carry farther.
