  • Don't make this rookie mistake rekeying locks! Master pins are a common thing to check for that rookie or inattentive locksmith technicians may accidentally forget. Today, Uriah of Guardian Safe & Lock goes over the negative consequences of leaving master pins inside of a lock when you rekey them.

First, I wanted to say that I liked your video (and some of your others I've watched that led me here). You mentioned that you weren't sure how many new possible keys your example had enabled, so I thought I would try to answer that in way that might help demystify it.
Each master pin you added made it so that there would be 2 (rather than just 1) possible combinations of key cuts that would work for that position. So, by adding 3 master pins, you made 2 possibilities for position 1, 2 possibilities for position 2, and 2 possibilities for position 3. That makes 2x2x2=8 combinations that will work to unlock the cylinder--the original key and 7 additional combinations of key cuts. Using 0 to indicate the lack of use of the master pin in a position, and a 1 to indicate the use of a master pin in a position, the following list identifies the possibilities after the 3 master pins you added:
000 - unchanged - no pins different from original
100 - only first position making use of master pin
010 - only second position making use of master pin
001 - only third position making use of master pin
110 - first two positions making use of master pins
011 - second and third positions making use of master pins
101 - first and third positions making use of master pins
111 - first three positions making use of master pins
Hope that helps anyone that was wondering about the number of key combinations enabled by adding master pins.

Good video. I might add to that that you might suggest that they check the top Pn to make sure it is the correct one for that particular chamber because sometimes it does matter if you have the right one in there in some lock manufactures it does make a difference that’s just something else that might go along with what you’re saying.

Oh , so the point is to remove the old master pins, to check the cylinder what is inside? It took me a couple of minutes but I get it ! :) Ok, nice video as always!
