Father Kelly + Mountain Road + Musical Priest - Irish Fiddle ~ Making Elderberry Jam! | Katy Adelson

- Here are three fun Irish fiddle tune reels: Father Kelly, Mountain Road, and Musical Priest. These tunes seem to be super common tunes, and they fit into so many different sets! They are great tunes to learn!
Father Kelly was written by Fr Patrick Joseph Kelly (Fr "PJ" Kelly), and was compiled in the Bulmer & Sharpley "Music from Ireland vol. 3" book published in 1976. I think that makes it more of a modern tune than a traditional tune, but it is played frequently at sessions in Colorado. I believe there is another "Father Kelly" tune that is similar, but a different tune that is sometimes referred to as "Father Kelly's #2."
Mountain Road was composed by Michael Gorman around 1922. The way I play in this video is often the parts of the tune played in local sessions in Colorado, and many consider it to be a "single reel" with two parts but there are actually six parts to the original tune! Here is a recording that is apparently of Michal Gorman playing his tune with all of the parts:
www.cranfordpub.com/mp3s/micha...
Musical Priest is a much older tune, collected by Francis O'Neill's " Music of Ireland: 1850 Melodies" book that was published in 1903. It is in the key of B minor, which is kind of a rare key signature for Irish fiddle tunes. B minor uses the same key signature as D major, so there are lots of opportunities to plop it into a set with a D major tune. Since it starts on an "F#," it often also works well after a G major tune!
I thought I'd try a slightly different kind of video with a tad bit of cooking! I found a bunch of elderberry bushes in a park, so I thought I'd make some jam from them. I grew up with elderberry bushes in the backyard of my parent's house, so making this brought back some memories. Elderberries are low in pectin, so they need a fruit high in pectin, like apples and/or lemon added to solidify into a jam -- otherwise it will be elderberry syrup (which is also tasty!).
Elderberry bushes grow really well in the front range of Colorado. They like semi-arid, sunny climates, and you will frequently find them in public parks and landscaping around. much of the state. Many people don't realize that these bushes are actually elderberries, and instead buy overpriced elderberry infused goods that cost a ton of money at some health food grocery stores.
Rumor has it that elderberries are anti-viral, but I've been eating loads of them most of my life and still manage to get sick fairly frequently, lol. But, they do make a yummy jam!! If you have never had elderberries before, I think they taste similar to a blend between purple grapes and lightly tart prunes (dried plums).
Elderberry bushes have a lookalike that grows in more humid climates called, "Devils Walking Stick." I think the big difference between the two plants is that Devils Walking Stick bushes have thorns -- I've never seen an elderberry bush with thorns. Some people also report that elderberry may cause a stomach ache if eaten raw. I've personally never gotten a stomach ache from them, but it's probably best to cook them. =)
--- Easy Elderberry Jam Recipe ---
5-ish US cups (1.2 L) of elderberry juice -- use a juicer or a mill to remove the skins and seeds. Don't juice the stems.
2 apples, sliced (juiced if you have a juicer)
1 lemon, juiced
1.5 cups (250 g) of sugar (this makes a tart jam; add more sugar for a sweeter jam)
Put everything into a pot and heat to about 225°F (107°C), stirring frequently. It will boil for about an hour at 212 to 215-ish°F (100 - 102°C), but will rapidly increase in temperature once enough water has evaporated. Remove the apple slices if they weren't juiced, pour the jam into jars, and place in the refrigerator to set. Makes 2 small jars of jam.
Thank you for watching, and happy Autumn!! =)

Katy, wonderful to see your smiling face again this early October! Love the tunes - all upbeat and bring a smile to the face; great music to ring in the fall weather :)
Thank you so much! I hope you are well! =)
Katy, if you're a mess, you're a perfect mess. Nicely played and delicious looking jam!

Discovered your playing yesterday by accident Katy. Your surely brightened my day despite us being in the grip of the fourth wave of covid here in Ireland. Mighty playing and the jam looks lovely also 🎵🎻🧁Thank you.
Delightful , and so nice to hear tunes we're unfamiliar with
Ahh I love everything about this! Fiddle, traditional and all around lovely.
Your smile is so pure!
So I've been watching a lot of old-time and celtic fiddle videos (listening to a lot of Johhny and Phil Cunningham), and your Swallowtail Jig came up. Terrific stuff, so now I'll be listening to more :-)
Was just sitting here listening to your 'Tunes' album while taking a break and cruising the 'net while wondering when we'd be graced with a new video. Peeked into YT and, lo & behold, a new video! Well played on all levels. 😉
Lovely! Really nice bowing, especially the triplets. And the jam looks delicious!
Sounds great! So technically were you having a “JAM” session! Ha ha!! Snort! Snort! Thanks!
As always a great choice of music and outfits. You have great taste in both.
Thank you for the nice music. 🤗
I love all your videos. Thank You. They are quite innovative & have great choices of music ! I am aspiring to learn violin again and you make in possible for me to see how much fun it will be.
Hello Katy, thanks for your music always dynamic an good rythm. Same for recipe jam ...hummmmm ! From France 💙
Thank you! And thanks for listening! =) It's a good time to make some jam~! :D
Katy, you are such a joy! Great video and your jam looks amazing!
Thank you so much!! =)
Love elderberries! used to pick them every summer and although my Mom didn't care for them she would make a pie and some jam for my Dad and me. Miss that. Love the fiddle playing!!!
Hi Katy, wonderful to hear another beaut tune performed by you with that beaut smile. Picking elderberries and making jam sounds so yum and so glad it turned out spot on for you to enjoy for breakie.,
Hi friend good music!!!
God bless ya 🙏
I'm a touch late but don't think I ain't been listenin. Fantastic as always, keep it up. Your fiddlin always does me good. Toe tappin, head bobbin, and a bit more smilin is what this world needs now more than ever.
Thank you Katy! Musical, naturalness, healthy. A rise on our souls.
👏 Now that we have your recipe for elderberry jam, please share with us your recipe for gooseberry pie...yum-yum! 👍 😊
Yeah! So glad to see a new video. I would also love a tutorial on The Gael. 🥰 The jam looks delicious! Elderberries are so time consuming. 🙈
They are super time consuming! :o But I like how elderberries taste, so I think it's worth the effort. =) I'll look more into The Gael! I think it would be considered a slip jig, and I think it would be a fun misty-fall-winter-y song to play -- I'll have to research it a little more. :D
Katy Adelson thank you so much!! 🥰
Elderberries always make me think of "Arsenic and Old Lace", in which the sisters poison their guests with adulterated elderberry wine.
Oh my! Well, my elderberry jam doesn't poison people (I hope!)! :) But that sounds like an interesting, and spooky plot -- I'm going to google it! =) It might fit with the upcoming Halloween vibe!
@@KatyAdelson A very definite Halloween vibe. A very funny movie with Cary Grant, Raymond Massey, Peter Lorre, and others. I won't say more to avoid spoiling it.
Time to go dig another lock in Panama...
@@itatane CHARGE!!!
The arsenic in the wine killed him, not the wine itself. Hence the title "Arsenic and Old Lace"👍
oh dear Katy, I'd really would lovee to listen to you playing Narnian Lullaby, pleaseee 😖😖😖 and by the way, these are such lovely tuness!!!
I grew up with those berries in my back yard in PA. None here in Fairbanks, Alaska. Lots of Blueberry this year though.
Father Kelly be one of my favorite tunes. Lovely music. Thanks for the tunes.
First of all, the arrangement is great! And the music fits in so well with the video its self! I am glad the jam turned out well!
Yay! Thank you so much!! =) De-stemming elderberries takes hours, so I was really glad when it actually worked. Otherwise I was just going to cut the whole elderberry part, lol...
Lol!
I love it!! Great fiddling, and the jam looks delicious!
LOVE this Katy ! 🌻
Excellent, as always!
Your music is awesome and the jam looks delicious!!
Always love your performances.
I love your videos ! Thank you to bring all these shiny feelings to us !
Thanks for the new video, I have gone through all your previous videos multiple times.
Glad to see you are safe and healthy.
Really a lively piece of music, considering Sukkot just ended a few days ago, a time for meditation and study. These tunes are very fast and lively.
You seem to be a very practical person. Someday you will make someone very happy considering you are a very good Violinist, Teacher, and a very good cook as well!
I have some good news here. I got a Niece three years ago, when she married my Nephew, Ryan. I found out a couple weeks ago, Anna took Violin lessons when she was younger.
She doesn't play the Violin now, but she agreed to help me learn!!! WOW!
Sometime this week, she will go with me and help me pick out a Student Violin and Bow.
Though not a teacher, any pointers she can give would be a great asset. Both Anna and I play the Flute. I thought that would be wonderful news to pass on to you.
I don't have Elderberry, but I have Turkish Fig jam in the fridge.
Enjoy your Elderberry jam, and keep jamming on with the Violin (pun intended) :))>
Thanks Katy, for another very pleasant episode!
Fantastic!
Sweet music, sweet and fresh video like the elderberries! Thanks Katty. Be fine.
Such a cool idea to include making the jam in the video with your fantastic playing! I'm a cellist and so I'm playing back to you in my head the entire time, too! 🎶🎻🎵
Wow Katy. You have beautifully integrated 2 of my favorite things: Music and Cooking (well, the eating really but in order to get to that I have to cook). Great music. thanks.
Katy, I've so enjoyed your videos especially the tutorials (very helpful) however, this is, in my opinion, the best video you've produced! It reveals so much of the real you; and how beautiful you are. Violins are capable of phenomenal music but only if the musician projects themselves into the instrument and you do. Thank you for sharing and being such a blessing.
Hi Katy, I enjoy your music. Thank you for posting it. Try spreading that jam on a bagel. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. My mom used to make elderberry pie. Some even make wine out of it. Ever try that?
Nice music. Congrats!
Amazing!
Просто красота)) Katy спасибо за ваше творчество!) всего вам хорошего))
-‘s -20F. Needed a tune before relaxing into a book. Lovely!
This is very nice! Reminds me of a farm i spent some time on when i was a kid :)
Like the Elder Wand in Harry Potter there's the legend of the Elder Bow. Whoever owns that bow is able to play every violin piece without practicing it.
Good irish fiddle, please do more scottish fiddle's please
Love your performance and instructional videos, Katy. So well done, you're an excellent musician, with a sweet personality to boot! I'm a long time musician, but a self taught newbie on violin/fiddle [1 year], and your instructional videos help a lot. And watch Arsenic and Old Lace, if you get the chance. It's a classic old comedy, perfect for Halloween.
beautiful
Used to make various kinds of wine with my brothers, including elderberry. Maybe we should try that again
Good bles you😍
this is wunderfull
Waoo ! Musical priest 🎶 espectacular !!!
what fun!
Que maravilhoso, Kati Adelson 🇧🇷
Thank you!! =)

Elderberry jam is indeed good! As for your performance, that was a cracking good set! I'm blessed to have some mulberry trees in a park near me. Everyone complains about the messy berries, but they look at me like I have a third eye when I gather buckets of them to make preserves. Wish I could learn to fiddle, but well... I lack the skill. Nice to enjoy others' talent, nevertheless.
Katy! So wonderful to hear you play! I would LOVE to get lessons from you (on just a few things, as I am self learning and am struggling in a few areas. Like vibrato and position shifts) but I want to be able to play gaelic/Celtic style fiddle!
I'll take three jars!
Your videos are so cute and enlightening!
Man this sounds so clean!! I would love to see you play Old Joe Clark, it's a traditional Bluegrass tune. Keep up the amazing work!!!
Alway lovely to see and hear another brilliant tune from you Katie.
You called it Elderberry jam, which surprised me, we say jam in the UK. I thought you'd call it jelly in the US.
Thank you! I used to call it jelly, but I confused so many people across the pond thinking I was spreading fruit gelatin on my toast that I now try to remember to call it jam. =) Although, in the USA, we usually refer to it as "jam" when it has chunks of fruit in it, and "jelly" when it's more like thickened fruit juice without chunks of fruit.
A quick cheat sheet for fruit spread categories that I've found helpful :
Jelly - Fruit Juice, Pectin, sugar. Firm and homogeneous.
Jam - Juice with fruit bits, sugar with less pectin. More texture and more easily spreadable.
Preserves - Larger fruit chunks in juice, sugar, even less pectin (sometimes none at all). Loose consistency, sometimes slightly runny.
Compote - Like preserves, but no pectin. More like fruit cooked in fruit syrup. Usually eaten quickly, rather than being preserved in jars.
Edit: there is a bit of overlap. A jam can be made with just juice, but to a more loose consistency, for example.
@@itatane in the UK we also have "Marmalade" (as far as I know it's made in similar way to jam) it is a fruit spread made from oranges which can be with or without peel pieces. There is plain or thin or thick cut peel versions. It is not sweet like jam, it's actually quite bitter especially with pieces of peel included. It has been very popular for many years, I love it but unfortunately it is less popular nowdays as youngsters only seem to like sweet jams.
@@brucejoseph8367 Oooh, I love orange marmalade. It has regional popularity, at least here in Ohio. Another good jam that is sadly out of vogue is damson plum. One of my favorites growing up, and now really hard to find. I also forgot to mention chutney, as it is technically a jam, just with the addition of spices and vinegar. Cheers.
WOW this makes me want to get up and start moving. Great video, how about sharing your recipe for the jam, looks tasty!
Thank you! =) I put the recipe in the description box. ^_^
@@KatyAdelson sorry I missed that part, thanks!
Keep jamming. No jeune-iper. Elder berries only! 🙃
Your sound hookup is so incredible compared to 90% of videos on youtube.
One of these days we need to get you to show Alex Depue how to properly do high quality sound recording for video.
Please do one on 'The Gael' The Last of the Mohicans theme.
I've had a lot of requests for that song -- I'll try to come up with something! =)
@@KatyAdelson Thank You Mam.
@@KatyAdelson Listen to The Gael performed by The American Rogues accompanied by the USAF band - my favorite version
Olé!!
Nice 'jam' session
You should play in Idaho so I can hear you play live.
Commenter no. 31, big fan 😁
Музыка чудесная. А про вино из одуванчиков будет видео?
you're good at playing the violin katy
Jam sassion
So you make your own Jam? I love green fig jam but berry jam is nice too enjoyed the music as always
Yeah, I like to make a lot of my own things. It's a lot of fun, and allows me to control how much sugar to add. I think there is way too much sugar (and salt!) in food these days, at least in the USA....
Katy there is nothing like the smell of freshly baked bread with just butter and a mug of freshly brewed coffee for me. Thought you were in Scotland though. my mistake
Is this a guide to stealing berries? 😮😁🥰
:o I think it's a grey area since it's in a public space...but, somewhat...yea...lol. I also had picked mullein from an open space to make tea to help with all the fire smoke we have been having out West -- I think as long as it's not invasive and overly greedy, I don't see too much wrong with it... =)
@@KatyAdelson I just wanted to annoy you a little. 😜 I think there is nothing wrong with picking some berries! 😘
