Cinderpelt wasn’t supposed to be a medicine cat, but a Warrior. It went against her fate StarClan had for her. It was the kits’ destinies to die as kittens. It sucks, but that’s the only theory I can think of
I have this sort of au idea where Cinderpelt still gets reincarnated, but when Cinderpaw gets injured, her leg doesn't heal. So Leafpool is really confused as to why StarClan would reincarnate Cinderpelt if they were just going to let her damage one of her legs again, but then she realises the reason StarClan reincarnated Cinderpelt wasn't because there was anything wrong with her leg, but because there was something wrong with the way that ThunderClan treated her. Leafpool realises that ThunderClan should have let Cinderpelt fulfill her dream of becoming a warrior rather than forcing her into the medicine den, and she encourages Firestar to let Cinderpaw carry on training to become a warrior. And yeah, Cinderheart basically becomes a warrior with the same injured leg that Cinderpelt had, and she lives a perfectly fulfilling life and is a great warrior. Idk I just like the idea of the Clans realising that the way they treat disabled cats is messed up
@@aj613. it was stated multiple times that Deadfoot wasn't to be underestimated and it was cats not taking him seriously that made him a good fighter. If he was strong enough to make his way to Deputy then there had to have been something about him that made him a worthy warrior

Yeah! He was still able to carry out duties when he healed and Rainswept Flower helped him, why were other cats shoved into being something they originally didn't want to be? I mean for Briarlight, she can't really run or walk, but for Cinderpelt, she still could've been a warrior. Just adjust herself and be able to settle down more and get used to injured leg, like Jagged Peak. Wait, but how would Jayfeather be a warrior? Realistically, a blind cat would have to be in a constant/stable environment to get used to it and be able to walk and do things fine on their own, but they live in the forest, where everything can change day-to-day, moon-to-moon, and season-to-season. However, he was stated multiple times to get a sense of the forest and be used to it I guess? The help of fictional world building- so he could've potentially been a warrior. Except he was shoved into the medicine den.
Petalleaf Jayfeather could’ve at least been something like a camp guard and while yes, it’d be extremely hard to achieve that, it’s possible if he tries. For Briarlight, she could do much the same. Jayfeather also if he wished, could help train apprentices to fight without sight, much like how Jagged Peak taught others to do the same. Briarlight could also show others how to fight without their back legs. These two skills could serve tons of practical uses in fights and in the case another cat like them comes to be. Briarlight could as well teach young apprentices how to manage (emotional and physical) pain and stress, which is something that needs to be taught to all good warriors.
@@petalleaf2808 I understand that some people don't see it in the same way as me, but Jayfeather 100% could have been a warrior. He could easily see the environment and navigate around him, that's clearly stated in the books many times, he even travels to the *mountains* that one time like?? He clearly is able to take care of himself so why shouldn't he be able to, at the very minimum, hunt? He can hear animals, he can scent them, he knows where they are and what they are doing. With enough training, he would be able to be a warrior. Another thing is that the "realistically" is really... Not a valid point anymore in this book series. These is a fiction book, a blind cat becoming a warrior is definetly not the most far-fetched thing we have seen coming from this series
I think Cinderpelt shouldn’t have been reincarnated. Like c’mon, there’s other cats that deserved to be reincarnated, like Briarlight. Also, there were innocent kits that died and never got a second chance. ... I’m starting to think StarClan has favoritism.
I love Briarlight a lot, but I don't think a reincarnation would've been good for her, or any disabled cat for that matter. It's one thing to reincarnate a cat from centuries ago, but reincarnating a cat just because they had a disability gives such a terrible message to readers.
I see this video more as a “How the writing team ruined Cinderpelt” rather than “I don’t like Cinderpelt” It was the writing team’s decision to force her to be a medicine cat, and it was their decision to make her sweet and nice all of the time

Yeah, I have a three legged cat and she can climb trees. Three leg cats aren’t that helpless. I’d say if warriors was real my three legged cat would be one. They made Cinderpelt more kind and caring as she had to be, she acted kinda Mary-sue-ish in the last few books before her death. They made it look like three legged cats were more fragile and helpless as they are, and it’s really inaccurate.
It would have been unique to see her character flip like evil side where she tried to kill people she didn’t like and only help who she liked it would have been unique
They should have made it so that Cinderpelt CHOSE to be a medicine cat. Maybe after staying in the medicine den for all that time she discovered her amazing memory for herbs and a knack for helping cats. All her eagerness to become a warrior dissolves, and she finds herself sad to be leaving the medicine den once she’s recovered. Soon enough, she admits to Fireheart that she what she really wants is to be a medicine cat. Now you have a message that even with a disability, you can still chose to be whatever you want, and it doesn’t have to change much about the plot. (Except for that terrible Cinderheart weirdness, which would be a welcome change.)
Well she kind of DID. That’s essentially what happened. She was in the med den so long and grew to enjoy having Yellow as her mentor and learning all the herbs and stuff.
I mean, I understand that some ppl don’t like her, personally I loved her before she was reincarnated also kinda annoying that she only had an injured leg and didn’t get a chance to be a warrior anymore. Even Jayfeather got to try, and Brightheart got to be one aswell but yeah everyone can have his own opinion and if u don’t like her or smth thats totally fine. xD

Honestly, I absolutely hated when Leafpool told Cinderpelt that she didn’t know what love was. Not gonna lie, I wanted Cinderpelt to claw Leafpool’s ears off for that. I know I sure would.

hello, hello! i'm part of pogclan which is the subsection of the wc community that started the #warriorcatsableism tag, and i am so incredibly grateful that you're using your platform to discuss how unfairly these cats were treated in the books! disabled cats are still very nimble capable of doing things that non-disabled cats can do as you presented very well in your video, and it's very unfair that they're treated this way in a book series where the cats have advanced medicine and communication. the tag was started because we believed that many disabled cats in the series weren't getting a fair shake, and we hoped to call for change in the future installments for warriors' audience of disabled folks to enjoy without the narrative that you can't be happy if you're disabled being told to them. it makes me so very happy that you've brought a light to this subject, especially considering that your audience is fairly young. much love, akira!

To be fair, the way her leg was crushed would actually damage nerves to the point that her leg would actually be completely numb of pain . Maybe the only part that’s still painful would be where the leg is connected to the body, and only when injured connecting nerves flare up
She didn't lose her leg tho, it got crushed. It's stated that the cold makes the joint pain flare up or something but I don't think it ever said she was always in pain-?
Personally I have more hate for how Briarlight was treated than Cinderpelt. My cousin has a dog with only 2 working front paws and he runs around like a lunatic a keeps up with the other 3 able bodied dogs. Try telly him he's disabled and cannot walk. Also if you search "the kitten lady" on UA-cam she has fostered a cat with a similar problem to Briarlights and proves she should have been climbing trees and running around with the rest of the cats, but instead we get a character cooped up in the camp barely able to move. The Erins should have done just some basic research before adding her in. Her message could have been better.
YES THANK YOU. I love Briarlight but like what did they do to her character when she was disabled?? Like, animals with paralyzed back legs can still walk, run, climb, etc.
They actually did show this with Briarlight. She zooms around the camp doing her exercises! The problem is they're in a forest. You know, full of thorns and rocks and such that she could get scratched up on without noticing, a bad infection waiting to happen. With their advanced medicine it probably wouldn't be that bad an outcome if the cuts did get infected but you never know.

i have something to add to this, even though people might have already said it: JAGGED PEAK WAS A WARRIOR! he even had pretty much the same disability as Cinderpelt and he has been shown many times fighting as fiercely as any cat. Cinderpelt could have easily been a warrior, had she been given the chance.
I agree and dissagree at the same time. I remembered plenty of times in the book where cinderpelt let out her emotions about her leg. Aside from that, she was a energetic, bright troublemaker as a warrior apprentiece, who allways was a bit too curious for her own good. As a senior, she started to become sarcastic and no nonsense like Yellowfang. While her broken leg is what she is known for the most, there allways was a lot of character in her. BRIARLIGHT on the other hand... don't get me wrong, I like her. But she had NOTHING going for her before her injiurie. And she was allmoust unrealisticly optimistic afterwards. The whole cinderheart thing was a terrible idea. It just shows how cruel starclan is: Cinderpelt lived a relativly long, happy life. Why did SHE get another chance? Why not Briarlight? Or Snowkit? Deadfoot? Snowfur? Rosepaw? Is Jayfeather gonna get another chance? Who get's to decide this? It's not even a real incarnation. They just shoffed her into the body of a perfectly fine kit. How sick is that?

My cat got hit by a car, right on her back leg, and what? She's jumping, she's meowing, she's running, she's hunting, she has her brothers, she's happy. And please don't say stuff like "bUt CiNdErPeLt DiDn'T hAvE a VeT wHeRe To Go" bcs my parents never took our cats to vet, in any case, sadly. She's dead now, but her leg wasn't the case of her death. I still love Cinderpelt as a character, but now, when I know that it IS possible for a cat like that to run and jump, i also know that erins maybe didn't think of it properly...

Cinderpelt AU: Cinderpelt and Brackenfur live as normal and healthy kits and become apprentices joyfully, given to Graystripe (bracken) and Fireheart (cinder). In leafbare, with their apprentices watching, Graystripe almost dies until Silverstream saves him and they fall in love, basically the same timeline until cinderpaw gets her leg run over. When in the medicine den, she is given the choice to become a medicine cat, highly preferred that she does become one because yellowfangs lack of apprentice, and also her injury, and also the warrior option, which is the option cinderpelt takes, despite yellowfangs and firehearts words of uncertainty. Cinderpaw continues careful training under fireheart, (cloudpaw is given to somebody else) and Graystripes affair is discovered, resulting in brackenpaw being trained under yellowfang, which is possibly a much better role, due to his patience. Might edit later to elaborate but whatever.
Akira, I understand your argument, but Cinderpelt has gone through a ton of pain in her life. I like her, and she deserves to be loved by much more. She's an inspiration to us, for getting through her injured leg.
I agree, I felt like she could have been a way better cat. Not that her actions weren’t bad, but it’s really the authors who messed up. Even if she couldn’t fight in hard battles, she could most likely hunt and go on patrols and help her clan in better ways. The same thing with Briarlight. I feel like they the authors write her disability off wrongly like she didn’t even do anything. Most of the book she just sat around and did her exercises and was just there for moral support and I feel like she could’ve been much better. I’ve seen videos of cats with not working back legs and they literally do a handstand to get around. I feel like she just both of them deserve a lot better
While I can see your point with most of the arguments you made, the only one I disagree with is when you said she only shows happy emotions. She is devastated because she thought she caused Silverstream’s death, and that shows her vulnerable side and her need to feel needed by the clans.
warriors ableism is absolutely terrible and i agree, what they did to cinderpelt (and a number of other cats) was really just awful disability rep. it sucks they went with what they did, and i hope in the newer books they fix that kind of ableism that's been going on in this franchise for way too long.
Cinderpelt had the same chance of being a great warrior as any “perfect” cat. If anything, it would’ve been an upside. A smart warrior with their back leg ran over would use that to their advantage. In battle, their enemy would under estimate them, the warrior would use their disability to their advantage and win off that. If anything, ThunderClan wasted that chance of Cinderpelt being able to outsmart any enemies.
And the fact that Briarlight is a warrior, kinda. Two injured legs. Cinderpelt only has one, she can figure it out! She can hunt, and fight, she just has to figure it out! And the fact that cats with three legs do perfectly fine. I saw one in the wild and it was chasing a bird. The leg was just injured, so it had to limp.
Big reason why in a Scourge reborn AU I wrote she was able to become a warrior. She's got 3 working legs, cats get around very easily on 3 legs! She's got the drive but she was just shoved away into the healer hole. Deadfoot also became WindClan's leader bc I just love the guy!
As a person with mobile issues myself, I can say I actually like the fandom version of Cinderpelt. I think the version I like the most is the Cinderpelt shown in the 'breathe' pmv. While you're right about cats with three legs being fine, there's the fact that Cinderpelt still had her leg attached to her. Many warrior moves involve the sweeping of the paws or legs, and that could have seriously harmed her further. Or it could have caught on something as she was running into battle, or been dead weight should she need to flee from danger. She found happiness in being a medicine cat, which I actually think is a good message. Things might not go as you planned, but you can still be special and find your place in the world
i totally agree dawg, even if cinderpelt is one of my favorite characters. personally, i interpret her reincarnation as like it was done not because she needed another life where she was abled, but because in her death she said that destiny was something that we couldnt argue against and we had to accept. maybe its just me judging this bad writing of disabled characters, but that was such a hard line to read knowing her character. in my eyes, her flaw was that she was too passive in a way, she didnt fight what everyone told her that she could never be a warrior and accepted it and never let the disappointment or anguish about it show. maybe that could also just be because she never felt like she had a chance, but thats just me its hard to decipher bad writing. she poured all her energy into learning everything she could about caring for people and being a medicine cat so she didnt have to let herself feel that anguish, because at that point her position in the clan was so much more important and she couldnt afford to give up on them. yellowfang was old and there was not other medicine cat apprentice, and maybe she felt some kind of selfless responsibility for that. i dont know i like her potential as a character so i wanted to state my case on why i do like her and what i think couldve been done better if her feelings were, i dunno, shown more, and a reason for why they might now have shown them in the first place. cinderpelt ramble aside, thank you for talking about this and bringing attention to the blatant ableism in warriors because god it cant be addressed enough im sick and im tired
i think some of the things you listed as her just being 'kind and sweet' are things that make her interesting as a character. she didn't just heal littlecloud and whitethroat in secret because of her kindness, she went against yellowfang's warnings and the disapproval of her clan because she takes her job as a medicine cat very seriously and couldn't stand by and let two cats get sicker and sicker. it's this fierce passion for her duty that inspires littlecloud to become a medicine cat. it's also a noteworthy part of her character that she was so excited to become a warrior, and just because she had that chance taken away from her didn't mean she didn't fully devote herself to being a med cat. she didn't initially want to be a med cat but that doesn't mean she wasn't going to be the best healer she could be. when trying to save silverstream's kits she looked tigerclaw, her attempted murderer, in the face and yelled at him to lick the kits to help them survive, and he listened to her. silverstream's death also takes its toll on her, being the first patient she couldn't save. i would say this is what pushed her to be a better medicine cat, so that she didn't have to lose anyone again.
The Cinderheart-pelt reincarnation stuff could've been handled SO MUCH BETTER if the reason Cinderpelt was reincarnated was because of her deep love of her clan. She was so determined to keep her clanmates safe in the badger attack, that her spirit defied the laws of Starclan and remained to fight for her clan through sheer will alone. That way, her reincarnation comes from the strength of her spirit, not the pitiful graces of Starclan due to her disability.
I feel like a better Cinder arc would be to have her become a Brightheart-like assistant to Yellowfang but later on, when given the choice to continue extensive training as a warrior, she would choose to be a medicine cat as she enjoyed healing and helping others.
Seems to me like thunderclan is mainly the ableist one riverclan and windclan have both had disabled/permanently injured cats in positions of power Idk why thunderclan can’t even let disabled cats be normal warriors
Warrior cats: Lets revive a cat whose life was ruined by tigerclaw. Swiftpaw, bluestar, brightheart, stonefur, Redtail, Oakheart, Runningwind, Brindleface, Gorsepaw, and Firestar: AM I SOME SORT OF JOKE TO YOU!! Starclan: Yeah tigerclaw seems like a good choice for leader.
I feel it's like with Brightheart but kind of different. Brightheart couldn't help her injury but Cinderpaw could! She could of been able to be a warrior. I feel like if you took her injury away, she's just as minor as she was before. Also, why was *she* reincarnated? The whole *Snowkit=Snowtuft* theory could be right but in a different way. Imagine this: Snowkit did die, but was reborn as Snowkit of ShadowClan, he became a warrior.

I like her, but at the same time I agree with you. Jayfeather had his chance to be one of the best characters ever; he was a main character, yes, but Cinderpelt also was around many main characters, so why not give her a chance to *be* a character? Also, in my opinion, even “accepting this destiny without complaining” kinda means giving up fighting for your dreams. And here is the other problem: if you say something bad or “could have done more” about a disabled character it will be taken as ableism. Especially when almost everyone else and the book itself praises them so much (and I’m not talking about Jayfeather or Briarlight right now)…
I loved her until I discovered she had a crush on firestar to be honest I don’t think it fitted with her character like she litterally told firestar about sandstorm I never thought that maybe cinderpelt had a crush on him until she just said it and also she isn’t always nice she literally tries to attack leaf paw when she was trying to run away with crowfeather also look at dead foot HE BECAME DEPUTY! bad thunderclan! Also I hated the reincarnation plot like they litterally made Leafpool act terribly when cinderpaw fell she was like “oh no she might get hurt again which means her whole life is meaningless!” Although talking about cinderpelt again she might not have been able to be a warrior though as some other people have said her injury was worse than deadfoots like her foot wasn’t just broken it was mangled it would drag behind her she would of had to go through a lot of pain just hunting and I think that makes her death even more meaning full knowing she fought her hardest and didn’t give up til the badgers were gone even though she was in such terrible pain Edit: maybe it was obvious to other people maybe i should reread the books but I didn’t see anything thinking she had a crush on him also I hate how they forced her to be a med cat they should of maybe had her be healed not completely but mostly and give her the option to continue training as a warrior and she could of chosen to be a med cat or maybe the reincarnation happens still but she doesn’t heal and thunder clan learns they should of let her be a warrior in the first place
The difference between Cinderpelt and 3 legged cats was most likely that Cinderpelt was basically carrying the leg with her, and it probably hurt lots if she stepped on it, basically dead weight. But I still don't like what they did to her she should have had a choice
I personally think they did a good job displaying disability with Cinderpelt. The reality of disability is that we can't obtain the same things that we could if our bodies weren't disabled. I wasn't born with a disability, it happened later in life so I know quite well what it's like to not be disabled. One of the most important things I've had to learn is that I can't do now what I used to be able to do and to be ok with that. I love Cinderpelt's character because she accepts that she can't pursue her original dream but she embraces and excels with her new one. With a disability it's really important to know and accept your limits, otherwise you will always be focusing on what ifs and you will just end up hating yourself. Cinderpelt went through what I'm going through and I wholeheartedly appreciate that representation.
I feel like yellowfang would have been a much better mentor to leafpool because she was in a forbidden relationship with forbidden kits and could have helped her tbh
Honestly Cinderpelt could’ve become a warrior. She could still hunt and they could’ve worked out battle loves for her. The one problem I think she would’ve had was cats attacking her hurt leg and making it worse overtime during battle
This is a valid opinion. I understand the frustration that comes with not liking Cinderpelt. This video was very clear, and I appreciate you helping me see the flaws and where the writing team could have done better. One of the things I like about the Warriors fandom is that we are not afraid to criticize the books. For me, Cinderpelt will hold a special place in my heart. She was the character that got me into the series.
Honestly I hate to say it but I agree I loved Cinderpelts character, but I feel her arch should of ended when she died She had a brave ending, and that should of been enough Sometimes it’s better to end a character arch than continue it and mess up the character for some people :/
Well I find that some cats have better advantages because they actually have their leg amputated. Her broken leg would get in the way if she tried. Yeah I understand DeadFoot has it just as bad with his front leg but I think it would be hard having a broken back leg too. Please don’t attack me I am just saying my opinion

I like Cinderpelt a lot, but it's mostly because I loved her dynamic with Firestar. The apprentice/mentor bond is something the books sort of scrapped by the time New Prophecy rolled around, and her close friendship with him was one of the highlights of the first arc, even if they handled her situation... poorly.
They should make a Cinderpelt super edition, Could probably make it about some secret medicine cat stuff where she has to find and get rid of some imposter cat without anyone noticing, but in the book they think the cat dies some other way, I just think that would be entertaining
It's not ableism, just bad and inconsistent writing. The Erins have shown that they know how to write disabled characters properly (like Jagged Peak despite his annoyingness, and Deadfoot and Jayfeather). Cinderpelt is really the only example of a disabled character being badly written in Warriors. If the Erins were really ableist, all of their disabled characters would be treated terribly.
I see people in the comments making the argument about Deadfoot. I haven’t seen anybody mention this or not but Deadfoot lived his whole life with a bent paw, he didn’t go through some tragic event. So from the start he learned how to do everything with three paws. And it probably would be different for a cat if their front or hind paws were injured. Deadfoot had his front paw bent while Cinderpelt with her hind paw. And jagged peak. Remember, Cinderpelt and Jagged Peak live in different times, cats must have acted differently in their times. Jagged was before the clans formed while Cinderpelt was many years after clans were established. And Jagged had help from Rainswept Flower and then Holly and maybe his kits. Cinderpelt’s closest cats were Frostfur and Fireheart. I didn’t read the first arc fully in a while so I might get things wrong but Fireheart understood she couldn’t be a warrior and Frostfur probably could only see her broken paw and nothing past that.
I have a little storyline change/au that may or may not help with some of the points in thes video: This starts when Cinderpelt is treating Whitethroat and Littlecloud, but instead if doing it because she's perfect she does it to feel useful to someone as she felt like a dead weight to her clan adn that it was the least she could do to redeem herself for the accident. After sometime Firestar finds out but kets her keep doing it in hopes it would help, but when Whitethroat and Littlecloud go away have White actually kill Runningwind and make him a more lasting side villain, like have him be Tigerclaw/star subordinate, because of that we could have Cinderpelt feel even worse and the secret get away and the clan think less highly of her, then he could have her run away before the fire and with Yellowfang's death make the clan tealise how important she was and Firestar go look for her. Then Cinder could become less of the love-everyone peace-bringer, into a more agressive medicine cat towards other clans, after that we could fix the whole "bad representation" kinda solved by making her train and help on the Bloodclan battle. Then her have a much more dramatic fight with Leafpool about Crowfeather, in the badger attack she coukd see Crow fight for them and save him instead of the kits and make her make peace and abandon her prejudice towards other clans Not the most thougt out or complex change but i tried
A lot of the comments section likes Cinderpelt. And that’s fine, but I have to agree with Akira. The Erins really did all the disabled cats dirty. Brightheart: She was definitely the best executed out of all of the cats on this list. She did irritate me in The Sight when she treated Jaypaw/feather differently when in earlier books, she gained lots of insecurities from discrimination. Longtail: He, on the other hand, had to retire early and couldn’t even become a medicine cat or anything. Because he was blind. Jayfeather was also blind, and achieved more than lots of abled cats. Protagonist rights, I guess. Cinderpelt: Just watch the video Akira made. I’ll write here anyways. Being forced to be a medicine cat when some other cats, *cough* Cinderheart *cough* were able to heal. Jayfeather: I’m not mad about him being a medicine cat, but I’m mad that everything he achieves was said something like this. “Our *blind* medicine cat apprentice saved Breezepaw”. I have such a big problem with that. Briarlight: Like Longtail, she wasn’t able to have any purpose after her injury. She should have became a medicine cat, but we got ALDERHEART, the one that does nothing but fuss about prophecies and whine. Squirrelflight really shouldn’t have had kits. (That’s all I can think of, I might add more as I think of them.)
Getting around vs being able to move efficiently to hunt are two different things. There's also no human to amputate it for her so it's not getting in the way. She could have maybe tried, but it would have been very hard to actually do what's expected of warriors for her.
Okay, so yeah, Cinderpelt probably could have been a warrior. But there are cats like Brightheart and Jagged Peak who got to be warriors despite their disabilities. The thing is, if every cat with a disability got to be a warrior, the books just wouldn't feel as accurate. In other words, maybe it wasn't as much the writing team saying she couldn't be a warrior as the cats around her -- I mean, if all the cats just decided that every disabled cat should have that opportunity, it might be good, but would it be as accurate to how people really act? And even if she could have been a warrior, there are cats who really just can't do as much as others, like Briarlight (although she technically is a warrior, she can't hunt or fight). In the end, every leader has to make the decision about what to do with the disabled cats in their Clan -- and this also has to do with the culture of the Clan at the time. Cinderpelt was pushed into the Medicine Den, but under Firestar's leadership, Briarlight was allowed to become a warrior despite the fact that she couldn't hunt anymore -- but that being said, they didn't try to figure out a way for her to do everything the other warriors could; it just wouldn't have worked. And also, Jayfeather wasn't forced to become a Medicine Cat -- he was called by StarClan, and after receiving a message from them, requested the switch

Deadfoot’s kit name was Hopkit, and it’s because he was born like that, and his mother named him after his limp. But Tallstar decided to rename him deadpaw, because well, his paw is dead. And eventually he was named Deadfoot.
I just think it's horrible that the writers, even if unintentionally, are basically saying that if you have a physical disability, you're pretty much worthless as a warrior. To be fair I've never actually read the books myself, but this is based on what I have seen of them.

I disagree, I find what they did with her better than Longtail. I thought the whole point was 'well she's injured and can't do what she wanted anymore, but she can find a new purpose'. She could have just done nothing and the clan would have taken care of her for the rest of her life, but she chose to find a way to be useful.
Someone made a video about Ableism in the Warrior Cats series. Examples are seriously injured or disability cats being forced to be medicine cats and not warriors. I never realized this until this video was made and I'm deeply troubled by this. I'm glad this has greatly decreased over time but felt like its back up again with Alderheart and Jayfeather. Alderheart issue yeah I'm still mad about because sometimes not everyone is a fast learner and need to take time and that to them is a 'disability' they need to force him to be a medicine cat.... Its sickening and wrong in so many levels! Its its the animated series "My Pride" ever since watching that and the youtube video about Ableism and now this...yeah Erins, its time to stop this!
Cinderpaw was a better character as Fireheart’s apprentice. She had so much personality! I feel like she became so neutral once she became a medicine cat. She slowly lost her personality and was pushed to the side when leafpool became a full medicine cat.

I have this sort of au idea where Cinderpelt still gets reincarnated, but when Cinderpaw gets injured, her leg doesn't heal. So Leafpool is really confused as to why StarClan would reincarnate Cinderpelt if they were just going to let her damage one of her legs again, but then she realises the reason StarClan reincarnated Cinderpelt wasn't because there was anything wrong with her leg, but because there was something wrong with the way that ThunderClan treated her. Leafpool realises that ThunderClan should have let Cinderpelt fulfill her dream of becoming a warrior rather than forcing her into the medicine den, and she encourages Firestar to let Cinderpaw carry on training to become a warrior. And yeah, Cinderheart basically becomes a warrior with the same injured leg that Cinderpelt had, and she lives a perfectly fulfilling life and is a great warrior. Idk I just like the idea of the Clans realising that the way they treat disabled cats is messed up

Yeah! He was still able to carry out duties when he healed and Rainswept Flower helped him, why were other cats shoved into being something they originally didn't want to be? I mean for Briarlight, she can't really run or walk, but for Cinderpelt, she still could've been a warrior. Just adjust herself and be able to settle down more and get used to injured leg, like Jagged Peak.
Wait, but how would Jayfeather be a warrior? Realistically, a blind cat would have to be in a constant/stable environment to get used to it and be able to walk and do things fine on their own, but they live in the forest, where everything can change day-to-day, moon-to-moon, and season-to-season. However, he was stated multiple times to get a sense of the forest and be used to it I guess? The help of fictional world building- so he could've potentially been a warrior. Except he was shoved into the medicine den.
Petalleaf Jayfeather could’ve at least been something like a camp guard and while yes, it’d be extremely hard to achieve that, it’s possible if he tries. For Briarlight, she could do much the same.
Jayfeather also if he wished, could help train apprentices to fight without sight, much like how Jagged Peak taught others to do the same. Briarlight could also show others how to fight without their back legs. These two skills could serve tons of practical uses in fights and in the case another cat like them comes to be.
Briarlight could as well teach young apprentices how to manage (emotional and physical) pain and stress, which is something that needs to be taught to all good warriors.

He could easily see the environment and navigate around him, that's clearly stated in the books many times, he even travels to the *mountains* that one time like?? He clearly is able to take care of himself so why shouldn't he be able to, at the very minimum, hunt? He can hear animals, he can scent them, he knows where they are and what they are doing. With enough training, he would be able to be a warrior. Another thing is that the "realistically" is really... Not a valid point anymore in this book series. These is a fiction book, a blind cat becoming a warrior is definetly not the most far-fetched thing we have seen coming from this series

I love Briarlight a lot, but I don't think a reincarnation would've been good for her, or any disabled cat for that matter. It's one thing to reincarnate a cat from centuries ago, but reincarnating a cat just because they had a disability gives such a terrible message to readers.

Yeah, I have a three legged cat and she can climb trees. Three leg cats aren’t that helpless. I’d say if warriors was real my three legged cat would be one. They made Cinderpelt more kind and caring as she had to be, she acted kinda Mary-sue-ish in the last few books before her death. They made it look like three legged cats were more fragile and helpless as they are, and it’s really inaccurate.
It would have been unique to see her character flip like evil side where she tried to kill people she didn’t like and only help who she liked it would have been unique
They should have made it so that Cinderpelt CHOSE to be a medicine cat. Maybe after staying in the medicine den for all that time she discovered her amazing memory for herbs and a knack for helping cats. All her eagerness to become a warrior dissolves, and she finds herself sad to be leaving the medicine den once she’s recovered. Soon enough, she admits to Fireheart that she what she really wants is to be a medicine cat. Now you have a message that even with a disability, you can still chose to be whatever you want, and it doesn’t have to change much about the plot. (Except for that terrible Cinderheart weirdness, which would be a welcome change.)

disabled cats are still very nimble capable of doing things that non-disabled cats can do as you presented very well in your video, and it's very unfair that they're treated this way in a book series where the cats have advanced medicine and communication. the tag was started because we believed that many disabled cats in the series weren't getting a fair shake, and we hoped to call for change in the future installments for warriors' audience of disabled folks to enjoy without the narrative that you can't be happy if you're disabled being told to them. it makes me so very happy that you've brought a light to this subject, especially considering that your audience is fairly young. much love, akira!

To be fair, the way her leg was crushed would actually damage nerves to the point that her leg would actually be completely numb of pain . Maybe the only part that’s still painful would be where the leg is connected to the body, and only when injured connecting nerves flare up

Personally I have more hate for how Briarlight was treated than Cinderpelt. My cousin has a dog with only 2 working front paws and he runs around like a lunatic a keeps up with the other 3 able bodied dogs. Try telly him he's disabled and cannot walk. Also if you search "the kitten lady" on UA-cam she has fostered a cat with a similar problem to Briarlights and proves she should have been climbing trees and running around with the rest of the cats, but instead we get a character cooped up in the camp barely able to move. The Erins should have done just some basic research before adding her in. Her message could have been better.

They actually did show this with Briarlight. She zooms around the camp doing her exercises!
The problem is they're in a forest. You know, full of thorns and rocks and such that she could get scratched up on without noticing, a bad infection waiting to happen. With their advanced medicine it probably wouldn't be that bad an outcome if the cuts did get infected but you never know.
I've always hated what the Erins did with medicine cats. There's a small problem that might make it more inconvenient to be a warrior? Yep, their incapable of following their dreams. I'm not disabled, but it still pisses me off

i have something to add to this, even though people might have already said it:
JAGGED PEAK WAS A WARRIOR! he even had pretty much the same disability as Cinderpelt and he has been shown many times fighting as fiercely as any cat. Cinderpelt could have easily been a warrior, had she been given the chance.
I agree and dissagree at the same time. I remembered plenty of times in the book where cinderpelt let out her emotions about her leg. Aside from that, she was a energetic, bright troublemaker as a warrior apprentiece, who allways was a bit too curious for her own good. As a senior, she started to become sarcastic and no nonsense like Yellowfang. While her broken leg is what she is known for the most, there allways was a lot of character in her.
BRIARLIGHT on the other hand... don't get me wrong, I like her. But she had NOTHING going for her before her injiurie. And she was allmoust unrealisticly optimistic afterwards.
The whole cinderheart thing was a terrible idea. It just shows how cruel starclan is: Cinderpelt lived a relativly long, happy life. Why did SHE get another chance? Why not Briarlight? Or Snowkit? Deadfoot? Snowfur? Rosepaw? Is Jayfeather gonna get another chance? Who get's to decide this?
It's not even a real incarnation. They just shoffed her into the body of a perfectly fine kit. How sick is that?

My cat got hit by a car, right on her back leg, and what? She's jumping, she's meowing, she's running, she's hunting, she has her brothers, she's happy. And please don't say stuff like "bUt CiNdErPeLt DiDn'T hAvE a VeT wHeRe To Go" bcs my parents never took our cats to vet, in any case, sadly. She's dead now, but her leg wasn't the case of her death. I still love Cinderpelt as a character, but now, when I know that it IS possible for a cat like that to run and jump, i also know that erins maybe didn't think of it properly...

Cinderpelt AU:
Cinderpelt and Brackenfur live as normal and healthy kits and become apprentices joyfully, given to Graystripe (bracken) and Fireheart (cinder). In leafbare, with their apprentices watching, Graystripe almost dies until Silverstream saves him and they fall in love, basically the same timeline until cinderpaw gets her leg run over. When in the medicine den, she is given the choice to become a medicine cat, highly preferred that she does become one because yellowfangs lack of apprentice, and also her injury, and also the warrior option, which is the option cinderpelt takes, despite yellowfangs and firehearts words of uncertainty. Cinderpaw continues careful training under fireheart, (cloudpaw is given to somebody else) and Graystripes affair is discovered, resulting in brackenpaw being trained under yellowfang, which is possibly a much better role, due to his patience. Might edit later to elaborate but whatever.

Akira, I understand your argument, but Cinderpelt has gone through a ton of pain in her life. I like her, and she deserves to be loved by much more. She's an inspiration to us, for getting through her injured leg.

I agree, I felt like she could have been a way better cat. Not that her actions weren’t bad, but it’s really the authors who messed up. Even if she couldn’t fight in hard battles, she could most likely hunt and go on patrols and help her clan in better ways. The same thing with Briarlight. I feel like they the authors write her disability off wrongly like she didn’t even do anything. Most of the book she just sat around and did her exercises and was just there for moral support and I feel like she could’ve been much better. I’ve seen videos of cats with not working back legs and they literally do a handstand to get around. I feel like she just both of them deserve a lot better

While I can see your point with most of the arguments you made, the only one I disagree with is when you said she only shows happy emotions. She is devastated because she thought she caused Silverstream’s death, and that shows her vulnerable side and her need to feel needed by the clans.
warriors ableism is absolutely terrible and i agree, what they did to cinderpelt (and a number of other cats) was really just awful disability rep. it sucks they went with what they did, and i hope in the newer books they fix that kind of ableism that's been going on in this franchise for way too long.

If anything, it would’ve been an upside.
A smart warrior with their back leg ran over would use that to their advantage. In battle, their enemy would under estimate them, the warrior would use their disability to their advantage and win off that.
If anything, ThunderClan wasted that chance of Cinderpelt being able to outsmart any enemies.
And the fact that Briarlight is a warrior, kinda. Two injured legs. Cinderpelt only has one, she can figure it out! She can hunt, and fight, she just has to figure it out! And the fact that cats with three legs do perfectly fine. I saw one in the wild and it was chasing a bird. The leg was just injured, so it had to limp.
Big reason why in a Scourge reborn AU I wrote she was able to become a warrior. She's got 3 working legs, cats get around very easily on 3 legs! She's got the drive but she was just shoved away into the healer hole.
Deadfoot also became WindClan's leader bc I just love the guy!

As a person with mobile issues myself, I can say I actually like the fandom version of Cinderpelt. I think the version I like the most is the Cinderpelt shown in the 'breathe' pmv.
While you're right about cats with three legs being fine, there's the fact that Cinderpelt still had her leg attached to her. Many warrior moves involve the sweeping of the paws or legs, and that could have seriously harmed her further. Or it could have caught on something as she was running into battle, or been dead weight should she need to flee from danger.
She found happiness in being a medicine cat, which I actually think is a good message. Things might not go as you planned, but you can still be special and find your place in the world

i totally agree dawg, even if cinderpelt is one of my favorite characters. personally, i interpret her reincarnation as like it was done not because she needed another life where she was abled, but because in her death she said that destiny was something that we couldnt argue against and we had to accept. maybe its just me judging this bad writing of disabled characters, but that was such a hard line to read knowing her character. in my eyes, her flaw was that she was too passive in a way, she didnt fight what everyone told her that she could never be a warrior and accepted it and never let the disappointment or anguish about it show. maybe that could also just be because she never felt like she had a chance, but thats just me its hard to decipher bad writing. she poured all her energy into learning everything she could about caring for people and being a medicine cat so she didnt have to let herself feel that anguish, because at that point her position in the clan was so much more important and she couldnt afford to give up on them. yellowfang was old and there was not other medicine cat apprentice, and maybe she felt some kind of selfless responsibility for that. i dont know i like her potential as a character so i wanted to state my case on why i do like her and what i think couldve been done better if her feelings were, i dunno, shown more, and a reason for why they might now have shown them in the first place.
cinderpelt ramble aside, thank you for talking about this and bringing attention to the blatant ableism in warriors because god it cant be addressed enough im sick and im tired
i think some of the things you listed as her just being 'kind and sweet' are things that make her interesting as a character. she didn't just heal littlecloud and whitethroat in secret because of her kindness, she went against yellowfang's warnings and the disapproval of her clan because she takes her job as a medicine cat very seriously and couldn't stand by and let two cats get sicker and sicker. it's this fierce passion for her duty that inspires littlecloud to become a medicine cat. it's also a noteworthy part of her character that she was so excited to become a warrior, and just because she had that chance taken away from her didn't mean she didn't fully devote herself to being a med cat. she didn't initially want to be a med cat but that doesn't mean she wasn't going to be the best healer she could be. when trying to save silverstream's kits she looked tigerclaw, her attempted murderer, in the face and yelled at him to lick the kits to help them survive, and he listened to her. silverstream's death also takes its toll on her, being the first patient she couldn't save. i would say this is what pushed her to be a better medicine cat, so that she didn't have to lose anyone again.
The Cinderheart-pelt reincarnation stuff could've been handled SO MUCH BETTER if the reason Cinderpelt was reincarnated was because of her deep love of her clan. She was so determined to keep her clanmates safe in the badger attack, that her spirit defied the laws of Starclan and remained to fight for her clan through sheer will alone. That way, her reincarnation comes from the strength of her spirit, not the pitiful graces of Starclan due to her disability.

I feel like a better Cinder arc would be to have her become a Brightheart-like assistant to Yellowfang but later on, when given the choice to continue extensive training as a warrior, she would choose to be a medicine cat as she enjoyed healing and helping others.

I feel it's like with Brightheart but kind of different. Brightheart couldn't help her injury but Cinderpaw could! She could of been able to be a warrior. I feel like if you took her injury away, she's just as minor as she was before. Also, why was *she* reincarnated? The whole *Snowkit=Snowtuft* theory could be right but in a different way. Imagine this: Snowkit did die, but was reborn as Snowkit of ShadowClan, he became a warrior.

I like her, but at the same time I agree with you. Jayfeather had his chance to be one of the best characters ever; he was a main character, yes, but Cinderpelt also was around many main characters, so why not give her a chance to *be* a character? Also, in my opinion, even “accepting this destiny without complaining” kinda means giving up fighting for your dreams.
And here is the other problem: if you say something bad or “could have done more” about a disabled character it will be taken as ableism. Especially when almost everyone else and the book itself praises them so much (and I’m not talking about Jayfeather or Briarlight right now)…
I loved her until I discovered she had a crush on firestar to be honest I don’t think it fitted with her character like she litterally told firestar about sandstorm I never thought that maybe cinderpelt had a crush on him until she just said it and also she isn’t always nice she literally tries to attack leaf paw when she was trying to run away with crowfeather also look at dead foot HE BECAME DEPUTY! bad thunderclan! Also I hated the reincarnation plot like they litterally made Leafpool act terribly when cinderpaw fell she was like “oh no she might get hurt again which means her whole life is meaningless!” Although talking about cinderpelt again she might not have been able to be a warrior though as some other people have said her injury was worse than deadfoots like her foot wasn’t just broken it was mangled it would drag behind her she would of had to go through a lot of pain just hunting and I think that makes her death even more meaning full knowing she fought her hardest and didn’t give up til the badgers were gone even though she was in such terrible pain

The difference between Cinderpelt and 3 legged cats was most likely that Cinderpelt was basically carrying the leg with her, and it probably hurt lots if she stepped on it, basically dead weight. But I still don't like what they did to her she should have had a choice
I personally think they did a good job displaying disability with Cinderpelt. The reality of disability is that we can't obtain the same things that we could if our bodies weren't disabled. I wasn't born with a disability, it happened later in life so I know quite well what it's like to not be disabled. One of the most important things I've had to learn is that I can't do now what I used to be able to do and to be ok with that. I love Cinderpelt's character because she accepts that she can't pursue her original dream but she embraces and excels with her new one. With a disability it's really important to know and accept your limits, otherwise you will always be focusing on what ifs and you will just end up hating yourself.
Cinderpelt went through what I'm going through and I wholeheartedly appreciate that representation.

Honestly Cinderpelt could’ve become a warrior. She could still hunt and they could’ve worked out battle loves for her. The one problem I think she would’ve had was cats attacking her hurt leg and making it worse overtime during battle
This is a valid opinion. I understand the frustration that comes with not liking Cinderpelt. This video was very clear, and I appreciate you helping me see the flaws and where the writing team could have done better. One of the things I like about the Warriors fandom is that we are not afraid to criticize the books.
For me, Cinderpelt will hold a special place in my heart. She was the character that got me into the series.

Well I find that some cats have better advantages because they actually have their leg amputated. Her broken leg would get in the way if she tried. I like Cinderpelt a lot, but it's mostly because I loved her dynamic with Firestar. The apprentice/mentor bond is something the books sort of scrapped by the time New Prophecy rolled around, and her close friendship with him was one of the highlights of the first arc, even if they handled her situation... poorly.

It's not ableism, just bad and inconsistent writing. The Erins have shown that they know how to write disabled characters properly (like Jagged Peak despite his annoyingness, and Deadfoot and Jayfeather). Cinderpelt is really the only example of a disabled character being badly written in Warriors. If the Erins were really ableist, all of their disabled characters would be treated terribly.

I personally do like Cinderpelt, I just wish the writing team didn't make her so helpless and goody-goody all the time.
I see people in the comments making the argument about Deadfoot. I haven’t seen anybody mention this or not but Deadfoot lived his whole life with a bent paw, he didn’t go through some tragic event. So from the start he learned how to do everything with three paws. And it probably would be different for a cat if their front or hind paws were injured. Deadfoot had his front paw bent while Cinderpelt with her hind paw.
And jagged peak. Remember, Cinderpelt and Jagged Peak live in different times, cats must have acted differently in their times. Jagged was before the clans formed while Cinderpelt was many years after clans were established. And Jagged had help from Rainswept Flower and then Holly and maybe his kits. Cinderpelt’s closest cats were Frostfur and Fireheart. I didn’t read the first arc fully in a while so I might get things wrong but Fireheart understood she couldn’t be a warrior and Frostfur probably could only see her broken paw and nothing past that.
I have a little storyline change/au that may or may not help with some of the points in thes video:
This starts when Cinderpelt is treating Whitethroat and Littlecloud, but instead if doing it because she's perfect she does it to feel useful to someone as she felt like a dead weight to her clan adn that it was the least she could do to redeem herself for the accident. After sometime Firestar finds out but kets her keep doing it in hopes it would help, but when Whitethroat and Littlecloud go away have White actually kill Runningwind and make him a more lasting side villain, like have him be Tigerclaw/star subordinate, because of that we could have Cinderpelt feel even worse and the secret get away and the clan think less highly of her, then he could have her run away before the fire and with Yellowfang's death make the clan tealise how important she was and Firestar go look for her. Then Cinder could become less of the love-everyone peace-bringer, into a more agressive medicine cat towards other clans, after that we could fix the whole "bad representation" kinda solved by making her train and help on the Bloodclan battle. Then her have a much more dramatic fight with Leafpool about Crowfeather, in the badger attack she coukd see Crow fight for them and save him instead of the kits and make her make peace and abandon her prejudice towards other clans

A lot of the comments section likes Cinderpelt. And that’s fine, but I have to agree with Akira. The Erins really did all the disabled cats dirty.
Brightheart: She was definitely the best executed out of all of the cats on this list. She did irritate me in The Sight when she treated Jaypaw/feather differently when in earlier books, she gained lots of insecurities from discrimination.
Longtail: He, on the other hand, had to retire early and couldn’t even become a medicine cat or anything. Because he was blind. Jayfeather was also blind, and achieved more than lots of abled cats. Protagonist rights, I guess.
Cinderpelt: Just watch the video Akira made. I’ll write here anyways. Being forced to be a medicine cat when some other cats, *cough* Cinderheart *cough* were able to heal.
Jayfeather: I’m not mad about him being a medicine cat, but I’m mad that everything he achieves was said something like this. “Our *blind* medicine cat apprentice saved Breezepaw”. I have such a big problem with that.
Briarlight: Like Longtail, she wasn’t able to have any purpose after her injury. She should have became a medicine cat, but we got ALDERHEART, the one that does nothing but fuss about prophecies and whine. Squirrelflight really shouldn’t have had kits.
(That’s all I can think of, I might add more as I think of them.)

Getting around vs being able to move efficiently to hunt are two different things. There's also no human to amputate it for her so it's not getting in the way. She could have maybe tried, but it would have been very hard to actually do what's expected of warriors for her.
Okay, so yeah, Cinderpelt probably could have been a warrior. But there are cats like Brightheart and Jagged Peak who got to be warriors despite their disabilities. The thing is, if every cat with a disability got to be a warrior, the books just wouldn't feel as accurate. In other words, maybe it wasn't as much the writing team saying she couldn't be a warrior as the cats around her -- I mean, if all the cats just decided that every disabled cat should have that opportunity, it might be good, but would it be as accurate to how people really act? And even if she could have been a warrior, there are cats who really just can't do as much as others, like Briarlight (although she technically is a warrior, she can't hunt or fight). In the end, every leader has to make the decision about what to do with the disabled cats in their Clan -- and this also has to do with the culture of the Clan at the time. Cinderpelt was pushed into the Medicine Den, but under Firestar's leadership, Briarlight was allowed to become a warrior despite the fact that she couldn't hunt anymore -- but that being said, they didn't try to figure out a way for her to do everything the other warriors could; it just wouldn't have worked. And also, Jayfeather wasn't forced to become a Medicine Cat -- he was called by StarClan, and after receiving a message from them, requested the switch

Deadfoot’s kit name was Hopkit, and it’s because he was born like that, and his mother named him after his limp. But Tallstar decided to rename him deadpaw, because well, his paw is dead. And eventually he was named Deadfoot.

I disagree, I find what they did with her better than Longtail. I thought the whole point was 'well she's injured and can't do what she wanted anymore, but she can find a new purpose'. She could have just done nothing and the clan would have taken care of her for the rest of her life, but she chose to find a way to be useful.

Someone made a video about Ableism in the Warrior Cats series. Examples are seriously injured or disability cats being forced to be medicine cats and not warriors. I never realized this until this video was made and I'm deeply troubled by this. I'm glad this has greatly decreased over time but felt like its back up again with Alderheart and Jayfeather. Alderheart issue yeah I'm still mad about because sometimes not everyone is a fast learner and need to take time and that to them is a 'disability' they need to force him to be a medicine cat....
Its sickening and wrong in so many levels! Its its the animated series "My Pride" ever since watching that and the youtube video about Ableism and now this...yeah Erins, its time to stop this!

Cinderpaw was a better character as Fireheart’s apprentice. She had so much personality! I feel like she became so neutral once she became a medicine cat. She slowly lost her personality and was pushed to the side when leafpool became a full medicine cat.
