0:12:32 What if the top SAC rank gets a bad exam score?
0:13:26 Example - Comparing two students
    0:15:00 What is this, Dad?
The maximum possible study score is 50. Study scores are fitted to a bell curve with a median of 30, which means about half of all students score 30 or above. A study score of 40 or above is very hard to achieve - less than 9% of students are awarded 40+ study scores for each subject!
'Scaling' is the process by which VTAC adjust the raw study scores for each subject, by comparing students' results across all subjects. For example, VTAC's algorithm has determined that students that score raw 30 in Maths Methods tend to average study scores about 35 in their other VCE subjects. So a raw 30 in Maths Methods is scaled to about 35 to make the Methods study score comparable to other subjects, when calculating students ATAR scores.
For most VCE subjects, your internal SAC scores contribute 50% to your study score, and the final exam contributes the other 50%. For VCE Mathematics, the internal SAC scores contribute 40% and the final two exams contribute the other 60%.
'SAC moderation' is the process by which VCAA allocates your SAC grade, by comparing your SAC results relative to the other students at your school, then comparing your school's exam results to other schools.

Crazy how much impact the school you go to has on the study score. Why can't VCAA write sacs for each subject and make all schools do the same SACs?

Yes I think the fairest would be a common exam at the end of Unit 3 and another one at the end of Unit 4. Not gonna happen any time soon though...

Are you the person that made the quiz? Literally every year 12 at my school (Ironically, Glen Waverley Secondary College) spends like half their time on it 😂.

Also, how much of an influence is the school you go to on your atar and study scores? I don't live in Melbourne so will this be a negative impact?

It's not so much to do with whether the school is suburban or rural, it's more the performance of the students from your school on the exam. For example, if you were in the bottom 50% of your school in the SAC and your school is the bottom 50% of the State in the exam, your SAC would be moderated to bottom quartile. It's the only fair way to do it.

@@MathsWithMrLim Yeah, I guess there's not really any other way. Thanks

Het, thanks for the video but the quiz isn't really up to date. My school is new so it is not available as one of the options and I tried another nearby school but it wasn't available either maybe because it changed its name about 10 years ago? Also, studio arts doesn't exist anymore it's now called Art - Making and Exhibiting and I noticed there was quite a few subjects missing like all the languages. Still a useful tool though for some subjects, so thanks for that. Also thanks for your explanations.

Thanks, I made some more updates and added a bunch of other subjects.
School estimates are hard, especially for new schools and small schools. I used VCAA data from 2023 for the school list, so if your school is brand new this year then it won't be there yet.

@@MathsWithMrLim Okay, cool. Yeah, my school only opened in 2020 with my year being the first so we won't have any results until the end of this year then.
