Thanks for watching. The EOS R is still an amazing camera today. It's incredible how this camera has held up over the years. i bought the eos r after your eos r 2024 video it really helped pull the trigger on it and 4 months later no regrets and enjoying it, even got to do paid gigs with it
That's amazing thank you for sharing that story. Really means a lot to me that these videos are helping people and you're having a positive experience with the EOS R. Appreciate the comment. :)
Thanks, Thanks. I just got my camera three days ago, and this video has boosted my confidence to fully go into photography. I only need to get the lenses you have mentioned. Thanks again. You just got a new follower.
Oh thank you so much for the comment and the sub. I really appreciate it. You're going to love shooting with the R it still is an amazing camera. I'm sure you're going to have a lot of fun shooting with it. See you in the comments again sometime.
I've been following you for about two years and I watch just about all your EOS R videos. I'm looking to get a second body since my Fuji XT3 is starting to fail. I keep wanting to get back to Canon and the EOS R is so tempting. Every video you make pushes me towards it more and more lol. Thanks for making this hard for me haha! Appreciate you and your channel!
It will be a nice upgrade in image quality if that's what you're looking for. I have some experience with Fuji cameras and they produce a really unique look with their X-trans sensors. It's a slightly gritty raw film look that is really cool. The EOS R by contrast produces a very smooth crisp image especially in lower light. Both systems create beautiful photos it's just that there is a different style to the type of photos they create. In the end it all comes down to having fun with a camera in your hand and creating something you are passionate about. Thank you for the comment and thanks for watching my videos. Really appreciate it.
The R is a chronically underrated little tank of a camera, I can't believe its so far under the radar - I will die on this hill! I've had an EOS R as my main body for nearly 2 years and I love it. Aside from maybe IBIS and more up to date AF it does everything I need and punches far above its weight!
100% agree. It got a lot of bad press buy moron UA-cam reviewers and it never recovered despite the fact that the EOS R as you said is a tank of a camera. It does everything you want a camera to do and does it well. Thanks for the comment.
I bought the EOS R last year. Worked just fine for well, everything. I reached over 10000 images with it some weeks ago. One by one. I got fun images with astrophotograhy, beautiful landscapes with the milkyway using a cheap 16 prime and a tripod. Ergonomics are beautiful and it gives quality images and everything. Its ISO handling is pretty decent, although there are probably new improvements in the more expensive cameras. Yes video is not the best because of the cropping, but its not totally bad and I’ve gotten some decent video with it, but thats arguebly more of a question about good lighting than camera specs! Honestly though, it does only have one glaring issue. A big one. It has no Image stabilization. I can live with the one slot card as a hobbyist who backs up regularly. If you do have a good lens with IS however, then youre basically set. I’ve been taking images with it at ISO 2000-ish with the lens IS turned on at midnight, handheld. I took some today as well. With a tripod, you would also be set for doing astro. The only reasonable jump I could think of would be the R5. IS is very, very useful for still-image, handheld photography. Handheld with rf 50 1.8 is not the best because youre limited to about doing 1/80 of a sec, whereas on say, a 70-200 this could easily be a 1/10 with f/4, giving way better results as ISO dont need to be high. I can say this because I own both lenses. If I had to recommend, I would say, get this eos R camera and a lens (maybe the 28-70 f2.8?) that has IS. Edit: Having a budget for a high quality lens is way more important imo! Have fun!
Thanks for support the eosR i have use it for 4 years and use it for stream work every week so nice and sharp and for landscape, macro and hobby photos its always fine no issues, super camera! And what you say not for birds and so. I have for that since a year the R7 also a beast 💪
Thank you really appreciate it and I'm glad the video was useful for you. That touch bar hack makes makes a huge difference in the camera's usability. :)
@@vaskoobscura_ I also wholly agree with the idea of switching off all the other autofocus modes apart from eye tracking and single point. I don't know who the other modes are for to be quite honest. If I am photographing a bird, a person, a zebra, a dog, yeah, focus on the eye please. I found with the R6 there always seemed to be too much pre-planning in the way of shooting.
Mann i was looking forward to buying canon R by the end of this year and i can't tell how this is by far the best honest video i have seen about Canon R. i'm really inspired and it's like a go ahead and get it for me. everything important was said... i appreciate your work bro
Just picked up the R8 for $1,069 on a Black Friday deal to backup my R. Excited to see how the AF is better, but still intending to use R as primary. Great vid, solid rationale for audience to consider.
Thank you so much for the comment. Really appreciate it. Have fun with the R8. Pop back in when you have the time and let me know what you think of the difference in AF between the cameras.
I have been studying reviews of this camera and felt it's definitely a major upgrade from my 7D dslr. I loved your analysis of this camera and I think it's perfect for my style of work. You went straight forward about the practicality of this model, not the shiny bells and whistles. Only thing is truly bothering me is about the green tint in this camera! There are not much detail information about it and I don't like the way people fix it with white/grey card. I always shoot kelvin. But no one can tell me if this green tint present in Kelvin temp. Or there is no information about adjusting tint-shift in camera. My rebel xti could tint shift even tho never used it.
Thanks for the comment. The green shift is very slight. I find the only time i notice it is when I'm shooting subject with a green background. Something like trees. It seems to accentuate the green tint. But in normal use I never notice any kind of green shift. It must have something to do with the camera's auto white balance. If you are manually dialling it in you might not see any green shift. There is also a way to shift the color tone in the settings.
The camera was made with genuine passion, which is something hard to objectively describe, but those who know, know. Great image quality, good ergonomics, still decent AF, exceptional build. Well, why not?
Totally agree. There is something really special about this camera and it's hard to put into words. Only those who use it really know that EOS R feeling you get when you shoot with it.
The old 5Dmk4 was my dream camera but I never bought one. I have the OG 5D Classic, sold my 5Ds and bought a Sony a7R3. I'm thinking to get the EOS R for pictures only as I have my EF glass that I use with my 5D Classic and will always keep it. The EOS R is a hell of a camera for sure. Just a correction about what you said at 10:36 - EOS R is not the second highest resolution camera from Canon. It is the third. Second is the EOS M6 Mark II with a 32.5MP CMOS APS-C sensor. If you count the DSLRs, it is the the forth as the 5Ds/5DsR have 51MP being the highest resolution cameras from Canon. The three (EOS R, M6 Mark II and 5Ds) are discontinued so it is correct to count them all
Glad you made the comparison to at least the 5D IV. I would have added that model for someone to take a look at. Between the two the 5D IV is pro level
Scored a new EOS R just before they were discontinued and loving it to this day, even after getting an R5. Like you, take it with me on vacation and frequently for family days out. So interesting that Canon has yet to design a camera that makes people feel like they absolutely must replace their Rs.
You totally understand what I was saying when I said there is something special about the R. It's hard to put into words but you just feel it when you use the camera. Appreciate the comment.
Build quality is great. IQ is great the LCD display on the top is like the R5. The shutter can be noisy and it's only got one slot. I Dual shoot weddings with an R6MK2 which is better for controls and general shooting plus has the dual card slots. The R is still a very very capable camera though.
I loved my R when I had it, loved the pictures coming out of it. The only reason I had to trade it was because of the video. I'm a hybrid wedding photographer and needed something that can do both really really well, and needed to match my R6 II, so I traded it for an R8. I still think about my R to this day.
You made the right choice. The R8 is the better choice for your wedding work. With the EOS R5 dropping in price that might also be an option for you too.
@vaskoobscura_ I've actually thought about it, but the problem I'm facing is the autofocus system in the R5 at the moment. I also have the R6 and I know they have the same autofocus. I have the R6 II and I've gotten used to that. The R6 feels slow in comparison, even though it's a really good system What is your take on it?
I've been using the Canon R for about a year, and I'm still as satisfied as I was on the first day of purchase. I only miss the wheel and the double sd card. That's all In a few years it will probably be a Canon r5
Thanks for the comment. The R5 keeps dropping in price only a matter of time before you upgrade. But the R is a fantastic camera. It's amazing how well it's been holding up.
Oh well, I bought my EOS R back when it just had hit the stores over here in Europe back in 2018. Coming from the EOS-1 analogue and digital series, I was very disappointed how different the user interface was and also the feeling of the R in particular with the heavy long telephotos etc, was just bad for me. It felt like a toy. I kind of hated it. On the other hand, I loved the flip-screen for my low-angle work and I loved the output (IQ). In the meantime I have step by step migrated to the R3, which is much closer to my legacy world than the R, will soon adopt the R1 and will leave my 1DXMk2's behind...but hey, the R is still in my cupboard and thanks for your video, just charging some batteries - inspired by your video, will take it out for a walk once recharged. I am curious how it will feel, since I have added more and more native RF lenses to my kit...thanks for your video, love your view and stance!
Hi, I am considering buying an R, but it's difficult to find a used one in a shop to try out. I shoot either Aperture prority with fixed ISO, or Manual with auto ISO as my C1 and C2 settings on a 6D mk1. On the 6D I use the thumb wheel on the back for shutter and the dial on the top for aperture. How would this map to the R please? Would it be sensible to purchase the EF to RF control ring adapter rather than the standard adapter to use with the R?
You could buy a control ring adapter to give you a third wheel for control if you like. With the R i set the camera to "FV" mode so that when I scroll the back wheel it changes the active setting: ISO, aperture or shutter. Then the front wheel changes the active setting i'm on. It took a little getting used to but once I got the muscle memory down it was all good.
I just got a question like this I'm going to copy and paste the answer here: I don't shoot much astrophotography so I would recommend asking someone who shoots that kind of content. That being said I don't see why the EOS R would not be good at shooting the northern lights. I would get the EOS R and spend the money I saved on a good lens with a big aperture to get the best shots in low light. Hope that helps. :)
I love my EOS-R, such a great camera. Shame Canon aren't updating the firmware and letting it have some of the newer focusing features but I get why they want you to buy the newer cameras. I pair it with the 24-240mm lens and it's great and lightweight for walking in the hills. I'd love a 70-200mm, for the superior quality, but the bulk and weight of 2 lenses to cover the 24-240mm isn't worth it.
Thanks for the comment appreciated. There is a company called Magic Lantern that makes firmware that open up all the features a camera has to offer. I wonder if in the future they might create a firmware for the EOS R? Would be interesting to see what features could be unlocked.
@@vaskoobscura_ thanks for that, I've just checked them out. Be interesting if they can do something just to bring the camera a step closer to it's younger brothers.
Technically, the Canon 5Ds R has 50.6 mp sensor. So, the best of Canon camera for MP is the 5Ds R. I am still waiting for Canon to build a new one. Value for money would be a toss up between the 5Ds R and the R at $850. If you shot stills you may want the 5Ds R over the R due to the MP and it’s the sharpest Canon camera to date. The R is the best overall hybrid if you shoot video/photo. You can do a comparison between the two of these camera. That would be interesting!
You're right the 5Ds R is 50mp and it doesn't have the AA filter which makes it really sharp. I know somebody who has a 5Ds R. I wonder if I could borrow it for a video. I hear that Canon is working on an R5s R kind of camera. Something with a really high megapixel count. Could be something interesting to look forward to.
Hi! I just watched your video on the eos r canon camera. I am looking for something to photograph the northern lights, and for astrophotography. I am an absolute beginner teaching myself about iso, f, etc. would this be a good camera for me to buy? Ive been looking at the eos r5 mark ll but honestly don’t want to spend that $$ as a beginner. I have pushed my iPhone 15 pro as far as it’ll go at a 10 sec exposure. My pics are great but I know they can be better. I respect your opinion and would love to know your thoughts.

The only Canon EOS cameras that can record All-I codecs are the R3, R5, R5 II and the R.
Thanks for the comment. And the R is the only one sub $1000 in price.
I'm already looking forward to the Canon R in 2037 video 😂
hahahahahahaha. I should film it now and schedule it.
I got mine last week. I paid $600. Barely used.
WOW that's awesome. $600 for the EOS R is an awesome deal.
I am sorry if I sound worse - As soon as some says "I don't know, there is something about it" then you immediately know that the content creator is throwing these videos where they create anchoring 'hey I have higher end or newer cameras, but I am using this old cameras (only for a walk out on street, not professional) which I don't know why".
Thank you for the comment.
@@vaskoobscura_ Thank you for reading it.
Is it cropped in full HD recording?
no. it's only cropped in 4k and 120p slow motion.
@vaskoobscura_ My friend wants to sell Eos R for 600 Euro (about $650) in perfect condition...So I want to take it
