After watching the video which camera is the right one for you? I have more sample photos on the blog post vaskoobscura.com/blog/2023/1/24/canon-eos-r-vs-eos-r7-which-camera-is-right-for-you
Working at a university, travelling to remote locations for ethnographic filming and photography. I keep thinking the canon R would be better for low light conditions as its not always easy to film and photograph in these locations with flashes and other portable lighting solutions. I must admit its such a toss up that even after watching your vid Im still torn between the two
I’m currently visiting NYC for work. I bought the R7 + the 24-105 F4. Best decision I made. Great low light, great dynamic range, fast, great video performance, and great photo quality, all while being light and compact. I love using it for street photography, interviews, b-roll content and so on. If anyone is on the fence, get the R7.
Thank you for leaving any screens with writing on them long enough for normal humans to actually read! So many UA-camrs flash writing on the screen and by the time I have focused it's gone! Much appreciated.
@jcftravassos what’s your experience of using the r7 for gigs? That’s my main work (and headshots) I have a 5D mkii currently but on the dpreview comparison tool the r7 doesn’t look that much better in RAW. Was literally about to buy it until I saw that. Also, what lens are you using with it because I fear the crop factor on my nifty fifty might be too great but the kit lens is only f3.5
I would suggest an R8 over the R7. The full frame sensor is better in low light. The EOS R is also a very capable camera if you're not shooting in the dark. It has trouble focusing on the dark.
Really nice video comparison. I have the R and keep thinking I might need to upgrade but you reinforced there is just no need. I have not had any shortcomings at all. Non professional who loves landscape and nature photography. The Canon R is a great camera. I would rather put my funds into a great new lens. So I just bought the 70-200 2.8. That will only improve the R for years to come. Thanks for the review!
Glad it was helpful! For people who are only interested in Photography the R is pretty much all you need and a platform that is still hard to beat. Investing in glass was a smart move. Welcome to the channel. Appreciate the comment.
Vasko I am not ever going to pick up either of these. Overkill for my purposes. I come here to appreciate the awesome quality of video, presentation and editing you have. Do you have a blue light coming from the bottom for the talking head? If so, do you grade or apply a lut later?
Hi hope you are doing great. Happy new year. I have a blue led light positioned to the right of the camera and below the height of the lens. I turn the power of the blue light down so it only fills in the shadows but doesn't affect the light areas of my face.
Thanks for the great comparison. It confirms my choice. 😊After four years I'm still happy with the EOS R, which i use for portrait and real estate shootings. Here the FF sensor has advantages regarding depth of field and ultra wide angle shots. Few months ago I bought the R7 and it's a perfect addition for shooting fast moving objects, animals and sports and I can use the much lighter tele lenses.
5:25 That's a issue of R7 sensor. It's to dense and most lenses aren't sharp on it, especially comparing to FF. You have to use top tier lenses to get any sharp images from R7. If you use older lenses from EF system result are pretty crappy
Thats my issue right now I figured I could use the cheap lenses and it be fine but that isn't the case. O rentes the 28-70 f2 and 50 1.2 and wow the images are insane.
@@HeroShotzphoto yes, with new RF L lenses R7 is a beast. But they are very costly :/ BTW - cheaper lenses work greatly with R6 - it's only 20 mpx so it isn't so demanding from optics
Thank you so much for this comparison video! I was torn between the two, but right now my local camera shop has the EOS R on sale for like $900 and I’m thinking I really can’t go wrong with that. Right now I’m shooting with the 80D & it’s starting to crap out on me especially the tethering to my Mac and I am a product photographer so the video capability isn’t a big deal with me.
I HAVE R7 AND IN BRIGHT CONDITION WITH RF 50MM F1.8 LENS THE RESULTS ARE AMAZING ACCOMPANIED WITH LIGHTING. I SHOOT OUTDOOR PORTRAITS FOR COMMERCIAL .THIS IS MY FIRST CAMERA .
Amazing I'm glad you're getting beautiful results with your camera. That 50mm is perfect for portraits on an APS-C as it becomes an 80mm with the crop. Appreciate the comment. Welcome to the channel.
I think the best compromise is to get both if you're into all types of photography. For wild life, with a 600mm lens and on 4k crop mode, the R7 gives you an equivalent focal length of 1740mm due to the 1.6 times crop factor on the R7 and 1.81 times crop factor of the video mode on top of that. In good light it's an incredible reach for such a low budget. And there's no better crop sensor mirrorless camera from Canon anyway. Then in low light conditions, of course a full frame body will shine and for that reason I'd pick up a cheap used mirrorless or even a DSLR because the autofocus isn't as important for low light photography because you're not tracking animals etc and I find shooting sports with a cheap dslr easier than shooting birds on a mirrorless despite the mirrorless has a miles better autofocus. But if you want all of these extreme features at once, Fujifilm offers 102 megapixel mirrorless full frame bodies of which you can crop heavily and still get an incredible reach and higher detail than the R7's 32.5mp sensor as that sensor has a pixel density of approx 86megapixels full frame equivalent therefore with a 102mp full frame image, you can easily crop it and get even slightly further reach at the same pixel count. But it'll cost 4-5 times more than the R7 so getting a cheap used full frame as a backup in your backpack alongside with the R7, and having to deal with swapping cameras or having to carry an extra camera will be the best budget friendly compromise you can make.
Nice review! I’m still indecisive though… looking for a backup camera for my R6 (I’m mainly focusing on travel - that could be anything: landscapes, details, animals, portraits - and portraits and don’t want to find myself in the desert when my 1 camera breaks down). Looking into both these options as I can’t spend as much as I did on my main one… any thoughts on a good back up solution? The R for the moment has a promotion over here so it’s about 300€ cheaper than the R7, so for a backup body, that might be worth taking into consideration. Just a bit sad it has no animal eye detection as I would should animals on travels too… so that’s why I’m still in doubt…
Thanks for the comparison video. I have the EOS R and sometimes question it's ability, not mine of course, and after hearing you talk so highly about the R, it makes me realise it is me that's the weak link haha. I like the 24-105 L lens, think that's my next upgrade.
I've been in your shoes before. It's always easy to imagine that the grass is greener on the other side of the fence. The R is a fantastic tool for photography. I'm going to start doing some photography tutorials on the channel. What would you like to get better at?
@@vaskoobscura_ thanks for the confidence in the camera. I do a lot of landscape shots and I'm starting to try focus stacking and exposure bracketing. Shooting with an RF 24-240 I'm finding the limiting f-stops in poorer light conditions is raising my ISO. Some tutorials on these would be ideal.
Focus stacking and exposure bracketing those could be fun videos. A faster lens would definitely help with light. Because you're shooting landscapes you can try one of the third-party manual focus lenses. They can be had at a really good price compared to the fast Canon glass.
Excellent practical video. It’s not about the specs but mostly the application. As a reviewer, you get that . I have had the R for 3 years now. I have not maxed it limitation’s. I do weddings and events and other than the one card slot and no backup it’s is pretty good. I traded my old workhorse the 90D for a R7. Shocking my 90D photo look a little sharper. Thank you. Appreciate the comment. I've been a photographer for 19 years so I try to look at camera features from a practical perspective. Welcome to the channel.
I was using a lot the RP. As much people hated on it even in reviews, mostly they missed the point of the RP... a more affordable full frame camera and SMALL/LIGHT, sure it was crippled and in some ways even unnecessary, but i LOVED IT. Sadly my habits changed a lot from stills/family/travel/landscape/astro stuff to wildlife/video centric so i even began to "hate" the RP over time. The R7 saved me a lot of hassle since i thought already about switching to a MFT system for wildlife dedicated only.
I'm still hesitating, as I do some sports photography, but I'd still like to have the detail of the eos r and the autofocus of the r7. Which one do you think is better to do both?
You could consider the R6. It's better than the R decent for sports at 20 frames per second and you can probably find one used at a good price now that the R6mkII is out.
great comparison video, was just what I was looking for as both cameras are tempting at the moment. I've currently got a 70D so looking for an upgrade but unsure which way to go. Your video has given me some food for thought! Maybe if I can get a bargain EOS R it might be more tempting....Looking forward to seeing more R7/R content. Keep up the good work
Glad it was helpful! Thank you for taking the time to write a comment. Appreciated. I've heard of people finding good deals on refurbished EOS R cameras from the Canon webpage. Might be worth checking out. More R7/R content on deck.
I talk about it in this video where I go over the EOS R as a wedding photography camera. ua-cam.com/video/kw7xpwxT9MU/v-deo.html Basically you want to switch out your memory cards so you always have a backup of your shots.
I shoot with an EOS-R for the past 3 years and the 90D for almost as long. I am considering getting the R7 to take the place of the 90D for its focusing capabilities. I do like having both APSC and FF cameras. They are tools used for different things. A zoom lens that I use on both cameras is the 100-400IIL which is a 160-640 FOV on my 90D (or R7) and a 100-400 on the R. I use a Tamron 17-50/2.8 on the 90D and a Canon EF 24-70/4L-IS on the R giving similar capabilities. They do share the Tamron 35-150/2.8-4-VC yielding a 56-240 FOV on the 90D. My 28/1.8 and 50/1.4 and 85/1.8 are used on both cameras as well. So...Get the R and the R7.
The EOS R shoots a really high quality 1080p video. It has the All-I codec which shoots at a high bitrate. The EOS R6 and R5 are more expensive and they can shoot a good 1080p as well. I assume you're looking for a full frame senosored camera.
@@vaskoobscura_ No, I'm just looking for something that will record in 1080p 60fps. Because the camera with 4K 60fps without a crop is too expensive for my capabilities. And with the crop, I don't really know if the R10 would be ok? Or any other? Because EOS R is also rather too expensive for me. I was thinking about Fuji X-s10 but many people complain about continuous autofocus during filming.
Thanks Vasko, eventually found a great comparison review between these two cameras. I previously had the Canon R and now thinking to get the R7. But after your video I am a bit indecisive about which one to buy 😂 Thanks for a well detailed review, I think you did a great job explaining the advantages and disadvantages of both these cameras very well. I do like the Full Frame but I also like faster fps and the new processor😂
I sold my beloved R for a R7 because of 4k60, better 4k, no record limit, better AF, digital hotshoe, 10 bit clog3, and zone eye AF. I miss the grip and feel of my R, wider full frame view and customized video record button in photo. They both get noisy at iso 6400.
Canon R This camera is really great even in 2023, it gives excellent results in photos and videos, but I really hope they announce the Canon R Mark ii , I'll wait for it because if they do, it will certainly be my next camera after the wonderful experience with the Canon R.
@@vaskoobscura_ and following your advices regarding the retro FD lenses I grabbed one around the beginning of January the 28mm f2.8 - I can only say that I am amazed by the quality of the image ;) so thank you
Hi thanks for the question. I would say the R7 is good for animals, cars and sports. If you're shooting things that move fast the R7 and the R3 are the two cameras Canon makes for shooting fast action. If you plan on shooting concerts in dark environments with the R7 it's important to keep in mind that the APS-C sensor get noisy fast in low light so it would be smart to invest in a fast lens. f1.2, f1.4, f1.8 something in that range.
@@vaskoobscura_Still, up to about ISO 5,000 the R7 images clean up really nice. Beyond that, not so much. But my god!!! Even a few years ago usable images at 5,000 was unheard of!
I see, you watch Duade Paton, you are a man of culture :) But i dont get how you run out of battery with the R7 in video... the "about 1 hour" is nonsense. Probably in recorded footage but with like another 2-3 hours on time without recording used. My R7 did in ALL movie modes at least 1,5 hours and the limit at for example 4k60 was overheating after about 1,5 hours with 30-40% battery left. In the end... The R7 easily shoots with a full E6NH battery 1,5-3 hours straight.
I just tested it I got just under 1.5 hours on a full battery in 4k60. I was probably using one of the older batteries when I fist tested it. That's probably why I ran out of battery sooner. The new ones apparently hold more charge. Duade Paton is awesome. I'm really enjoying his videos. Thanks for the comment.
@@vaskoobscura_ I am normally charging up the (E6NH…) battery every week once and i have also 2 spare E6N batteries i barely need at all, mostly charged to 60% at least. the big canon batteries are at least somewhat capable of using them for multiple days and even go out with 50% charge, unlike the RP i had before. As i had the EOS RP, if possible i always had already a full battery to work with in the camera, additionally a mostly full spare battery i even needed often (at a single day outside!) The small LP-E17 battery was absolutely annoying and bad
@@vaskoobscura_ I did recently also a time lapse (to try it for the first time), and since the display turns off during the automated All-I 4k capture and no mechanical shutter is used (electronic only) within 1,5 hour timelapse i havent even lost 20% battery (at 0° Celsius!), so i guess in timelapse mode even straight 5+ hours timelapse are possible
Thanks for this info. Updated my R7 to 1.3.0 and had problems with poor autofocus with my Sigma 150-600C, had been fine with 1.1.0. Rolled back as per your procedure will see if AF is back to normal.
You're right. But on the positive side the 1080p AII-I is really really high quality. I shot a lot of 1080p videos with the R and upscaled it to 4k for UA-cam and nobody could tell the difference.
2:40 I cannot agree for R7. It's plasticky and cheaply build. No match for it's precedessor 7d mark II. And yes touchbar instead joystick is stupid, in R7 that joystick is too high, circle in DSLRs and joystick were better
I had a couple of 7dii's. I dropped one and it shattered like a cheap toy! I currently have an R7 and it totally runs circles around the Mark ii in every way. The fact that it is lighter is a tremendous asset for hiking and carrying it all day, especially as I get older! Those who complain that it's not a "true successor" because it's not "beefy enough" miss the whole point! The autofocus totally blows away the clunky old system in the Mark ii, so much faster and more accurate. The detail in the 32 mpx. images (the equivalent of about 80 mpx. in a full frame camera) are incredible! Croppability is amazing! The button layout takes about ten minutes to get used to. Now I actually prefer it to my full frame Canon cameras layout. It is faster and more intuitive. As for the plastic (which just makes the camera lighter...much like the 100-500 RF lens incorporates plastic to make it lighter than the old EF 100-400), just don't drop it. Lighter really is better!
@@alansach8437 7d2 shattered like a cheap toy? So try to do it with R7 ;) You could also mentioned mechanical shutter shock below 1/100s and stupid rolling shutter on electronic mode. Also my copy of R7 in mechanical shutter just jamms randomly on the burst mode. They screwed up even intervalometer... If you set for example 10s photos with 2s interval it will stop after few minutes because buffer will be full. Ofc new AF is good, and sensor too but there are many flaws in this camera, mostly because it was made in hurry without even testing camera...
hahahaha. Too late. It was a tough read though that Jordan likes to talk. Makes everything overly complicated. Everyone can live their life in a way that's best for them. If we all did it the same it would be a boring world right. Thanks for the comment.

But after your video I am a bit indecisive about which one to buy 😂 Thanks for a well detailed review, I think you did a great job explaining the advantages and disadvantages of both these cameras very well. I do like the Full Frame but I also like faster fps and the new processor😂
Get both.
The R7 is definitely has the more advanced video features. Thanks for the comment.
Canon R This camera is really great even in 2023, it gives excellent results in photos and videos, but I really hope they announce the Canon R Mark ii , I'll wait for it because if they do, it will certainly be my next camera after the wonderful experience with the Canon R.
They announced the EOS R8 but that looks to be a replacement for the EOS RP. Looks like the R6 is the replacement for the R.
Please make a video for canon 90d in 2022 for videography or photography 🙏
Thanks for the comment. Unfortunately I don't own that camera or know anybody who does. If I find one I can make a video about it.
Hey mate i currently own 90D in short not worth it go for r7 with 18-150.
Great video, and I can tell you that I am more than happy to purchase the EOS R great purchase with amazing capabilities :)
Thanks for the comment. Appreciate it. It's an amazing camera.
@@vaskoobscura_ and following your advices regarding the retro FD lenses I grabbed one around the beginning of January the 28mm f2.8 - I can only say that I am amazed by the quality of the image ;) so thank you
Thanks bro
Welcome
Is the R7 just for animal & cars ?? Not sports or concerts??
I see, you watch Duade Paton, you are a man of culture :)
But i dont get how you run out of battery with the R7 in video... the "about 1 hour" is nonsense.
As i had the EOS RP, if possible i always had already a full battery to work with in the camera, additionally a mostly full spare battery i even needed often (at a single day outside!)
The small LP-E17 battery was absolutely annoying and bad
@@vaskoobscura_ I did recently also a time lapse (to try it for the first time), and since the display turns off during the automated All-I 4k capture and no mechanical shutter is used (electronic only) within 1,5 hour timelapse i havent even lost 20% battery (at 0° Celsius!), so i guess in timelapse mode even straight 5+ hours timelapse are possible
thxxx for thissss
You're welcome I'm glad it was useful for you.
Thanks for this info. Updated my R7 to 1.3.0 and had problems with poor autofocus with my Sigma 150-600C, had been fine with 1.1.0. Rolled back as per your procedure will see if AF is back to normal.
Hopefully that worked out for you.
@@vaskoobscura_ will be testing in a couple of days. Hopefully back to way it was before. I'll post my thoughts afterwards.
thank you
You're welcome
The eos r has almost a 1.8 crop in 4k
You're right. But on the positive side the 1080p AII-I is really really high quality. I shot a lot of 1080p videos with the R and upscaled it to 4k for UA-cam and nobody could tell the difference.
@@vaskoobscura_ use to have the eos r I used a ninja v and a metabones speed booster for it and it really was a beast
1 SD card slot...😢
I know right. I agree with you should have had two.
Love bloodsport 😂
YES! Awesome movie. You're the first person to mention it. Thanks for the comment.
@Vaskoobscura I read that, “12 Rules for Life” and realized I’m living wrong. I want a life do-over..😂 Don’t read it. Lol..
hahahaha. Too late. It was a tough read though that Jordan likes to talk. Makes everything overly complicated. Everyone can live their life in a way that's best for them. If we all did it the same it would be a boring world right. Thanks for the comment.
focus on jordan.......he likes that ...otherwise he'll cry
lol OK.
