I'm a swimmer but hit the gym weekly and I gotta say I have all the respect for every competitor in this event.. I mean 10 rounds of 50m swim + 3x muscle ups is a pretty tough workout. This event is definitely not preferred for those who don't swim regularly and just completing it is an achievement. Good job to all who pushed thru and congrats to Troyan.
Yeah my time on a paced 500 free like this is like 5:30, I don't know how long it would take me with the muscle ups but I think this would be slight work for someone who swims a lot
Haha spot on... there is always a guy on youtube thinking he s gonna make the whole thing right by saying “im a runner” or “im a swimmer” and “that was great”. Then you look at their profile and well... you know what i mean.
You have an odd sense of humor if you think swimming has comedic value. Swimming is nothing more than avoiding drowning, and they did that fine. I find comedic value in someone calling swimming "the funniest shit"
Let me get this straight.... someone correct me if I’m wrong. But the guy who won who did it in 10:15... did 500m swim and 30 muscle ups in that amount of time?.... that’s insane.
He was taking his time in the water too. He could've probably done this faster. Generally speaking, competitive swimmers do 50m under 25 seconds so that would be little over 4 min for 500m. He was going about 30-40 seconds per lap.
They are tested. They can be tested any time of year and after completion. If they test positive there is a clause that they have to pay back any money won
If you say anything about their swim stroke people will hate on you but fr with so much money on the line you would really think some of them would strighten up their form
Big crossfit guy here... this event is is hell and major props to everyone who did this (it would wreck me), but I will say the chicken wing muscle-ups should’ve been no-reps.
Crazy cool, badass sport! They could need some custom-fitted goggles to feel even more comfortable in the water and have full focus on the race and win l! :) (Christina, THEMAGI5)
+AceandScotch2 So they're meant to be all-around athletes, they practice form in all the other exercises, but then obviously totally neglect swimming? Sorry, but I think he understood the point of CrossFit just fine.
+Michael DiLullo Reposting from above... For those saying that 'elite' athletes should be better at swimming, possibly, but for 1 out of 12 events, when it's not their sport, they handled it pretty well. Of course most of these guys aren't good swimmers; they have to be able to perform a whole bunch of different events over the next four days. Sure, someone with a swimming background would probably win this event (assuming they could do the muscle-ups), but would they be able to do the rest of this stuff packed into a few days, to the intensity these guys do? Not likely. This tends to happen on every CrossFit Games video involving a highly specialized sport/skill...invariably, someone who specializes in the particular sport/skill being tested in that one event comments on how pathetic the performances are in (Skill X) for supposedly elite athletes. The amount of different skills these guys have to take on is astounding - of course they're not going to master them all. Fine, a competitive swimmer could probably own this event...and then would probably be eliminated from the games a couple days later on the clean-and-jerk ladder (relevant: event 8 of the 2013 games was a clean-and-jerk ladder with the lightest allowable starting weight of 225 pounds, and if you could not complete the first weight, you were out of the games). Watch the likes of dressel. American record holder goes almost 15m underwater on both the start and turn. Underwater swimming is way faster than surface swimming (if done well).
I love the reckless abandon of how Jordan dives in the water. Everyone else lines up all nice first, and he just spins like, "Screw it, I'll sort it out in the air". Like a dolphin eager to get back underwater.
ua-cam.com/video/zbh0qhGmJ9U/v-deo.html John Romano explains this pretty nicely. I agree some of them may be clean, or may be clean when they complete. But only some. Also CrossFit drug testing protocol is so lax.

This video is why I ultimately joined crossfit. Amazing athletes!
you can do most of their workouts without paying 150 a month to a cult
Freaks of nature! I used to hate on crossfit but this stuff is no joke! Awesome!

Watching them swim is the funniest shit I have ever seen
+John Lee Is that bad form?? Or do you mean them being so slow in funny? I don't do swimming so I can't really see them being bad at swimming.
+John Lee absolutely, troyan was going to win for sure, but everyone elses form was like mine when I first learnt to swim
John Lee I swim competitively and it is just sad watching them
I'm sure that if you were competing with those guys in this event it would be even more sad to see you.
