Amateur question: In blockmolding - Do the beads expand in the "oven", giving EPS this voronoi cell look or are they pressed into the confined space and heated to adhere the polymers together (as in FDM manufacturing for example)? Thank you for the video, I love seeing how the things we take for granted around us are made :) Greetings from Germany
Hi Benedikt, great question and greetings from Canada! It's a little bit of both. The block mold is flooded with pre-expanded EPS or GPS beads and then steam is injected into the mold cavity. The heat energy from the steam forces the bead to expand for a final time and take the shape of the mold. The beads expand in the limited space available and begin to fuse into each other on a microscopic level. That fusion is what holds them together and gives that voronoi cell look that you're seeing. Thanks for watching our video! --Jay from AMC Foam
We see or use this material almost every day. But I never had a clue how it is created. Thanks for the video!

Very useful info! Cool to see it in action.
